Plastic is becoming more of problem then lead once was

Except our entire infrastructure is built on plastic

Our infrastructure was once built on Lead.

Sure, no where near as much as Plastics nowadays, but we managed to cut it out as much as possible. Reducing plastic use wherever possible is a very slow but sure start on cutting them out too.

It'll never be enough; greed is what brought us here and it's not going away.

Welcome to lobbying, where people just buy their laws to benefit themselves.

The funny thing is the people who own these companies or the boards that make these decisions and fund these lobbyist are also breathing in and injecting this shit. The oil companies live on the planet. Plastic producers live on the planet.

I’m reminded of a famous environmental journalist who was asked to meet with a group of very wealthy dudes in California. He was paid for the meeting. He expected to just be talking about climate change and how it’s going to effect the earth etc etc but the conversations eventually got to what these people really wanted to know— where is the best place to hide your bunker in the USA? How do I keep my guards loyal? Etc.

And it was just astonishing to him that these people were directly causing the situation in which a bunker would be necessary to make money— which will be useless by that time.

The irony was lost upon those rich dudes.

You know that environmentalist activist groups are also lobbying lawmakers to try and help the plastic epidemic

lobbying has existed since the beginning of Congress and the founding of the constitution

Almost every single good piece of legislation was started by lobbyists

Those environmentalist groups have way less money to influence politicians than the global oil corporations. Many many good pieces of legislation die early on because the corporate lobbyists simply have more power. This is why real environmental change is absurdly slow even though scientists have been yelling about it for decades, why minimum wage has stagnated, why labor laws are archaic, why the IRS just can't send us a summary of our taxes, why our Healthcare system is so absurdly expensive, you get the idea.

The obvious solution is to ban single-use plastics, and heavily tax other plastics. Innovation will make biodegradable plastic-like materials cheaper and easier to make.

Of course politicians will never do that because voters don't want to be temporarily inconvenienced for a better future.

Example, pretty sure I read about a company moving to a recyclable crisp packet, but consumers complained the rustling was too loud, so back to polluting the environment I guess.

I'm not going to go so far as to disagree with you, but it's more nuanced than that. The average consumer is really just a part of the system with no real choice to combat this.

Have you ever tried living a zero waste lifestyle, or giving up a car and doing everything by bicycle/walking/transit in the US? It's next to impossible unless you're in just the right perfect circumstances.

When industries become as concentrated and monopolized as they are today, voting with your dollar becomes worthless because the more "environmentally friendly" option is often made by the same company that produces the trash.

We rely on our leaders to address issues and institute the changes we want to see in society because that's their job. We're too busy with our own jobs to provide the level of activism it would take to do this. That's supposed to be why we live in a society. If they won't institute change because they're being paid not to, then it's their fault.

The means of productions are in the hands of the elite with goals of maximizing profits. Capitalist economy is built on the concept of commodities. Education is a luxury. There's no way to kickstart a movement against this without a shift that will shake the imperial core. The movement will trickle down and the effects and overall shift will be relative to the implication put into the change. We may just drive plastic to poor people land, or we may suffice the tradeoff implied by a change to them somehow. This change can be achieved even in our broken system as one bandaid fix in the stack, but we're unaware of what direction we will really take due to volatile times in which opportunity for many alternative directions is nothing like before.

Nobody especially not these big corporations will do anything for you. Their CSR department is only there so that they'll donate $50 dollars to a homeless on a Saturday. That's what they do. It's upto you

That's why I've started consuming beverages/food/snacks which come in Glass, Aluminium or packed in Steel. I also replaced my plastic drinking water bottle. Do it from a steel one now. You've to make the changes in your life yourself

FYI Some Aluminum beverage/soda cans have a thin plastic coating inside. So you are drinking out of a plastic bag inside of an aluminum can. The aluminum just provides structure to the thin plastic layer.

You seem to have no idea just how significantly the extinction of a single species can affect seemingly disparate organisms. Ecosystem balance is something on which we rely for our very survival. You will very much be affected by extinctions resulting from climate change, even if they occur on the other side of the planet.

I've never understood the concept of intentionally having a blood relation child.

Bringing new life into the world is a special occasion, but recognize there are plenty of existing young lives that need the love you desire to provide.

Would you stop loving the child you raised if you found out there was a mixup at the nursery? If yes: Think of how many Days/Months/Years/Decades of love-bonding with your child you are willing to abandon over a DNA test. If no: Then blood relation is insignificant, so adopt.

Having an adopted child is of little difference. The main difference is that parents who adopt are often rescuing a young life.

One thing many of those plastics do is breakdown into chemicals that act like estrogen in the human body. Make sperm count and fertility with it has cratered globally in the last century without any real explanation and without any relation whatsoever to how developed a given area is.

I believe we are unintentionally chemically castrating the male population of the entire planet by poisoning them with a steady dose of estrogen like chemicals resulting from plastics we ingest and inhale. If we continue on the current path, make sperm count may fall so low than traditional procreation becomes functionally inoperable as a means of perpetuating the species.

We can complain about this or that known consequence all we want like it is the end of the world, but this really could be a species level threat if these plastics and what they decompose into are responsible for the drop in sperm levels from a century ago.
