Nice work my dude. Would be great to have the option of turning of 'nudges' against certain targets, at key times. Looks great though - good work. I'd pay for this

The app doesn't "nudge" on events just yet, but I am planning to add a weekly digest / summary feature. User configurable nudges might follow soon .. Would love to pick your brain some time in the future with this feature.

Hope you're optimizing for mobile! Android as well as iPhone, please.

i hope this is satire…

If this isn’t satire then we truly are living in a Black Mirror Episode.

you already sound like a machine. hope you enjoy your super-productive-and-efficient life.

You should check out their history... Yikes

you know, so he can accelerate his personality.

Great! Nice suggestions in the demo too! I’m looking for something like this to encourage somebody to quit smoking. Is there a way to login with a u/p instead of google?

I'm planning on "login with email" .. Coming very soon! Or happy to hear about alternatives as well.

Feel free to follow me https://twitter.com/bytebeacon for updates as I make the alternative login available.

I am also interested in this. I'd like to start using it once that's available!

Maybe login with github and export data to a repo (no idea how much work it would take)?

Definitely a way to log in without Google would be positive. Looking forward to following the development of this. I can see lots of potential. 👍🏽

Is there a way to use it without logging in at all?? As soon as I see I need to log in, that's when I delete the app

Exactly, needing to login is the main reason I don't use several, otherwise good apps

I use the login to create the user entity to which everything is tied within the system. I could theoretically create the user entity without needing your google login and share the created obfuscated user ID with you. You'll need to keep the ID safe yourself though (more bookkeeping on your side). There area a few other approaches as well, but they all have their pros / cons to think through (scoping based on device or just saving state on device but you risk losing state / history and analytics won't work etc ).

I'll add this in my work item list and see if I can come up with something decent. I'll try and report back here but feel free to follow https://twitter.com/bytebeacon for updates on it.

Dude this is a seriously great idea, and a sweet implementation, especially for a preview like this. It would probably benefit from a glow-up branding and UX wise at some point in the future, but I'm with the other guy who said they'd pay for it.

Send nudges to my fitbit please.

This is awesome. I’m going to use this. Do you use your tracker for your own personal goals?

One tiny bit of user feedback: On portrait mode the icons on the bottom are off centered to the left. (Mobile, iOS, safari)

Absolutely! I track things like learning guitar (1 youtube lesson / week), being healthy (3 runs a week, 3 carb free meals / week, measure my weight once / week) .. 1 yt lesson / day on a random topic .. changing important logins yearly .. cards payments every month .. Investing a small amount in SCHD (my fav ETF) every month (financial hygiene). I don't hit all targets everytime .. but directionaly seems correct.

re Icon: I think I chose to keep it left as centered looked a bit odd to me (icons weren't lining up properly). I'll try it out again and see if I can push a change out soon.

Thanks for the in-depth reply. How do you go about finding a random topic to learn about?

It's sort of on my interest in that moment. I had a phase where I was getting serious about investing .. so made sure I watched investing videos .. that lead me to dividend / etfs / derivetives market etc .. Then I had a phase of understanding more on taxes .. Then a phase of "clean cooking" / nutrition. There were many courses freely available on youtube as well that I saved on my list .. and decided to watch at my schedule. Once I started tracking the videos .. things just somehow aligned.

I don't have a 100% success rate on this .. but whatever I log is a win :)

Side note: You know carbs are not evil right? :) Looks like a good app! Will try it out

You know diet is not a one size fits all solution right?

Have any plans to make an open source version that could be used for self hosting?

There's a lot of potential valuable data that you'll acquire with an app like this if it gets popular that marketers will eventually want. Stay honest :)

Haven't really thought about OSS yet. The app is currently a PWA and I'm learning more about them as I built this out (I'm new to PWAs myself). Although its not doing it now, I think a future version should be able to resolve people's data concerns as the tool will only save data on the user's device (It would limit the sync capabilities of the tool as well).

Regarding staying honest .. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how I hope to get support for this tool.

https://github.com/iSoron/uhabits if you want an open source version. I'm unaffiliated, just don't like seeing people reinventing the wheel but also taking data at the same time

Hmmm, I'd want a version that can sync across mobile and web, that seems to be mobile only.

This reminds me of a bit from Demetri Martin about making a checklist for life and scoring the tallies. I'll have to check it out, my ADD makes it difficult to follow to-do lists

What is different to any other habit app? I can't try them all.

Sorry but how can I log in?

Currently I only have google login support. So you'll have to use your gmail login. I'm trying to get a generic "Login with email" flow out so gmail dependency is gone. If you're not seeing a red "Login with google" button that means you're either in incognito mode or have a plugin blocking google flow.

Thanks. I had privacy badger on

Do you have any idea how to fix this problem on an Android phone?

Do you not see the login button? It should be one of the issues I mentioned above. I'll try and get the "login with email" button out soon, but it might take a bit. The response here has been way way above my expectation and I'll try and prioritize this change in soon.

Yeah, no login button indeed. But I cant find a setting on my device which is blocking these privacy/third party settings. It's working fine on my pc though.

But I'll be keeping an eye on it when a different way of logging in appears, the app looks amazing!

Reminds me of daylio

Right here to help you with UI and UX if needed let me know this is cooool

FYI for those interested in the concept, there's already a great no-frills open source app https://github.com/iSoron/uhabits available that works offline so it won't take your data. I don't see anything ByteBeacon does that Loop Habit Tracker doesn't do better.

Like Outlook?

I would like it to identify patterns. When I arrive at a place. It could ask why I'm there and if I'm going to be there regularly.

I love this! I have adhd and long-term thinking/planning/tracking can be difficult at best, detrimental at worst, even when it comes to seemingly menial things.

I’m using the browser version but would love to use the app as well when it launches :)

The app is built as a PWA (Progressive Web App) .. If you visit the site from your phone you should see a "Install on home screen" banner that allows you to place an icon on your phone and use it like an app.

Copied from my response below. You should be able to use it like a mobile app right now.

First off, I love this! I’ve wanted something exactly like this for a while and thought it would be really cool to make but I have no programming/coding experience.

Any plans to make this into a downloadable app? I’d love to have it as a widget on my phone.

Thank you for the kind words!

re Widget on phone: The app is built as a PWA (Progressive Web App) .. If you visit the site from your phone you should see a "Install on home screen" banner that allows you to place an icon on your phone and use it like an app.

Awesome! I’ll give it a try!

This is so cool! Adulting is soooo Fucken hard, adding reaccuring shit in diary just does not quite work and a to do list just does not hit th spot and at first glance this is what’s been missing from my life! Mate, well done Fucken awesomeness!!!

I have adhd and sooooooo many times see people ask for help here, I always open it and look who uses what and looking for a bit more, and I’ve tried them all but this is special, well done, I just selected the support page and it said Page not found, everyone is struggling but this is special and I would like to show gratitude!

Is this available for android?

Yes. You can visit bytetrack-app.bytebeacon.com/ from your mobile web browser and a banner should appear that should allow you to add an icon to your phone. That way you can use it just like a mobile app!

This style of app is called a PWA (Progressive Web App).

I need an app/device that basically yells at me to update it with whatever it needs.

“Hey asshole, how do you feel today?”

“Shit bag, don’t forget to workout this morning”

Can we please have that?

Something gritty and motivating like Mr. T’s voice.

That logo is killer.

Have you consulted with a designer on the UI?

No. I'm the designer with lots of support and feedback gathered from community/users. I'm building this in my spare time. My core strength is in backend systems and I'm sure a pro UX/UI person can elevate the design here. Unfortunately I can't pay a good UX/UI salary (I rather keep the tool free for as long as I can) so just learning basic skill myself .. #indiedevlife :)

Do you have budget? Would be happy to work with you on this

I bet r/productivity would love this also. If you got this optimized for mobile and had push notifications that I could set with my own reminders (like a motivating quote or reminder of why I am setting the new habit/goal) I would pay money for this. Nicely done.

I see a snus task and I have to upvote. App looks great, certainly something I would use. I know I inadvertently have a thousand little hacks that I use but nothing consolidated into one spot…it makes total sense.

Are you looking for dev collaboration?

Awesome. I’m interested in the rubric/self-evaluation space with some Ed-tech crossover. Not a developer. I’m an educator. But I’d love to collaborate.

Fantastic! Would love to hear your ideas on collaboration here. I've had a few conversations with performance / productivity coaches and profile managers who have mentioned interest. Would love to hear your perspective as well. Feel free to DM me to continue conversation or connect though social media channels.

Sounds amazing!! Looks like a good addition to Best Habit Tracker Apps list.

The UI looks great and your ideas with future updates sounds cool too!! Can’t wait to have a hands on experience with it.

All the best 👍🏻

Nice

Why might someone want a web app for this over a native tool like Loop Habit Tracker?

This is like something I have wanted to build in a game for daily stuff checks, but I'm not savvy enough yet for it

Looks great do you have a mailing list? Too early for me right now but I would like updates

I don't mean to be rude, but isn't this sort of feature pretty easily found on Appstore/Playstore? Or is there some innovation here that I'm missing?

Also an OCD reinforcer ..

I am developing web app that help us make habits successfully too.
