I’m not one of the people who were making that suggestion, but I will admit, as someone who grew up in somewhat of a cult, I was unsure if the voicemail was a joke or not because I heard similar things growing up from people who were dead serious. I actually came to the comments to try and see if OP had made any comments about if his brother was serious. I really don’t know that people who are taking the original voicemail seriously can be written off as not having a sense of humor because as insane as it sounds, the things his brother said on the phone call are not really that out there for religious fundamentalists.

I was debating while watching between mentally ill or religious cult. I have met both types and they were doing this very seriously.

I think the line where he says something like "How come every time i call you about satan you never pick up?" is a dead give away that this is a running joke.

Maybe if you didn’t grow up in that kind of environment cause again that’s exactly the type of thing people I grew up around would say. “It’s interesting how you never answer the phone when I’m trying to save your soul. Satan is trying to keep you from listening to the truth.” That kind of stuff isn’t uncommon.

Just wanted to add to what you said. I have Bipolar. I once was clearly convinced in my own delusional “reality” that I was sent by the universe to save the world from destruction, and that I was elected as the first female President in the US. I personally knew of a man who had delusions of Satan talking to him through his TV once. I guess any of us who have direct/indirect experiences of mental health issues are more inclined to relate to the more serious side, since it’s an actual part of life for millions of us. I mean… people can complain about others not getting this as a joke, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that all jokes are not universally funny. While this did make me laugh a bit, it’s really quite understandable why people would get concerned.

Yeah, I had an ex bf that would call me and leave voicemails for years that included a bunch of satan-related content. I assumed the brother was schizophrenic/schizoaffective at first watch. I still thought/think the video is funny. Maybe that’s just how the brothers are choosing to cope with an unfortunate disorder that one of them is suffering from, I thought, lol. It would be a funny way to reframe what could otherwise be seen as dark or sad. That’s what I like in comedy the most. Tbh it’s less funny to me knowing that it’s just a joke from the start. But obviously it’s better that neither of them are suffering from delusions or hallucinations.

Public opinion is relevant. If you're a standup comic and you tell a joke to a room full of people and nobody laughs, good chance that joke isn't funny. You can be a pedant and say, "well actualllllllly one person laughed and humor is subjective so technicallllly I am funny." But that won't get you booked again. Alamo Drafthouse plays funky/obscure shorts before each movie that match the movie's theme. They should play this before any Satan-themed movies, like Devil's Advocate or Constantine.

PSA: if you have never been to Alamo Drafthouse and you have the opportunity, do it! This is weird to say, but they really care about movies. They play current movies but also do short runs of classic or obscure movies too.

And for every movie, they show tons of short videos or cartoons that relate to the theme of that specific movie. I always make sure to get seated at least 15 minutes early just to watch that stuff!

I recently saw the new Nicholas Cage movie at an Alamo Drafthouse. Before the movie they showed a video of him reading an Edgar Allen Poe poem at another Alamo location. And before the movie started, the announcement to shut off your phones was also from Nicholas Cage!

No joke, Alamo is just amazing. Great food, they don't skimp on what movies they play, the staff is always super chill, and just about everyone I've ever run into there is super nice and respectful as opposed to people who go to the bigger theater chains. Alamo is cash.

I appreciate a weird sense of humor. I have a very weird sense of humor which is why I had to change therapists. My old one was afraid of me. But sometimes when people start in with the Devil, it could very well not be a joke, at least in my experience. I have been in inpatient mental health facilities and Satan is a popular subject in those places. The fact that the guy makes a living writing weird shit would indicate that it's highly likely to be a joke, as most of the time, if someone honestly believed that if you play the guitar, you will go to hell and be accompanied by Satan on drums, they probably don't have a job. Unless that job involves holding revivals in tents in the rural Southern United States.

It's never expressly said, but the devil is holding the fiddle he's playing and then when Johnny wins he lays the golden fiddle at Johnny's feet. So I always assume that he had been holding (and thus playing) the golden fiddle.

I actually learned and played much of Devil Went Down to Georgia, and boy let me tell you what. Johnny's part was certainly difficult, but the Devil's part was much much harder. Lots of string crossing, bridging, and accidentals that made it sound more dissonant and "bad", but ultimately made it seem like the Devil was throwing the competition. Perhaps giving a cocky upstart a golden violin led to better sins down the line.

The Sin of Pride. Johnny knows he's bested the Devil himself in a contest and his soul is secure, no need to repent, he's 'the best there's ever been.'

I read a theory once that the devil lost on purpose. The idea being that Johnny sinned already by accepting the duel for the golden fiddle, thus ensuring the devil gets Johnny’s soul anyway. By letting him win others will see Johnny with the golden fiddle and lust for their own and try to duel the devil themselves which ultimately gets him more souls.

It's a less known fact, but it's actually because he was lending out his own fiddle to a danish guy named "Kresten" for a couple of days.

When I was 21 I went down to Key West during the cigarette boat races. Strippers had come in from various parts of the world to work the local clubs, smartly so because there is a ton of money that gets moved around during those races.

Lights off, dark club, then a spotlight on one stage. A dancer comes up, sits down on the stage, and maneuvers herself so her back is on the stage, and her rump is above her propped up on a box. Her own box was facing the crowd.

So with her undercarriage the only thing being illuminated in the entire club she splits her legs in the air and is holding a bow in one hand and a puppet in the other. I don't think it's a controversial thing to say that there's a breakpoint where the general humor between generations deviates from traditional to more ironic and post-ironic. This clearly falls into the latter category and would easily be something that older people "don't really get".

The thought process is often something like, “I don’t know if I [the loved one or other concerned party] can keep this person safe on their way to the hospital, but emergency services probably can.” We also get more than our fair share of people (especially teenagers coming from school, but that’s a separate though related issue) who come via EMS and absolutely did not need them involved whatsoever.

I think you’re right but I can hardly blame them. Teachers can’t and shouldn’t be asked to make that judgment. Now when school counselors, social workers, and psychologists are forced to make that call, that’s different. They should absolutely be asked to do so. Otherwise I wonder what they’re there for.

If they're off their meds and they're leaving voicemails rambling deranged nonsense then it might be a good idea to have the police check in on them — if they've been known to be a danger to themselves or others in similar circumstances before. If they're an immediate hazard to themselves or others or, like in the case of my mother, you want to involuntarily commit them for psychiatric eval. It varies state to state but in mine it's a 72 hour psych warrant issued by a judge based on affadavits.

Mom turned out ok. If you think a loved one is suffering from what looks like dimentia mixed with schizophrenia please have them checked for meningitis. Its not a sure or even aajority likely thing, but it is a good rock to turn over.

Schizophrenia doesn't have to be like that. You can have paranoid delusions and still look rational. My aunt is 72, she looks super normal but apparently she also thinks (among other things) that her dentist put a listening device in her tooth and listens to her conversations. One time she was alone with my dad and refused to talk him, only communicating by writing. You couldn't tell she has these delusions just by talking to her.

There are cases of tooth fillings picking up radio waves, without understanding that and experiencing the phenomenon would be creepy as heck.

The vast majority of the many people I've met and worked with who have psychotic disorders could be at a level with their symptoms where they leave voicemails like this and not be even close to being a danger to themselves or others. Some people just live with delusions all the time.

This is fascinating because I know it's a joke and that op's brother is just messing with him, but I work in community mental health, specifically with people living with schizophrenia or other mental illnesses that cause psychosis. This is exactly what it sounds like sometimes when a client has had a break and calls me or someone on my team. The amount of bizarre voicemails I've been left about demons, spaceships, etc. Is too high to count. It's really sad in that context, obviously, and it usually leads to hospitalization or a med increase, but it's just kinda wild how closely it parallels parody and satire.

Also as an interesting sidenote, religious delusions and AV hallucinations (even sometimes olfactory hallucinations) are the most common type, and they nearly always relate directly to the religion the person was brought up in or believes in. You don't have muslims hallucinating about Christian iconography or vice versa. That to me indicates that there's nothing supernatural going on, just brain chemistry. I also live in the south, where a handful of the parents of my clients are extremely religious, and truly believe that their child's hallucinations are either a gift from god (so they don't want to treat it) or demonic possession (so they want a priest for an exorcism, which is highly traumatic and also total B.S., and often refuse treatment.) It's very, very frustrating.

How would it be in any way surprising if people that observed super natural events would describe them in the manner they've been taught to speak about super natural events?

If a Christian sees an unfathomable being made of light of course they will think it's an angel, while an atheist will of course think it's an alien.

I have a cousin who I love and care for deeply. He's a fantastic guy. Smart, highly educated as both a Nurse and in IT, so he switches up healthcare and IT for his hospital. They love him.

But he got into this church with his wife and went off the deep end. He's convinced liberals are satanists. He believes the earth is only a few thousand years old. Essentially evangelical beliefs... all of them.

I asked him what made him change his mind about all this and he said, "I've seen things in the hospital as a nurse I simply can't explain. People coming back from the dead. People who live but should be dead. Miracles all the time." And I said, "So basically modern medicine works. Imagine living and working in healthcare even a hundred years ago."

There is no changing his mind.

It's amazing how God only figures out how to reliably cure diseases after we do.

Is he an RN? Did he skip the part in nursing school where they explain how "coming back from the dead" works? I've seen people come back from the "dead" many times working on the ambulance, and I can tell you how it works. In fact, I was specifically trained on how to do it.

I don't care if this guy is a believer or whatever, but it's weird that he can't explain these things even after his education and training.

I'm not a believer myself but your response was a tad on the weak side. I think a smart highly educated person who works as a nurse is aware that modern medecine works. But obviously he's met people that were expected to die even with the aid of modern medecine but miraculously didn't.
