A schooner!!

You dumb bastard, its not a schooner, its a sail boat

I love that this is top comment. I love you, you beautiful bastards.

I clicked on it specifically hoping for this to be the first comment i read. Not disappointed.

A schooner is a sailboat.

"You know what, there is no Easter bunny! Over there, that's just a guy in a suit!!"

"When, Lord, when??" - Clerks III

Willam eventually saw the sailboat.

Yeah?

Heeey… would you like a chocolate-covered pretzel?

They're a bit melty, but DAMN are they exquisite.

Haven't seen it yet

Sorry, that came from a deep, personal place

I was hoping somebody would post this. šŸ˜†

And there is no Queen of England!

Queen of England

Did you mean the former Queen of the United Kingdom, the former Queen of Canada, the former Queen of Australia, etc?

The last Queen of England was Queen Anne who, with the 1707 Acts of Union, dissolved the title of King/Queen of England.

FAQ

Wasn't Queen Elizabeth II still also the Queen of England?

This was only as correct as calling her the Queen of London or Queen of Hull; she was the Queen of the place that these places are in, but the title doesn't exist.

Is this bot monarchist?

No, just pedantic.

I am a bot and this action was performed automatically.

I know bot. It's a quote, chill

You know what. There is NO Easter Bunny. Over there, that's just a guy in a suit.

Get outta here ya stupid idiot, it's a boat, are ya blind???

It's a pyramid.

I will not have you telling me boat names in my own office!

ā€œA schooner is a sailboat, stupidhead.ā€

they're minerals marie

Quit playing with yer Dinghy

Bobbing on the waves!

I'm amazed I can still do these & on a mobile.

Holy shit I grew up unable to see these and I just finally figured it out for the first time. It's totally a sailboat.

I'm 34 years old and am as excited about this as I would have been when I was 10.

i too have never been able to see these, what am i supposed to do ???

The easiest way I found to get these was to quickly go cross eyed and back while focusing in the image, works for me every time.

I think my eyes naturally relax now when I hold it close. TIL I can now see magic eyes because /r/FuckImOld

I learned how to see these by using r/crossview

You have to relax your eyes

Nothing on my body knows how to relax šŸ™„šŸ¤£

https://www.reddit.com/r/MagicEye/comments/i32l64/dont_know_how_to_view_magiceye_autostereograms/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

I have monocular vision, so there's literally no way for me to see them, yet still I try every fucking time I see one.

r/crossview can help you out. That's how I learned to see these.

Sidenote: You can also use the same technique to "cheat" at those 'Find the 5 Differences' things

The trick is that your eyes need to drift slightly apart. People try to go cross-eyed but most people are completely unable to focus their eyesight while their eyes are crossed. When you cross your eyes, the focus point falls between you and the image. When your eyes drift apart, the focus point falls behind the image.

You need to relax your eyes so that they drift apart. Think about it like having a lazy eye. You will see the image split into two in a very similar way to crossing your eyes, the difference being that because your focal point is behind the image, your eye can still clearly resolve the pattern instead of it going blurry. You will notice that the pattern kind of "repeats" and that when those repetitions overlap, it'll be extremely easy to "snap" your focus into place. Your eyes will stop drifting, and you'll begin to notice a shape appear to pop out of, or recede into the image.

The picture here is a sailboat. The one in the movie, Mallrats, is just 3 random shapes.

I remember the moment that I was able to see it.

I was laying in my room, on my bed, and after an interminably long string of failed attempts to see it, I shifted my position.

This shift in position caused my ceiling light to become visible, reflecting off of the (very glossy) pages of the book.

When I looked at the light in the reflection, that caused my eyes' focal point to change just enough to bring the image on the page into focus.

After that, it was simply a matter playing Look At The Page, Now Look At The Light. Once I did that a few times, I gained the necessary awareness of what my eyes were doing, and was thereafter able to consciously control that focus.

That was, what, 30 years ago? Wikipedia says the Magic Eye books came out in 1991, so that's probably it.

It had been so long that I was worried I'd forgotten how to do it, but I just checked, and yes -- it's a boat.

(I actually bought a software program -- from Computer City! -- that let you make these images. It translated colors into depths. I wonder what I did with it...)

Holy shit. I could do these back in the day, but I just assumed a digital version wouldn't work for whatever reason, but it toally does lol.

You have to go cross-eyed for a little while. Great way to permanently go cross-eyed…

r/unexpectedmallrats

No, no, this was entirely expected.

Especially because it is a schooner. :) They could have picked any magic eye picture, but it's a goddamn schooner.

What you need is a fatty-boom-batty blunt, and I guarantee you'll be seeing a sailboat, an ocean, and maybe even some of those big-titted mermaids doing that lesbian shit

Took my comment!

Awwww. I should have known I wasn’t the only one thinking this.

I was afraid I’d have to scroll a bit to find this. Haven’t been so happy to be wrong in quite a while.

what a Dinghy, that's a schooner

It actually is a schooner

No, a schooner has more than 1 mast

And more technically, a second mast taller than the first.

The first is the main mast. The fore mast is equal or shorter in height.

Dammit, I need to sort by "new" if I want to be the first one to drop smart references.

I’m 35 years old…been looking at these since the 90s and have never been able to see a damn thing

Edit: I’ve spent the last 30 minutes trying all your tricks and all I have is a massive headache.

Edit 2: Holy smokes! This comment blew up! There’s too many for me to respond to so here’s a blanket statement: I do not wear any form of corrective eyewear. I have near perfect vision. Also…whatever ā€œtrickā€ you swear by for these…yes, I’ve tried it. Multiple times.

A trick I used was to put them behind glass and then look at my reflection in the glass, then the picture would appear.

Thad exactly how I learned to do it. I don’t need that trick anymore.

I used to cross my eyes, but it made the picture kind of appear "inverted". I eventually learned how to do it. Just relax your eyes and try to focus on something beyond the picture. Hold the picture close.

Thanks!!! I can see a quasi 3D of a sail boat and some behind it. Decades of trying and no I can do it!!!šŸŽƒšŸŽƒšŸŽƒšŸŽƒšŸŽƒšŸŽƒšŸ‘»šŸ’€šŸ¦¹šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ§›šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ•øļøšŸˆšŸˆā€ā¬›

It’s a schooner.

A schooner is a sailboat stupid head!

You know what… the Easter bunny over there is just a guy in a costume!!!

That kid is BACK ON THE ESCALATOR AGAIN!

Like, the back of a Volkswagen?

There’s just some things you don’t talk about in public!!

No, it’s a desert topping! No, it’s a floor wax! New Glimmer! It’s both!!!šŸŽƒšŸŽƒšŸŽƒ

What a great idea

But then you’re crossing your eyes the wrong way. You have to look past the image, not in front of it (if that makes sense). Otherwise it’s debossed, not embossed.

Your reflection would appear farther back than the magic eye unless you're literally pressed up against the glass.

Ok good point.

Fuck me. For 27 years I have never been able to do one of these fucking things. Was about to have a stroke trying then read your comment. Got it to work. Realised it still looks shit lol. Thanks so much.

When I was learning how to do these, a trick I used is getting as close as possible to the image until my nose was pretty much touching the picture, then slowly moving the image away, without moving my eyes, until I saw the hidden image. It takes some practice but now I can see them just by looking at the pic for a few seconds.

Been there done that, friend! I’ve tried every suggestion in the book. Nothing. All I see is TV static

Same! I’ve never been able to see them. Still can’t nowšŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Edit: wait I just did it!! First time in 37 years woohoo!

Grats! I didn't figure them out until I was almost thirty, now I love them wherever I can find them

This is the only one I’ve ever been able to see despite my best efforts!

Thank God for Reddit

I still think they’re all just pulling our legs

It’s a conspiracy, I tell ya!

Drats! They got us, guys.

Truly believe this - I have never ever been able to see one and I am 30 years old 🤣🤣🤣

I don’t know if this is true, but an optometrist assistant once told me people that have astigmatism cannot see the pictures. I have astigmatism and cannot see the pictures, so I just believed her.

I have astigmatism and I can see them! The trick is to adjust your eye’s focus like a camera until you see it. Moving the image around also helps the pattern stick out.

Not true. Astigmatism doesn’t have anything to do with it. If you don’t have normal depth perception, though, you won’t be able to see them. Iā€˜ve always been able to see them easily and had pretty bad astigmatism before I got lasik. My husband and BFF both have a lazy eye and no depth perception and neither of them have ever been able to do it.

I am near sighted in one eye and far sighted in the other and I have never been able to see these

Ah, I have no depth perception and a lazy eye...no wonder I never see anything

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I call bullshit. I have astigmatism in both eyes and can see them.

I have astigmatism and can see the images just fine. I think some people are trying to see the pictures using the colors and scribbles when that's not part of the image.

Sorry mate, i have astigmatism too and have always been able to see them

I have astigmatism and I can see them fine

I could see them but they were always concave instead of being convex and sticking 'out', so it was super hard to tell what it was meant to be. No idea why they appeared backwards for me

It’s because you were crossing your eyes instead of moving them apart. You’re focusing on an imaginary point in front of the image instead of one behind it

Are you colourblind maybe?

That wouldnt affect the ability to see the image

One way to at least physically get a feeling for what you need to do is look at something on your phone at a normal reading distance, then look at something in the background, like the wall in the room you are in, then while you are looking at the wall, slide your phone back into your view, but stay focused on the wall. Then slowly focus on the phone. It should look like two phones coming together until they become one when you are totally focused on it. Try to control bringing the phone to focus slowly, and stopping halfway where there’s still two separate phone images but you’ve made them closer together but still not completely as one image. That’s kinda the idea. If you look at the magic eye image normally, you can see it’s pretty much a repeating pattern. What you need to do is do the thing where you’ve focused your eyes past it so you see two images, and slowly bring them together. As you bring them together with your eyes, the patterns will match and overlap at a point before you completely bring them together as one image. If you stop trying to focus and keep them as two images while the patterns line up, you should see depth in the image.

Do not try and look for the image. That’s impossible. Instead…only try to realize the truth. There is no image. Then you’ll see it’s not the image that’s hiding, it is only yourself.

If you really cant see, you can pretty much always easily force yourself to see the reverse image by crossing your eyes

this is how I learned to do it as well. Essentially it’s shifting your eye’s focus-Kind of like crossing your eyes, softly.

That’s how I learned how it see the image. Nowadays, I can see the image by letting my eyes kind of cross a little bit and get out of focus. It’s kind of hard to describe, but I can’t see the image every time.

Thank you! I'm 34 and have never been able to see them. I just tried your trick and it worked!!

33 years and I have never in my life been able to make this work until I tried what you just said. Up until 5 minutes ago I truly believed everyone was just fucking with me and that this wasn't really a thing.

THANK YOU! After 30 years I can finally do it!

This just worked for me, thanks!

Thank you so much for this! I used to get so frustrated trying to see these. Thanks to your tip I was finally able to accomplish it. Gonna spend a lot of time on r/MagicEye now lol

This didn't work for me either I just see a kaleidoscope of color.

I saw it once and now I can’t see it again!

This is the one that always worked for me

Thank you it worked for me! It took a couple of tries though.

OMG, this is like the second time I've ever gotten one. Everyone always said cross your eyes, nope, this is the secret.

Isn’t that the actual instructions from the book?

First time in 35+ years, I actually saw the same thing as everyone else.

Holy shit I just saw my first magic eye!

I’m 60, and this was the first time I’ve ever been able to see one of these images.

  1. Hold up to your nose
  2. Cross your eyes fairly hard, but don't strain
  3. Slowly bring the image away from your face and try to uncross your eyes even more slowly
  4. At some point you should either see the image, or see some distortion of what's in focus

(Optional) 5. Try to look "through" the image as if you're looking behind the piece of paper or whatever it is, or "in front" of the image as if the target is several inches closer to you than the center of the image. OR start from step 1.

I couldn't figure these things out for a few years when I was younger, then I realized there is an entire technique to it, you don't just stare or whatever.

DUDE.

31 years of frustration. You fixed it.

THANK YOU.

Same here. Also I never realized that it was supposed to just look like a relief within the pattern. I thought it was somehow supposed to come together in a full color image.

They never appeared in relief for me, they were concave. Super frustrating

You're doing it backwards then. You're crossing your eyes and focusing in front of the picture, you need to uncross your eyes and focus beyond the picture.

That's how I see it as well. So I guess a counter-relief

You been using comic book glasses or something?

Nope, I just see two of my phone and now I have a headache

it's much harder on a phone screen, try your PC monitor

Mate that's the first time in my entire life I've been able to actually see one of these fuckers. Well done.

This is how I did it on the 90s on the books. Not working for me now.

Yeah close to nose and pull away is how I first learned in the 90s. Nowadays I can kinda just look at it with my eyes unfocused. I'll see a 3d image kinda appearing and I'll shift my focus on that and then pop, there it is.

This is how I've always done it. Cross eyed first, bring up to face and slowly move the image back and then slowly uncross eyes at the same time. Also seems to work if you cross eyes and bring forward from further back and then uncross eyes.

I just go cross-eyed in order to see it. Which what everything suggested here is trying to achieve.

Its a sailboat on the ocean

Its a sailboat on the ocean

Why did it take so long to get to this, the only appropriate response to one of these images?

Theres more further down. Im just trying to let people that cant see it know. My husband apparently worked at a kiosk in a mall selling these thing and had a pretty difficult time seeing them. So, I figure let people know whats there when they cant see it themselves.

Did he own a Volkswagon too?

I would not be surprised if he told me today that the can he drove in high school was a VW lol

I’m 40 and same. Not once in my life. Including this one.

Its a sailboat

Put your eyes out of focus/double vision

Yes, I’ve tried. No luck.

Oh crap, I see the pic! I've never been able to before! I did the double vision thing! šŸ˜‚

Me too!? Well kinda? I only saw the boat for a second and didn't see any ocean or other detail. Just kind of a blob like when you look at a bright light and then look away, but in the shape of a boat.

Is that how other people see it?

I think so, for me I'd describe it like the pattern splits into a background layer and a foreground layer, and then the boat/water shape is cut out of the foreground. The boat/water are both very basic shapes, it's nothing detailed. Is that how you see it?

Oh I didn't see the backgrounds split, just the sun spot blob schooner. When I tried to focus on the schooner I lost it.

Yes it looks like multiple flat layers to me, almost like a shadowbox.

It's just the shape of the boat with the shape of some stylized waves along the bottom

Yeah everyone keeps saying to cross your eyes, but you actually uncross them, get them each to look straight so they each see a different image instead of converging on the same point.

Look at the repeating patterns, like the purple line going up across the middle row of the image, that repeats throughout the picture. Cross your eyes so that a repeated pattern lines up with the one beside it. Boom, now you see it. Every explanation I've read makes it far more complicated than it needs to be, but all it takes is to cross your eyes until the repeating patterns overlap.

BRO! I was hit or miss with these in the past. That tip worked a treat!

I always did magic eye pictures like this when I was a kid, but I never understood the appeal – I'd get the 3D effect but couldn't make out the picture.

Now that I'm older and I understand how eyes work, it's actually NOT going cross-eyed, it's the opposite! You have to go wall-eyed, UN-cross your eyes, and the easiest way to do that is to look at something far away. Takes a bit to get the hang of, but easily mastered if you can already do the cross-eyed 3D trick.

Doing it cross-eyed still produces something, but it's not the intended image and it looks nothing like a sailboat (more like a weirdly triangular set of windows).

That's how I do it! Just have to be patient and wait for your eyes to focus.

This is the way. Takes like a 1/2 second

This is totally the easiest way. When I was a kid in the eighties I used to line up wallpaper patterns with my eyes all the time, I loved it when the magic eyes came out.

I hate to break it to you, but you’re actually perceiving it depth-inverted from the way it’s supposed to be done. You need to diverge your eyes across one overlap instead of crossing them.

The way you do it, you’re perceiving the image like a cutout where the pattern recedes behind the flat plane. The correct method yields an image that pops out in front of the background plane and the whole image appears to be larger and floating out in free space, the same way that VR goggles create the impression of a large screen floating out in front of you

Get one that has two black dots on it. Use the dots to cross your eyes so that they overlap I to one.

This is the only way I could figure it out back in the day.

Same

Edit. I finally saw the picture. It’s a sail boat

Just cross your eyes slightly and boom done

Do you have a lazy eye/trouble with depth perception? People without normal depth perception (like my husband) can’t see them.

This is me. I have a depth perception problem and have never been able to see these. The depth perception test at the eye doctor is similar to these.

Nope. I have near perfect vision. Never needed any form of corrective eyewear. I just straight up cannot see these.

Same here. I have never seen the images in the 90s or now.

I'm with you. Had a monthly calendar of these in my college dorm. Could never see it. People would walk in my room, stare at it for a few seconds and say "oh I see it." Not me. Ever.

Just cross your eyes and then slowly uncross them. There's a sweet spot where you can see the image.

It took me 35+ years to see anything with these and this one is difficult because of the shape. I can see where it is, but had to check the comments for an explanation. Looks more like a blob to me than a sailboat.

Used to stare for a long time to see one (never worked for me). After 10 minutes, saw this one. Complete let down. Looked like 2 layers of the same pattern, the layer closer to me had a cutout of a sailboat. Big deal, childhood let down.

The basic trick is to stop focusing your eyes at all and it'll eventually get there. I can still do these, apparently.

!This one's a boat.!<

Me, too. Every time I look at these, I feel like Willam from Mallrats. I packed a lunch and soda, too, and I still can’t see the god damn sailboat!

Same! All of these tricks don’t work for me either and I also have perfect vision.

Looking at the photos is just vertigo inducing and the ā€œtricksā€ sound like a great way to get premature crows feet and other eye wrinkles.

[deleted]

Color has nothing to do with it. It works fine in black and white.

Yes it works fine in black and white for me as well.

I just cross and then uncross my eyes.

My technique is to just keep staring, don’t try to ā€œfixā€ you’re eyes when they’re switching your focus… just stare and zone out, let your eyes do their thing

I’ve got 15 years on you but same. Never worked for me.

If you have astigmatism it would be hard to get it to work

Bro, its a huge lie! Think emperors new clothes! Sorry guys the cat is out of the bag!

I can see these images pretty easily but it doesn't work when I'm on my phone. Maybe try on your PC.

You've basically gotta unfocus your eyes and just let the shape come into view, the colors/scribbles aren't part of the 3D image.

Make your eyes blurry then crossed eyed, then uncross them

If you can cross your eyes on demand, you should be able to see it pretty easily. Know how your vision goes double when your eyes are crossed? Do that and line up the repeating patterns in the image. Once it ā€œlocksā€ in, you’ll see it clearly

Eat mushrooms. Look again

And I guarantee you'll be seeing a sailboat, an ocean, and maybe even some of those big-titted mermaids doing that lesbian shit.

And here it took me under 6 seconds.

I’m with you. No amount of trying, tips, tricks, hints, or straight up knowledge of what it was has ever led me to seeing one of these. I’m convinced it’s an emperor’s new clothes situation. Everyone just SAYS they can see them.

Can you cross your eyes easily? Just do that while looking at the picture and as they cross/uncross you'll see a 3d image and you can focus on it. You may need to bring the picture close to your eyes.

Thinking about doing it gives me a headache.

Omg, never once saw what one of these were until just now. Wow. I'm older and have failed so many times. There is hope.

It's an elaborate prank that you're not in on...

Ditto. 42 and same friend.

For this one, tap on the pic then fit it to the full screen in horizontal and it will be easier.

Are you colorblind

Can you focus and unfocus your eyes on command? The trick is to point your eyes at it, but not look at it by unfocusing your eyes. It’s like if you’re focusing a camera lens and tuning into the right spot. I find that I get to the right focus when I let my eyes totally unfocus and relax as though I’m staring into space, but you might have to focus and unfocus a bit while finding the right spot.

Same. I've never been able to do them.

I’ve been able to see shapes pop out, but I’ve never been able to see them clearly enough to make out what they’re supposed to be. Now when I try, I can’t focus my eyes properly for like 10 minutes after.

Try going cross-eyed, moving the image very slowly away or towards your eyes, up close.

Same! I had one in my room growing up and was never able to see it šŸ˜”

Flashback. Same.

I hate doing these on my phone because afterwards everything on my phone appears 3D. Put it close your face and STARE at the center while slowly pulling it away. Don't let your eyes refocus.

You aren’t colorblind, are you?

The only suggestion I can give is to cross your eyes so that you see two images, and then very very slowly start to uncross them, and just after you start doing that, your eyes should sort of naturally find the two overlapping spaces, and if you feel that happening, hold your eyes in that position and the image should start to come into view. I can always do these things in about five seconds.

This one is kind of a hard one to see. I can usually do them pretty fast and it took me a minute or so to get it.

I was you until my wife had me use a trick, need a phone to do it. Focus on some big text about 10 feet away the put your phone in the center of your vision but focus on the text (move till you can keep some text in view.) the move your phone closer and father while trying to keep the text in focus but looking at the image. Good luck.

Mate, I've got 20 years on you.

I gave up the first time around - pull up a chair, beer?

I'm 33. I only learned to do it correctly like a year and a half ago. For my entire life, I could only get the inverse of the image to show up (like a depression in the image) and it was incomprehensible except the outline. Keep at it, you'll we that sailboat too

You are colorblind

Slowly cross your eyes and eventually you'll hit the point

I'm as old as you are and for some reason I've always been able to instantly make my eyes see the image. Even as a kid. No idea how or why. It does always strain my eyes though.

This might work for you but you'll see the inverse of what is intended... Hold the picture about 10 inches from your face. Cross your eyes are far as you can then slowly, slowly uncross them while looking at the picture. The picture should be blurry until you start to see things form. When that happens keep them crossed but let your brain connect the two pictures.

I feel you. I have shakey eye syndrome and an astigmatism in both eyes. Can't see a damn thing even with my high index glasses.

You’re supposed to look at it as if you’re looking at something behind the image.

Unfocus your eyes. Sort of like the opposite of being cross-eyed. Or another way to put it, allow yourself to space out a little bit, to the point where you’re kind of seeing double. The pattern in the image will allow you eyes to focus on slightly different angles, and the result is that you see a 3D image. In this case specifically, it’s a triangle that’s almost cut in half, and it appears as though the triangle is closer to you than the psychedelic looking background.

You can also cross your eyes and get a similar effect, but the depth perception will be inverted.

It’s kind of like a 3D effect without needing 3D glasses.

I'd start with something like this. It's easier because instead of looking for a hidden image you are just getting the same image but with depth. Let your eyes drift out of focus until the windows overlap once, and they should resolve into the same image but with depth. That's much easier than looking for a hidden image, and gives you some idea of how it should feel to look at a magic eye.

I’ve managed twice. Once was a jigsaw puzzle that still had the cellophane wrapper on and once was on here a few months ago. Never been able to see one on a screen again though. Despite that failure my bedroom wall in the early 90s was covered in magic eye posters and I had several books, postcards, etc lying around as well.

I can't see them because I have monocular vision.

I relate to this. 100 percent.

It helped me to learn how to look at old stereoscopic pictures first.

I am 46 and I've been trying it that long and I've never seen a goddamn thing. I have bad depth perception, maybe that's a part of it?

OK I just looked it up actually, if you can't see it it's usually because your eyes aren't quite operating in stereo. Having crossed eyes is one example. Your brain accepts information preferentially from the stronger eye so they're not working as a team.

Have you had your eyes checked? I couldn't see them until I got glasses. One of my eyes is much worse than the other, which might be why I couldn't get the full 3D effect.

Put your nose near the screen and slowly move away

If you can cross your eyes stare at the image in crosseyedness and try to get your eyes to focus on the image you will eventually see it. It’s not like it’s gonna pop out in full contrast you kinda have to look at the shape of the focused image you see.

You gotta relax your eyes and let them slightly cross. It’s like a specific meditative state you have to achieve, you can’t try too hard.

Being able to see these images is pretty much my peak life achievement. Trained for this moment for like a year in elementary school

Same problem. All I ever got was a headache. Not worth the headache anyway, give me Mad Magazine fold-ins over Magic Browneye anyday. No headache & I get Al Jaffee’s amazing artwork.

Same here. Since we have so much technology now there has to be an app that can show you the image.

You have to trick your eyes to see the image out of focus and then pull it away from you. You'll start to see solid shapes develop. I had a Disney book of these as a kid. Once you learn how to do it there's a muscle memory trick to it with your eyes.

I would naturally cross my eyes and see the reverse of what the image was supposed to be, cut into the pattern instead of floating over it. I thought that was how it was done, until someone showed me a way to put your nose right up against the image, looking at the middle, and you keep your eyes there as you slowly pull away.

First time it worked for me I used an overhead projector. I’m sure there’s some decent math out there and not a lot of people know (maybe no one) I figured out by chance

I'm right there with this.

There are dozens of us!

Same! Never seen one in my life. Not online, not on the giant ones in person, nada.

Are you able to make yourself see double on purpose by "relaxing" your eyes?

Put your hand infront of your face with your palm facing you and look at it. Now look past your fingers until you start to see multiple fingers. This is what you have to do with your eyes when you look at the picture. But not too much. If you look at the picture you will see multiple lines that look the same. Like someone copy and pasted the same image multiple times on the picture. Make those lines cross over each other once. Then you should be able to see the hidden image.

Okay sorry, one more tip! I've spent decades half convinced it's an elaborate hoax. I finally figured it out a month or so ago. For me, I'd start by staring through the picture with my eyes unfocused. No problem. The issue is that the image was blurry because my eyes were unfocused! So yes, start by unfocusing your eyes and looking into the distance. You'll notice there's repeating patterns in the image; what you're trying to do is overlap the patterns. Once they overlap, you need to try to hold them in place (keep them overlapped) while bringing your eyes back into focus. Start by picking a small section of the image where two patterns are clearly overlapped, and try to bring that small section into focus. THAT'S when the 3D image should snap into place. It's still tricky for me and can take a while, but given enough time I can now do it 100% of the time!

I'm 54 and have never been able to see them either. Might as well be a Jackson Pollock painting.

I was the same way. For many years, I thought this was some bullshit scam that everyone was in on but me. And then, one day, I did something that finally made it work.

For this one, I'm looking at the image full screen from roughly 1.5-2 ft. away. Tilt your head back a bit so that you can see the tip of your nose in the bottom of the picture. Now focus on the tip of your nose (go cross-eyed as best you can). Now slowly move your gaze up toward the picture. If you lose the cross-eyed feeling, go right back to focusing on the tip of your nose.

Eventually, you'll be able to move your cross-eyed focus from the nose to the picture. And that's when it starts to pop out. If you lose it, again, go back to the nose tip focus, then back to the picture. It'll happen quicker the more you keep doing it. Once the image pops out, you should be able to feel like you're gazing at it "normally" when your eyes are still probably doing that slight cross-eyed thing.

Again, this is coming from someone who couldn't see these damn things for many, many years, but -- it does work. Hopefully my technique will work for you.

Yeah I don’t think that I can see these things I have tried and tried and tried and I just can’t

I cross and slowly uncross my eyes. Works every time

Do you wear glasses or contacts? I can not see them when I'm wearing either.

If you can see these then you can also look at old Victorian stereo view images (such as this one and see them ā€œfusedā€ into a 3D image without the hand held viewer. It’s called free-viewing and fun if you’re into that sort of photo-nerdy-thing. Just google ā€œstereo view imagesā€ and you will find thousands online, or in any antique shop.

Edit: I am over the moon that so many of you have been able to see this. I hope it opens a whole new world for you. There are thousands of historic photos available for your viewing pleasure. A few of you have shared some subreddits. Thank you for those. I didn’t know about them!? Enjoy and embrace the third dimension.

Wicked cool!!! I loved this! Thanks

You can also use this or the crossviewing technique to get an edge up on those "find the difference" images. When you merge them, the differences in them stick out so it's almost like cheating lol.

You opened my mind today, Redditor. This is an awesome trick!

I had the high score on every one of those TV-screen photo match games they used to put on the corner of the bar at sports pubs everywhere, thanks to this trick. I could hit the differences before I could even perceive what they were.

So wonderful! I’m happy you have found a new thing.

haha same, i even had some people start to gather and watch me do it šŸ˜…

There's even a subreddit for this called /r/CrossView.

Depends on whether you're able to focus in front of the screen or behind. If the depth on those pics appears inverted try /r/ParallelView instead.

There is a handy little picture that can tell you which one you are viewing.

Thank you!!! Explains a lot.

Wow, I’ve spent SO MANY fucking words trying to describe this to people. Thanks so much for such a concise method of explaining it.

Did not realize this was a thing! Parallel view worked. Thank you!

This subreddit pleases me equally.

THANK YOU!!! This subreddit pleases me to no end.

Thats awesome. Never seen one of these before. Took my eyes a sec to remember how to do this… and then stop doing it.

Hahahah I equally as happy that you figured out how to uncross your eyes when done ;)

What have you done? I’ve now looked up a bunch of these. How weird and cool

I’ve just changed your life. Happy three dimensional days ahead.

You can also solve those "find the difference" puzzles if the images are next to each other.

Came here to say this. Every difference will sort of "shimmer".

Omg. I never thought of this. This makes me very happy. Thanks.

Wow that is so cool

I’m very happy you can see it!!

This is SO cool, thank you for sharing! It's fascinating how the two images turn into three side by side panels once you get the focus right.

Awww I’m so happy you got it. Enjoy!

Oh shit! I did it!

Omg. That makes me so happy. I try really hard to get people to see this, while in real life situations. And you just did it! Well done šŸ‘ So pleased!!!

Cool. Now where's the porn site version?

Photo historians often point out that the first photograph was an experiment. The second photo was pornographic.

Didn’t know I could fucking do that

So pleased you now know. You’ll lose yourself in an internet rabbit hole of just stereoview photos.

so cool! thank you for sharing this!!

umm, no that's not how it works. who told you this?

Super disappointed I can't see this. I have crossed eyes, that's why.

Can you see the magic eye things? Is it just the stereo views you’re not getting?

Nope no magic eye for me.

Yeah but maybe if you uncross your eyes it might work? Just throwing out a theory here…

By Jove, it worked! Cool!

Yaaaaay!!!!

⛵

Does the boat itself pop out?

Because I can see the effect, but I'm seeing the boat as flat/background and everything else is floating.

Yeah I can see it floating

wow it really is a sailboat i thought you guys were just kidding

I’ve only just figured out how to do these and I’m confronted with a goddamn >!dickbutt!<

That’s the one I expected to see :-)

I never could do these.

Me neither:(

[deleted]

This is ridiculous why would anyone want to do this awful sequence of events

You're doing it backwards and seeing the image inverted, you need to focus beyond the picture to see it correctly.

So, like the other commenter said: by crossing your eyes you’re actually seeing a depth-inverted version of the effect. When you see it, you probably perceive the boat as a ā€˜cutout’ recessed behind the flat plane of the rest of the picture.

The correct effect is created by diverging your eyes… like from going ā€˜crossed’ to ā€˜less-crossed-than-they-should-be’ for the distance you’re viewing the page.

When you get it right, the boat will look like it’s in front of the background, and the whole image will seem like it’s larger and farther away from you than it actually is. It’s the same effect you get from VR glasses… which are actually exploiting the same mechanism of your vision to create that effect.

absolutely do not listen to that idiot nickjames. he's doing it wrong. do not cross your eyes. leave it completely neutral. do not try to focus on the image up close. begin moving it slowly back then leave it around 1 feet away from your face, leave your focus neutral do not focus on the surface. what is suppose to happen is you're suppose to focus about 2 feet away from your eye. how do you do this without an object 2 feet away and an object 1 feet away blocking your vision? you need to practice. in the magic eye book, it has simpler images to do it on to get your eyes attuned to the scrambled images. once your eye is used to focusing at that distance even with an object closer blocking your vision, then you can see the scrambled image suddenly move inside the surface.

your brain is made to recognize patterns. so by leaving it 1 feet away, your brain eventually sees that 3d image and combines what it sees from both eyes to show you it. why start out super close and don't cross your eyes? the purpose of starting close is so you can not focus on the surface of the image. so if you cross your eyes, you are focusing on it. crossing your eyes was a huge misunderstanding back in the 90s. so most people who couldn't do it are people who force their eyes to cross so they can see the surface of the image. they're trying to get both eyes to have the same vision, which is what you don't want.

once you get good, you can literally do this from 5 feet away.

You're literally crossing your eyes by doing your method you knob-head.

lol no you don't you idiot.

I may have left out a crucial piece of information. I have a lazy right eye, can't focus at all.

You know how if you hold your finger in front of your face but look in the distance beyond, there's two fingers? That's what you gotta do. It makes the two images merge as one.

I tried that and it made my right eye have a seizure.

I’m sorry. I will send money for medical treatment.

I'm American, you can't afford medical treatment. Lol

Nothing works for most of us.

oh that's a good one. yea you're right.

More specifically, you have to do this (create the two double images like you do of your finger) to the repeating image, just to the degree where two split pieces of the repeating pattern overlap each other.

Don't kill yourself trying to do all the tricks that people say to do it. A lot of people just can't see them because their eyes don't work quite perfectly in stereo.

Neither could I. Although now I can. My top tip is to hold the picture in front of you at about half an arm's length. Then look at the other side of the room (like a lamp or a chair). Slowly move the picture inbetween the two while still focussing on the background object.

Just stare and stare at that distant object (even though you can't see it) and just don't focus on the picture. Then bam! you'll see a 3D picture and then can adjust your eyes to look at it

There happens to be an entire subreddit dedicated to r/MagicEye

That sub is where I finally unlocked these after a lifetime of not getting it.

Did you FINALLY see the sailboat, Willam?!

/r/CrossView for a similar (and I think better) experience.

Those just give me a headache

It's because you're forcing the cross-eye viewing. The trick is to relax the eyes as if you're looking into the distance.

Yeah I know how to do it, I'm not trying to cross my eyes. Those just don't work for me like the magic eye does.

Awesome! Thanks!

The stuff on that sub is way ahead of anything I saw in the 90s

Yes, but I still enjoy it!

wait, is this a sailboat on waves? did this just work for the first time ever for me?

I was going to make a Mallrats reference, but it really is a sail boat.

These used to frustrate the heck out of me. My friends and everyone could see it, I never could. It made me feel embarrassed and like I didn't fit in. So as soon as someone said they could see it and would say the answer, I would like and say "I see it too, it's a boat", even though I couldn't see anything. The thought of this memory really brings back that feeling of anxiety it used to give me.

All I see are triangles and a line that could be the horizon. Could be a sailboat.

Can somebody just circle what the fuck we are supposed to be seeing instead of telling us the tricks that never work for the vast majority of us?

not really. here's a vague idea of the shape that pops out when it works: https://imgur.com/a/jB1Z7Qi

Appreciate you taking the time to do that for me, buddy. Ty

I don't feel like I'm missing out. This is underwhelming lol

It’s much more impressive when you actually see it. The image is in 3D, and appears to be like a hologram

This is the first time I’ve ever seen this, thank you. I can’t make it ā€˜work’, but shit at least I know what I should be looking for now

The detailed parts are too hard (especially because I have to keep switching my vision to look at it, memorize positions based on the background pattern positions, and then switch back to normal vision to draw), but here are the basic bits and their positions. (It may be shifted one unit to the right, so it might be this. Too hard for me to tell)

You can’t circle it because it’s not one thing, it’s two things that you have to cross your eyes slide together to turn into one thing to get it to stand out from the background.

The image here is like 8 columns of repeating elements. I see the suggestions say to overlap the instances of each column, but what parts? Just overlap two columns? Or does it need to be all, I can’t cross my eyes to make the eight into one without unfocusing, can’t make an image out of a blur,

Just slide one column over into the closest one, the image will jump out. Try a stereograph first, it’s just two pictures and should be easier to tell when you’ve got there.

https://library.brown.edu/dps/curio/stereoscopy-digitized/

Edit: never mind, with the photographs you have to slide it way further over to get them to line up which is probably harder for people who are having a hard time with it. Basically though you have the two pictures and when you’re seeing it right you’ll see three pictures and the one in the middle will look 3d. It’s the same principle for the stereograms though, just less sliding over. Move one column with your eyes into the nearest column, pick one in the middle.

Sailboat with waves and maybe a cloud on top but it looks like it was cut off

I am 100% not shitting you right now. I have seen these stupid posters and books and calendars for decades and I've NEVER been able to see whatever the hell you're supposed to see.

UNTIL RIGHT THE FUCK NOW.

I'm looking at it and remembering all the people saying stupid shit like, "oh you gotta look paaaast it." or "you gotta move it back and forth" and I started trying it the same stupid methods they never worked that I've tried for years when all of a sudden.... A freaking sailboat appears!! And water! And it's actually kinda 3D!! I don't know why I'm so excited about this!

Yeah I never saw it haha

There is a trick that works well with glass but all sort of starting and it and zoning out helps.

See also r/magiceye and r/parallelview.

There's also /r/TruckStopBathroom if you need a catch-all sub for sharing anything in.

Well played…

They didn't just disappear. I remember 2-3 years where new stuff was coming out (I wanna say 1995-1997?)

Is it a sailboat?? Because if so I've finally seen one for the first time in almost 30 years. If it isn't, oh well, I still saw something besides a blur.

It's a sailboat, big sail pointing to the right.

To this day I still can’t see these damn things

Holy shit it's actually a sail boat.

I have a tried and true method that works for me around crossing my eyes.

If you look at the picture, you notice how there are parts that look very similar, as if they repeat across the picture. Pick two, stare between them, and cross your eyes slowly. As you cross them, the two pieces will overlap and at that point your brain almost locks on this newfound design. From there, if you move the picture a little - left and right, up and down - you’ll start to see the differences in depth that create the outline of the hidden picture.

You’re seeing a depth-inverted version of the effect - you actually need your eyes to diverge across one set of the repeated patterns. Then the subject will pop out in front of the background instead of recessing into it.

That’s pretty amazing! I always thought I was seeing it the way it was supposed to be seen! I tried again, not crossing my eyes, and I ended up seeing it the true way!

I can manually cross my eyes in different ways and see both versions! The one where the image 'pops' out and the other where it 'sinks' into the background

Damn it, after all these years. I still can not see anything...

To this day I can't see anything. This is why they dissapeared.

And…..I still see nothing! šŸ˜‚

All of these years and I still can’t do these things. I always thought it was a joke

My local paper started printing these with the Sunday comics. The first one, I stated at it all Sunday afternoon trying to see it. I finally got it just before bed.

Could never see this. Still can. Yes, I’d put a finger in front of my face, I’ve crossed my eyes. Y’all are ducking with me, I’m pretty sure.

Sailboat

Awesome sailboat!

Mallrats references incoming!!

It’s a schooner!!!

Sailboat on water I think? I haven’t seen these since elementary school I use to be obsessed lmao

I still got the ability to see the image without needing any tricks boiiiii

I still got it!!!! ā›µļø

Ahoy!

https://youtu.be/sahnApE0I7c

Also: https://youtu.be/_509Qkome7c

Still got it, baby!

These were a giant government psyop to find out who the liars were.

There were no hidden images in those fucking things and nobody will convince me otherwise.

All of you are liars!

im still waiting for the magic part to kick in so i can see something. 20+ years and i still dont know what the fuck people are talking about

I used to HATE these with a passion because I could never see the ā€œpictureā€ until the day some rando told me how to see them and since then they are some of my favorite things ever! I wish they were still around, I love looking at these, especially on certain mind-altering substances.

I have literally never been able to make these work

Same. I always looked at them in the Sundays papers as a kid and never saw a single thing.

"A schooner is a sailboat, stupid head!"

YOU KNOW WHAT? THERE IS NO EASTER BUNNY! OVER THERE THAT'S JUST A GUY IN A SUIT!

they used to print one in the newspaper every day (or every week?) and my grandma and i would cut them out and save them 😭🧔

Picked up a 60 page magic eye book for $3 at a yard sale in June. A lot more fun then when I was a kid because now I know how to see it.

God I love these I scoop up every book I see

I used to do these wrong as a kid

I would stare at it and cross my eyes which would make the picture inverted

Mall rats!

Not inexplicable. They were a new thing, and they’re really cool for about five minutes. So they were really popular for about five minutes and then they went away.

I used to do this with chain link fences before I ever saw one of the images

Never once have these worked for me.

There’s even a Seinfeld about it

Finally someone mentioned that lol. There's like an entire episode about them where Kramer buys one of them and drives Mr. Pitt mad with it.

Turned Mr. Pitt into a damn Nazi! LOL Great episode

I've been trying to find these at my local library but they are ALWAYS checked out. So hard to explain to children what they are (and how to see the hidden image) without an example.

Its a schooner

I can’t do those things.

Never seen anything in 32 years. I hate these. I have given up.

Sailboat. Still got it. Nice.

Am I the only one who takes FOREVER to see these. I mean eventually but seriously I thought my eyes are bad or my brain is slow

Reddit 2035 will have this exact same post except it will be fidget spinners.

There’s still there actually; you just have to look through them to see them.

It’s a sailboat!

A boat on water.

sailboat

Sailboat?

Well you know what! There is no Easter Bunny! That over there is just a guy in a SUIT!

I suddenly remember seeing these in the newspaper comics section.

I had so many books, but never saw anything.

Never once was I able to see a damn thing in one of these.

i could never see the sailboat :(

That’s a nice sailboat.

To this day ive never made a single one work

For some reason whenever I see one of these the image is inverted.

I did it! Wow I’ve never been able to do these before.

Ha ha, you dumb bastard. It’s not a schooner. It’s a sailboat.

You know what? THERE IS NO EASTER BUNNY!!!

And everyone had that one friend that could never see the image and either lived with their frustration or thought it was all a hoax.

Me right now.

Now I finally see the sailboat. I was expecting a hard outline but there isn't one. The hidden image and the background don't have outlines but the hidden image, once you see it, will pop out a bit.

[deleted]

sorry... you've got to have binocular vision in order to see them.

It’s not ā€œpartā€ of the reason, it’s the only reason. You must have both eyes in order to see them. It is impossible without

I hated those, I could never see anything no matter what I did. Still can't even now.

Never been able to do them sadly

30 years later and I still can't see shit

OH SHIT IT'S ACTUALLY A SAILBOAT

It's a sailboat!

I’ve never been able to decipher one of these, what’s wrong with me

I could never get these to work for me.

It’s a boat, right?

Yeah, but not a very good one.

These fill me with a deep, irrational rage and I am unhappy to see one of the bastards in my feed today.

I could never figure out how to do these

I immediately thought Mallrats

Why was I so certain it was going to be rick astley lyrics

I can't see shit

Never been able to see these. Apparently if you have a stigmatism then you don’t see them.

I have an astigmatism and I can see them

Also have it; also can see them.

Not exactly true if you have corrective lenses you’ll be fine. I have stigmatism, took a while but I got there. Mind you I think it takes a while for anyone to get it really.

Edit: but as this guy says, being blind in one eye is a big problem here. Sorry dude.

It’s not true at all. I have astigmatism and I did it with my glasses off just as quickly as with my glasses on.

True. I can do it either way with or without. I was just making an educated guess that the lack or corrective lenses might interfere with the merging of images in the same way that ā€œone bad eyeā€ might interfere. But then everyone is different. Sometimes it will work. Sometimes it won’t.

Not true, astigmatism doesn’t matter. Depth perception is needed, so being blind in one eye or often times a lazy eye means you can’t do it.

I have astigmatism and I can see em

I have 2 stigmatisms, one in each eye.

The word is astigmatism. And I have it pretty severely and can do these just fine. This is about making a disconnect between distance and focal distance. After some practice anyone can do it.

Being blind in one eye as well apparently. I could see the images before the 16d nail went kachow into my eye but not after

I think we’re stereogrammatically blind.

I see them fine without glasses. You just have yo be really really tired of life and know how to zone out at will.

As a colorblind kid I hated this shit

Has nothing to do with color blindness, it has to do with normal stereo vision. A colorblind friend of mine can see these instantly.

You have to focus on a point beyond the image, if you're viewing it on a screen with a glossy display, focus on your reflection instead of the text and it should pop into focus. That's assuming normal depth perception stereo vision, people who have a lazy eye or other issues with depth perception can't see it.

I could never see anything in these. Convinced I was being punked by everyone, you can’t change my mind.

Cover of Dave Matthew's Remember Two Things album.

People today would say it’s an evil vaccine or tracking device

Not a good one.. thought it might be some vague trees or something

They didn’t ā€œdisappear.ā€ You just have to screw up your eyes in order to see them. Next time you’re in the mall, try it!

Are people still falling for these?

There's nothing there.

There's never been anything there in any of them.

This super-cheap emperor is butt-naked! Stop pretending you "can see it", you pathetic peer pressured liars.

i’m convinced you have to have shitty vision or low IQ to see anything.

edit: read this whole comment section and your suggestions suck. if you have to write more than 3 sentences then y’all are on some shit.

Nah. I can see them. Its shitty vision and high IQ.

20/20 over here. sorry i can’t see between all the scribbles.

Your vision is too good.

Tip: these usually don’t work if you’re colour blind

Not true. You have to have normal depth perception to be able to see them, color blindness has nothing to do with it.

Loved these things. Especially when I was with someone who couldn’t see them.

I have one on my profile

I could never see those!

Just like the ā€œkeep calm & ...ā€ phase we went through. Thank god that’s over!

And I’ve still never had one work for me

Yeah, why did they stop making those?

This never worked for me and I don't know why. Is it because I have an astigmatism! Or maybe because I have ADHD? Because I only see repeating patterns of dots and colors and nothing else.

Idk. I don’t see it either, it’s honestly frustrating and makes me feel like the people that see it are all faking and hopping on a train to fit in.

We’re not. The images work by having a repeating pattern with minor imperfections in it. If you focus on a plane behind the image, the repeating pattern lines up and the imperfections are interpreted by your brain as a 3D image

No, I have both of those and I can see them.

I’ve actually read anecdotal evidence that people with adhd have an easier time seeing them. Like, you don’t have to do the ā€œpull away from your nose trickā€ to do them, you can just instantly snap them in to focus.

Source: I have both astigmatism and adhd and I can snap them into focus with zero effort

If you want a more technical explanation, what’s happening is you have to focus on an imaginary point behind the image. Don’t focus on the image, focus on the wall then move the image into your view. Without shifting focus, the repeating pattern should snap together and the minor imperfections in the pattern form a 3D image

Disappeared?? Impossible. I've never heard of a fad suddenly disappering.... we must investigate. It could have links to 9-11

Yes and I swear usually I couldn’t see it! So much shame I felt for it šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Very cool that you can get the effect zoomed in and then zoom out and it’s still there!!!

I remember when they used to have these in the newspaper. My mom would clip them out for my dad and I to look at together :)

Oh man could we have an entire Subreddit dedicated to this stuff!? I used to love these!

There is one r/MagicEye

Awesome thank you!

I had an aunt that had these framed hanging in her house lol

I never got these to work. Mostly all I got was eye strain

It was our fidget spinner. I couldn't see them so it just made me mad seeing all of them.

I can see it but I still don’t know what it is … I see layers of spires? What is it

Finally!

Kinda like SquidGame last year.

I have a knack for these: i can defocus my eyes on command enough

It works if you go cross eyed, but it inverts the image. Proper way is to just stare at it while moving the head back and forth slowly, but I only ever got it to work that way once.

That infamous website of Goatse used a magic eye to shock somebody with the Goatse image which was a one-time play .GIF file using .JPG as part of it's filename

Sometimes silly images like these got people staring at them, and some people set up traps on the Internet with them.

I've seen multiple Magic-eye goatses. Not a .GIF, just unfocus your eyes and realize that you're looking down into that anus in 3D.

Sailboat. These were always super easy for me without having to do the whole "pull slowly away from your face" trick. I still think they're cool.

I could never get these to work

I could never see these. I got a book of them for Christmas. Never saw a single one.

These are my favorite illusions! I once found a picture at goodwill and the art was one of these and I loved the secret double image.

I was the kid that could always solve these, instantly lol.

ā›µļø

I tried to get these from the library for my son and was amazed that they didn’t have a single one.

probably a test the aliens sent out to see if we've evolved to see them

Always thought those were pretty cool

Yeah I've never been able to get these to work

You need to change the focus of your eyes. Unfocus sort of, and you can move the image around see the 3d

I see boobs. Multiple.

These were in every single doctor’s office. Along with that toy with the various winding thin metal rods of 4 colors that you have to slide wooden circles along the curves, as well as highlights magazines from 1992.

In the town I grew up in, there was a fish and chips shop that had a bunch of these all over the walls.

My friends and I would go and get $5 of chips and sit there and eat them while trying to figure them out. Once I was able to unfocus my eyes I could get them all on command, even now I can still just pop them into being visible.

Similar to what happens over in r/crossview

I used to have a Magic Eye book as a kid and I would get pissed off because I couldn't see anything lmao

they use computers to make them ... big computers

r/magiceye

I had this cool Disney magic-eye book when I was a kid, once I figured out how to do it I was like O_o whoaaa

They never worked for me

Sailboat!

As a kid, I tried to see these all the time and failed.

I just saw the damn sailboat for the first time. Feels good.

37 sailboats in a row.

If you think a picture is cool try a video!

I just bought myself a magic eye daily calendar. I audibly gasped when I saw it at the store.

It’s a sailboat!!

Color blind guy here. With a stigmatisim. I can see these now. When I was younger I either didn't have the patience or care to see these. But I can now... Thankfully.

I have never been able to see one of these. I always called them sailboats no matter what anyone else said.

At first I thought it was just a triangle and a weird building.

Hey its a sail boat

Yay! I see it!!!! Finally got one of these damn things to work.

I could never do these growing up and I couldn't understand why. I've since learnt that I'm fairly colour-blind; could that be the reason?

I was frustrated that I couldn't see these as a kid so I got one and learned that if I look at the picture but stared past it, it would suddenly appear. Blew my mind the first time.

Anyone else have trouble seeing the image on their phone?

i could NOT get these things to work until I was like 17

I've loved magic eyes since I was a child, and seeing so many posters in here saying that they still can't see it is distressing to me, so I'll try to explain how to learn how to see these in case it can be of help.

When I was a kid we had a polka dot couch. That couch is how I learned how to do magic eyes. I used to enjoy crossing my eyes and making the polka dots on the couch "lock" together in different patterns. When your eyes cross, everything gets blurry, but if you can lock patterns together like I did on those polka dots, you can still see them clearly.

Magic eyes work the same way. There are repeating patterns in the image, and you just have to unfocus your eyes and get those patterns to "lock" in your field of view. The only way to see a magic eye is to relax your eyes and stop trying to focus on the picture.

You can practice by crossing your eyes, which is a little easier than unfocusing them. If you cross your eyes slowly, your eyes will start to point towards each other, and you'll see the image turn double. Line the double images together so that the repeating patterns "lock," and boom! suddenly the image will come in focus. Crossing your eyes will produce an inverted version of the image, so the next step is to practice unfocusing them.

This works in the same way, only instead of pointing your eyes closer together, you are pointing them further apart. The easiest way to do this is look at the book, then look at the far wall or something else far away from you. Like when you crossed your eyes, you'll see two copies of the book while your eyes are focused on the far wall. The trick now is to get those repeating patterns to line up while your eyes are still focused on the wall. Once you can get those patterns to "lock," look back at the book. Your eyes will remain locked in their focus, and the 3d image will pop off of the page and you can look at it in detail.

What makes magic eyes so hard to see at first is that we don't usually manually control our eyes in that way. Normally we look at something, and your body unconsciously does the work of focusing on the object you are looking at. Once you've learned to manually control the muscles that focus your eyes, doing magic eyes becomes much easier!

I could never see these when they were popular. I still can’t at my age. Most definitely not color blind either.

I could never see them.

Couldn't see that continuing.

Is that poop emoji?

r/magiceye you’re welcome

These always show up inverted for me so I can never figure out what the image is supposed to be. Instead of the boat popping out, the background pops out and there's a "cutout" of the boat instead.

That was fuckin crazy!

Looks like the boat painting from the Simpsons, that hangs above their couch.

I see it, but I'm still not sure what it is. It looks like shapes.

I never could see the sailboat.

Ugh that took me back!

What you need is deep focus…

These are still fun as fuck to do! This one looks pretty cool.

My husband is essentially 100% colorblind, and he told me he could never see these. He also can’t see any sort of effect from light prisms. It made me so sad.

If I ever go missing, I hope they don’t ask him for my hair and eye color descriptions.

Colorblindness has nothing to do with not being able to see them.

this is the first time one of these things worked for me!!!!!!!!!! I saw a sailboat thing.

A had one of these books

could never get those till i tried on my phone. i’m not sure if the smaller size or brightness helped

It was training people to activate their pineal glands / third eyes and the black ops community didn't like that. You shouldn't be learning how to astral project at the shopping mall! That's the opposite of the mall's mission. Matrix good, consumerism good. Third eye bad! Magic eye bad.

Lies. They’re all lies.

Or perhaps all of our eyes adjusted to the hidden images. They are still out there every day. We just see them as normal books, posters, etc.

Basically, look at the picture but change the distance of your vision while doing so. Going from a near-sighted to a far-sighted range of vision you'll be able to pick out the difference in depth perceptions that is causing the effect in the picture.

Holy shit. This is the first time I’ve been able to see one of these. So I’m not sure what it’s supposed to look like. What I see looks like two-layers of the background pattern, with the top layer having a sailboat-shaped hole cut out of it.

Please tell me that is what it’s supposed to look like and not a full-on realistic picture of a sailboat. Lol.

I've never been able to see one and I just saw the sailboat it's was all 3d in shit and now I can't get it do it again. What was the trick?

Channel 77

I used to be able to do this. Can't right now

It’s a sailboat

I loved these! I can still just automatically see them. Pissed my friends off because they couldn’t.

Not Penny’s Boat

Looks like the painting above the couch on the Simpsons

I used to hate these as a kid bcos I could never do them, I just learned how to do them a couple years ago

Pretty sure they subtly realized they were causing people to give gradually themselves wonky eyes and lost their publishing and marketing budgets.

I was really good at these as a kid. I'd be at a relative's flipping through the book saying "dragon.. spaceship... pirate..." and go through the whole book in like a minute. It was like a super power. I learned how to do it by putting a piece of glass on the image and stare at my own reflection and eventually I could see it. With a little practice I could do it at will.

Haven't done one in years, took me a couple seconds for my eyes to remember how to do it. Still got it lol.

is it the adidas symbol?

those made me crossed eye and gave me an eyesore

Almost 40 years of not being able to see these freaking things. Just stop already

It’s a sailboat :)

my problem with these is that i've always done them with the "crossview" technique, which is basically crossing your eyes until some patterns merge and then being able to focus your eyes on the photo at the same time. But these are meant to be done with "unfocusing" your eyes, like you were looking at the horizon - but then being able to focus on an image in front of you, which i can rarely do.

So to me, the image is inverted and goes inward instead of outward which always makes it harder to interpret lol.

I swear these are just prints of patterns used for happy pants.

What you need is a phatty boombatty blunt, then you'll see a sail boat, a schooner, and maybe some big tittied mermaids doing that lesbian shit!

Hate 'em. Never got 'em to work.

i remember these at the dentist office and i swear they never worked and hurt ur eyes

i feel like at least 50% of the people who ever tried to do this never managed to do it. i had my 9-12 year old nieces and nephews do it this and they gave up in like 5 seconds. i learned how to do this myself from the book when i was 10. kids these days.

Still can't see a damn thing

I'm 32 and I have not once ever been able to see any of these and I genuinely am not entirely sure that they're real. Pretty sure they're fake and people just placebo themselves into seeing something lol

I still cannot see them. I always pretended:/

That ship has sailed?

Took me a little bit but I’ll save you the trouble; it’s says weird history

Willam eventually saw the sailboat Was so excited to post this. Didn’t even read the earlier comments. It seems as though everyone INCLUDING THEIR FUCKIN MOTHER beat me to it

It’s a schooner

Show me the sailboat!!!

And fractals!

I try so hard at these, but apparently astigmatism can make this very hard to do.

wait you are supposed to see something? Today I learned :-)

Fucking Das magische augen! Parents brought it from Austria in 1996 or something!

Saw it extremely sharp and in perfect 3D, but have no clue wtf I was looking at.

Sailing Boat

If you want to read more about it, https://eyeondesign.aiga.org/the-hidden-history-of-magic-eye-the-optical-illusion-that-briefly-took-over-the-world/

Whenever I see something with a repeating pattern that's the right distance between repeats I try to do this and it makes the pattern 3D.

You can actually see one, two, or three sailboats…

I am not sure If I am supposed to see something here but uhhh, yea I am not seing shit.

The front page to ā€˜the book’

God these take me back…….

I could never see the hidden image because of my lazy eye.

I have no idea why, but I'm really good at these. Such a useless talent.

Yeah these were cool

Can’t anyone else just … look at these and see the image? Like it’s just there for me. I love these.

Lmao I saw it for a solid 5 seconds, thought I was in another dimension there for a second. Then I looked away and can’t see it again šŸ˜“

I swear that because I got really good at seeing these, that it made it really easy for me to look at the 3DS's 3D effect without feeling any strain.

I was always able to see this really easily/quickly as a kid (still have the useless skill as an adult!)

I remember challenging other kids in my class to "Who could get the most pictures right the fastest", and I just about always won.

Talk about setting my fellow classmates up for failure

I could never tell what I was looking at. Everyone is like oh cool a pirate ship and I'm just like well.i see skme sort of 3D shape?

All the advice about ā€˜looking through it’ and ā€˜un/crossing your eyes’ is useless if the person trying to see the picture is expecting the squiggles to resolve into some distinct lines that make up a drawing - which is what a lot of people expect.

When these images ā€˜work’, you will still see the same squiggly pattern. It’s like the image is embossed on patterned wrapping paper, though with much more depth and with varying depth.

Got in focus straightaway but had no idea what it was until the comments

It’s a robot right?

They're probably still hanging on the wall, you're just not staring at the wall long enough to see it. Try starting with your nose to the wall then back up.

I have to take an eye exam every year for work. The depth perception portion can be a little tricky. The day before my exam I use a Magic Eyes book to practice. Even if it doesn’t help, I still have fun!

I can’t do it anymore, no matter how hard I try I just end up with a headache now.

I was frustrated that I couldn't do these, then completely mastered it. It's a sort of okay skill for trying to find differences between two things. I've used it in graphic design & printing to compare two images to see if there's any changes made in old artwork vs. new artwork.

It's not inexplicable. The phenomenon is kinda neat, then the novelty wears off.

interesting

If anybody is really good at these, you can try to ā€œstack the imageā€ by letting your eyes slip out one more level (as in… you’re already seeing the magic eye image, and then you do the ā€˜magic eye technique’ again). The effect is that you get an almost recursive thing where there’s a smaller boat in front of a doubled rear boat, and a whole extra layer of water.

Ah I got something that looks like a triangle. Is it a boat?

Sailboat/ship?

Had hoped for dick butt, was dissapointed..

I see pizza slice

They are still there, you just can’t see them.

Confirmation I was born in the 80’s: a sailboat!

Wow, I have never ever been able to see these things. And I actually saw this one, this is the first one of these ever. It only took me 30 years to get one. Thank you internet stranger.

And I still can’t see shit

I still can't see shit.

I'm starting to think I'm one of the few who can separate the convergence point of my eyes at will, like any other muscle in the body.

I must have been high as a kid or something because once I was able to see the images, they were crystal clear and looked just as real as can be. But now, I can only make out the 3D effect but I can't clearly tell what the item is.

I've never been able to do it... I have a condition in my right eye where my macula (the center of your vision) is offset by 0.5 mm. It's enough that I'm left eye dominant and whenever I close my left eye my right eye vision is sharp, but the center focal point is so small that I can't read anything or pick out any discernable features. It's really weird to describe because it's not blurry! There's just not enough information for my brain to pick out details like all of the edges of letters.

As such, I can't see the image in these things. My depth perception is about 30%, and these things rely on depth perception to work.

I'm silmilar to you, my vision is total shit.

I'm right eye dominate, with sever astimatism in my left eye. And I'm near sighted.

I promise, if you take the time, you can see the shape.

Just start with your face really close to the picture... And just let your eyes cross... try not to focus on anything. Eventually you're vision will blur. The minute your eyes try to focus on a sliver, or color, you've lost it and you'll have start over.

But eventually you'll notice that the colors seem sharper than they did before, even though you are cross eyed and not really looking at anything. That's the start of it.

Then slowly move your head back like maybe a centimeter. Keep your eyes unfocused... If the colors still seem sharp you're almost there. Just continue to let your eyes stay unfocused.

Eventually you'll get it.

The key is to wait and move your head untill your crossed eyes recognize the picture as being brighter or more vibrant than it is when you're just sitting back and looking at it normally.

The pictures they ā€œrevealedā€ were nothing special. Oh look, a … cube. Sigh.

Dave Matthews Band’s first album had one on the cover, it was a peace sign

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remember_Two_Things

dude, I loved that album, but I got it boot legged. I never knew that was thier cover!

Thanks!

It’s a great album šŸ˜ŠšŸ‘šŸ¼

without a doubt. I loved the exuberance of the mid 90s, Dave Mathews encapsulated it.

You don't see the sailboat?

It was a scheme from the Illuminati/aliens/Bilderberger/whatever, to hypnotize us all. Didn't work, they lost billions. Somewhere in the desert is a big hole, filled with millions of those books, right beside the E.T. games.

It's a sail boat with waves in the foreground.

I've seen better. But I saw this one!!

Spotted it in 2 seconds...still got it!

Why can I still not get these.

Stare as I might, not once was I ever able to see the hidden image.

Found one of these on Amazon just to let my kids try. šŸ“¦ AmazonšŸ“¦

I absolutely hated those things as a kid. Being colorblind and not having anyone understand that, everyone just thought I was too stupid to see whatever it was supposed to be. It was a real self esteem drain when your parents and teachers keep telling you that you are too dumb to tell colors apart.

What, like the back of a Volkswagen?

This is literally the first time I've ever been able to see it, and now I just don't know what to do with myself...

Boatā¤ļø

I can't do these online but I can get them in a second with a physical picture.

I just came here to do a Cnrtl+F for "Sailboat."

I feel like Mr. Pitt right now

My mom bought me a book of these, and told me to look through it like a window. And I was like ā€œhow tf do you look through something????????ā€

It always disappeared quickly when you didn’t squint your eyes just so and stare into the abyss.

I see the dancer spinning to the left.

I’ve still never been able to see these the way they’re supposed to be seen. If I cross my eyes, I can see what looks like a cut-out from the page, but I’ve never successfully done it the other way where you just stare and the image pops out at you.

I just can’t fucking see it because my right eye is +3, fuck that shit

Couldn't ever see it then. Still can't see it now. :(
