I remember watching that go down in 2016 before the election. Reddit was so different compared to now.
This has been going on for quite a while. It used to only happen when newsworthy shit was going on, but more recently it's been happening at random times for seemingly no reason at all.
My theory is that shills have now figured out a way to game the voting system on posts. (And when I say "shills" I mean an actual organization like Correct the Record) I think that reddit has a way to detect vote manipulation but it is based on the number of active users on a sub. So they flood the sub with thousands of bots that just idle so they can hide their vote manipulation. Like 10 upvotes a minute on a post might throw a flag if there are only 2,500 users on a sub, but if there are 10,000 it might not.

A 30% decrease of activity on a website over the course of an hour is not unheard of. A bit suspicious. Borderline. Could've been a lot of the European users going to bed. If it were over the course of a fraction of an hour, then I would find it quite suspicious, as 20 minutes does not make the difference between "time to post" and "time for bed" for a whole time zone of people at once.
