I love magpies any other season than swooping season. But that's an instinctual frenzy they get into while parenting so I can kind of give them a pass.
What's weird is the people that viciously defend them saying "just give them treats so they trust you during swooping season it's not that hard blah blah blah".

This is a thing? Swooping season? My uncle got hit in the head by an owl once but we don't commonly expect it.
During mating season they become aggressively territorial and will swoop people, which means ramming their beaks into your skull at full speed, to chase you away from near their nest.
They also consider the territory around their nest a fairly large area, so it's unavoidable.
However they're smart enough to learn regulars and as such won't generally attack humans they've seen enough times in the past or have provided them with treats and built up a rapport.
Swooping season is magpie specific (maybe other birds do it but I don't know)

So, this is a juvenile magpie trying to get food from Mama magpie, and resorting to some tricks to keep her reminded of the "FEED ME" mantra these babies keep going for the first 3 months of their lives. Some until they're bigger than their mothers. I saw one very frustrated Mama magpie being followed around for HOURS by her bigger baby who was yelling for food, and she turned around and jumped on him. Lol.

I've caught the neighbourhood magpies doing this on low hanging branches of a sapling when they thought no one was looking. Sometimes they wrestle with the young one that hasn't gone off on it's own yet. They're the best birds to watch. They sing nicely too.
It's a shame how much they patrol on the ground because it means they are super vulnerable to peoples' "outdoor cats". I love magpies so much.
Do you have any source about being more vulnerable to cats? I've never heard of Magpies getting caught by cats (for context I live in the Europe, and have heard that countries where cats aren't native that birds are more likely to get caught).

Here's some info. But I will admit that my vehement distaste for feral and outdoor cats comes from an emotional and somewhat anecdotal place. I've just seen to many neighbourhood magpies disappear with only a trail of feathers left to show. Magpies here are not going to be used to cats as a predator, as they would have been among the top of the food chain (depending in the region, there are places with quolls - sometimes called "native cats" - and eagles).
Cats just shouldn't be allowed outside and wild populations should be neutered imho. I love my fur babies to death but it's an environmental solution that would do wonders for local fauna globally.

Fun fact, our upside down friend is a baby (can tell by the grey colouration, don't let the size fool you!) so I suspect that's mum or dad telling them to get down and stop being so embarrassing ๐คฃ often see magpie families hanging out for quite some time together before the babies "leave the nest"

Actually, looking at it again, I believe they are both juveniles, they still have that awkward look about them. Adults are a little sleeker and fuller bodied.
Juveniles will hang out together from ages 2yrs-3yrs old in a big gang and just do silly stuff like this until they start pairing up after 3yrs old.
Looking at the beaks, they're both juvenile ones. Goofy, funny juveniles who haven't learned they are meant to be sleek and majestic yet. (My juvies likes messing with the Christmas lights in the garden. Loved watching them explore!)
I love how crazy inquisitive and smart they are, and their sense of humour which I absolutely believe they must have to do some of the things Iโve caught them doing.

A magpie managed to fly into my chimney one time. It was covered in ash so I grabbed it with a pillow sheet. It was pecking on the hatch for an hour or so before I realized where the sound was coming from.
It wasn't injured so I dusted it off and released it outside.
Next few weeks there where small shiny foil wrappings left on the table on the porch. I suspect it was a grateful magpie leaving me it's most precious trinkets as tribute.
I don't get shinies but the magpies love my yard since I discard my bird's seed out on the grass. little chickadees come for seed too. And then cats after the birds. And then coyote after the cats. I've had to re-wash clothes as the maggies at my house would pull them off the line and then roll around with them. We've fed them mince in the past and they still come up to our back door and peer into the house, looking for a handout. They're very personable birds as long as they aren't swooping you.

We get a lot of magpies in our garden. Even when grown to nearly the size of their parents the youngsters will follow them around asking for food. The young birds make a distinct call which just goes on and on when they're harassing their parents for food. Particularly when the parents start ignoring them on the basis it's time they started feeding themselves.
We get corellas in our street who hang upside down from branches and swing around a bit on one foot. Looks like they're doing it for fun.
Some years ago my sister and her hubbie reared a young magpie that must have fallen out of a nest. They couldn't find the nest so gave the youngster a home. They are very smart birds. Maggie - inspired naming - became part of the family. My brother-in-law would lie on a couch watching television with Maggie lying on his back having his stomach scratched. And also watching the television.
There was a book published a few years ago about a family in Sydney - from memory - that took a load of photos of a a young magpie they reared.
