That's a matter of personal perspective. Besides most people who are afraid of this robot saw him in childhood. And children can be scared by many things that adults do not find scary.

Soviet children weren't familiar with post 19th century technology. As such the image of something as advanced as a robot (even an animated one) terrified them beyond belief. It's like cthulu or Amy Schumers vagina.

You are talking like soviet children were some sort of neantherdals.

I'm pretty sure he's joking about Soviet living conditions (and maybe some of our heightened ideas of some of those conditions) through gross exaggeration, not by actually trying to state a fact that Soviet kids didn't know what a robot was-- I'm sure he understands that they did in fact know what a robot is.

I wish Invader Zim had gotten to be the adult cartoon it was intended to be. Probably would've been good. Never watched it myself but I hear such good things about the kid version and that the creator was majorly restricted so if the writer had been able to do whatever he wanted it probably would've been better.
