Framing shots is IMO Anno's biggest strength as a director.
Framing shots is IMO Anno's biggest strength as a director.
His editing is also top teir
Anno’s educational background in film REALLY shows through in just about every sequence and its influence cannot be overstated. It’s beautiful, well-composed and severe in a way that really no other anime really touched beforehand. Sure, Akira, Ghost in the Shell and some Miyazaki films had great cinematic qualities, but the slow, realistic pans and shots are Eva’s hallmark. The way the entire show is organized visually is clearly the consequence of a man who has sensibilities deep in the realm of ‘real’ filmmaking versus someone who strictly has worked with animation.
Well said!
Don’t forget how resonating it is when he juxtaposes those slow pans with hyper quick jump cuts
This is the part of the show that's always stood out to me most. It's truly directed and animated so well
That's part of the reason why this anime aged so incredibly well, of course the 90s cel animation aesthetic and the timeless OST by Shiro Sagisu are also still incredible to this day.
the 90's scifi interfaces and head-up displays are also very charming and memorable
best visuals I have ever seen
shows that Misato Katsuragi's postcard
Beautiful, divine, exquisite.
Definitely one of the most beautifully crafted shows ever created.
All of these shots are gorgeous but the first one with the Eva silhouetted by the sun has got to be one of the coolest shots I’ve ever seen
The inclusion of the Jet Alone reactor rods is appreciated, underrated part of the show imo
I love that it Shows us how much Seele and Nerve would go to just get the upper hand
When the Eva is Gelion
I always wished the original team that made the animation had bigger budget. Wanted to see what epic stuff that can fit into such a legendary anime.
…Villeneuve could do it.
That would be an epic live action, with an actual chance of actually being good.
Him and Roger did amazing job with the directing and the cinematography of Blade Runner 2049 one of the best visuals I have seen in cinema
Oh my. I never thought of this, but holy shit I need this NOW
RemindMe! December 31, 2028
He’s the only one who could ever made it close to good at all
fr it looks so good consistently
Yup... there's a reason it was so iconic, even when all it had was a shoestring budget.
Even the last episode was pretty stunning in its own very odd way.
The last two episodes are great in every aspect, I don't know why do they have such a low rating
90s anime in a nutshell
Cowboy bebop, Trigun, blue gender, akira, GITS, etc
Cowboy Bebop has also a great visuals especially that shot in the church with Vicious I love that scene
It’s gorgeous, the visuals were also heavily inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey which I recommend checking out if you want more of that
2001 is the greatest Sci-fi movie I have seen and also the cinematography is great
anno has this obsession about angles, apparently
The really do have some of the most visually striking scenes. Plays well with the extreme contrast in the characters.
Cinematography 👌
You are some of the best visuals I've ever seen 😊
Nice art
One of the classiest color palettes in anime.

Another one of my faves
Agreed I got a few of these scenes photo printed , I love it. https://www.reddit.com/r/evangelion/comments/x07e0k/working_on_a_small_project_so_had_to_get_a_bunch/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Looks beautiful, I may consider to try to do it with some shots
The goddamn Kaworu hold was one of the defining moments in my life regarding entertainment. It was like emotional edging. It was horrible and beautiful. I had no idea what I wanted from the scene but I got it. Dead action forces you to internalize the scene and Eva does it at least 3 times but this is the most exaggerated and most deserved.
If you want more "that cool stuff", try watching "Sonny Boy", it's as good as Evangelion, believe me.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely put it on my watch list
Definitely does for the time. The first rebuild movie is mostly the same scenes but with fixed lightings.
to be honest i loved the rebuild but for me always liked the old art style more the the new one, especially that shot with the sun behind the eva as it was more terrifying
Same. Also I’m pretty sure that dull colors were actually an art style at the time.
You forgot the one with asuka in the hospital
One… or SOME
Agreed!
I have only watched the series once, but I do remember thinking more than once that I could mute the volume and turn off sub titles and still be just as hooked to the screen.
I haven’t watched the rebuilds yet, but the OG series is peak 90s animation, in my opinion.
Is this a "guess which one" post?
The visuals are litterally the reason I first watched this show.
Boys. Eva is a JoJo reference
And I still have friends from my filmmaking world that believes anime is only for kids :v
Not on here, but the shot of the three pilots in the lift silhouetted against their Evas in Ep12 is my personal favourite
Yep. Agreed %100
That scene before Kaworou gets crushed, with the song playing all that long time, it is just amazing! It builds up a lot of tension!
And this is just the show too, say what you want about the Rebuilds, but man they are beautiful.
I think the most visually stunning sequence Anno has ever made for an Eva project is "This is the dream" from Thrice upon a time. The color pallet, art direction and score are a chef's kiss.
Keep in mind that Gainax had approximately only $60,000 of a bugdet per episode
Recently got into eva all i can say is i love it and this is also why some scenes were definetly and inspiration for AOT later
Of all these scenes, the one I'm not recognizing just had to be the neon green ringlight one. Is is a blink and you'll miss it thing, or just lost among other interesting plot points?
Its Jet Alone episode after misato deactivated the robot
very neon
and alot of genesis
And there's also quite an amount of evangelion in there
Of both the soft and hard G variety.
Mildly Evangelion (j said that cos of r/mildlyevangelion)
