Yeah, 100%. The cat slipped while running up, and that probably made the cat even angrier. And it's impossible to force a cat to do something they don't want to do. The cat was mad at the dog and wanted to make it known. Blaming that on human intervention makes no sense. People DO post examples of animal abuse on here from time to time, but I don't think this is it.

I'm normally in bed by midnight. If I'm still up between midnight and 1am, my cat will sit close to me and give frequent "looks."

After 1am he starts yelling at me to go to bed.

I have both. Neither is really the jerk. They're just being animals. Puppy likes to splash. Cat does not like the splashing (it might land on him!). Cat corrects the puppy for doing non-cat behavior.

P normal interaction tbh. Owner should have intervened at some point though- probably when the cat was taking too long to back off on the pressure. A few seconds is fine to make sure the lesson sticks, but any more than that and it's an issue.

Also probably bring the pool outside where the dog can splash cat-free.

The puppy is behaving like puppy is supposed to, it's not behaving bad. The cat is behaving like older parent/sibling knowing the puppy must learn boundaries. It appears to be some type of Tabby Scottish Fold. The ears are a fairly distinctive trait of the breed.

It's a bengal (this one is a marble pattern bengal). Originally a mix of regular domestic cat with wild Asian leopard cat to get that exotic look.

Mostly because of the owners. Most dogs would kill cats if they weren’t stopped by owners during the bonding phase I assume.

It just comes down to how they behave in the "wild". Dogs tend to avoid conflict. They're big enough to pose a threat, but they'd prefer not to get injured. So they defuse the situation if they can- especially when the animal angry with them is apart of the "pack".

Cats go batshit. They know they're small, they know they can be killed. So they act aggro as hell to let the other animal know they'll go down swinging. Most large predators don't want to be injured, so they'll decide it isn't worth it. There are videos of cats lunging at bears, cougars, etc. Usually the other animal runs off.

So when a strange dog and cat meet, the dog learns not to mess with the cat. Sometimes through genuine violence, sometimes through soft corrections. Of course it doesn't always work out this way- if introductions aren't carefully managed with the right dog and the right cat, then it can lead to either being seriously injured, or even in one's death. The best combo is a confident, chill cat, and a chill dog. Both are required to listen to corrections.

While the dog was obviously in the wrong, I do think the cat came off a little aggressive. The cat shouldn’t of used claw, however I do respect the dog’s decision to accept he was in the wrong and also to not retaliate. That’s shows me the dog has emotional maturity where as the cat had good intentions, but maybe it could work on communication.
