Bro get WVFS V89 out of Tallahassee. The Voice of Florida State. Amazingly well curated music and a huge variety of shows. Literally some of the best college radio I've ever heard (and I used to do college radio and frequently listened to other colleges across the country).

Edit: since this comment is currently top, I'd like to shout out r/fsusports. Small but fun sub that supports all NCAA sports at FSU!

Grew up in Tallahassee and can say v89 is top tier. Also it may be one of the few things I miss from back home

You can listen online if you go to their website. Just Google them.

This is the only radio station I listen to. Go NOLES!

Go NOLES! BEAT GEORGIA TECH TODAY!

The Voice is University of Miami, actually.

Edit: downvotes don't make me any less right you guys. I literally worked for the station for two years.

https://www.wvum.org/about

Founded in 1968, WVUM is the award winning, completely student-run radio station of the University of Miami. ā€œThe Voiceā€ broadcasts over-the-air throughout South Florida and streams worldwide.

Do you know how many radio stations are called The Voice? It’s like a newspaper being called Herald, Gazette, Times. I’m pretty sure there’s a station that calls itself The Voice in Tampa Bay and in other states.

The person you're replying to was not talking about WVUM, they were talking about WVFS. You're getting downvotes because you didn't read their comment.

It's also FSU's coege radio.

"WVFS Tallahassee 89.7FM (also known as ā€˜The Voice of Florida State’ and affectionately referred to by many simply as V89)..."

https://wvfs.fsu.edu/about/basics/

The have the same nickname then. TIL.

Yeah didn't know that either. Lame they're downvoting you

This is as pedantic as your comment above, but they’re not the same, actually.

One seems to be ā€œThe Voice of Florida State,ā€ which is what the parent comment said. As in the voice of Florida State University in Tallahassee.

Hope this helps!

WVUM is "the voice of the University of Miami" as well. Apparently they have the same nickname, which I didn't know until yesterday.

Yeah well the WVFS is not the same as WVUM so that could’ve gave it away

I didn't know they had the same nickname until yesterday and assumed he'd got the stations backwards.

I'm sorry for not having a better handle on Florida college radio nicknames.

https://imgur.com/YQh8LRV.jpg

You’re wrong but thanks for the love. I was on air from 2000-2004 and at one point I was both pretaped shows and had 6 different time slots so my voice was the voice of The Voice for like 40-50 hours each week.

I love that this is the top rated comment. It was my first thought when I visited his site. I miss that station so much.

You can listen online!

Now you can listen on https://www.campus-fm.com/ ! Just added (though the WVFS streaming link seems to work better on mobile)

Always interesting to see your home town mentioned in posts.

So happy to see people using this!

I'm reading all the comments and feedback and will spend some time adding stations + building out new features soon! Please let me know if you have any suggestions :)

EDIT: Added a bunch of stations, now working on a more intuitive layout and stability/loading issues on desktop

I haven’t even opened your application yet, but I cannot express how much I am looking forward to doing so when it’s not 3AM, and I have to worry about waking kids/dogs with awesome music. Thank you for your hard work, my human. 😁

If you're open to stations not in the US: https://strathfusion.com/

here's my local for when you get to adding more: https://kxua.uark.edu/

This would be dope as an iOS/android app too (that could continue playing while not the active window). Thanks for making this! Super cool

firefox usually lets you do this with a browser detection override.

It's great! Clean interface. Stations load instantly. Growing selection. Keep it up.

I only get a "Success! The your_domain virtual host is working!" White page 🄲

Did you get the Reddit hug of death maybe or are your content not available in France?

Cheers!

I didn't expect this to be so popular, so I didn't think to buy a domain name until this morning (also didn't check and see that someone else already owns campus.fm lol). You can find it now on https://www.campus-fm.com/

Thanks it works now!!

How did you work out (aound?) licensing?

The college stations manage the licenses themselves! On the site I'm just aggregating their public streaming links. Not sure if that's against the rules, but it's a pretty small app + I'm not making any money so I haven't had any problems yet.

You adding stations? Here is Fresno state (csu Fresno)

Hell yeh, top tier programming here.

Damn did not expect to see my bulldogs on Reddit today. Pretty cool to run across another bulldog in the wild

We are everywhere and nowhere all at once

UC Santa Cruz - KZSC go banana slugs!

seconded, one of my favorite radio stations period. found out about some real gems from them!

I added KZSC today + recently built out a bunch of new features!

Don't forget WSBF 88.1 over in Clemson!

Once a shark, always a shark. WSBF till I die.

Very cool. It functions well!

What a great idea! I work on a college campus and always love tuning in to the student-run radio station. They play some gnarly stuff!

I would absolutely add WREK from Georgia Tech and WUOG from the University of Georgia. With the music scene in Atlanta and Athens, respectively, there’s some great shit on both of those.

we’re u around for WRAS from Georgia St? Best radio in the state by far but sadly it’s gone.

Added WUOG!

Go Dawgs!

If you're in the Los Angeles area. KSPC 88.7FM Claremont station is dope. https://kspc.org/

Just added it to the app, so cool that they work with all the Claremont colleges!

They have their own app that i use regularly. Check it out.

You should add Michigan State's WDBM 88.9 the Impact, listened to that station all the time when I worked in the area, always playing new stuff: https://impact89fm.org/

88.9 WDBM East Lansing. Best playlist/rotation I've ever experienced. Going strong for a very long time

WREK out of Atlanta needs to be added!

KLSU...Baton Rouge...https://www.lsureveille.com/klsu/

KDVS out of Davis, Ca. Also KALX Berkeley, & KPOO SF

KDVS made me who I am today

I started listening to independent stations in the Bay Area in the 90’s and can’t stand commercial radio anymore. I moved to Davis around 2003 and found KDVS soon after. I work alone in a shop and have had it mostly on for 7 or so hours a day plus car drives and around the house sometimes nights & weekends. The craziest thing is that I have hardly EVER heard the same song more than once in all that time. It’s kind of ridiculous.

I had a show on and off in the latter 00s - perhaps you even listened! We had a soft directive to only play music that you wouldn't hear on any other radio stations.

At the physical station we also had access to 'the stacks' - said to be the 2nd largest record collection on the west coast (only after the private collection of Dr Demento). I would lose entire days down there digging deep into genres and styles id never heard of, let alone the myriad obscure, local, forgotten, or even anonymous artists and labels. Such cultural wealth and musical treasure!

On top of all that musical exposure, the confidence gained from DJ experience was life changing. There was also the community, which exposed young me to friendships with people of all ages from so many walks of life! Friends I still have, now all over the world. And the work I did to create fliers, book and manage shows, record and edit audio, grow networks, preserve and archive music, digital graphic design, fundraising, audio engineering, stage and prop construction, etc etc etc taught me so many skills that I still use professionally to this day.

I could go on forever, but I won't. Suffice to say I'm a huge supporter of community / college radio and the general good it brings into the world whether you listen or not.

If you're adding stations, here's Penn State:

Hey! I'm listening to George Knight right now!

Gotta add the Emerson Radio Station WERS 88.9 fm

Edit: I was half asleep when I made the initial comment

my dude, 88.9 is different everywhere. call letters or website might help :)

Oooh, immediately saved! Great idea. Can't wait to try this.

Nice. Thanks. Hey, I couldn't find a way to STOP playing. Clicking the green on/off button doesn't seem to do anything. (I eventually got it to stop by reloading the page.) I'm sure you can fix that.

Thanks for the feedback! You can make it stop by clicking the green highlighted station (currently playing). Seems like that's not totally intuitive so I'll think about a better solution!

May i suggest WMEB, the station out of University of Maine-Orono? It's a delight. https://spinitron.com/WMEB/

Here is the world famous (no kidding) KXLU from LMU in Los Angeles.

I've listened to a ton of college radio over the years, and kxlu is right at the top of my list!

Just added to the app!

Thanks for this. I've barely listened since I graduated. Took a look at the schedule; where the fuck are the younglings?! Way too much automation. Glad Dr. S still has a show.

this is fun! i love college radio. thank you!

Chapel hill’s host is nailing it right now. Exactly the kind of stuff I love to hear on college radio. Love the site.

This is great! So they mention the name of the songs or can the website detect what's playing?

Wow an actual great idea. And implemented too. Congratulations this is popping! This sounds like an idea someone would come up with high but never actually follow through with

I am seeing a lot of people posting various stations, but I think this list of college radio stations from an unfortunately dead sub could be just as useful.

Great resource, thanks for linking!

[deleted]

Maybe... there are a couple of sites that aggregate the streaming links, but I've been manually selecting images and metadata. I love the weirdness and independent spirit of college radio, so I've limited the scope to just those stations so far.

[deleted]

Lmk if there are any college stations you'd want to see on there! Thinking about adding a bunch of international ones soon.

[deleted]

It's college radio. The transmitter doesn't go that far like other radio stations. These stations are more or less freeform radio for students and beyond.

I highly recommend checking out WMFU (New Jersey) and CHRP (Chirp Radio out of Chicago). These are community radio stations (not college radio) and are absolutely excellent.

I'll speak specifically for the one my university ran, KVRX. We operated on a "none of the hits, all of the time," mantra, since the other big time radio stations had the town covered as far as the hits were concerned. It was a place for students and music aficionados to get practice with broadcast equipment, dip their toes in the music industry, and even network with up and coming bands when they'd come in for live shows or interviews. Plus, it was also just a fun extracurricular activity and club that anyone could sign up for, regardless of their major. And since it was run largely without advertising dollars and as an experience by the University for the students to experience, you'd get way more personality and variety from the DJs than you would with a traditional, big-time radio station. You could have a video game talk show one hour, followed by an hour of movie OSTs, then a news show, then an hour of vaporwave.

They are typically low power FM stations that also now stream online. Listen to them. Try different ones but know that you will get something completely different depending on the DJ. They are freeform, meaning the DJs, typically student/community volunteers play whatever they want during their shows. Also, commercial free!

This is really great, thanks! Would be super cool to see what song is currently playing, guess that'd be harder to implement...

Yeah, I looked into it and there are a couple of paid APIs that do real time music IDs!

Would be a cool feature to add, though I'm not sure if it'd be cost effective. Nice thing about these college stations is that a lot of the DJs read the tracklist every \~10 minutes haha

Very cool app! Though I'm surprised the sites don't transmit this information in some way considering cars can display track information that's emitted by an fm radio station along with the audio

I used to host a internet radio and I remember being able to use id3 metadata that the stream has and display it on the website. I figure some of these stations might be providing that data in their streams. You might look into that as well. Beautiful website!

Don't forget us Canadians. https://www.1069thex.com/

It's so bad...

It's not always fun to listen to the undergrad DJ at a local college who insists on believing he's a black Jamaican and talks over the songs on the Sunday night reggae show!

Yep, I'm gonna work on this today!

So cool to see all the station recs on this thread, AND adding them is gonna be tricky for bandwidth, especially on mobile devices, where there are a bunch of restrictions on loading stream data.

I'll figure something out, but it's really helpful to hear that you wouldn't mind a couple seconds of buffer time. Thanks for the feedback!

Would love to see KCSU, 90.5. Colorado State. Where I got my start. Awesome website!!

I'm only seeing 10 stations? wikipedia lists just over 400 stations... i don't expect them all to have streams but i'd think around half or more would (maybe all do?)

anyways, unless it's loading wrong for me, this leaves a lot to be desired

i dunno if everyone listing random stations helps, but id go for kuom and wfuv

also a random button might be good if this gets to have hundreds of stations

Yep, I'm gonna work on adding more stations today. The tricky thing is limiting bandwidth and page size, especially on mobile devices.

Gonna need to think about how to add a "Play Random" button + maybe a search function while maintaining a clean design.

And also mobile devices enforce a bunch of bandwidth and security restrictions on stream data, so it starts getting laggy/inconsistent when you load and buffer too many stations.

As a user, do you think it'd be overly frustrating to click on the stations you want to play (rather than just click the top button to load them all)? That would make it a lot easier to offer more stations, but I need to find out if it's too much friction on the user experience.

You shouldn't start streaming a station until it's selected. Each of these stations should be implemented as an object that contains minimal information.

Selecting a station should initiate a call to the back end to retrieve the streaming information, then use that information to buffer and stream a singe station at a time.

You could also ship the call to the backend and populate the streaming url in the display card object. But you should only ever have one stream going at one time

Edit: I should also say that it's a great start and I like the idea! Some of my favorite bands I've found from college radio

honestly i don't understand what that load all button does, thr site seems to work the same way whether or not i press it. your question makes no sense to me, don't you just click on what station you want to hear? i don't understand the alternative.

also, are you having all stations playing at the same time in the background until one is chosen? that seems like a horrible idea

Yeah, so a lot of mobile devices won't automatically load audio streams (this was important when mobile data was more expensive/limited). So I had to add a way for users to opt into loading the stations, otherwise the streams would never show up.

The way I have it set up right now, the site tries to load a buffer for all ten stations so you can switch stations instantaneously. That approach works fine with 10 stations, but it would get pretty slow if I had like \~100 on here.

So basically there's a tradeoff—if I want to add a ton more options, I'll have to make it so users have to click a station and wait a couple seconds before it's ready to play.

having the streams load instantly is cool but not really necessary, i think there should be a way that only the 1 you choose is loaded (even if there's a delay), it seems like you're saying there is a way for it to act that way, but i wasn't able to get that to happen, also im on a slow connection so it takes awhile for all the streams to load, frankly im amazed they seem to eventually all light up. but when a station isn't lit up, you can't click on it to manually buffer it? that doesn't seem right

as a solution to not buffering 100 stations (besides also having an option to load 1 at a time), maybe you could have an option to change which are the buffered stations, like presets on a car radio

another cool thing would be a scan forward and back button (like on a car radio) it might be cool if this was organized by frequency, but a lot of stations share frequencies so that may not make any sense, but if you're just cycling thru 10 stations it'd make sense)

I just checked out the University of Virginia stream, and the hosts were wondering why they had their usual listeners and then random ones from Amsterdam and Prague

That's so cool!

If you're OK with including Canada, CJIQ is basically the only radio station around me I'll listen to.

Good alternative mix and good variety. And obviously a splash of CanCon.

WPRB from Princeton is pretty good. Also, hasn't technically been a college station since 1995, but WFMU is a mainstay of freeform radio and I highly recommend it.

WPKN

no longer U of Bridgeport, "listener supported community" station

Maybe add Wiley Radio at Purdue! https://wileyradio.org

very cool, my Slovakian ass loves it

Gotta toss a shout out to include my old station at University of Oregon - KWVA Eugene 88.1

This is excellent stuff

UW-Stevens Point has a decent station in 89.9 WWSP ā€œ90FMā€ Student operated and university owned of course. It’s also the radio station for the yearly trivia contest in April which draws 12,000+ visitors to the small school annually.

I wish something like this would have been available in the mid 90s. This would have been so awesome to have as another outlet for people (like our friends or family) to hear a show. Me and my best friend did a 3 hour show twice a week for three semesters, and as far as we knew we had one of the biggest listener bases on campus, which was probably about 10 people (the station was only about 10 watts), and that included an old lady who sat on the college's board of trustees who took it upon herself to listen to almost every show to make sure no one was playing songs with cussing or talking "inappropriately".

As a former college radio station music director and general manager, THANK YOU for this!!!! College radio is still alive and kickin’.

What about Jazz radio stations?

This is great. Well done!

You should add KXLU from Los Angeles

Just missing an option to control the volume and like others have mentioned, if there was an app it'd be freaking amazing, that way I could listen while going to and from work :D

Fuckin Awesome

Question.... The grayed out, non-clicky stations at the bottom of the list ... Are they ones that happen to be offline / not broadcasting ATM & will be playable again as soon as they resume broadcasting? Or are they ones your working on adding or ??

Are you using Chrome on desktop? I've found an issue where that browser only allows 10-12 streams to load at once, typically the first ones in the queue. But the streams all load fine on Chrome mobile + Safari mobile/desktop. Still trying to figure out why this is the case, and if other platforms are affected—lmk if you're not using Chrome!

I've gotten the links and card info for 50+ stations, but some of the streams are unreliable, and it gets pretty cluttered to display all the cards. And then there's the Chrome throttling issue when you exceed the 10-12 limit.

Right now I'm working on a feature that lets users choose and load only the stations they want to see (or a random mix of available stations). I think that'll help with the Chrome issue, and also make it a little less overwhelming to scroll through stations on mobile.

I did initially pull it up via Chrome on my Pixelbook (so essentially yeah, desktop Chrome).... I just pulled it up on both Chrome & Opera on my phone & they both have some grayed out 'channels'....

Interestingly, on Opera, they're not all the same shade - there are some that are more washed out than others.

On Opera, the first 10 (WXCY - KFJC if they're in a specific order) load fine. Then WVFS - KWVA are grayed out. WUVT is play-able, but WHUS, KMNR and WRPI aren't. They're also a bit darker but still not clicky. KZUU is, and then KSPC isn't.

Same on Chrome, except instead of KZUU I can listen ot KMNR instead. And the unplayable ones all appear to be the same shade of grey.

okay so i’m a dj at one of these stations and i wanna thank this thread for increasing my webstream listenership by 450% 🤩🤪😌

Let's goooo!

If you're still looking for more to add: Iowa State University broadcasts KURE from the basement of a residence hall.

Yep, just added this to the list! I just pushed a big update to the app, planning to add a bunch of stations tomorrow.
