Camera angle and color saturation
Being familiar with the size of a real Mustang probably adds to the confusion. For me, I've seen real ones a bunch of times at airshows and museums, never seen an SW-51 in person.
same reason everyone's airport instagram photos are atrocious, a veritable bukkake of post effects
Bukkake, nice
Nice
Nice
I know what you're trying to say, but...
Hey man. We're friends elsewhere.
Thanks for re-writing your comment :)
You can check the photographers instagram or website to see more details about the rig he's using (see details elsewhere in this thread), which probably has a big impact on the quality of the video. Looks to me like the lens is probably what gives it that video game look.
I did read in his comments on this post on his instagram that the drone itself is really suped up, not your average DJII or whatever. Hard for me to tell how fast it's going, can anyone?
Well the landing speed of a P-51 is around 110MPH, so probably a bit faster than that.
This is a scaled replica with a significantly smaller engine, so it’s likely the landing speed is slower than the original’s.
Top speed in the SW-51 is 190 KIAS
It’s probably less than suped up and is just a custom FPV drone with a GoPro attached to it
So how did it go with the drone. Did you get special permission to fly on the airport? Did you have to find some unlock code from vendor? What where the terms you needed to have?
12/19/2020 certification date on the sUAS pilot and it looks like they use a Visual Observer because of the FPV headset the pilot wears. No FAA waivers found for FPV Filmz LLC. They are under the Fayetteville Class C shelf that exists between 2,500'-5,300' and under 400' so the airspace is fine.
Well if they are on the full up and up then the person piloting in FPV wouldn’t be the RPIC but the observer with the ability to take control as needed. Because an observer does not replace VLOS for the RPIC other than temporary operational needs at discretion of the RPIC such as doing obliques around a building where the building obstructs views momentarily.
I don't know what the setup is but if its a manually flown quad then no need for unlocking
Can I inform what the music is?
The propwash off a true Merlin engine would obliterate that drone on takeoff so it's probably just a replica or experimental aircraft. Either way it's a really cool shot!
I think it’s 60 FPS, which makes it appear smoother (is that what you mean?)
[deleted]
Maybe what they mean is how it’s stabilized? I looked up the maker TMotor Hobby and they do some cool custom rigs. I would bet though this was shot with stabilization, with a bigger sensor and at a higher frame rate(4K@60fps) and rendered smaller for the super clean and smooth shot
Contrast and Saturation, the Camera angle is unique like a sim, and it’s 60 FPS
Another reason people aren't mentioning: it cuts a lot. Those are 4 different fly-bys
They look like real rivets but in fact are not. The plane was build in sheet metal once to produce the molds. What you see is a carbon fiber plane with 100,000 fake texture details. It’s really hard to see from a distance but well done.

I didn't realize it was real until reading the comments lol. Pretty sweet camera work
Any chance anyone has the airport code? Would love to get this going in MSFS đź‘€
5M5 - Crystal Lake Airport
Decatur, Arkansas, USA
Also if that’s actual footage, just saw some at the same airport, for the SW-51. 70% scale replica 2-seat Mustang. Complete Carbon fiber body. Scale Wings SW-51 starting near $300k
Didn’t read far enough. You got it!
Why do people opt for slightly smaller sizes instead of building the full-scale thing?
Edit: Fuck your API changes, Reddit.
Be careful here. I landed at dusk and a deer was on the runway. I almost had Venison for dinner.
5M5 is my favorite in the state! I drive past it often on the way to my parents :)
Definitely going to be stopping by there someday for fun!
Yep. I flew into here when I got my PPL! Such a beautiful airfield to fly into!
My first thought too, thanks for sharing op
Lol, I just came for this too.
I'll meet you there.
My first thought War Thunder? Nooo looks too good. DCS or Il2? There are no civilian airports. So that's MSFS... couple seconds later glancing which reddit it is... Wait, what... what the f... :D?
It's a good thing that we have today Sims that are sometimes indistinguishable from reality :D.
The overlap between these 3 subreddits must be fun.
Man I miss IL2's Hyperlobby days.
Any good multiplayer WWII sims these days with good online communities?
Well if You like to mess up with a buttons then pricey path of DCS, otherwise much cheaper Il2 Great Battles(that's generally Il2 BoS with DLCs like maps and planes), right now for example Normandy is in development, map is expected to cover beaches of Normandy up to southern suburbs of London.
If You want there is also War Thunder I did flew a lot simulation battles, but after spending few hours in Il2 it's hard to come back.
(DCS does have a few civilian airports of this size, none that look like this though)
Here's another shot from the same 2 pilots
Vehicle is a SW-51 Mustang, a true-to-scale P-51 replica
Crystal Lake fishing details
Airplane pilot: @dozen_aldridge
Drone pilot: @nikofilmz
Lol the fishing info. Fuck it I read it.
Pop quiz. No looking.
What is the average - or maximum - depth of Crystal Lake?
!average depth of 10 feet, maximum depth of 35 feet!<
All I remember is the denizens: bass, bluegill, channel cats.
It looks dammed up like a reservoir, but I get the sense it’s on top of a natural ravine so: Avg 50 ft Max 115 ft
All I remember is the denizens: bass, bluegill, channel cats.
You forgot about Jason Voorhees though.

My guess would be cost (and performance). The real deal was designed around its enormous engine, so a lighter, smaller modern engine allows everything else to be a bit smaller. The reduced weight and drag improves performance and efficiency, as well as reducing cost further.
Edit: the SW-51 has a 140hp Rotax engine. Late war P-51s had an 1800hp V-12 Merlin. Making the aircraft smaller makes the most of the drastically smaller and lower performing engine. A full scale replica would probably be downright slow with such a small engine, and bigger engines with modern controls and support are probably hard to find. Anything that needs that much thrust goes turbine, so piston engines at that scale are probably thin on the ground.
1800hp V-12 Merlin
Jesus...
That sounds like a really weak powerplant
I would love to see someone bring the Rolls-Royce/Packard Merlin back into production, but I doubt it's feasible when the only market is Spitfire and Mustang restorations. I would also love to see a 1:1 replica of both planes enter production, but again, too small of a market
It's a large, heavy, complex engine. It's also not the most efficient. There might be a market for reproduction parts though. There's still a decent number of originals that fly and need maintenance. Saw one a week or two back, in fact.
Someone might make a limited block casting run for replicas or rebuilds on original airframes, but it overlaps too much with the turboprop market to ever be considered for actual commercial revival.
It's enough to do quite a bit with. I believe the basic Cessna has like 72hp. Planes don't need much, especially if they're well-designed aerodynamically. I think it's plenty for some aerobatics and a pretty respectable climb rate. The original was heavier, and needed a truly crazy climb rate to intercept bombers. Hence the 1800hp V-12.
God damn ww2 aviation was really the pinnacle of awesomeness.
Modern stuff is pretty amazing, too. It's less a dance where the pilot is key, and more an incredible mesh of technology that's capable of incredibly focused destruction in an amazingly short time.
Only idiots build these and throw rotaxes in them. IIRC most common engine is a turbo LS-3 @ 500-700HP
Nonsense you just need a pt6. /s
You say /s but I think there's a market for turboprop warbirds out there...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cameron_P-51G
"Stuff a turbine in it" is the aviation equivalent of "let me LS swap this tiny Japanese sports car".
The Cameron P-51G (originally Cameron Grand 51) is an American two-seat turboprop representation of the 1940s North American P-51 Mustang, designed and built by Cameron & Sons Aircraft of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho for sale as completed aircraft or kits for amateur construction.

Over the years there have been some attempts (like this). But they usually don’t seem to get very far probably due to money and/or technical issues.
This is awesome! What is the name of the song? Works very well!
I believe it's the opening to "Hier encore" by Charles Aznavour from 1964.

[removed]
It's probably custom, most serious fpv guys build their own stuff. He probably has a build list somewhere though.
I knew it was the one from that video I watched the other day! Looks amazing and kind of weird to fly. It looks so light with how it moves. Which makes sense considering it's all carbon fiber. The landing gear setup sounded very interesting and well engineered.
No way that’s original audio. Wouldn’t the drone overpower the plane’s engine noises?
Great video whats the name of the song ?
Hier Encore by Charles Aznavour
Dozen is a good dude
[deleted]
Do these things run a Merlin engine?
No way in hell would that fit in there, it's a smaller scale replica that uses a modern engine.
How much do they cost in comparison to a real one?
They cost about 300k
Did they modernise the design in any way?
It's a carbon fiber airframe.
I'm guessing being a brand new build there is a lot less to worry about in the way of fatigue and old age?
It's a carbon fiber airframe.
@dozen_aldridge insta is full of these awesome vids!
I’m more impressed by the drone flying.
This reminds me of growing up in BC. Just wandering around from airstrip to airstrip exploring and tracking rivers. That’s the closest thing to freedom I think I’ve ever experienced.
Thank you for posting this. I needed it
Took me a while to conclude it was a simulation before I read the comments and saw it was real… amazing.
This vid makes me regret not being a pilot. How incredibly beautiful and liberating it must be to fly.
Looks like a great New Year's resolution right there. I got my PPL in my late 50s.
Free flight and glider are affordable (and planet friendly) way to fly.
If you really fear that you'll sweat without a big fan, don:t under estimate the Ultra light option. Licence requirements are a bit lighter and engines need way less fuel than general aviation ones
Got $35,000 for the license and $300,000 (+tax) for that plane?
Then the gas, maintenance, and the hangar to store it in?
Flying is for the rich, always has been.
$35,000 for the license?! Only if you’re getting scammed
You can get the license for 10 and a plane for 25
I got 8.5k into it and fly for 110/hour + 50/mo. Flying isn't nearly the expensive hobby people think
Flying is for the rich, always has been.
Thanks FAA.
Hey man, while not the same, the way this video was recorded is with something called an acro race drone. Usually you strap a VR looking headset to your face while standing in a field or wherever, and you can see what your drone "sees" in real time. Feels like you're a toy pilot in a model plane.
They can flip around on any axis, and by changing the camera angle to be pretty steep (facing straight up when you set it on the ground), they fly more like a plane as opposed to a helicopter. The one I have cost less than $200 and can go 0-90mph almost instantly. There's nothing in the air that you can have such complete control over.
You're not a "real pilot" with g forces etc. , but I've never felt as close to being an augmented reality acrobatic plane racer as I have flying an acro drone. So much different than the typical ezmode mavic type drone most people think of. Only negative is crashing and the fact the lipo batteries only last maybe 5 minutes due to the power required. (You just bring like 20 and charge em beforehand)
People are really in here arguing about how real/fake this looks meanwhile my dumb ass literally thought I was looking at a picture of roast beef in a thumbnail on r/aviation.
This is so very cool OP! It’s not fake, it’s real except with some filters to make the colors pop in the video. I think this was filmed with a drone? Either way, love the video! 👍👍
That is a wonderful view
And a wonderful plane 🥹
I watched the whole thing and no price was given damnit
I think its a "if you need to ask for the price you probably cant afford it" kind of thing.
How do rich people ever get to know the price?
they see their net worth drop when they google themselves
Wow what a beautiful runway
The music, the shot, the location, the plane. Bravo. More plz.
I’m already at the point where I’m completely taking for granted the incredible shots average people can get because of drones. 10 years ago this would have been nuts.
Absolutely stunning. All the surrounding area and approach. Aircraft too. Beautiful. Loved it.
Opened reddit and this is the first thing I see. Just gonna close the app because I'm not gonna see anything better than this.
This must be one hell of a drone to be keeping up that well.
Cool looking video. Picked a good airport for this sort of fuckery. That one landing and takeoff is like 100% of the average aircraft operations for the day. Hopefully they followed the procedure for drone ops this close to an airport. Flying a drone in that airspace is a strict no-no without some sorta process you need to follow. No idea what the regulations are for formation flying with a drone. Can't say that's a by the books takeoff or approach.
I think this may be a private airport.
It's definitely a private airport. But the rules apply to all airports.
his instagram is @dozen_aldridge. Great dude. Former thunderbird 2. Amazing aviator. Go give him a follow
Those graphics are pretty good. No wake turbulence or prop wash?
Shout out to the 479 🤙🏽
Not a pilot here… bit low to the drink at the end, innit?
The pilot is a recently retired Thunderbird. Guy knows exactly what he’s doing.
That’s a high powered drone
Anyone know what the musikk is?
'Hier Encore' by Charles Aznavour
This without the sound of the mustangs engine is breaking my heart
It’s not a real mustang
Its a scale replica that has the air intake so is meant to sound like a P51, remember, the engine you only hear after passing it.
I was literally going to say "Why does this look so real?" Because it is....
Oh shit I’ve driven past this and had no idea it stuck into the lake!
Guys I know this is r/aviation not r/rap or anything but whats the song title?

Nice bot thank you very much
Great bot I love you
Great, now I’m dreading that my CFI will make us fly to Decatur one day
I'm assuming this is real? This is one of the most incredible plane shots I have ever seen. Beautiful work. :D
GTA
song name?
Damn those graphics are really nice. What game is this? Oh hold on…
Gorgeous
Is this from War Thunder?
Damn I can't tell if this is rl footage or flight simulator screen recording
What is this game? It looks amazing.
Something interesting happening in Arkansas? Impossible!
If you just stop to think "who and how is this being filmed", you realize it's a fake/sim...
Drone shot obviously
What airport is this?
5M5 3800'
This was taken off instagram
What game is this OP?
Nevermind the actual touch and go, the fact that they used a ww2 p-51 mustang is lovely. My fav airplane of all time. “Red tails” is a great movie, mostly cause its about the red tail p-51 mustang squadron during the Tuskegee experiment during ww2. In the movie this squadron of black men who want to fight for this country like every other white, mexican or whoever that also fought. But they are given hand me down warhawks (p-40’s) and are strafing areas where the enemy hasnt been seen in months. Finally, high command decides to let them go out in brand new p-51 mustangs (the best of the best that FAA has to offer) and go with air support on a beach landing. The fighter cover was so good that they ended up causing the german fighters to retreat and they chased one all the way back to his air force base. Then they damaged the airbase badly and the beach landing was majorly successful. Following they were given the task of bomber escorts and the losses of the bombers became minimal compared to the white fighter pilots. Because they did so well, they became known as the “red tails” or the most fearless, intelligent and best fighter pilot squadron in ww2
Not to rain on your parade too much, but that's a modern scale replica.
I love seeing drones and planes flying together
I honestly don't know at all if it's real or flight sim 2020. Like really. I think it's the first time this happens to me to this extent.
I am sorry but I refuse to believe this isn’t a sim
Landing +100SL Aircraft will be repaired in :30 Aircraft will be rearmed in :29 Takeoff +100SL
u/savevideo
Smooth touch and go.
Just Cause 6 beta is looking good.
u/savevideobot
That is outstanding
How do you get this footage?
Computer game
Drone
Is it legal to fly so close to the water like that?
Yes. Clear of people and structures.
Pilots will even drag their tires on the surface. I'm not claiming it is smart.
What a beauty
What drone was used to film this?
Very good Thanks👌👌👌👌👌👌
I really just wanted to hear the engine
Pretty area
Charles Aznavour - Hier encore ♥️🎶
MFS?
Its a 70% replica from Germany called "Yellow Jacket"
Is this a flight sim or real?
Seems like someone strapped a really nice camera on a really big, really fast acro racing drone. Sickk.
These guys used to fly over my house in Arkansas a few times per month. You can see the runway on approach to xna and it looks beautiful!
Scale wings sw51 mustang. It's a kit plane just like a p51 mustang
For a second I thought it was high end RC because of the drone. Well done!
I think we've reached the point where I can't tell whether it's a flight-simulator with high-end photo-realistic texture, or a real-video using a few Insta-tok like filters and HDR
Yeah the inconsistent motion blur is throwing me
Shutter speed to adjust for exposure probably causing the inconsistent blur
[deleted]
I fly a Thumb Pro (cheap 4k camera with gyro stabilization) on drones. Stabilization shouldn't add any blur at all. The way to get consistent motion blur that looks climatic is to match the shutter speed to the frame rate then compensate for light conditions with all of the other settings/filters.
[deleted]
I don't think that's really the case at all. It looks exactly like what the other person said; shutter speed was set to automatic so every time the lighting conditions changed a little bit the frame alignment changed. This gives you really bad inconsistent shifting motion blur.
If it wasn't for the tree near runway I thought it was a highly detailed R/C model
Because it’s a baby P-51, it’s bigger than a big R/C but way smaller than a WWII fighter. It weighs 1651 lbs, for example a Cessna 172 weighs 2500 pounds and a real Mustang weighs 12,000 pounds.
Ah! That explains the kinda lightweight flippy movement. I thought it was rc too.
Thunder Mustang? Sure looked like one.
I think this particular pilot flies an SW-51 which is half the weight of a Thunder Mustang, by small plane standards this is a very tiny plane!
Wow... That would be tiny.
I still think its rc lol
Nope. It’s Trevor Aldridge, a recently retired Thunderbird. Dope dude, does dope stuff. Check him out on Instagram
I dont have insta but will look on youtube, thanks
Anything is RC with a good radio and big enough servos.
Truth. “gonna find a pretty drone to take home tonight”
My mom showed me a video of MSFS the other day she thought was real :) :(
That is Dixson Aviation at Crystal lake in Decatur, Ar. Big chicken company called Peterson's used that to fly baby chicken to Tulsa, Ok to then be shipped over seas.
The pilot is a former Thunderbird.
Yeah, that is Dozen’s scale 51
Yeah-I-agree-you-make-a-good-point
Or one of the rc planes that are photorealistic.
Nah. We haven't. It's just because you are watching this on a small screen. Give it ten more years.
I'm more so wondering if it's a model airplane. Something about the proportions seem weird to me. Maybe it's just the camera is using a fisheye lens and that's causing some sort of distortion.
