I get the style of it, but I'm pretty sure the snes would explode having to actually process this
I get the style of it, but I'm pretty sure the snes would explode having to actually process this
SNES 2.
Do you mean the N64? Or did you mean the Nintendo Playstation?
New SNES
Realistic Nintendo naming tbh
NEW! Super Nintendo Entertainment System
The second model would still blow up
The late-gen SNESs that use emulation for backwards compatibility could maybe handle this in native mode.
SNES 2 would be sick !
Listen, this looks beautiful, but saying this is "reimagined for SNES" is factually incorrect. A SNES could not dream of displaying an image of this quality and with this many colors. If you're interested in recreating an authentic SNES look, I would suggest researching the limitations of the hardware, because it could NOT do this lol. Regardless, this looks phenomenal!
I'm glad someone said this, and the responses weren't "yOu ArE a HaTeR"
This is far beyond the SNES's capabilities from both a resolution and color pallet standpoint. This is closer Capcom CPS2/CPS3 level quality (Not even sure about CPS2), so this would line up with the Dreamcast abilities.
Could the Neo Geo pull this off? It feels like it could have.
Not an expert, but as is? 100? I'm kinda doubting it. This seems to be a fairly high res image. Also my instinct says the color pallete is too big.
You could probably come really close, but I think there would be noticeable differences.
Oh yeah, didn't think about resolution. The NG wasn't typically nearly this high-res.
No, the neogeo has a huge color Palette
Actually, it would be more in line with PS1/N64.
SNES has a direct color mode with 2048 colors, it wouldn't look quite this good but you could get closer than you think.
Yeah that SNES would be on fire.
[deleted]
Not just that it had to use a thing called palettes because it did not have anywhere near enough memory to color every pixel of the 256×224 pixel resolution with any 16 bit color.
And honestly that makes a lot of the games created by the devs that much more impressive. The tricks they had to pull squeeze every last ounce of power from that machine.
Someone made a "new" snes game a while ago and they released videos showing how they made everything work.
One of the things they did was basically mirror some of their enemies, so they could compress some of the graphics by 75% if they could use each rotation!
Edit: sorry if that's not clear. Basically if you think of an O as an enemy, instead of storing a huge O, you could store 1/4 of it and then create the enemy with four copies.
You should definitely watch some of the videos about how ATARI 2600 devs used a concept called "racing the beam" it's fascinating how ingenious they were.
Here's one for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJFnWZH5FXc
Thanks! I'll absolutely check that out.
I'm relatively young, so my experience programming is in the era where memory is damn near the cheapest part of a computer, so it's really cool to see all the tricks people thought up to work around system limitations.
Absolutely. I am envious that you have a lot of cool videos and things to learn about video game design ahead of you!
That's how the GBA, with basically the same power, had games the SNES could never dream of.
Are you talking about Micro Mages?
https://youtu.be/ZWQ0591PAxM
That's exactly the video I was talking about!
It's why the SNES's resident Zelda, ALttP, used something more akin to an 8-bit framework rather than the 16-bit graphics the system was known for. It's not true 8-bit, but it was a huge space saver that allowed for a more complex game. And it's hard to deny that of any of the top down Zeldas, the only other top down Zelda games as complex as it gameplay-wise are the Oracle games and ALBW. And the latter is because it started as a remake of ALttP and uses the same exact setting as ALttP.
You're not thinking of a SNES game, you're thinking of a NES game: Micro Mages.
Here is the video explaining how they fit the game into 40KB.
The video is definitely worth a watch, and the game is nice as well.
Edit: I should have read the comments further down, someone already said it.

Well ain't that something. Was he from Wisconsin?
[Removed due to continuing enshittification of reddit.] -- mass edited with redact.dev
I think the main issue with your method is the palette limitation of a single tileset, you would have to break everything up into several sets and several different palettes in order to achieve the results you got, which would make certain color combinations difficult/impossible to achieve and increase draw time significantly.
I had a small factual inaccuracy in my above post, actually, because it's been a long time and I am dumb. If you did this in Mode 3 on the SNES, that supports 256 color tiles using the entirety of the palette in CGRAM. If you optimized your palette correctly you could actually pull of my linked image with no palette swapping trickery at all provided you didn't need to do a bunch of other layering and scrolling (which in this case, you don't).
You would definitely have to bank switch tiles mid-frame in that case, though, because at a full 8 bits per pixel you'd be hard pressed to fit an entire screen's worth of unique tiles in VRAM all at once.
You can also directly assign pixel colors in Mode 3 with R,G,B values but you don't quite have the entire color gamut of the SNES available to you because only 15, not 16, bits are available per pixel using that method.
This video probably explains it better than I can.
Honestly it's just a complex topic with a ton of nuance involved, far too much to consider in mere reddit posts. I'm just happy there's some other hardware nerds out there willing to talk about this haha. I also forgot about mode 3, as long as a frame buffer is set up correctly, you might honestly be able to bypass some of the limitations previously discussed and pull it off!
While we have you here, why would you say the SNES had such dynamic sound? Is it just it's 8 channels and higher audio resolution? I know it's about 32kHz sampling, which is approaching CD quality at 44kHz.
You would definitely have to bank switch tiles mid-frame in that case
It's worse than that. You can't bankswitch graphics on the SNES. the SPPU doesn't have direct access to the CHR via the cartridge pins, unlike the NES where you can bank in any graphics at any time.
Example: This amount of graphics at this frame rate is impossible on the SNES, but totally works on the NES.
If you used direct color mode then there would be no palette limitation.
Cool. Always interesting to read about niche topics like this.
Could you use the S-DD1 chip to make it practical? And if you can get it efficient, don't forget you can boost above the 256 palette limit with layered blending.
This is a great read!
Thank you. It looks kick-ass, but this is 100% a modern indie style. Not a 90-percent-of-the-screen-is-brown sand-and green grass-FF style SNES.
Seriously. Probably a young kid who looked pixel art and thought her this looks like snes.
SNES couldn’t even come close to this. The animation of the hair. The leaves flowing about. The resolution. Especially when you zoom in. It’s still crystal clear.
Again, I want to reiterate that I think this art is fucking incredible, however OP definitely misused the SNES label for some extra clicks.
No I agree. Fantastic work. Reminds of old pc adventure games starting screens like kings quest.
But no snes can run this.
But maybe that’s what people do. Write controversial titles to get more engagement
Almost certainly haha, they get nerds like me riled up and typing away with titles like that.
I wouldn't even say that VGA PCs could do this. They had larger pixels than this and only 256 colours at a time. Whereas this image apparently has over 200,000 colours.
It's like when I hear composers do "music in the style of NES," and mix 16 tracks. At best, the NES could only handle 5 channels MAX, and that includes sfx.
“In the style of” saves them there
Yeah, kind of like how Shovel Knight recreates the feeling of NES while not keeping all limitations, such as the extremely limited colors and the horizontal sprite limit. The idea is that you create something that resembles people’s memory of the thing.
However, for OP’s work, as incredible as it is (seriously - it’s gorgeous), it looks nothing like any SNES game.
Especially when you zoom in. It’s still crystal clear.
The SNES deals with pixels, so zooming in would give you perfect accuracy on an LCD screen too
No it’s not. Go look up any snes screenshot. And zoom on anything and it looks like a bunch of jumbled pixels. Zoom in at least 2x.
Zoom in 2x on This and it’s clear very clear. You can still make the hair. The mountains. And other details
The SNES outputs discrete pixels, like all Nintendo consoles before and after.
Do you maybe mean the resolution is too high?
Yes I know, maybe snes 2 :P
Definitely SNES 32x
Honestly just looking at this image I can say it would need to be a snes 64x lol, theres a lotta color
Screw it, put it on SNES 360
With LOCK ON TECHNOLOGY
SNES PANTONE™️
Oh shit, the Super Duper Nintendo Entertainment System!
damn they finally got blast processing on the SNES
As constructive criticism, I would also probably put the "press start" below the title, above the sword. Seems too low where it is now. I enjoy the work overall though, as a pixel art.
Press Start at the bottom of the screen is real NES aesthetic smh this pic is all over the place /s
It’s a bit of a peeve of mine when people say stuff like this or when they call anything pixelated 8-bit.
This is more like mid 90s PC
Yeah, came here to say this. Quite an impressive piece and certainly in a retro-reminiscent style. But at this point, calling pieces like this "in the style of SNES" is buzzwordy and click baity. Make something with the limitations of the SNES and I will not be so critical. Just call it "SNES-inspired" or something.
Yeah, it's wonderful art and I really dig it. But the title just leaves me wanting more. (Or less, technically)
Thank you. It makes me feel old to think that a bunch of people can look at this and think that’s what games on the SNES probably looked like. No, no, no.
Was about to say this. We can certainly recreate a retro look, but the actual specs of the SNES could in no way handle all this. I think the frame rate alone is an issue as well as the detailed pixel art and the colors. Beautiful work, though
YOURE FUCKING WRONG! but hey good work.
-This guy.
But seriously I agree with you.
How many colors do you think there are?
I’m pretty sure the sky and water share colors here and it looks like Link and Zelda do too.
I guess I would agree overall. Obviously a true SNES title screen wouldn’t look exactly like this, but I have to wonder whether it’s really impossible or just a little bit beyond.
A snes couldn't get even close to this result. There's a lot more that goes on with image display in older consoles than just "display this image". Even with immense optimization, a snes couldn't display this as a still image without bitcrushing it immensely first.
This also looks like it has too much resolution for a SNES, although I'm not sure
Everything about it is completely fucking wrong. It's a beautiful piece of art and the OP did a great job, but it's pretty clear OP never spent much time playing SNES.
SNES resolution was 256x224
Well, for one thing the SNES had a resolution of 256x224, so this is much higher resolution than that.
I can't prove the color resolution is higher than the SNES was capable of, but I'm pretty sure that it is. Part of that is there's just no way that you could have that detailed of gradations within such a small resolution, but I just don't think the SNES has that kind of palette to begin with.
Beyond that, there's probably a bit too much animation going on here. There aren't huge movements, but they're and there's a lot of pixels running around.
Higher resolution sure, but considering the “pixel count” of the image, I’m not sure its that far off.
As for colors, I suspect it’s doable. The real issue likely isn’t the number of colors so much as fidelity/color depth, if that’s what you mean by color resolution.
I wasn’t really considering the animation, though the hair movement, a limited sun effect, and some water movements might not be impossible. Would have been technically impressive though.
https://www.racketboy.com/retro/super-nintendo-snes-games-that-pushed-the-limits-graphics-soun
I’m not excluding the additional features of supplemental chips that were used in more than one ge from consideration.
There's a lot to cover here, but I'll try my best to explain the limitations of the SNES, and why this is impossible.
First of all the SNES could only display 256 colors simultaneously, seems like a lot at first but this gets complicated when pallets are taken into consideration because sprites could only have 16 colors at once. Still seems like a lot, until you take into effect how the SNES handles assigning pallets. Giving each sprite it's own pallet is a massive waste of resources, and constantly calling a new pallet to draw new colors every frame would make games completely unplayable. Most games only used about 3 at once, meaning those 16 colors were being shared a LOT. Furthermore the color depth was significantly lower as well, meaning they had fewer colors to choose from. Many of the colors in this artwork weren't even supported by the SNES. There is also the issue of the sprite's size (The SNES was capable of sprite scaling using it's infamous Mode 7, but this stretched pixels and did not preserve their resolution). Animated sprites of this size would be a massive hit to performance, and the limited color palette would be even more noticeable with a bigger sprite. FURTHERMORE even if this WAS being drawn using Mode 7, Mode 7 cannot be drawn at the same time as another background layer, and you can only have 1 Mode7 layer at a time!. (games like Fzero made clever use of sprites to pull off a "background", but this was expensive and only worked because Fzero had very little going on in terms of sprites besides the cars) ANNND if this WAS Mode 7, it would still be restricted to a 16 color palette! Even with enhancement chips, this is impossible, there is no way to display this image on a snes correctly.
I’m not sure why you are focusing so much on ‘sprites’ here. Perhaps you mean to say tiles? Assume the image is static and there are no leaves, then what?
Sorry, I was trying to simplify because I don't know the extent of your knowledge of the system. A sprite is a collection of tiles with logic assembling them, so it still works in this context, but yes tiles is a little more specific.
For this thought exercise, let's assume we want to draw this to the screen with a background layer
If the image was static it would first need to be scaled down to the snes's output resolution of 256 X 224. Then, it would to be bitcrushed, I.E it's color depth would need to be restricted to the SNES's selection of colors. We'll assume for this exercise that the only purpose of this "game" is to display this still image. As such we can use 8 pallets simultaneously, which does help a lot, but a single tileset cannot have several pallets applied to it at once, which means we have to split things up into 8 different tilesets. Not a huge issue, but the SNES can only handle 4 simultaneous BG layers. This means we'll need to supplement the 4 missing layers with very large sprites. This increases draw time considerably, especially with 8 separate pallets to get called and drawn by the processor.
The result would be a severely bitcrushed image with an output resolution of 256 X 224, and an incredibly long draw time. At this point, your Snes would basically be doing a "Render" and not a screen draw, and the resulting image would not be comparable to it's original quality.
Thanks for sharing, I will have to read more on the matter some time.
Umm ... ACTUALLY
Thanks. I feel like people just say anything now
I was going to say this looks more like a DS start screen.
Yeah you see NES or SNES art and while it's awesome it's always beyond the limitation of the system. Just call it pixel art and stop baiting by association.
Maybe it’s reimagined for the reimagined SNES, did ya think of that?
Man that’s the first thing I said before I even opened up the comments
This is probably ok for a Gameboy Advance
Resolution too high for the GBA, sorry.
You could probably achieve something like this using one of the SNES background modes plus some clever combination of layer effects and scanline palette swapping trick. Though you'd use up pretty much all the RAM just displaying an image with nothing much left over for gameplay or sprites.
Here's an overview of the different background modes and their limitations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SBEAZIfDAg
I feel like I see a lot of this type of thing with songs that are covered to sound like it came from a nes or snes. But it's usually way to complex for that would be on those systems. Just because it has an 8bit sound to it doesn't make it a nes song.
Yeah, this is closer to the PSX.
I agree, this is a beautiful piece of pixel art.
Snes had 32,000 colors
And it could display only 256 at a time. (With some exceptions)
The URL says this is a GIF; is it not? A GIF also has a 256-color limit, right? It has a 24-bit palette instead of a 15-bit one, but . .
I quantized the colors to 5 bits each for R,G,B, and got this.
I will Also create a wallpaper version for desktop and mobile soon. :P
Thanks for watching!

Edit: I know this is not SNES art. Just inspired in SNES tittle screens.
Edit 2: Since this post reached an audience outside the pixelart community, I have been receiving hate comments about the SNES stuff, please is not necessary to keep commenting that, there are already comments about that... I Never tried to use the Tittle for clicks, I don't need a clickbait tittle, the art itself is enough. I made a mistake with the tittle, I can't edit it. I know this is not a SNES tittle screen, It's something you could imagine with fewer details, resolution and colors of course... I'm developing a game for Game Boy, if there is someone who knows about hardware limitations that's me... Thanks for watching!
Pure madness! I will download the mobile version for sure 😸
agreed can't wait
This is stunning. I don’t think the SNES hardware could even handle it. To me it looks like a PC game from that era.
Have you done art for games? Is that something you’re interested in?
Exactly.. this would have been a 2D N64 game like Yoshi's story
Would agree. It's gorgeous pixel art, but very ambitious to ask of a SNES.
I came here hoping to get a mobile background and I was rewarded!

Can you create one where Zelda is getting an education
Please, post here again when you've made the wallpaper! It's gorgeous, I can't wait!
Feel like I could stare at this for hours. Great job!
Thanks!
The snes could not dream of displaying something this good. It looks fantastic, except from Zelda's hand over her face, which looked a bit strange and confusing to me.
It almost looks like Link is reaching over and covering her mouth too.
Looks too good for SNES.
This looks beautiful
Thanks!
I can already hear the lofi
x) Maybe i will create a YT playlist
This is more PS1 era graphics. You can't do this on a SNES. Why is this so hard for people.
Beautiful art though.
Pixel Art ≠ SNES
You should get onto the "second wind" team and see if they want to include it in their DLC. I'd back up that art 200% in a vote
xD thanks!
Looks like 41k people would vote for you too... Get onto them now!
Amazing but a SNES would explode
SNES apparently just means low resolution
This is way higher resolution than the SNES was actually capable of, though.
SNES could only display 256x224
[deleted]
The total unique tile count would still be limited, though.
SNES had HDMA which you could use to achieve something like this by modifying tilesets on the fly.
Do you know what the words, '16' and, 'bits' mean when put together cause it's not this. Good art though
Yes, just inspired in.
If I saw this without context, I would not think SNES. It would not be possible to have those colors and animations. The overall style (font, shading techniques, subject matter) does not evoke anything about the 90s.
Reimagined as a "2010s pixel indie game" would be a more accurate description to me.
Yes.
In no way shape or form does this look in any way at all like anything that was ever published for SNES. Every single aspect is incorrect. Please don't try to glom credibility from something you know nothing about
lol
u/savevideo
Question out of curiosity: How do you got about making art in this style? Can't imagine you still do it in essence "pixel by pixel" like smaller pixel art?
Pixel by pixel with Photoshop and a drawing tablet.
This is gorgeous op. I would love to see a painting process!
Thanks!

What a discovery! I've just followed you on Twitter: what a bliss to scroll through your art! You are very talented
The SNES couldn’t even display this making full use of dithering. What you’ve made is far more nuanced and beautiful than the SNES’s capabilities to render. The SNES and the JRPG era it heralded are my favorite in gaming, but your art is just too good for it.
Your pixel art is really, really good. Kudos!
Thanks!
Cuteeeee!!!
looks Amazing Keep up the great work
Thanks!
np
Beautiful
I will start with this. It looks really nice!
But this would make a ps1 (two generations later) run at 10 fps theres more detail in this than ff7 or ff8
More like NDS
What’s the snes powerful enough to look that good in bitform?
Sorry. The SNES is way too underpowered for this.
🤓☝ummmmm actually this wouldn't work on a snes
Reimagined for PlayStation, maybe.
SNES would explode trying to process all that.
[deleted]
oh no.... :(
This is gorgeous but I feel like calling it reimagined for DS would be more realistic
I think the DS has an even lower resolution than the SNES... Palette-wise, it could fit the DS... But resolution would have to be reduced... By a lot.
Lotta snes autists in the comments here apparently (epic art btw)
Call me an SNES autist but you can't call a PlayStation screenshot as NES art. Just saying.
So, by reading all those hater comments about this is not SNES instead it is more like this and that, all of you should just shut up!! The creator even said that it was only inspired by the SNES title screens. It is extremely beautiful and is an Art by itself. Just by looking at this image, I was getting hyped to either play an old SNES Zelda or BOTW tonight. This is magical and I think it deserves more respect!! Everyone should just appreciate more what we have instead of hate and complain about everything that we either not have or don’t like.
Big respect to the creator of this Wallpaper Art! Keep doing what you are doing!
Big thanks!
Show me one SNES title screen that looks like this, ONE. You stupid cunt.
Check my first comment.
Nah mate I aint checking out any more of your SHIT. Youre a joke lad.
You kinda said it too harshly, but I understand your frustration.
Here we spend time and effort to study the limitations of old computer hardware so we can finally be happy when we create "hardware accurate art", and one person makes pixel art without any consideration to the hardware and calls it "SNES reimagined", like, what were you imagining????? An SNES with a Nvidia 940MX??? Makes me feel really disappointed.
Big words, maybe YOU should see a doctor.
Amazing job. 13/12 beets. would definitely play
Thanks!
thank you for making lovely image. I love little leaves going by. That must be hard to do
God that's beautiful......

Ok, I honestly would want that as a picture for the BotW on Switch home screen
I just want this for my wallpaper pls

Is there a certain technique to making pixel are or do you simply just use a certain tool?
I use Photoshop with a resolution around 240-360p
Then you do a paint by numbers type of deal?
Are you serious this is 360p? And what computer outputs at 360p anyway.
wow looks amazing dude
Thanks!
Hey, if you designed this, you may want to say something over on r/gaming, because someone's shared your design.

Omg this looks really awesome!!!
It’s beautiful. I’ve looked at this for five hours now
Maybe Sega Genesis or PSX? SNES wasn't quite this good for pixel art.
I think genesis is closer.
I mean... W... Wuh?
The Genesis as you call it, had 64 onscreen colours. SNES had 256.
Sorry but do you even know what you're talking about?

Why do you keep saying that like it's a thing?

Okay, let me just make a 65,536-color (in Display P3 color space by the way) palette pixel art at 1920x1080 and call it "an 8-bit pixel art inspired by the NES... Oh, sorry, the NES 2."

Love Zelda
Very nice.
It's beautiful!
i think the snes would die before even being able to load this
Wouldn't work on the snes. Too much detail and too many colours.
This looks so awful
-ly amazing
The comments on this are a huge reddit moment
Looks amazing. Love the colours
Thanks!
Look at those colours, bro!
I feel like I could watch this for hours!
Seeing this on a Saturday afternoon would be my personal heaven.
It would definitely be possible on the n64, though if a full BotW n64 rom build was made it would be revolutionary & definitely push the console lololol
I feel like everything I saw on the N64 was much more blurry than this.
Whoa that’s pretty!!!

I waited 5 minutes for someone to press start. I give up.
xD
I am fairly confident the SNES would not be able to render that many colours at once.
And that many pixels, either
The SNES resolution is around 320x last I checked.
So...a quarter of this image? Even less?
I haven't checked the resolution of this "reimagined SNES" art, but yes, it is very much impossible, not just because of the resolution, but also because of unique tile limitations and of course, the colors :)
SNES is at least 256x224, it can go up to 512x224 but that won't increase the maximum limit of unique tiles on screen. You get denser pixels at the 512x224 resolution but you will have to duplicate way more tiles across the screen.
Now if they could just turn BotW into a really great Zelda game, I would be happy.
To explain, certain elements were applied, but for the most part it's a poor showing: a solo game of endless fetch and side-questing, weapon busting and collecting, and free-range action platforming, with mounts, and a Zelda-like overlay to convince people it's a real Zelda game.
Yeah, I probably put a good 60+ hours in, but never finished. The game eventually bored me to quitting, though I may go back for more some day.
But I'm not the kind of person that runs around proselytizing my worldview because it just so happens to reaffirm my own beliefs. That's exactly what it takes to convince people this is both a real Zelda game and a good Zelda game. It is a good game. It's just not a good Zelda game nor is it a good representation of Zelda. In fact, it's the opposite: an insult. And truth, emphatic, to pretend that we should be tricked into believing that.
Just saw this on Twitter, so cool!!
Thanks!
Ok www.claimhub.in
It’s…beautiful.
When a chill after a rough fuck just hits different
I love this so much
Thanks!
SUPER R A D! 😎
It’s ok A Link to the Past bows to no-one
omfg this is sooooo beautiful
Thanks!
Nice
Beautiful
It looks like a modern indie game, not a SNES game tbqh
It's not even in the SNES style tbh, other than PRESS START.
The strength of the wind to be pushing their hair sideways like that doesn't really match how kempt their hair remains.
solo
What sorcery is this!
It's because it isn't compatible with the SNES in the first place. Like, at all.
😍
10/10

I wish AAA made a game like this. Can you guys imagine a FF17 in this style?
Looks great but maybe more of a gba botw
Snes couldn't run this
It's been less than 2 days and this is the 4th most popular post on the sub. 🗿
beautiful <3
After you beat the Bronx
I guess the SNES could not actually handle this many pixels but nonetheless it would've been dope af to watch it burn trying to display it
Man how did you run this thing on the snes.
