The debate on when the dark ages really started is still a bit muddy. there were great discoveries in the dark ages, but at the same time not very many so it throws a fat amount of people off to what actually is the starting date of the dark ages because there was of course, great discoveries in a time to be considered having no impacting discoveries.
Edit: the most common date is the fall of the Roman Empire, to the start of the renaissance.
I mean as far as I know from profesionals I had the chance to talk to or just read their stuff dark ages just literally mean 'We don't have written sources'. Like that's it, that's the modern definition as far as I know.
It has 0 to do with how much has been discovered or how much progress has been made.

The only one that you can call an Arab empire is the Umayyads
