That's wild! The only other random Charlotte skyline in media that I know of is in The IT Crowd there is an establishing shot of wherever they are (London??) and it is beautiful stock footage of Charlotte! Very surprising when I first watched the show, and it only appears for a brief second.

That's wild! Do you have a link to that?

Never seen this, Matt Berry is hilarious on What We Do in the Shadows too

Berry is the best mid series cast replacement EVER

I notice that every time I watch that episode!

I caught this having just watched IT crowd very recently, was a great little surprise

That whole movie was shot in Charlotte

Was used on the first Civilization cover as well. I believe Microprose was in the Research Triangle when these games were released.

That's fucking wild!

Yes, apparently using Charlotte as a city name was a trigger for something in the game. I played all but the first game so I don’t remember what is was.

If I remember correctly, the first cover was actually the promo poster for the Ramses exhibit that came to the Mint. It made it easy for Microprose to make a cover.

We don't have pyramids, statue of liberty, or elephants wtf?

yeah, Charlotte has changed a lot the past few years

We should’ve never gave the Statue of Liberty back

Who needs a Statue of Liberty when we Shake Shack

they tore them all down to build apartments, breweries, and Applebees :(

We do have helicopters tho 👍

Yea man those wonders got traded for breweries. Apparently each brewery gives a +5 happiness, +10 gold, and +1 to culture.

The bad part is that once you have 10 in a city each additional one adds -1 happiness based on city pop. Apparently there’s a bug in code that pops start loosing happiness based on the amount of breweries. The devs however decided that it makes for great fun and isn’t completely broken.

We had to tear them down to build parking lots.

I just watched Shallow Hal last night. It was filmed in Charlotte and they show the BoA building multiple times. The Episcopalian church in uptown is in one shot. They even show/eat at Fuel Pizza for a scene. Pretty cool to see.

RIP Pikes Soda Shop

They also had a scene at McIntosh’s, which was a pretty decent steak spot in south end. If I’m not mistaken it’s the location that was most recently the Manchester?

My sister and her friends were extras in that movie. Jack black briefly checks them out at toward the beginning. Basically famous

There was a guy in that movie with a handicap. We used to see about town in charlotte back in the 80's. Never spoke with him but he was always smiling.

Great game playing civ 6 with my kids now days

Sounds like a great way to create trust issues.

"Dad, why are you putting a bunch of your forces at my border?"

"...Just hanging out."

A few turns later

"CASUS BELLI FOR BEING GULLIBLE BITCH, SON"

Ha nah I just convert him to my religion and wait til the end. We aren’t very competitive

become gandhi

Definitely not gonna be able to win a culture victory as the Charlotte civ.

Playing as Charlotte it’s definitely possible to get culture victory. You just have to spend your build capacity all in Applebees and Breweries. Starting out you want to max out on Applebees, then about mid game start converting those Applebees to breweries. Breweries give a +10 to culture per turn, but you start gaining -1 happiness that increase for every new brewery you add to a district.

Gotta make sure to get those unpaid freelance artists churned out too if you wanna get it done before turn 300.

I had no idea. Civ II is one of my all-time favorite games. This is really neat!

Just curious, how many posting here lived in Charlotte in 1996?

I did. I am one of the rare and elusive natives you hear about but never meet.

I did, I was 5/6 at the time

My college grades suffered because of Civ II.

The jukebox! I used to work there!

So glad I'm not the only one who calls One Wachovia Center the Jukebox.

This reminds me when Charlotte was the skyline for the show The IT Crowd.

Our world wonder back then was Heritage, USA

You maybe missed that it was on the original game's cover in 1991.

Is there a Nissan Altima cavalry unit special to the Charlotte city-state civilization?

Civ 3 has the skyline AND an Altima. Just sayin.

Good eye

Wow that’s pretty cool. There’s a gaming YouTuber called LGR and I’m shocked he didn’t mention this in his videos on them since he’s a NC native.

Wow awesome little fact

Damn, I started playing at civ 3. On civ 6 now and I almost always still name a city Charlotte

Thanks for this! I had no idea!
