This is my reaction to most of what Illumination Studios makes... unfortunately that's usually where my praise stops.

Yeah, their animation is consistently good bordering on great, but it always feels like their movies are missing something. Can't put in words what that something is, but it's missing.

Good writing, character development that lasts and has impact, no minions, and good writing

Can I just say that the first despicable me had all of those (minus the minions, of course, but they weren’t overused at the time).

It was honestly a pretty cute and delightful childrens story that even adults could enjoy… and now it’s just full blown wackiness.

Yeah, the first one was sweet and enjoyable, it just got milked dry sadly

What you're sensing is the difference between technical artistry, which they do very well, and actual creative art.

Their movies aren't written, they're researched. Every aspect is crafted from decades of industry data indicating what will appeal to the largest potential audience and sell the most merch.

Do we have different quality of eyes or something? Illumination consistently has the worst, most bland animation of big budget animated features. They don't have to be Pixar, but it's just not even close. So much Illumination stuff just reuses assets and outright looks ugly. They have yet to do anything notably creative or stylized either.

Probably just different personal backgrounds in critique, I doubt your vision is subpar in some way. I won't disagree with you that of the big budget animation studios, Illumination is probably the least talent filled now that Blue Sky is gone and Sony has seemingly turned it around. That said, they still have a lot of talented animators and imo have some moments of genuinely impressive animation. I do think they have some unique stylizations and character designs (though yeah they reuse a lot), so I disagree that they have yet to do anything creative. To me, their animation is good enough that if they had other elements like good character development, compelling plot lines and decent scoring, they could create a picture, maybe not as good as Pixar or Dreamworks, but close.

They are so simple, just need to learn it. I have worked in both film and TV. Piracy does not hurt the actors or crew’s pay checks in anyway. In fact it helps their work be seen by more people who would not have seen it. Piracy hurts the pay checks of the corporate people at the top like network executives who had nothing to do with the production in anyway and take a huge slice of pie.

When you think about it: I’m in my early 30’s and have watched The Office basically on repeat since S01E01 aired… a lot of friends my age have kids and I’m pretty sure kids are like, contractually obligated to love Minions. This really hits at two target audiences… not a bad idea.
