also the mods had a ton of drama before that, i think the only based mod left a while before the drama even happened so it was inevitable

i think tech1e left because of a mixture of mod drama and the sub becoming unfunny, which caused the mods to make even more drama because there wasnt anyone to stop them

also i think the subreddit was a sequel to a banned subreddit so the subreddit was already breaking reddit rules anyways, but that was really early in gsb’s lifetime

the original subreddit was r/195 which was essentially the birthplace of most new-age shitposting subs ( r/whenthe r/196 r/gayspiderbrothel r/197 etc)
Anyway so far no subreddit really was able to replicate what r/195 did really, with r/gayspiderbrothel probably coming the closest along with the really early era of r/196 before politics and unfunny femboy shit went down.
There will never be another r/195 , subs trying to market themselves as the sequel are kidding themselves, heck even r/196 doesn't even try to be what r/195 was , they frequently brag about being the 'official' r/195 while being possibly the worst adaption possible.

So to conclude, r/195 is dead, the sequel subs are either dead or have strayed from the path, and new shitposting subs no longer remember what r/195 was.

r/gayspiderbrothel got popular from spam crossposting and ended up starting a chain reaction that killed all small subs, as then other subreddits wanted the same fame gayspiderbrothel went through by spam crossposting and they always reposted another meme they found on reddit to their subredddit, then crossposted it to smaller subs that had their own personality with their own unpersonalized memes which ended up causing a chance of a funny new meme sub appearing anytime soon, although the crossposting has died down since gsb days

also yeah, i was there for r/195, but i think that r/gayspiderbrothel actually came from like r/lefisheaucum or some sub like that, as it got banned for some reason so tech1e made another one, but i dont think the original r/lefisheaucum was inspired by 195/196

also imo when 195 wasnt shut down it was kind of mid, i remember joining 196 and leaving 195 a couple months before 195 ever even shut down and only knew about it from 196, honestly when 195 was open 196 was a lot better then 195’s final days, but i think old 195 before it became more of a meme sub was better but wasnt specifically trying to be funny always

also r/whenthe wasnt copying 195’s golden days, it was more copying 196’s golden days if i remember correctly

but honestly reddit in general has been feeling kind of dead lately, idk if its from being on reddit too long and too much or if ifs genuinely just losing its old personality and becoming slowly less funny, maybe im just missing the amogus days when it was still new and the comments were more creative and funny, maybe im just getting depressed or something

As to your last point, I think meme wise things are going to die down for a while
Think about memes as a couple of eras
2005-2013 was the classic era, original trollface, ragecomics etc
2013-2016 was the MLG era, doritos, mt dew etc
2017-2019 was the surreal era, markiplier E, stonks etc
2019-Now is the post-irony era, with all the modern day memes etc
Consider that each era lasts only around 4-5 years, towards the end the memes get stale, smaller meme subs die and r/memes gets unfunnier than 'normal'
My hypothesis is that memes are due for reset, and that a new era is probably overdue, it could start anywhere, but it will happen soon.

They were the true successor to r/195, unlike r/196

I've talked with the admin of gsb. None of the mods wanted to deal with the sub anymore so they left the sub some time ago and replaced the mod staff with dummy accounts. The admins eventually noticed and locked down the sub for violating Reddit TOS.
