Oldboy (2003)
Everyone who's watched Parasite always asks me if there's any other good Korean movies, and that's usually my top recommendation. It's kinda fucked up tho, so watch at your discretion.

Anything by Bong Joon-Ho is great. Memories of a Murder and Mother are both phenomenal.
Oldboy is by Park Chan-Wook
Yeah was more piggybacking off of the commenter above's comment on Bong. Love me some Bong
Ah gotcha. Bong is the man i agree
If you liked old boy, I highly recommend I saw the devil
Very much an underrated movie. Love it!
meant to watch this movie forever ago but just didn’t for some reason, thank you 🙏
Funny enough, Spike Lee director of do the right thing did an American adaptation of Old Boy. It wasn't nearly as good as the original, but interesting connection of two things you may like merging.
yeahh i saw that, pretty crazy that a director like spike lee was in charge of a korean film adaptation feels very random
Also in the vein of Korean thrillers you might like Burning from 2018. Lee Chang-dong also directed Peppermint Candy which isn’t as much a thriller and isn’t at all action, but is similar to Oldboy in dealing with a man’s trauma and psychological descent. But in this case the trauma is recent Korean history. It’s one of my favorite movies.
thank you 🙏
i just watched burning and adored it. so many beautiful scenes
I would personally recommend Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005) over Oldboy, it’s part of the same vengeance trilogy and imo it’s better. Also wayyyy easier to watch.
Sorry To Bother You. I never thought I'd triangulate Parasite and Do The Right Thing, but there it is, with a bit of Brazil thrown in for good measure.
sounds incredibly intriguing i gotta check it out
Fyi sorry to bother you has a pretty incredible opening and is amazing, then takes a really bizarre turn at the end. It was one of those awesome potential, bit didn't stick the landing I hoped it would..
The first time I watched it I wasn’t as impressed with the turn but the second time I quite appreciated it
im ok with bizarre turns, we’ll see what i think 🤷♂️
I never would've thought someone would beat me on that.. I was going to say that I like 5 out of 6 movies op listed and I absolutely love Brazil so I was going to recommend that...
Perfect Blue
literally meant to watch years ago but didn’t for some reason, thank you !!
Based on the bottom row. Paprika (Anime), Maniac (Netflix Series), Inception, Looper.
Yes Paprika time for a rewatch
thank you 🙏🙏
Seconding Maniac. Criminally underrated; hardly anyone I know has seen it and it’s so well done.
I thought Looper was possibly the worst movie I've ever seen. Could not have disliked it more. I won't spoil anything for OP but man, NOT a fan. I am surprised to find I'm generally alone in that regard, I'm not usually so quick to admonish a film.
Came to recommend paprika. Since it’s been said, this list is definitely lacking Akira
The anime movie paprika
been meaning to watch, thank you 🙏
Malcolm X
Rebels of The Neon God
Memories of Murder
12 Monkeys
Elephant Man
Rififi
thank you 🙏
Perfect list, I would add Children of Men and Brazil to this and then you’ve got yourself a great couple weeks of viewing
For Evangelion, I'd recommend the series Serial Experiments Lain. The greatest anime of all time imo and it's a pretty quick watch with only 13 episodes.
I second Serial Experiments Lain, and I'd add Akira, Brazil, and Primer
Primer and Brazil are definitely worth a watch.
lain has been on my watchlist for about a year now, thank you 🙏
In The Mood For Love
was actually thinking of watching this week, thank you 🙏
chungking express! the "prequel" to fallen angels. both being my favourite movies!
i have seen chungking express ! i love it, especially the first half which is one of my fav sections of a movie ever, ty for the rec anyways tho 🙏
yes me too! i absolutely loved the little references to chungking in fallen angels too, both such adorable films <3
yesss they definitely compliment each other very well
Synecdoche New York!
Amazing Phillip Seymour Hoffman performance RIP
will watch 🙏
Oh and check out “it’s such a beautiful day” trippy abstract animated movie haven’t watched it in years but it blew my young stoned mind
the plot of that movie sounds amazing i need to check it out, ty 🙏
By the guy who made this: https://youtu.be/W7JyjZI3LUM
classic i remember watching that short years ago
There are certain scenes in this movie that make me tear up just thinking about them.. So good
Swiss Army Man is the other movie written/directed/produced by The Daniels (who did Everything Everywhere All At Once). It is one of the strangest movies I’ve ever seen, but if you stick with it, you will find it has a real emotional punch along with the pure goofiness. Absolutely wonderful movie that I think of often.
when i saw everything everywhere all at once i heard about this film but haven’t watched it, thank you 🙏
Love to see people being grateful on Reddit!
Agreed! Crazy how many posts I see where people won’t interact hardly at all in the comments. Always nice to feel like you aren’t just screaming into the void 😂
yeah i’ve been a reddit lurker for years but just created an account yesterday and i always noticed that people would ask questions and then completely disappear when given answers and i didn’t want to be that guy..
Same here. I pretty much never post, but I genuinely appreciate when people take time to respond/discuss so I like to return the favor! Hope you enjoy the movies recommended!
Pretty crazy that something like 90% of Reddit users never comment or post anything.
If you enjoyed the juxtaposition of pure weirdness with the emotional notes from EEAAO, I think you will love it! The premise of the movie is beyond absurd. The Daniels said something along the lines of “we wanted the first fart to make you laugh, and the last fart make you cry,” and boy do they nail it!
Maybe Code Geass?
Monster by Naoki Urusawa
thank you 🙏
Synecdoche, New York (a similar existential mind-bender to Everything Everywhere All At
Once, though a little artsier)
this is the third time i’ve gotten this rec so i definitely gotta watch, thank you!
Definitely Oldboy, but you've probably seen that.
i have not yet actually, been on the watchlist for a while tho so thank you!
Donnie Darko, John Dies at the End, Deathtrap, The Wave (2019).
thank you !!
Based on Evangelion: Devilman Crybaby
thank you!!
I'm getting City of God (Cidade de Deus, 2002) vibes from the top row. Not sure why, but give it a go, fantastic film.
thank you 🙏
Such a great movie. Visually, historically... just so fantastic.
Snowpiercer
thank you 🙏
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, paris texas, rear window, vertigo, rebecca. and if you like those, mulholland drive
very comprehensive list, thank you 🙏
12 Angry Men - YML two people stuck in a room e.g. Sunset Limited or True West (with John Malkovoch and Lieutenant Dan). YML swimming to Cambodia a stream of consciousness monologue on film. Documentary Now made an excellent parody that could be watched after.
thank you very much!!
Tape with Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Wilson from House would fit well with that theme.
Lost in translation
thank you 🙏
They're all quite different lol.
Witness for the Prosecution (1957) is a classic and a must-watch for people who also enjoyed 12 Angry Men. Although it's more of a fun/entertaining watch.
fun watches are fine by me, thank you 🙏
Drive
my friends have told me to watch this before but i haven’t yet, thank you 🙏
It's iconic
Drive is the best movie in here except maybe City of God, imo
I’ve only seen 12 angry men out of those so if you haven’t seen it already I’d recommend to kill a mockingbird
thank you 🙏
Based on Parasite: Burning. It's another korean film that's psychological and it is fantastic.
Based on Evangelion: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. It will require you to watch the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya show first like evangelion but the movie is a fantastic mystery with so many turns and such a great ending.
i’ve briefly looked at both of these but haven’t checked them out yet, thank you 🙏
just watched burning and loved it ❤️❤️
Memories of murder
In the mood for love
American history X
Perfect blue
thank you 🙏 🙏🙏
Once Cut of the Dead (2019). It’s an ambitious zombie movie from Japan that is better left unspoiled.
thank you 🙏
Spike Lee vampire movie - Da Sweet Blood of Jesus
thank you 🙏
Memories of murder
the next bong joon-ho on my list, thank you 🙏
Chungking express, We need to talk about Kevin, Requiem for a dream, Annihilation, Irreversible
i’ve seen chungking express and loved it but haven’t seen the others, thank you 🙏
Perfect blue
need to watch that desperately, thank you 🙏
Checkout Stalker by Andrei Tarkvovksy. It's a slow one but I think it'll tick your boxes. And checkout La Hainé, quite possibly my favourite movie of all time.
i’ve actually been meaning to check both of those movies out forever (especially stalker) and i definitely will now!!
The Lighthouse
thank you 🙏
Tentatively id say The Truman Show. It’s lighter and a little less sophisticated than your picks but I think there is still a pretty similar existential vibe.
been meaning to watch for quite a while, thank you 🙏
Akira
i was supposed to watch it like a year ago then i just didn’t not sure why, thank you 🙏
Since Oldboy was already mentioned, I'll suggest I Saw the Devil.
thank you 🙏
Being John malkovich
saw this movie and it looked interesting, thank you 🙏
I would recommend "Sleuth" with Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier (not the one with Caine and Jude Law, I haven't seen it). And if you like that, "Deathtrap" starring Caine and Christopher Reeves.
Also, the movie "Sneakers" and "Spy Game", both with Robert Redford. No particular reason I just really like them, and also like several of the ones on your list.
thank you 🙏
Totally not based on your list at all I would suggest Mad Hot Ballroom. It's a documentary about different groups of public school kids in NYC that get to enter a ballroom dancing program/competition. One of the best pieces of reality media I've ever seen.
thank you 🙏
Do the right thing is such a classic, nge is great too
two of the best things i’ve ever seen definitely
Train To Busan
need to watch, thank you 🙏
If you're looking for something new but with similar vibes. Try films from Andrei Tarkovsky: Stalker, Solaris, Ivan's Childhood.
been meaning to check out tarkovsky for a bit now but haven’t gotten to him, thank you 🙏
I know this doesn't count as movies, but if you like Evangelion I suggest Parasyte and or serial experiments lain. The two give you that unsettling traumatic feeling, with a heartfelt and mentally unstable protagonist with intense trauma. I loved both of those, alongside Evangelion, so I hope this is a good suggestion.
been meaning to watch lain for forever but haven’t heard of parasyte thank you 🙏
Np, you can watch Parasyte and Lain on 9anime for free, only downside is there's lots of pop ups and ads.
The imaginarium of dr parnassus, vanilla sky, monty python and the holy grail?
i’ve seen monty python and loved it but haven’t seen the others, thank you 🙏
The best enemies. It’s super new, on netflix.
thank you 🙏
I think you’d like Paranoia Agent! 😊
i think i’ve heard of it but never checked it out, thank you 🙏
what happened to baby jane? with joan crawford and bette davis
thank you 🙏
Maybe To Kill A Mockingbird? (based on your liking of 12 Angry Men) — similar theme of law and justice in court and everything with a defendant who is immediately assumed to be guilty either because racism or it just seems like a ‘clear cut’ case) (like in TAM)
definitely a movie ive been thinking about checking out, thank you 🙏
Awesome! Hope you can find in that, or if not, in others, what you’re looking for :)
I highly recommend Love Exposure
always meant to watch but never have time for the 4 hour length, thank you 🙏
Watch Incendies
thank you 🙏
End of Evangelion is my all time favorite movie. The only movie that i consider to be on par with it is "Gintama: the final"
it’s also my all time fav !!
Constantine
12 Monkeys
So Fucking What
Amistat
Severance (Apple TV)
Bullet Train (2022)
thank you 🙏
I bet you'd really like Network.
thank you 🙏
thank you 🙏
I love most of these.
12 Angry Men: Sunset Blvd, Reservoir Dogs
Parasite: Seven, Fight Club, Taxi Driver
Fallen Angels: The rest of WKW
here are some of my favorites since your taste is similar to mine
-Pulp Fiction -The Irishman -The Godfather -The Social Network -Zodiac -The Sopranos TV show
i’ve actually seen both fight club and taxi driver and love them both quite a bit, as for the others i haven’t seen them so thank you 🙏
Seven is great.
Reservoir dogs isn’t like 12 angry men but it’s set in one place mostly. Great movie though
Have you watched Chungking Express and In The Mood For Love?
i have not seen in the mood for love (which has been suggested a lot now) but i have seen chungking express and loved it!
It’s WKWs best in my opinion!
will watch 🙏🙏
Being John Malkovich
thank you 🙏
omg perfect
one min ur telling me to stfu next min ur praising my movie taste 💔💔😭😭
yea we have similar stuff
what are ur fav movies ?
ym what in my favs? Fallen angels, the end of Evangelion, raw, The accusation
haven’t seen the other two but evangelion and fallen angels are my top 2 ever i love them so much
these two stuff can’t be unloved^^ the other stuff is just my personal experience, I do think they’re good movies but I just relate to them. i mean I see some relationships there in my life and in raw she’s kinda me
that’s why i love eva and fallen angels so much, there’s something about their messages and plots that connect with me so deeply. same with the first half of chungking express
yea I love the killer agent sm this movie gives me vibes I always wanna smoke after that and Evangelion is literally me I’ve no idea how to describe Evangelion without sounding cringy but yea
Synecdoche: New York
it's more surreal than those, but if you like evangelion you'll probably get some value out of it
also been meaning to watch, thank you 🙏🙏
Spiderman into the spiderverse
i saw it back when it came out but i don’t remember much about it, i’ll definitely give it a rewatch
Anyone said therapy yet?
nah this is ur opportunity
Probably YourMovieSucks lol
I'd suggest Synecdoche, New York. And Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Or anything else Charlie Kaufman's been involved with.
Haven't seen it yet but Sorry to Bother You sounds up your alley
mother!
thank you for all the recommendations 🙏
Porn>Movies
