Sure look good.

I wonder who was working in those offices when this moment was immortalized in film( preferably Kodak )?

What were they doing?

Xeroxing files? Answering faxes? Typing up the reports, on the IBM with SVGA screens??

What glory is the work product of that time….

these kind of photos really trip me up imagining these nameless peoples lives, where are they now? what are they doing?

You and the og comment would like the word sonder. Its the realization that every little office light and such is connected to a life just as complex as your own with its own problems and dreams etc. Prolly a sub for it

Comment is perfection for t h i s m o p d

Still at work at dusk in NYC in the 80's? Probably thinking about all the partying they're missing out by doing overtime. Then again, they could've always brought the "party" to the office, since management had already left, lol.

Many were taking poops

Eating dinner at the big fancy restaurant on the top floor.,

Now THIS is vaporwave

I swear you couldn't even recreate this with all the tech if you tried, it's too authentic

I can't stop looking at it

Jus imagine how busy the life would be, at that time before everything happened

I can't recall the name but there is a PBS documentary about the NYC blackout in 1977. It's a really great look at life in NYC then. A small portion talks to people who were dining in the WTC that night when the power went out.

This photo hit me so deep in the nostalgia that I need a cigarette. The colors, the fuzz, the longing for a time that I didn’t personally experience… perfect. 🤌

I need to smell the cigarettes, hear the car honks, feel the suns stored heat, radiating from the building into me…bliss

I had the same nostalgic feeling but I was lucky enough to be in NY in the 80s. Visiting I mean. Going on the roof of one of those towers as a kid.

I didn't go to the roof, but I went to the top floor in the late 90s. When we were walking into the buildings, my dad (who often expressed really obscure and often morbid thoughts) said:

"You know, if these buildings ever fell over, it would be the greatest tragedy in American history"

I guess it wasn't exactly prophetic, but rather pretty obvious...but it wasn't a thing a 12 year old kid wants to hear before going inside them!

Your dad lol.

I bet the thought was planted in the early 90s when some other terrorists bombed the place and if I'm not mistaken, almost took one of them down. It's a morbid thought, but if they were going to fall...the way they fell (directly down) was best case scenario.

We visited in '92, oddly enough.

But yes, I agree, their straight down collapse saved a lot of collateral destruction. I was pretty invested in the 9/11 conspiracies early on and how they resembled a "controlled demolition". I thankfully outgrew it. It was clear they fell that way because that's the job of gravity. And, they didn't fall perfectly straight down. The latest high resolution footage clearly shows the South Tower rotated a bit, then tipped to the side, and fell at an angle (UA175 hit the building at a steep angle).

Fortunately they were designed to pancake, and they did. A miracle of engineering.

wow that must have been so cool

I was like a 8 year old and if I recall I was crying because I thought I was going to fall off lol.

But once I got up there and saw the fences I was cool. I remember the 2 buildings were swaying back and forth a bit...that was a trip.

They actually sway a decent amount and you can see/feel it when you're on the top floors. Apparently it was a design feature, to keep them stable (seems counterintuitive, I know).

To stand rigid through the strongest winds like the mighty oak often leaves one uprooted and on the ground. Better to sway with the breeze like grass, just enough bend to not break.

Very nice. I had to look it up...it's a quote from Confucius:

The green reed which bends in the wind is stronger than the mighty oak which breaks in a storm.“ - Confucius.

I knew I was misremembering someone else’s quote! Never knew it was Confucius though. Thanks for enlightening me!

Thanks for enlightening me!

I see what you did there.

Lol entirely unintentional but maybe I’m making subconscious puns again.

21st Anniversary.

Yea, and this photo would be more like 40 years

The kids born in the US on the day of are old enough to drink today. That’s been breaking my brain for nearly a month now.

I was a fetus that day and I’m a junior in college now

Crisp so clean.

Never forget

Never forgive

Literally came down on live television, what are you talking about?

Allusions to conspiracy theory, I think.

Oh, we know.

I love this narrative of “did you know a THIRD building fell on 9/11?” Like, yes, I do. I watched it happen on live tv along with millions of other people. 2 100-story skyscrapers fell on it. It had a 14-story hole in its south face and burned for 8 hours with no sprinklers. The FDNY pulled the rescue operation in the middle of the day over concerns of imminent collapse. WTC 4, 5 and 6 were destroyed as well. Stop already.

Look at all the smog in the air.

Fricking wow awesome sub. Never would have found that on my own

Retro felt so much nostalgic for the first time.

what an awesome photo, RIP

Great picture, I ate at the Windows on the World restaurant at the top of twin towers back in the 80s

We view this picture from 21 years before 9/11, 21 years after 9/11.

[insert saxophone solo]

Bwanananana nananaaaaa...

Rip

Aw yeah that's the stuff

The world just isn't the same after 9/11

yeah, imagine if americans hadn’t used that as an excuse to invade, destabilise and occupy countries they had no right to be in

Not only that, but the whole western world is less free and less optimistic after 9/11.

Which album?

[deleted]

Such a good album. There’s another set I really dig, The Disintegration Loops. I don’t know if you’ve heard any of it, that link is just the first part. It’s long and melancholy but really beautiful.

When I saw this immediately thought of the theme song for the TV show Moonlighting. The theme song, also called Moonlighting, was sung by Al Jarreau. If you like this picture you should take a look at the opening credits which feature the song I mentioned.

If you haven't seen the show, and you follow the sub then you probably should check it out! It starred Cybil Shepherd and Bruce Willis. It was famous for breaking the fourth wall, the theatrical musical aspects of the show, interesting and unique dialogue for the time, and the sexual tension between the characters Dave and Maddie. At least one whole show was basically a remake of Shakespeare's taming of the shrew.

Is there a higher res version of this? I love it

The good years 😍

“The completion of the recording coincided with the 9/11 attacks, which Basinski witnessed from his rooftop in Brooklyn; the artwork features Basinski's footage of the New York City skyline in the aftermath of the World Trade Center's collapse. He dedicated the music to the victims of the attacks.”

I went to the top of one of those in 1999. Oddly enough, it was the same day the Columbine shooting occurred. I watched the live feed from my hotel room in Manhattan, mere blocks away from the towers.

I’ve always loved the green hue of city lights in movies/pics from the 70’s and 80’s. Whatever bulbs those were are badass.

Dude really had to post this on 9/11

Everything ok 'till the planes came.

I mean, at 21 years later, is this the point where crass jokes become funny? You do realize what day today is, right?

Is that a disrespectful joke though? I think everyone agrees 9/11 was the shifting point of America.

the shifting point of afghanistan, maybe

but hey, at least you guys won tha- oh wait

Did you reply to the wrong comment?

They were badass

Hehehe

happy the first mcr lyric was “you’re not in this alone” day

It’s just so weird how these pictures that immortalize the twin towers were at a point just an insignificant memory of a family vacation.

I’ve taken photos inside an abandoned building before it was demolished but it doesn’t feel the same as taking a boring but clean photo that becomes an important part in preserving a place now gone.

nice tower, it would be a shame if something were to happen to it

oh neat, another nice tower, it would be a shame if something were to happen to it too

This, THIS right here has a special place in my heart. No fancy edits, no special effects, just retro photographs of metropolitan areas. The simplicity and look just hits different

there was always something about these towers that realy struck a cord with me in an architectural way. there just so elegant and just so minimal that even in this day and age they would still look good. but in the 80's these towers were to most popular/tallest towers in the entire world. before the towers were gone i feel as thoe that newyork was a completely different city back then in the 1980s and 1990s
