No shit

This is actually a technique devised by Russian state internet trolls https://stratcomcoe.org/cuploads/pfiles/full_report_trolling_25012016.pdf they use it against users more specifically though, attempting to draw them out to say something that would might trigger auto-mod/auto-bans regardless of context. Like a comment thread agent provocateur.

There are just as many Nazis/nationalists doing this shit as commies. Which is to say… a small minority of users but coordinated and with many active accounts being managed across every type of sub.

One common type post in one “normie” sub like a game sub, nfl, sports, etc, to pepper their history’s it’s organic looking activity, and then in default subs with lots of “as a _____ person” troll comments. “As a black lesbian Republican” etc…

The last link is a Department of Defense funded study identifying and characterizing shills on Reddit.

It’s been happening for years. Also, any anti woke sub that attracts enough attention gets invaded by them. I’ve come across a lot of them, and they use a lot of Reddit tricks to try and piss people off. Sometimes they will anonymously report you as being suicidal even if you’ve said nothing suicidal and you will get a private message from a Reddit suicide prevention bot asking if you need help. Or they will mass report your comment if they don’t like it and suddenly you can no longer reply to any of them in that topic, but they can keep replying to you with insults, etc.

Right now the Rogan sub is undergoing a massive propaganda blitz. I’m seeing a lot of old accounts that used to troll the IDW and Sam Harris subs a couple years ago and went dormant for a bit become ‘reactivated’ and they are starting to post on the Rogan sub. Always the same narrative.

I’m running an experiment now by just blocking them to see how the sub is after that. I don’t have many people blocked, it’s like two dozen and for example the Rogan sub seems a lot more normal. I also block accounts that I think are associated with the alt-right. They have specific characteristics too but they are few and far between. Most accounts have the same characteristics. All or nearly all of their comments are insults, arguing in bad faith, trolling etc. in subs linked to people or groups that they clearly hate. Literally no normal person spends all of their time on Reddit engaging in that much negativity. They are either bots or shills.

Thank you for these links. I'll read them later. I believe that reddit also took money from Tencent, a Chinese company. they received at least 150 million and I'm not really sure why. I did not see this in your link headlines so I thought I'd let you know if you didn't know. Once again thanks.
