I wholeheartedly disagree that 2004-2010 was one single era.
I wholeheartedly disagree that 2004-2010 was one single era.
Yeah to me the late 2000s + early 2010s feels more like an era than the mid 2000s + late 2000s
Also tumblr definitely belongs in 2010-2015. A kid made this for sure.
That absence of Smosh on here but Pewdiepie is listed proves that whoever made this list didnāt even get to experience half of this list
For sure, why are twitter and tiktok on the same eras?
Yeah, 2009-2013 is how Iād define it.
Yeah, 2001-2006 would be one era and 2007-2010 would be another, during those early Facebook and iPhone years.
Chad Warden talkin' about that PS Triple
The mans got some points. Final fantasy 7 will go down in history. You can't take away the first final fantasy game from sony.
Mario party? More like pussy ass party
Ain't one blunt, not one 40
I ain't talkin bout that Wii. That Wii? Sheeet, that little controller, man that look like a dildo.
Aight, I ain't tryin' play my games with no deel doe, aight?
Chaaa' Wa'rrrn š
BALLIN'!
That little controller? Baby, that looks like a deel-do
That shit is a nice, slick black that pshhh pshhh like my hair bitch.
I came here to say this. Never realised Chad Warden was so well known. That shit was hilarious!
Some more info
Lol this was a trip down memory lane. I remember how insanely butthurt people got about his videos back in the day. Nobody could figure out if he was a troll or not, and casual internet users didn't even have the word "troll" in their vocabulary back then, it was much easier to trick people at the time. The Chad Warden character was genius.
Then they put that shit to Konata and bam the internet peaked
I remembering seeing that a long time ago but I couldnāt remember who that guy was so I never found it again
Aināt no one wants to talk about the WII?! That thing looks like a DILDO
2000-2004 had YTMND and All Your Base memes. Pretty sure Napster was around that time.
If you really want to go Back to the Beginning, you've got to do Usenet Circa 1993 or so.
Ebaums and Albino Black Sheep
Maddox and the alphabet of manliness
He was so much better when he only did the website. :/
My friends used to print out Maddox and we would sit around the lunch table cracking up. Simpler times.
Albino Black Sheep
I played the shit out of those Shockwave games.
Thanks to an animation on that site I found the band Cake and thatās probably the best gift I got from ABS. Lol
(Or, French Erotic Film. And Fingertips.)
this was the first ever video I watched on the internet via albino black sheep. It was around 2003. The same guy that did this later went on to make Quiznos commercials with his creations the spongmonkey.
It was widely regarded as one of the first 'the internet is leaking' cases. Nothing would feel quite the same until Rick Astley Rick rolled the Macy's ThanksGiving Parade.
Op was born in 2006. They will never understand the glory of ytmnd
That breaks my heart
It breaks my heart you werenāt born in the 1690ās, youāll never appreciate the dank early 18th century memes. š
āItās a trapā was one of the first internet things that had me unable to breathe from laughter
Captain. Jean Picard. Of the USS. Enterprise.
Spooky that Captain Picard popped up in the video I was watching right as I was typing out his name.

Yeah I was gonna say, wheres 1994-2003?
Angelfire/Geocities web pages, rotten.com, early days of eBay....
Frames. Website frames everywhere.
Wasn't it tables back then? I don't think frames came until later.
Honestly, it was so long ago I don't remember. I just remember how proud I was programming html on my geocities website.
I vaguely remember frames, around the time AOL was sending free floppies. I was pretty young, like five or six, so I donāt remember the context 100%. It want to say it was like 1998 (based on the house I remember) and the program could have been Dreamweaver.
Trumpet Winsock, Netscape Navigator, WS_FTP32, FortƩ Agent, Quake, mIRC, ICQ, RealPlayer.
Mid to late '90s was dialing into BBSes. Telnet, FTP, newsgroups, etc.
Neopets!
ChunkyChuck will be forever abandoned as I lost the email I used to register my account and can't remember my password.
mannn i use to get off school and go spin that wheel in neopets for that free stuff lol... time flies
I have such fond memories of that era, circa 7th grade. Used to haul my family computer (a wonderfully mediocre Hewlett Packard Pavilion w/ Windows ME) over to my cousin's every weekend to LAN Battlefield 1942 (Desert Combat mod) and Diablo 2. Somehow I'm already drawing blanks on what other games we played, but there was an assortment, and looking back on them returns me to that feeling of 2am, quietly grabbing cans of Pepsi and a bowl of Doritos from his kitchen at 3:30am. Once we'd wear ourselves out, we'd switch over to Newgrounds or Albinoblacksheep and peruse the fine amateur animations, or download viruses on Kazaa/Limewire. I still maintain that the constant onslaught of malware is the sole reason I became so good with computers today.
So many LAN party memories came flooding back to me with this comment. F.E.A.R and CS:S were high school staples for me.
Opening a low res picture of some tits and it loading one row of pixels at a time.
I miss the glory days of YTMND. Connery, giefcopter, butt racing, Katrina.....
Neopets and AOL
You know what else it's missing? O RLY owl. Those were pretty big and before rage comics.
Donāt forget HomeStar Runner
I feel like this was made by an older zoomer. They missed runescape, neopets, yahoo music videos, homestar runner, coolmath.com (for lemonade stand of course), addicting games, and a bunch of other cool shit from the earliest days of children on the internet
No, if you want to go back to the beginning it was on a BBS in the 80's.
Iāve gone back to the beginning a few times
Don't forget about geocities. My page is still under construction.
Stanford user pages, Dancesafe's precursor, Usenet, Lycos and not a whole lot else. That's what the internet was from 93-96.
hey yes man
Thanks Yes Man
Where's the 90s? The wild west of the internet
Just needs some mIRC, ICQ, QuickTime movies, early Newgrounds/Sumo, dialup modems, Geocities & Angelfire, and maybe.. a tiny picture of an AOL disc.
Edit: And Netscape. Gotta give Netscape a shout.
MSN messenger, too.
And AIM, aol instant messenger, we used that at my first job. The whole company was on AIM to IM each other about work stuff.
I can already hear that door audio opening and immediately shutting lol
Making emo song lyrics your "status" on any type of instant messenger
And gamespy arcade
Dude, yall needed Trillian! Combined all the other messengers into one program.
and RealPlayer
You mean?: And RealPl... buffering.... buffering.... buffering....
And Winamp.
WinAmp stretches from the 90s to current day. It still whips the llama's ass
And Napster
I think My Name Is was my first Napster download. Only took like 2 weeks
My brother always used Limewire
He sounds cool
I still have Napster lol
I'm embarrassed to say I had an ICP fan page on Angelfire.
I'm proud of you for admitting that. It took a lot of strength.
How many times...
My buddy had an Aqua fanpage. Rest easy, friend.
Where's my Quake at?
Yeah... gotta add Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake... maybe Hexen..
Bert is Evil and Ninja Burger sites..
Unreal Tournament!!!!!!!!

Omg Bert is Evil. I might cry bc nostalgia
There with Descent, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and Duke Nukem 3D.
I called it "Decent" for a little bit when I was a young lad.
Bringing the serious games here. Did you ever play Maniac Mansion? It was an Easter egg inside DOTT.
Iām going to one-up you here. We had Maniac Mansion for the Commodore 64.
I did have a commodore 64, but didn't have Maniac Mansion on it. It's such a long time ago I'm struggling to remember, had a racing game & something I think it was called Ghosts and Goblins... the music in it was amazing. But I was very little so I'm struggling to remember more details.
How about telneting into a MUD?
Ah, my people have arrived.
And reading through a bbs looking for porn and Warez. And downloading half a playboy pic from a chat room
I downloaded the leaked quake alpha from irc. I spent like two hours looking at a torch on a wall while on LSD thinking this is the pinnacle of all video game creation.
Q3 arena ftw
...don't forget that CG dancing baby.
Seriously. How could anyone forget the dancing baby?

Anybody else hang out on "The Palace" ? I had a sweet avatar with wings. Very edgy.

Elf bowling, frog in a blender, and hamper in a microwave. Star Wars rap and the farting televangelist. Juno, and NetZero. Excite-Xtreme and the Apple doomsday clock.
You fuckin forgot limewire and a family of viruses you got with it.
Dunno who remembers the program Trillian, but they only stopped being able to connect to ICQ as of April 2019.
Realplayer and DivX (then later, XviD)
Don't forget The Zone and Kali.
Geocities.. lolol
Forgot Flash.
Ask Jeeves!
What about freewebs? I miss it.
The fact that is missing plus I don't get half the references in this one probably means OP was born post 2000.
Big giveaway was how the latter half of the 2000s was missing the time when the Internet was dominated by The 300 memes. Also Leroy Jenkins, Cake is a Lie, Leave Britney Alone, Maddox, Shoop da Whoop, Chuck Norris facts and the genesis of YouTube Poop were unmissable in the mid-late 2000s. Also the time when everyone said "pwned" and ROFLcopters were forum mainstays. Hell, just the entire concept of forums back then.
I would argue Slenderman and Rage Comics only took off around 2011 onwards.

How has no one mentioned Homestar Runner?
Also from Film Cow, Charlie the Unicorn, which has recently been concluded.
Shoop da whoop!
Also, Salad Fingers
Yeah this starter pack really missing out on the lower level details that made that time period brilliant
Someone remake this trash correctly please.
man, I miss those times
Remember when new lingo or slang was being born in Reddit threads?

I was born in ā97 and I feel like I was a part of every block except the last one. But I am only 24, so⦠Young enough to recognize the newest trends but old enough not to care about most of them.
wait til you are in your 30s and this meme leaves off the 00s.
O hell yeah. This is Era of Internet for little kids. Including the 2018-2020, there's so much shit that only little kids would give a fuck about in it.
Correctamundo! (For reference, I was born in 2006.)
My car is older then you.
I have a YouTube account nearly his age lol
My ebay account has been legal drinking age for 3 years.
My Reddit account is almost as old as OP.
Yeah my original reddit account it's currently going to through puberty.
[deleted]
I think metric years
eBay member since 1998
I've serviced vehicles with tires older than OP
Iām currently wearing a t-shirt from a summer sports camp I went to in 1997
Same
My trousers are older than him.
Yeah we can tell lol
Fuck me, I'm old as shit lol. I had a cousin born then
I have children older than OP
I could have a son that age and it wouldn't even be weird, pretty sure people I went to high school with have kids older
What does your cousin have to do with it?
Wow, literally a child
Same age as my younger sister. I definitely ain't much older but you definitely missed flash games and lots of other stuff. Maybe even worth polling but atleast some topics are continous threads through all stages that drop off or evolve. Would be nice too see that as a separate block.
My Gmail account is older than you are.
Missed the entire AOL period, yet still included AIM chat icon. Wild.
Internet was a different experience in the 90s... even y2k was a blip on the map of challenges.
My Facebook account is about your age.
Yikes.
Wtf. Being 15 is yikes? Growing up is yikes? Reddit...
More like not even being alive for a time period of the internet but thinking you can accurately and confidently describe it. That's the yikes.
Disgusting
I was thinking the same. Peek internet for me was 2002-2010. Nothing can bring back the excitement of Windows XP, waiting 45 minutes for a Lesko flash video, playing C&C Tiberian Sun online, getting the perfect WinAmp skin, oh and seeing all those unfiltered, traumatizing, videos and photos from variousāmostly now defunctāwebsites.
Probably 1997-2001 tbh, given how they started at 2004.
Biggest clue for me was seeing Fortnite in a previous āeraā.
Chat rooms. Using altavista or ask jeeves. Or the "you've got mail" voice. Sending emails to friends!
lol I got the "you've got mail" voice as my notification ringtone
I had email long before I had friends. Still have an email...still no friends
Late 90's to early 2000's was some crazy times. I loved it.
I doubt OP was even alive for any of the 90s
OP commented they were born in 2006, so they were barely alive for the 00s as well.
[deleted]
Thatās too bad. You missed out on the chat room era. Thatās actually how I learned to type as a kid.
I don't think I missed out on much seeing as I was pretty much a toddler before 2006.
2006 I was in grad school... damn I'm old.
same
I suppose this means we're officially old. I'm going to go to go browse the internet on Netscape navigator and cry. After I do that, I'm going to make some Tang, fire up DOOM 2 and play until my eyes bleed.
While you are there bring back some vintage Surge.
My people.
I have memories of my dad showing off Doom 2 when it released. He, my brother, and I all used to play together on LAN using laptops he got from work. He worked in IT so we've always had technology before it was commonplace. I think I was around 5.
My dad was in IT as well. He random computer stuff and cables...zip drives before they came out.....a file cabinet for floppy disks...3 computers (one or more partially disassembled), a giant laptop...
The age of alt.net groups and Frames?
So many frames
Dude I totally had a frame laden angelfire page about a video game full of shitty links, marquees, counters, āweb crawlersā
I had a Chrono Trigger site. Did both a frames and non-frames version. Guest book, visitor count, whatever it was called when you were in a group with other similar sites and you had that thing you could go to the next one or a random site. Even got pretty far on a walkthrough before I quit since there were already some good ones out there.
did it have gifs everywhere?
Yahoo games (played a lot of pool), net zero, niche forums with like 10 users.
Porn was a slowly loading photo. One at a time.
And we didn't have none of that incognito mode bs, just a good ol fashion history and cookie delete
Anyone remember Prodigy? lmao. That was my first taste of the internet back in the day. 28k dial ups, AOL, chat rooms, the works.
I still remember it taking an entire day to download the demo for Doom, which was like 2mb. Hell, if someone called you on the telephone, it would fuck up your whole download or disrupt your service lmao.
Mid 90s into around 2003 was what I see as the "Wild West" era of the internet. Browser security was such shit you could get a virus just by visiting a webpage. Communities were a lot smaller and usually forums for whatever the webpage was about. Also having to dial-in just felt different than now where it's always on/always present. That loose and crazy place eventually got colonized by corporations centralizing power.
Meme maker probably didn't get to experience the 90's in that way.
OPs big brother wasn't old enough to use the computer back then, he wouldn't know
The internet was invented in 2004, obviously.
90s i feel was like the colonial/ frontier times. Not a whole lot there and people were just starting to make the journey to the internet
Napster, BearShare, Limewire, AOL chatrooms, ebaumsworld, rotten.com
op is too young, probably wasn't born yet
The internet started at 2004 apparently
IT REALLY WHIPS THE LLAMA'S ASS
We are old now...
Considering most redditors weren't even alive pre 2004, it's probably best that the 90s were left out.
Really? I thought the average age was much older.
The 90s was red dead before blackwater, 2004 to 10 was red dead 2 and 10 to 15 was red dead one. Enough of the old internet around to feel like you're still there but enough new to know that the wild west has come to an end. This is for the zooms
I still remember the power I felt the first time I was granted a mod hammer in an MSN chatroom.
I miss it so much. So, so much.
I love new grounds but I was done with it by 2000.
Most of the people here werenāt even born
Chat rooms and LimeWire. Those were the days. Early 90s were interesting too. Downloading boobie pictures on a dialup modem and watching as they slowly revealed themselves from top to bottom. Downloading a porn video was unheard of. It would take an hour for a 30 second movie trailer.
Op wasn't alive
Snood?!
OP wasn't alive then.
āThis is the [subject] webring. Click here for the next pageā
If it happened before OP was born, it doesn't matter.
I'd say the wild west was 99-2004 when the internet was more accessible but unrestricted. early 90's was fucking usenet nerds, 2600 types, and napster. with a shake of age of empires, star trek armada, and star craft, with counter strike, half life, tribes, quake and UT. it was a simpler time where people shared information and gamed.
Fark was the shit
Or even the 2000 - 2004 part.
OP clearly wasn't around for Web 1.0
Tumblr should be in the 2010 to 2015 era.
I feel like it was really a thing in 2009
tbf it's still alive and kicking
yeah, but the tumblr everyone remembers (like this pack is trying to capture) was a 2008-2015 thing. The superwholock-emo-anime-ao3-clusterfrick that we all know and ~~love like~~ tolerated. After '14 with dashcon and various fandom crashes, generally the main tumblr userbase getting a good look at how (subjectively) cringey it was, it kinda backpedalled, and generally most current tumblr users are pretty lowkey.
What banning porn does to a website
Whether it's officially allowed or not, porn has been back on tumblr for years.
Whether it's officially allowed or not, porn has been back on tumblr for years.
But it never fully recovered to the glory of what it once was.
The fancams are too powerful
really? what happened to the ban?
I don't know, but as a frequent consumer of a pretty niche class of porn which is primarily represented on tumblr (not furry), I can assure you it was gone for a few months and rapidly came back and the censoring stopped happening.
Guess they figured out that what your advertisers feel doesn't mean shit if your userbase leaves
Is all porn allowed again?
Nope, people are just finding technical loopholes to reblog and post it. But if you had a blog that had adult content on it, your blog gets semi-shadowbanned (that's the only way I can describe it). You get your avatar taken away, and your banner is taken away, too. You also can't search your blog for whatever reason. Some people have said they can't even reply to messages or other posts. You can still post to your blog, though. People just won't be able to see the porn or stuff the algorithm thinks is porn. Your blog is essentially put into a kind of persona non grata like state.
Aside from what the other poster said, there are plenty of porn bots on the site. On average, I get one porn bot follower per day, all of them with 1-2 posts that contain links to spammy (possibly phishing) sites.
Yeah, that too. But even that happened in '18.
Fandoms have just now moved to other sites like twitter. There are still people using and posting on the site, but for most fandoms there's not really a community.
Sounds fair.
The tumblr where you would look up a show you like and got bombarded with the most r34 youāve seen since f&f2
So is 4chan, but it looks like it died in 2010 according to this
I fucking wish 4Chan died in 2010, along with everyone who uses it.
Why? It's literally just porn and endless dumb threads about literally anything.
I went to /mu/ to talk about my favorite albums once and the first post I saw was how black people could never make as musically complex or dense music as white people.
Racist shit is all over the website, not sure what 4chan you're seeing.
Devolved into a nazi cesspit since gamergate. Quite frankly nuking the roach nest would do humanity quite a bit of good.
It was a nazi cesspit long before gamergate though.
Clearly you went on /pol/ once and assumed that represented the entire website, and never checked another board after that.
I've been on tons of other boards. Turns out when your website is the biggest disease on the internet the cancer tends to spread around.
/b/ died
/pol/ should be 2015-2018
Yeah, I'd say it lasted long enough to get into the 2015-2018 section, if barely.
Mainly by virtue of /pol/ having latched itself onto Trump - far as I know, the rest of the boards lost most/all of their influence after Gamergate.
Tf2 is also alive and kicking. And screaming. They donāt want to be forgotten. They are teetering on the edge, and if they fall, they donāt come back. Valve will not save them.
I fucking hate all the Tumblr users who came to reddit, completely changed the site
And Deviantart
Why no 90s? And Netscape?
OP was probably born in 2004 and doesn't know anything about the internet before then
Yeah that would explain why the first panel is the longest stretch of time and so vague. So much stuff happened between 2004-2010. I feel like 2000-2005 could be the first one which was sort of the infancy of post-dotcom bubble sites like Google and when Facebook was still college email only, internet forums, chat rooms and P2P downloading, early meme sites like ytmnd, salad fingers, xanga...
In my experience
1998-2001 was AOL, forum era
2002-2005 humor and pre-youtube video sites, xanga and myspace
2006-2008 4chan, digg, reddit, YouTube, web 2.0, early "cool" Facebook
2009-2011 Facebook becoming terrible but mandatory, twitter becoming relevant, phone apps
It's honestly been a blur since then.
Don't forget BBS in early 90s.
BBS was a thing even in the late 80s
Yeah true. But maby not as popular as a few years later.
True but home computing in general was more expensive back then
It was around 96-97 when home PCs really took off. It was popular at the time to order Gateway computers through the mail and they came in a big box with cow prints all over it.
And they still came with dial-up modems, even though high speed was starting to pop up here and there. I left for college in 1996 and my first day of school I had to figure out how to take my brand new computer apart and install the hardware that they gave me to be able to use the school's high-speed connection. The school provided the hardware because no one's computer came with anything except a modem at that time. It was such an amazing thing to have an always-connected computer.
I would say at home PCs were pretty common earlier though. I started working for Software ETC in high school in 94 and tons of people had home PCs at that point. Gaming was already becoming a big thing.
Gateways were the shit
Big Beautiful Step-sister
2002-2005 was a battlefield of companies and old internet identity during an identity crisis of .com failures. It was the interesting period of ISPs cooperating with record company lawyer threats and search tools making browser bookmarks far less important.
The past 10 years of social media monsters seem dull in comparison. Smart phones pushed us past WAP optimized web pages and enabled more instant gratification web app functions, but thatās the best I can think of.
The heyday of Runescape
I was born in '96 and I only remember internet being slow and expensive AF
This would be much more accurate than what op posted.
Maybe Iām just old.
SomethingAwful, fark and slashdot walked in 99-05 so 4chan, digg and reddit could run
I think Yahoo was way to big to be left out of your timeline.
It's still so weird to hear of people actually using AOL. I'll always remember them as that company that just randomly mailed CDs to everyone for no reason.
I would also add in the 2002-2005 SLSK p2p trading app/chatroom. That was huge for me at that time. I actually made friends in that program from different countries that I am still friends with, even though everyone was so brutally mean to each other.
Put homestar runner in there or we're gonna have a problem
I was watching a Space Engineers stream today and the number of people who caught a "The Cheat is grounded" reference was pure validation. Next up is Magical Trevor.
Yeah, I was thinking about it last night and I did miss a lot of stuff. Homestar runner, SLSK, livejournal, netzero, MSN Messenger, Starcraft, Halo, Attack of the Show, couchsurfing.com...
The 00s need RuneScape and Halo CE and Quake.
Yeah Halo was a big one for me and my friends back in the day. I waited at Best Buy and bought Halo 2 steelbook edition at midnight haha. The Orange Box was a huge one for me around then too.
Quake is from the '90s. I used to stay after school my freshman and sophomore years to play networked Quake and Team Fortress in the computer lab starting in '96. Counterstrike was a mod for Half Life my first year of college in '00.
2000-2005
when broadband became mainstream
Yeah, true. I was on dial-up until I went to college in 2006. Before that, I would have to download all night to get half of an album, and then download the rest the next day. But sometimes the phone line would get interrupted and corrupt the download so you would have 1.5 songs haha. Then broadband came along and I was downloading TBs of music.
And the fact they put fucking slender man into the earliest category lmaoo
I know itās just me missing my youth but man ytmnd, newgrounds and hotpie were the shit
jeeves
missing the crown jewel of early '00s internet.. bonzi buddy
also, where the fuck are the 'best viewed with...' badges?
Napster
Yes this is clearly like a 20 year olds vision of the internet since circa his birth. Oof. Thereās a lot youāre missing from this pack champ
OP is 15
[deleted]
He said it elsewhere in the thread. Good guess
That would explain mashing AIM with limewire with early reddit memes. Which is like 15 years, all before their actual memory..
and of course the total ignoring of anything before \~2000, which, surprise, is more than half of internet history.
Believe it or not there are people who were born long after you were
Believe it or not the internet existed long before 2004. As others already pointed out, OPās post is missing about half of the internetās history and is hyper-focused on younger interests. This would be like making a post called āEras Of the United Statesā and it begins with World War II, 1939 through 1999 is lumped into a single era, and 2000-2021 is split into 6 eras.
You should pick something else to be smug about
You donāt gotta be smug to recognize this is missing like half the internet era and is hyper focused on younger interests⦠shouldnāt you be saying ok boomer or something like that
[deleted]
getting bad work called out on the internet is pretty old. i think it even goes back to the pre-historic times of 2003.
āOof, this kids meme isnāt fully comprehensive, champā sounds pretty smug to me
it isn't that it isn't comprehensive, it is just lacking the period that made the internet the internet. Everything else mentioned is superficial.
it's the "consumer" variant of internet history, circa 2008 onwards... which misses a lot of the real value of the internet, not to mention total disregard to what created the walmart of internet this montage is presenting
i bet when a teacher gave you a D on a paper and said "nice try, but you didnt read the book" ... you said "giving me a D? pretty smug of you"
I don't think it's a "being smug" thing, it's like seeing a post titled "Eras of the United States" and it starts with World War 2 with no mention of anything beforehand.
it's like seeing a post titled "Eras of the United States" and it starts with World War 2 with no mention of anything beforehand.
No need to bring our history textbooks into this.
That's wrong too, since the textbooks don't have anything after wwii either.
Thatās not true. We got up to the start of the Korean War. The Soviets still hold the North, right?
But how would they know what the internet was like in the year they were born? Youāre more likely to remember sucking your mamaās titty than looking at https//:WWW.YouTube.Com/try-not-to-laugh-95.
Searching on the Google
Or
Use a different title, skip the first era, there are ways
Also this feels like the internet if you were a teenage boy in those eras.
He commented he was born in 2006. Makes me feel better cause I didn't even recognize 1/3 of the stuff in the first panel.
ya hence coppa in the most recent one despite being a tool since its existence designed to trick that annoying 12 year old in an irc chat into getting themselves banned
nobody knows about that and im from mid 90s
That would explain why tumblr's in the late 2010's bloc
Tumblr's been around since like 2008 and all the big events everyone refers to as important history about like dashcon or superwholock or mishapocalypse are all early-mid 2010s
Gen X, forgotten era... Whatevs...
Wher silkroad?
I thought it still is a thing (revived at least)
This is like "The Eras of Mario Bros. Games" and it starts with Mario 64.
OP needs to learn about the Wild West days of 90's internet. It was fresh as fuck.
Where my usenet homies at?
Feedo.net starterpack?!
There was barely anything there
What do you mean?
I mean we didnt have flash java or CSS, most 90s websites were entirely static and uninteresting and plain text. L33T Sp34K AND ASCII was a byproduct of not being able to display pictures or video. So really There wasnt much besides email, netscape, and MUDS. Oh amd you were actually supposed to buy time on the internet hence the joke about AOL disks
And for the dumbass reddit experts downvoting me please keep in mind I was literally there to see it firsthand while y'all were still in your dads balls and probably only vaguely remember the early 2000s era at best
[deleted]
Web rings were the shit.
We had goatse and meatspin, that was enough for us back then.
you forgot Lemonparty
Oh wow, how could I forget. Probably means even more to me now that I'm an old man.

Stick death. Though that might be late 90s.
Since when was slenderman pre-2010?
Created in 2009. Cuts it close, but it counts.
Created in 2009 okay but I would definitely not call it a pre-2010 thing culture wise. It wasnt really a part of internet culture for most people till the Slender game came out in 2012 and LPers were obsessed with survival horror.
Second this, 2012 was literally the year Slendy blew up cause of the game and its simple but effective system of jumpscares combined with increasingly creepy ambience, it doesnāt really belong in pre-2010
If that's the criteria then TF2 is placed incorrectly - released in 07
Slenderman and TF2 should switch places.
Iād argue the criteria should be āWhen it was popularā
Way too much stuff in the 00s is stuff that āFirst appeared in 2009.ā
Should have more Desu, Mudkips, Longcats, Demotivational Posters, etc.
Slenderman was 100% a Early to Mid-10s phenomena.
Call of Duty as well. CoD 4 was a 2007 release and started it's mainstream popularity.
And still going strong better than ever cries
But then Vine should be 2010-2015 with that logic
Minecraft was made in 2009 as well.
Fair, I only remember marblehornets getting popular in 2011 sort of time, then the game which made it popular was waaay after
Slenderman and Ray William Johnson should swap places...
Am I the only one who remembers Dr Octagonapus?
Surprising that call of duty is shown for 2010-2015. It could fit in any of these because cod1-3 were on pc in 2004-2010. It was also probably the biggest thing in gaming last year bc of warzone.
Na itās about right. Thatās when COD was probably the biggest game on the internet/youtube. Like there was YouTube channels that strictly played COD.
I'd argue 2008-2014 is a better range. People dont understand how huge a phenomenon COD4 was for gaming back then, it brought so many people into FPSs, same with Halo 2 and BF3
Yeah COD4 was fucking huge back then, I literally got a 360 to play it. It was all everyone did in high school around 2008-2011. WaW and MWF2 as well. Nazi Zombies was mindblowingly fun
It was the unlocks / loadouts and calling card customization I swear. That progression grind plus grade A mechanics and maps. I'm not the biggest cod fan but CoD4 - Black Ops (arguably WaW) is arguably one of the greatest FPS dynasties of all time. If you weren't there for it it's hard to describe just how huge it was.
I also loved how gory WaW was. Like it blew my mind seeing that much carnage, very thrilling. Yeah itās a āyouād have to be thereā moment. I lost interest in online play around 2012. Started back for a period with Shadows of Evil though, the zombie portion of BO3. I love Bioshock and it honestly felt like some Lovecraft Bioshock zombie extravaganza. I still play that map by myself lol
Yup. Those 3 CoD games are what you did in your free time from 2007 to 2010. MW, WaW, and MW2. I used to get out of class and fire it up. Played with my brother, played with my friends back home, played with my friends at school, played with my dad. Sometimes all at once.
There was always someone you knew who was down to play CoD when you wanted to play it.
Definitely with you on this one. COD was everywhere 2008-2014. It started ādying outā on COD Ghosts ish where it wasnāt considered the new and trendy cool game by practically everyone in the block. That is also when Minecraft, Roblox, and all these sandbox style games started taking over. That lasted till PUBG hit the scene with battle royale years later.
Documentaries could be written about how COD4 and Halo 1/2 revolutionized the Western gaming market. They probably already exist.
Thatās the problem with trying to define eras using these as markers; weāre biased towards the time that we consider the definitive era.
Case in point: Wolfenstein and Doom. Depending on who you ask, the defining era for both was either the early 90s or the mid-2010s.
Alternatively, which game defined multiplayer first-person shooters before Halo: Quake or GoldenEye 007? Quake was following in Doomās footsteps by letting you play over the internet, but Nintendoās reach far exceeded that of PC game developers, meaning GoldenEye introduced more people to the genre.
I remember it taking FOREVER to get into a match after xmas when COD4 came out on Xbox. I donāt think they could handle the traffic
Doom brought brought more people into FPSs.
Dozens of career youtubers got started making MW2 K!llstreak videos that are still around today making bank...
Pewdiepie started off as a black ops 1 commentator. Few understand this
Watching Ali A because he was literally the only guy who seemed to be able to do the zombies easter eggs back in the day
Why do people always act like LoL isn't or hasn't been the biggest game since like 1 year after it's release?
Because it's not.
How is it not again? LoL subreddit is bigger than all the call of duty ones combined and that's only in NA. It's consistently top on twitch outside of Fortnite's flash
I'm looking at twitch right now and the biggest LoL streamer has 5.7k viewers. Apex Legends has 7.4k, Dota 2 has 22k. You're just plain wrong. League of Legends tournaments don't garner even close to the attention Dota 2 tournaments do, by both viewers and prize money.
League of legends is a shitty copycat of Dota 2 and that's all it will ever be. Saying this as someone with thousands of hours in both games.
Prize pool you are right, Dota 2 has higher. Dota 2 Subreddit 1/6th the subs. LoL had 74 million concurrent viewers this worlds, Dota had like 1.6 million.
LoL is currently 3rd in viewership on Twitch, behind the new Poke'mon and new Halo.
https://twitchtracker.com/games
You're totally correct and I was wrong. I still think LoL is a dookie game though.
Wow mad respect my dude, and yea it's definitely not for everyone. Have a great night!
I'd argue defense of the ancients classic custom map from wc3 is more iconic and huge
I mean i guess that's what launched the most popular game in the world yes
Infinite warfare deserves a spot on it's own in 2015 - 2018
Here for CS in 2000
I donāt think they put CS or Half Life up there at all. Frankly, itās odd not to see WoW up there, too.
Think itās because of modern warfare 2-3
2009 was the only year it outsold a cod from 2010-2015
lmao I'm watching red vs blue as I'm reading this
Of everything on here, that was the one that gave me the biggest wave of nostalgia.
Luckily for me, Iām reminded every time I jump on Reddit :)
Happy Tree Friends gave me flashbacks.
Never before had my elementary school self seen such shit before.

I might toss Happy Tree Friends in there too though that could be a little earlier than 2004.
Isn't that middle character from HTF?
It is and I completely missed it.
Also where is Ugandan Knuckles
God I'm glad that meme died, it was insufferable.

Shining, shimmering, splendid

I unironically love Ugandan Knuckles. A fine wine, if you will.
An acquired taste.
On the other hand I loved it. VR chat videos were the peak of that era
I thought it was hilarious at the time, but then again I was 14 and I didn't have to sit through it.
nobody had to sit through it

I miss the lime wire days. Nothing like taking the educated guess that the song you wanted would be a real song, porn, a different song, or just Computer aids...69% of the time it was aids.
I'm going to say this again: I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky. I never told anybody to lie, not a single time; never. These allegations are false. And I need to go back to work for the American people.
YouTube should be in all of them
We would be watching it decay with each panel.
The nature of youtube's place on the internet has changed considerably. 10 years ago it was memes out the ass and the most popular videos were things like chocolate rain or some kid crying over his brother biting his finger. The focus was very much on specific videos. These days, it's very much more focused on content creators.
In a way it is on every panel.
I refuse to accept that people make NFTs a thing
Stop buying into this shit its so fucking dumb. The art sucks ass too.
The best explanation of NFTs, from TikTok:
It's something that you have, but it's imaginary. You don't really have it. You're just pretending that you do. And you pay a lot of money to pretend that you have something. And it's really because you're now the only person allowed to pretend that you have it. No one else is allowed to pretend now. So you don't want them to. And that's why you pay money. To pretend that you own something. But you don't really.
Huh, just like the prices people pay for abstract art! I've seen some paintings in local art stores that look like a 5 year old made them, being sold for thousands of dollars. It's all "Emperor's New Clothes".
A lot of that is tax evasion or money laundering. But even then, at least they physically own the item.
The people who buy NFTs are the idiots. The people who make them are fucking geniuses. They're exploiting literally THE most lucrative group of people on the planet: idiots who buy shit that has buzz words attached to it. If these NFTs were just being advertised as "average .jpgs" no one would be buying them, period. But say that "They are all a little special and they're all different" and you'll have every rich Californian idiot fighting each other with piles of money to see who can get to them. And you're the one profiting. With such little effort, just changing the colors of a single image template. Fucking genius.
Probably 80% of NFT sales are people selling them to themselves on the sly to make the value seem higher.
We are going to look back at now as one of the stupidest times in history.
That is so sweet that you think the future isn't going to be even stupider.
It's the "Y2K scare" of the 2020's. Everybody looks back at that time now and thinks just how dumb people were, thinking society would collapse with the year 2000 changeover. In a few years, we'll be laughing at how dumb people were thinking that these NFT's had any REAL value.
Donāt you see how that is detrimental to our society though? To incentivize preying on the foolish or vulnerable is the worst feature of capitalism.
āoh no, poor RichCalifornianchan Iām so sorry that capitalism exploited you. Rich Californian these guys on Reddit were making fun of you buying NFTa and I made a stupid comment about how itās preying on you to try and gain sympathy from the working class for the ultra rich.ā -You
Who gives a fuck about the rich.
We all should when they are actively working to make life as shitty as possible for as many people as possible
Yeah so sell them some internet pixels and make money yourself. Who cares if they are foolish or vulnerable. If a millionaire wants to spends 10k on a pixel PNG of a goat fucking a demon, ill gladly take his 10k.
Who knew committing an art heist was so easy?
I so aggressively and passionately hate that people donāt understand that an NFT is not a digital picture. An NFT is a piece of code on a distributed blockchain demonstrating digital ownership ofā¦anything. Drivers license, land contract, a digital booklet, concert ticket, medieval sword in a video game, and YES a jpeg are all forms of what we call a Non Fungible Token.
You probably donāt hate the idea of all those things as NFTs I would guess.
But yes the JPEG NFT marketplace is an embarrassing joke.
I'm trying to understand...
An NFT is a piece of code on a distributed blockchain demonstrating digital ownership ofā¦anything. Drivers license, land contract, a digital booklet, concert ticket, medieval sword in a video game, and YES a jpeg are all forms of what we call a Non Fungible Token.
Why is it being talked about so much lately? Why did it become a thing just now? It doesn't take a genius to come up with this idea..? Especially when you mention that jpegs are NFTs. A blockchain is a database. Who owns these..?
I am a proud NFT enthusiast and am really disappointed you feel this way. I guess itās just cool to hate them š¤¦āāļø
You clearly have money to throw away, please donate it to cancer research or something useful instead of destroying the environment to get a glorified yugioh card that you don't even really own and about which only the five other brainwashed california tech bros around you give a fuck
First two eras are based and the ones I remember most fondly, I put them up on an equal level though I have a very slight personal bias to the former (only very slightly tough, the 2010-2015 era mostly gets points docked off for 2015 itself since that's when the political shit and shitty memes started to become more common).
Third era was a mixed bag but the Harambe and Pepe memes feel like the last time the Internet had any resemblance to itself.
The foruth era I have no idea WTF is going on anymore. Everything seems to trend super rapidly these days and fade out just as quickly so I can't keep up with shit anymore.
For the fourth era, everything becoming political killed the internet. The internet used to be silly and fun.
Damn i miss the newgrounds era. Although i feel slenderman was more 2010-2015
If you are going by when it peaked, then yes...
Going by when it started slenderman was 2009, I was active on the something awful forums at the time and even participated in the photoshop thread that spawned the meme (and quickly got taken over by it)
I mean Newgrounds is having another golden era, partially because of FNF, Partially from that porn ban on Tumblr. And not to mention Derpixion. Go login to Newgrounds again because it's actually still a shit ton of fun.
Oh i know. Its great!
Hazbin is kinda...dead though...for now. A24 was supposed to help with a fully funded series but Vizzie's been silent.
It's more like Helluva Boss now
I guess they are trying to finish all season 1 episodes Also, vivzie cannot talk anything about that cause the contract she signed
They're supposed to announce something later this year I guess. The Hazbin Hotel Twitter account recently got replaced by an official A24 account that instantly got the verified tick, so it's definitely happening and I'm pretty optimistic that Vivzie won't drop the show in which she has been working on for years.
I miss the days of everything being on anonymous forums ngl.
well that's why we are on reddit
I wholeheartedly agree, whores-are-nice69
thanks , LocalHealer !

Most forums are still kind of like that, just modernized.
Those still existā¦
And disappearing at an exponential rate each year as corpos cut the internet into pieces
I regret living through, experiencing, and being influenced by, all of these.
Yes all of your humour, personality, and ability to let yourself stop and accept something has dwindled severely and basically most people have completely changed who they are because of the internet. It's ridiculous and people are just copies of others.
MLP:FIM really did feel like a cornerstone of 2010-2015 Internet culture. Bronies really set the tone and bar for 2010s fandoms. Even if you werenāt a brony, if you were online, you knew about them and had an opinion on it
Wait why spamton? Is spamton popular?

Yeah, SinƤtuubapaska peaked in 2010
1995-2003 is arguably the most important and most fun the internet ever was.
i was just going to say, ffs i'm so old that my first era of internet isn't even on here?! hello, aol chat rooms, geocities, angelfire? my god.
geocities
Area51 neighborhood represent!
Yeah that "oof I'm old" feeling hit hard.
I remember when MOST of the internet was full of people born 1979-1992. It was before the boomers learned how to use the facebook or the gmail, Gen X started having kids, and it was a millennial sandbox. Is that not the case anymore? Are we no longer the young rapscallions that compose the internet?
Born in 92 and I started using the Internet around 98 or so. But as the 2000s progressed I remember how fun and decentralised everything was. There were niche websites, chat rooms, forums and it was so much fun connecting with people across the world. I remember I set so many different time zones on my iPod from across the world and wondered what my Internet acquaintances were up to.
It makes me a little sad how only a few websites host or navigate to most of the content now. It feels like the innocence, novelty and fun of it has been lost. Idk if itās because I grew up or if itās because the Internet has changed so much.
I remember when my neighbour told me "you know, AOL isn't even really the internet, it's just a small part of it." and it was all downhill from there.
18/f/cali
My first experience of the internet was 1995-96. I was amazed that you could check the local weather instantly without having to wait for the eights on the hour!
I was checking local weather instantly even earlier. You'd actually step outside and look into the sky. "Does it look like rain? Nope, guess not". Was about as accurate as any weather app today IME.
And then you had those old people that could tell you what the weather was gonna do because of some aches in their legs or something.
Tell me... what was it like
I didn't get on the internet until like 2006
Internet was a lot more distributed without any gatekeepers. Because social media wasn't a thing, nobody really lived on the internet; perhaps the only near equivalent would have been a Geocities or Angelfire page.
Because the internet wasn't a lived-in experience, everyone who was on the internet that contributed it in any way, especially from like 1995-1998 or so were amateurs. Barely anybody was a 'professional' web developer, so it all came away feeling really unpolished and gnarly. Much of that was also because with dial-up, things needed to be simple in order to actually load.
There weren't established aggregators either where people gathered, except for maybe chat rooms but even then they were comparatively small affairs. Nothing was centralized, and forums and chat rooms were their own kingdoms.
Because the internet hadn't had been really commercialized, it was a wild west out there. A company might have helped you got online, but that was it. Big Tech wasn't a thing. Nobody really had an outsized role on the internet to throw their weight around, and nobody played cop. It felt like there were no rules and everything was fair game, for both good and bad. For people who before then were used to having very limited options to find information and connect with people, my god it's hard to describe how much you wanted to go discover. Because if that, you could easily find all kinds of messed up stuff. If you remember all the gross subreddits like r/spacedicks, there was a lot of stuff like that which you could find all over.
I still don't think i've ever felt that level of 'wow' moment where I knew that This. Changes. Everything. The closest might have been when I really first got on Reddit 10 years ago or so where it felt much much more open.
[deleted]
I just hate how I can't trust anything on the internet these days. Everything is about making money.
I think it feels that way because a much larger and less select portion of society is on the internet today. And it feels less deliberate because people are literally psychologically engineered to keep going online through their apps.
There weren't established aggregators either where people gathered, except for maybe chat rooms but even then they were comparatively small affairs. Nothing was centralized, and forums and chat rooms were their own kingdoms.
Webrings. Oh boy what a weird memory to pop into my head. If you wanted information on a subject you'd find a site that was part of a webring, and you were set.
Holy shit i forgot about spacedicks
Because social media wasn't a thing, nobody really lived on the internet; perhaps the only near equivalent would have been a Geocities or Angelfire page.
Never used TheGlobe.com, did you?
Prodigy, Compuserve and AOL had everything you've listed. They offered large centralized communities and information. Later on you had sites like MSN & Yahoo offering users the same features Google does now. There was even streaming video platforms with live chat like Pseudo.com.
Otherwise your description is accurate. But centralized social networks filled with shitty memes 24/7 have arguably existed since the 80s. Even my elderly grandparents had a community of friends using AOL.
There weren't established aggregators
I AM NOTHING TO YOU? ~Fark
It's not about comparing one era of the internet to another. The difference between 2015 internet to 2010 isn't that drastic compared to having nothing, to being able to communicate with anyone, at any given moment, at nearly anywhere on the planet, and explore what seemed to be a near limitless amount of information instantaneously (well, more or less. Those 56k modems took a minute to load sometimes). It was mind blowing, particularly for those of us around 10 or so when your brain is just craving information and wanting to know how the world works. Finding the most random, niche, weird web pages back in the 90s was just the most fun thing ever too.
Plus boobs.
I'm sad I missed the 90's era of internet. :(
Not because of boobs though, totally not.
Less social
In a way, yes. You didnāt get all of the internet talking to each other like you have now. Instead you had small close knit communities. You had real life friends or you had small communities with a shared interest. You could play a game or join a forum and youād know everybody like it was a small town.
youād know everybody like it was a small town.
Probably the worst lost aspect of current internet, I remember the small 200-500 max member forums. Now even reddit subs go to shit after a while
Tbf you can still have that with Discord servers, just harder to find since the traditional forum is close to dead.
I member having server- specific forums for everquest, and all the flame wars and drama that went along with them
the first years of EverQuest were magical.
Scars of velious was the peak imo, hard to top a one time dragon kill, and oh God the fighting over who got to kill the dragons in the big temple. Back before instanced zones existed so everything was competition or cooperation, back when you could steal loot if you were quick and selfish... EQ was truly a unique gaming experience. No other mmo had that je ne sais quoi
Not easy to do on Discord.. Boy, I've joined tons of servers like that that just die out, or a user invites someone who is insufferable that causes everyone to leave eventually.
Hard to find a clan that sticks together, and actually plays games together now.
Think about living a life where you only communicated with people at school and at home, where your horizons were only as broad as the area in which you lived.
Then one day, you woke up with an iPhone.
It was like that, except your parents yelled at you about the phone line.
There's stuff I saw on the internet in 1998 that I'll never be able to get out of my brain. There was no 'dark web' back then. Literally everything was the dark web and you could find yourself stumbling onto the must fucked up shit you can't even imagine just on accident.
It's like the internet today is a slick professionally built mall.
and the internet of the 90's was a combination of a bazaar, and art faire, and a flea market where everything was put together by dedicated fans and enthusiasts.
or if eras of the internet were social media sites -
The Internet today would be Facebook - algorithms, digital manipulation
90's internet would be reddit - sites were user created -like the way subreddits are , there were "web rings" where links to dozens of other related sites were at the bottom of the page (this was a game changer).
But, in the 90's aggregate sites like reddit weren't a thing. The best you could hope for is to type your topic into a search engine and hope something comes up this time after months or years of searching. Often it was just one page of images and info for your niche interest, or a small site for a certain movie [Like this era appropriate Space Jam site]. Or if you were a fan of Cammy from street fighter all you had were a couple of images where they photographed the screen, and you know what? You were grateful. And fan art was super rare too. Then one day a few years later this Cammy Fan site appears and its the best thing ever. Cammy Fan website
Weird suggestion but check out the game āHypnospace Outlawā. Itās a point and click mystery game where you explore the 90s internet. I was born in the 90s and let me tell you, it is BANG on. The game is also hilarious if you have any interest at all in the type of culture that existed during that time. Its really well done and the soundtrack is amazing. SQUISHERZZZ!!!
Do any other 1995-2003ers not know a lot OPs references? (Despite being on the internet a lot during those periods?)
Definitely arguable. What a mess the internet after as back then
The internet back then was bad by todayās standards (from a technological standpoint), but it was much more fun. Back then very few people did things on the internet to get in trouble. Nobody used the internet to plan terrorist attacks. Social media wasnāt eroding the fabric of society because social media didnāt exist. The internet wasnāt helping radicalize anyone into extremist views. The internet wasnāt yet an echo chamber for people to validate their political opinions. Back then you could go online and basically have a second life. Today you have to be on your best behavior online, like youāre in church or court. The internet used to be like a fun club that you couldnāt wait to get in to.
This feels pretty naive to me. Certainly the internet was already radicalizing people. As long as people could discuss things, they could find people more extreme than them to learn from. There was no real enforcement so a random website could just as well be a haven for child pornography as it could be some forum. The mystery and wildness of it was alluring but by and large it was much less enjoyable than when big websites started forming.
The Y2K Problem is smack in the middle of this era...one of the first major conspiracies on the internet.
I will not stand for this Something Awful erasure.
As a 40 year old dad, fuck Cocomelon.
Seeing the progression of the internet is like watching the decline of your dementia ridden grandpa. This meme fully captures the first 4 stages of decline into darkness.

The fact that I feel nostalgia for 2010 to 2018 but don't know 90% of the ones in 2018 onwards, really shows how old I'm getting. Damn
How lucky you are. But that doesn't make you old, it makes you broken off from this nightmare of humour media.
Xbox live belongs in the 04-10 era
XBox Live kinda spans all eras
XBL spans to the present.....but I remember the 360 changing gaming culture
Halo 2 + Xbox Live was something else. All those custom āzombieā games
2004 and 2010 are VASTLY different eras of the internet.
yeah...late 00s had the iphone which changed the world, Facebook, online gaming much better, the rise of Apple in the mainstream....there is more but I don't know...
In 2000-2004/2005. There was no YouTube or any social media that nuked in popularity. 2004-early 2005 was pretty much the last year of Web 1.0. By the end of 2005, Web 2.0 was official.
2004 was pretty distant to 2009/2010 if you look up the stuff that happened in those years
That's why I said what I said. I don't have to look it up, I lived it
Definitely missing Vine in 2010-15.
Yeah, Vine in 2015-2020 makes no sense. It was peak from 2013-2015, and shut down in 2016. Everyone's response was along the lines of "oh, I forgot about vine, vine used to be great" around when it died off, with everyone more expecting it to have a resurgence instead of a collapse, because it had kind of sucked for awhile. OP needs a slap.
For me personally, the peak of Vine was also the peak of internet and it's creativity.
Screamer bait sites flashbacks
Vine era wouldāve fallen between 2010-2015
I'm a little old, but i miss the kiddos on vibe. fun stuff.
2004-2010 was my favorite, but 2015-2018 was also a lot of fun.
[deleted]
I still think 2016 was the best year for memes.
The Great Meme War was glorious
I fucking hated it so much
True but parallell to that was also this weirdly creative nihilistic internet culture that was just so fun! It's like the madness of how shitty the world was was channeled into the best memes I've seen since the early-mid 00's.
I remember the 2010-2015 period (Internet humor-wise) as the fucking pits and mostly pretty boring and EXTREMELY formulaic humour. 2015-2018 was unpredictable and often difficult to decipher, and that's what made it so fun for me. It was like watching Tim & Eric.
2018- present is, IMO, going back to the extremely rigid meme "formats" of the early 2010's, and with the same complete collective inability to spot or even understand sarcasm, irony and satire in written form.
It was the dark ages. We appear to be experiencing a Renaissance of sorts right now, but it wonāt last.
The modern era is so much worse, at least that era was straight up counter culture compared to the corporate internet where everyone is trying to steal your fucking data and suck away all your money. How fucking awful
Correct. 2016 was shitty AF. It was when every incel and MRA got the spotlight and whined about canceled culture.
what did you think about the mid 90s?
Not much, seeing as I was extremely young.
Hazbin hotel was a grand part of this era with just one episode?
70 mil videos in two years from an unknown team of animators seems substantial to me. Probably not enough to be in this, but idk.
I'd guess it's because of the community around it.
I think helluva boss fits better. Has 7 episodes not including the pilot with ep 8 being the final coming out soon. Its also getting a season 2.
No YTMND? Clearly sloppily researched by some zoomer.
I meanā¦youāre not wrong.

I submit these for a 90s World Wide Web section:
AoL, Napster, Quake, Doom, Starcraft, Dragonball Z websites with literally 800 gifs., Dilbert, Windows 95, MS-DOS, knowing 1 DOS command and thinking you are a hacker, ICQ, Oregon Trail, Half-Life, Lycos, gigantic Zip drives, Geocities, using the term "CD-ROM", CompuServe, every single link on a webpage being underlined and blue, "tables", embossed everything, hit trackers (shows visit count), Myst, needing the latest Shockwave plug-in, comic sans, webpage banners, Grim Fandango, Sim City 1, Civ 2, Unreal Tournament, "fragging," Flash games, 14 hour downloads, people watching anime via 4-5 minute video clips, the red-brick labyrinth screensaver, "You've Got Mail," thinking there were secret games if you looked hard enough, "I need to use the internet, please get off the phone!," huge floppy discs, installing a program with 5 3.5" floppies, Wolfenstein 3D, websites by people who "figured out" X-Files, UFO conspiracy websites, webpages entirely dedicated to 1 sailormoon/DBZ/Ranma character with matching color scheme, NetZero, dialing up sounded like the first AI speech, FAQs for video games, GameFAQs, getting e-mail felt like sorcery, repeating webpage backgrounds, people using Yahoo, Real Player, Angelfire, websites with background music, Ask Jeeves, the term "flame war," Rotten.com, Diablo 2, Limewire, websites with an entire section for "links," being really weirded out by Myst, mousepads with jokes on them only funny to cubicle workers, stress balls with website URLs on them, Y2K.........ummmmm (feel free to add more)
Winamp. MUDs. Anarchist's Cookbook. Doom multiplayer over serial cable. Simpson's Doom. Alien Doom. GIFs of a 3d spinning word. Renders of worlds created in Bryce. Waiting 2 minutes for a jpeg to load. Waiting 15 for an mp3 to download. Demo CDs from magazines. Warez. "a/s/l?". "Cyber?". Burning CDs and praying it won't buffer underrun.
My ICQ number is still ingrained in my brain. Wonder if there is some backup of a server out there which still contains my data.
Edit: it was Bryce, not Maya
yeah spot on
last night I was trying to remember what mp3 player I used. This post reminded me.......Winamp ......it was Winamp.
Obligatory "it really whips the llama's ass."

And don't forget the marquee tag!
South Park in Real Player....nostalgia activated
Omg RealPlayer.......
You just described my entire high school and college years. As a kid, I played on a commodore 128 that had no hard drive. That was in the mid-80s. You had to insert a cartridge before the computer would do anything. We also had a dot matrix printer. Upgrading to a computer with a miniscule hard drive that took five and a quarter inch floppy disks was a huge upgrade. I remember being on Prodigy before the World Wide Web existed. Going to college and having "always on" high speed internet felt like I'd travelled to the Future.
Diablo II was released in 2000. Oregon Trail is originally from the '70s, and the one I played as a kid is from '85.
And a lot of that has nothing to do with the WWW, especially given that that didn't happen until '93.
Diablo 1 then. Oregon Trail is 90s nostalgia bread and butter .
Where's Netscape in the 90s?
Bruh where is the goddamn NCS??
Limewire!!, youād download a innocent movie and it would usually turn out to be porn with a average movie title
Pamela Anderson.......fishing or something....
2015-2018 was the dark age of the internet
The gamergate era
2004 - 2010 gang
Can't believe it but I actually miss 2010-15.
internet appears to not be fun after 2010.
I'd argue it still was fun up until 2014 before it dropped off rapidly as smartphones blew up in popularity and overtook desktop for internet access.
Everyone's so anal and scammy these days
[deleted]
True, though the trends seem to be changing where desktop sales are increasing and smartphone sales are slowing and I've known people to ditch smartphones for "dumb"phones recently so we'll see what happens...
yet you're still here
2010 - 2015 was great wdym
Hell nah pink guy was funny as shit
Except he appears to be surrounded by the most toxic and unfunny things the internet has ever had to offer
I must be old. I don't recognise anything past the 04-10 panel š
Minecraft, hell, call of duty??
You don't recognize Netflix???
Or Xbox Live?
That I could see if they never owned an Xbox. But if they don't know what Netflix or Covod-19 is, then it's not that they're old, it's that they're living under a rock.
What about Happy Tree Friends tho?
Well you have to be really young
I donāt see the Silk Road on hereā¦
Oof that first panel was middle of high school through the start of college. Nostalgia AF
Aw fuck, I lived through all of these. 2010-2015 was fucking amazing, but in retrospect, yeah letās not go back.
Discord blew up before 2018. Should be in 2015-2018.
I wonder what will come after society memes
Youāre gonna have to go back further. I had AOL 2.0 and was a child.
I think I probably still have some 3 1/2 inchers from AOL laying around here somewhere heheā¦
Holy shit it starts in 2004
Is this it? Is this the moment I become old?
Right? I was on the internet with prodigy in the early 90s before the WWW even existed. The OP just was only born in 2006 and doesn't think life existed before they did. I mean I'm old enough to be this person's mother, but I'm not that old.
Oh take me back to the 2016 era please. It was so great with either the ignorance or just the data never existing that was being sold to corporations. Fuck I wish I could go back to that era. Best memes by far.
Welcome to the post-post-irony era. We're literally in a meme dark age
2015-18 SUCKED dude, it really felt like the general meanest era
Everyone was determined to just be an ass
2018-2021 can be pretty mean to but yeah I agree. Especially 2016
Is it just me or do I not see Homestuck anywhere?
Good.
And for the love of God please keep it that way....
I really hate the 2016 era. It was so toxic and negative with not only really shitty politics everywhere you looked, but Leafy took the commentary community to such a shitty and horrible place and the internet is still feeling his horribly negative influence.
I really enjoy this era. Memes are actually funny and creative and all the negative shit leafy brought is at least getting some kind of push back. Women vs Boys soyjack memes are horrible though, its definitely my least favorite meme of this era. The chad vs virgin memes were boring at first but the more ironic and post ironic they got, the funnier they got. TikTok, while i despise the culture, did have some of the funniest memes originate and spread there.
I also think the 2012 era was way too negative but at least im nostalgic about it lol.
Donāt forget keemstar and all that YouTube drama cancer
That drama shit was crazy. It would be drama every five seconds lol
Yeah exactly. Leafy caused a whole bunch of bullshit causing keemstar to essentially build another career off it. Other people followed leafy and Keemstar example.
strange to think that someday we'll miss amogus memes too
Amongus memes will always be timeless
sup beeches
is ched warden
man, lots of people are forgetting how bad pre-2010s internet was with all its edge and angst. Screamers and shock sites, yt comment section was a huuuuuge cesspool (people used to always say "never scroll down to the yt comment section"), chainmails were everywhere, hard rock was everywhere (imagine having to listen to the first ten seconds of Finger Eleven's Paralyzer or Three Days Grace's Animal I Have Become everytime you just wanted to learn something in 2021). People were already sick of rage comics in 2011 so imagine if they were still relevant and going strong a decade later. Hell, imagine the amount of rage comics about Harambe, elections or covid if they were still relevant- your eyes would bleed.
I still look back fondly at pre2010 internet too and wished it stayed a little longer but it would have def overstayed its welcome.
2004 through 2015 hitting hard though... shits like another dimension.
Unregistered Hypercam 2. Never thought I would see that again
This must have been made by a youngin' cus i don't see:
StumbleUpon
Neopets
Homestar Runner
MaMaMedia.com
CartoonNetwork.com
remember ādo you know de wae?ā
Pepe and Wojack only represented in the late 2010s/20ā¦..
Oh my sweet summer child
2010-2015 was the best, windows the best
This is glorious only comments I would add:
Wasnāt Ray William Johnson pre 2010?
Also I feel the yogscast should be in 2010-2015
The default windows wallpapers really tie the starter pack together
FNAF was released in 2014-15, what are you on
since when is tumblr starting at 2015? tumblr had its high quality time in 2012
I miss all those flash portal games on newgrounds. Good times. Now everything is just a $80 online multiplayer game where you only get a quarter of the game and have to pay an additional $30 for the other half of the whole game you pay.
Let's stop at 2015 plz
Runescape?
Why is BLM in the 18-21 had nothing to do with the internetā¦..
Not sure why Twitter is in the current era. The site peaked in 2012 and has been dying a slow death since (unbeknownst to it's userbase, who've grown increasingly detached from reality).
It is because Twitter is full of a loud and vocal minority.
Ah New Grounds! My first introduction to anime pornography.
yo cannot show Animal Crossing and not include the Doom Slayer. Those two are interlinked forevermore
You can tell how young OP is when thereās zero mention of Homestar runner and YTMND if the first square. Also Xbox Live and CoD should be in that square too.

It's BFDI. All i know about it is that it's a popular web show where the characters are inanimate objects.
Honestly I just took all theshitposting stuff
I only just saw the genius windows evolution background
Imagine using windows
why imagine, while you can use it irl
Lol no thank you
it has changed
RIP Filthy Frank.
Im stuck in 2018 and earlier
I was going to say Kazaa or Napster, but they were pretty much done by 2004.
theyre all bad and good in their own ways
Wheres garry's mod?
discord is gonna be hella nostalgic in 10 years
What about 1994-2004?
this makes me feel old
Where is arpnet?
I don't know like 80% of all that shit and I've been online since 2003.
2018-2021 is too 2021 imo
Can confirm, don't recognize anything after the first quadrant. Actually not much of that either.
Where are the early Millennials in this?
RuneScape?
ah yes, the daily reminder that I'm getting old
These last couple of years have been shit
The world peaked in 2015
I miss the 2004-2010 internet. The internet was still new, we were all rawr xD dino hotpockets, everything was kinda wholesome compared to the illuminati and triggered memes that came later, now the TikTok and Baby Shark cringe and now weāre all depressed, plus big tech (like YouTube and ~~Facebook~~ Meta or whatever tf has taken over everything)
2010-2018 was the best era :(
Most of those are misplaced..
I want to go back to 2019 so bad
You know there was internet before 2004 right?
I miss mlg
no Counter Strike. Might as well redo the whole thing
Half the things in 2018-2021 suck.
Yall forgot Homestuck
god I miss Happy Tree Friends
[[BIG SHOT]]
I miss the 2010-2015 and 2015-2018 era a lot.
I'm so offended that pre 2000 era isn't included.
I know, right!!
I was there when the internet began in 2004
You missed out on Napster ⦠the 90s were a fun time for the internet also
Ya got woooooshed, friend
Dang it
Limewire was love and hate at the same time.
Where the fuck is Homestar Runner?!
Happy Tree Friends, oh how your last episode was in 2016 and still has a decently sized fanbase
Where the fuck is Livejournal?
Wheres 97-2003?
2000s internet was great, I miss it. No ads covering entire pages, no obnoxious subscriptions and popups, no constant tracking, any computer was powerful enough to use the internet, and unrestricted piracy. I want it back.
What's the contestant thing on the top right called?
Battle For Dream Island.
Thanks
2010-2018 was what I miss the most. There's good content now but so much of it just isn't really entertaining to me anymore.
What about 1986 to 2000?
I would actually suck dick to go back to 2010-2015
Crap, I forgot to add Kony 2012 to the 2010 - 2015 section. Oh well.
and where are ytp's for one of the panels though
Discord should be in the 2015-2018
2004-2010: idk I didnāt connect to the internet too much
2010-2015: Good shit, nostalgia
2015-2018: Absolute fucking garbage, except for a very few number of things
2018-2021: 0.01% better than 2015-2018
why garbage?
in 2018-2021 where is no dislike button? God it's fucking stupid
?? I can still dislike and see dislikes on all my devices.
Youtube dislikes. Maybe the update for you didn't reach yet.
Shit op watched starterpack
Roblox should be in all 4 lets be honest.
ITT: Butthurt millennials complaining about how there isn't anything from the 90s and that 2014 was the end of culture
Everything before 2015 is the golden Era. Anything after that is all shit.
The way I see it:
90s-2004: Wild West Era
2005-2011: Golden Era
2012-2014: Silver Era
2015-2019: WTF Era
2020-present: Shitpile Era
Very agreeable by my observation as well.
2020-present: Shitpile Era
Harsh but probably doesn't begin to describe how shitty this era's going to be lmao
You have my nod.
Going by this 2025- will be the Crapfest era...
2015-2018 was the best, the Golden Age of Meme culture, I still miss Harambe.
2015-2018 my beloved
IMO it was the most obnoxious time in retrospect.
You think that because we're not far enough along in 2019-present lmao. I have a huge feeling that social media sites are going to become far more unbearable than they were a few years ago.
Modern day social media makes me miss traditional forums, where there were only a few assholes instead of hundreds of thousands of them.
2004-2010- the golden age
2010-2015- the golden age
Everything else- the dark ages
you goddamn kids need to get the fuck out and take your boomer parents with you.
I miss chatting about programming problems on IRC :(
a yes.
If anyone remembers, Stickam and Hi5 were also popular back in the 2000s. They were used among a bunch of teens and adults for communication and self-promotion purposes.
Fun facts aside, I wish I can turn back time and dress up as a 90s average emo girl- just hangin out with some buddies and going to late night rock concerts too, ya know?
Xbox live debuted in 2002 this starter pack sucks
2004-2015 were the golden age, when the internet was still something to find enjoyable and see new and creative content. The place where you could watch stuff you couldn't on tv and not have to really worry that much on ads or worry about youtubers having ads inside their own videos. Now the internet is so corporatized its ridiculous. Content that's made now is much more professional and I've got nothing wrong with people making youtube their career and having a small business over it but im moreso criticizing youtube itself for marking it so that irs reallt hard for any creative or new content to get monetized so youtubers have to have ads in their own videos because sponsors agree to pay them if they advertise their product in the video since they know the video might have trouble getting monetized so the youtuber agrees bc they've basically made the channel their fulltime job. Even then due to how yt works certain content won't get promoted so they still have to limit themselves to what will get views. This is why I think skits from the past from like the old Smosh videos from 2005-2012 tou never see anymore, or stuff similar to Filthy Frank doesn't get popular anymore. All bc of youtubes algorithms. And I've noticed something is that my friejd that I hadn't seen in about a year showed me how his recommendations looks and I realized they're basically the same stuff I get recommended. Game reviews, movie reviews, movie trailers, game trailers, music analysis, and more documentary style or research style of videos on topics, which it is fun to watch that stuff but that's basically all I see. This is what I mean about content and becoming too professional and the app feeling so corporate. The internet in general now has become so corporate that it's draining to use the internet imo. Ironically corporations trying to make the interest a "safespace" for everyone has made people not feel comfortable truly expressing themselves on most platforms.
[deleted]
yeah harambe always existed as well, it was just that no one cared until he was shot
2010-2015 was the Golden Age. Everything was just so amazing as opposed to now.
More like 2007-2014
[deleted]
Yes.
the one right before that was better.
It was and the only people who didn't like it were the bottom barrel of society aka gays tranys and ofcourse white women.
Yes
The best thing about Youtube used to be Leafy.
Nothing like bullying children
The good old days

Missing 95 (8)-2003
I don't know why you didn't make the Minecraft logo slightly bigger in each consecutive quadrant. Worse, you removed it after 2015.
I see amongus reference
O shit waddup!
You should replace the background of 2018-2020 to a screenshotted nft
Needs more counter strike 1.6 in 04-10; and world of Warcraft.
Also rage comics? Maybe at the very tail end⦠I remember plenty of o rly owls though.

Whereās RuneScape at?
I just yelled: āDefend the top at all costs!ā
How was BFDI this huge of an influence?
not including Facebook is incredibly dishonest. were you even on the internet in 2010-2015?
Man I thought MySpace was dramatic with the top ten listsā¦in comes politics with Facebook and the world fucking broke.
At least tf2 hasn't been forgotten
Honestly we should throw all this in a blender and the next internet era should be a celebration of the internet eras before it
Forgot 99-2004
Modern Warfare 2 was 2008. That was huge
How about the Doom, ICQ, mIRC, Bulletin Boards, msn messenger, friendster, era
2004-2010 internet was best internet
Well damn. Here I was thinking 2010-2015 was still current internet culture. I kinda hate half of the stuff pictured in theatest one though, hahaha
Better title for op: "things to which I masturbated until I figured out how to turn off my mom's porn blockers"

The first 10 years of YouTube were something else. The first 5 more so. Peak internet.
ā¦is Hazbin Hotel really a cultural standard worthy of defining a stretch of 4 years..?

Do not cite the deep magic to me. I was there when it was written.
BFDI!

Holy shit happy tree friends..
No Club Penguin/Poptropica? I am shook
Where are all thƩ Pirate Bay logos ? And Netflix ?
AIM messenger and limewire...
Newgrounds.
I was proud to say I was there, as a weird kid in HS. That was my refuge.
I hate 2015-2018 the most
Itās amazing how the SCP wiki has managed to endure through all these different eras. Itās like the Coelacanth fish surviving all these mass extinctions and restructurings of the natural order.
I want to go back
Where bottle flip
where is ICQ &mIRC?
Arguably tf2 also lived through all of these
where nubert?
Yo not enough people make those unicycle frog memes anymore feelsbadman.jpg
Wtf this starts at 2004 š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
Roses are red And violets are blue.... One day we'll cruise down Blood Gulch avenue....
you forgot mii universe, shoulda put it in the 2010 - 2015
I hate how these starter packs always miss Shane Dawson. Iām not necessarily proud of it, but I grew up on him.
For example, the first time I heard of a blow job (and had to look it up on Urban Dictionary) was in a Shane Dawson video.
Homestar Runner
Do you think the internet was made in 2004..?
The 2018-2021 one makes me angry for some reason. Oh well, at least we got Smash
Dafuq? You better have something pre 2000 when the internet actually started mother fucker.
Willing to bet a young ass person made this meme cause they fucked up the early panel
2015-2018 was best tho. we all know it
Oh man I'm so old...
Mignonnes
Yeah, sure, we'll call it that.
Smash: ye,
Smash community: ah hell nah
people just stopped using netflix after 2015? /j
and i was alive during 2015 - 2018 era you put there and i can say its accurate, the 4th (2018-2021) is pretty much that err, maybe move baby shark doodoo in the 3th one, since it kind of a dead trend, the 2004- 2010 era has some misses, I.E. should of put CS1.6 there, maybe also put, the 2cnd one also misses stuff like... heck the 1st era misses this: MSN messenger, wait where tf did internet explorer go?? you should of put it in the winXP era, also, you should of crammed a dial - up in there and thats about all, not so accurate but i guess good enough
Tf2 belongs in each of them lmao
Is MLG even what it used to be? I havenāt even checked my account since about 2012 lol I remember thinking I could go āProā playing on my xbox..as you can see, Iām still here and not a pro
No numa numa guy for 2004-2010?
im 2004-2021
The 2004-2015 eras were honestly the best, all downhill from there except Vine, it was also blessed
The fact it starts at 2004 makes me feel old.
who else started in the 2004-2010
No adobe flash?
2015-2018 was maybe the darkest time so far
it's missing based and sad trollface in the current era in my opinion. Cringe should be in the current era too, and maybe a crossed out League of Legends sign
Pepe never dies!
Whereās Kazaa? Whereās Bonzi Buddy being dragged all over the screen? Whereās MSN Messenger and mIRC?
I wanna go back to 2015
Me rememberibg 2015-2018
"Ahhhh, it was the best of times... It was the worst of times."
Whereās Napster?
2015-2018 is my favorite
I'd say the First Age ran until 2012, there was a brief Golden Age, then 2016 caused lethal fallout until 2019 onwards
Fucking love this one! Saved!
What about pre 04?
This makes me feel so old.
That 2015 to 2018 era was wild and i was such a little shit back then and now i just want to strangle that person
How is Tetra 15-18?
oh hell yeah it's chadwarden
I'm talking about that slick blaack
I'd put Slenderman in the second one. I know he was created in 2009 or so, but didn't really blow up until about 2012.
What about undertale tho?
2015 - 2018 was the golden era
I still don't fully understand how Vine failed but TikTok became a success...
Ya know it was around before millenials, right?
Some of these are in the wrong place like dat boi, leafy and slender but overall good pack
Dp? As in danplan? As in one of the most heart crushing end to a friendship danplan?
Where the fuck is RuneScape?
I miss the old YouTube...
Still waiting for the Hazbin Hotel series
Probably gonna be out next year if i bad to guess. Could be waiting for helluva boss ep8 to come out before talking about it.
I am fine with next year :)
Yea. That and Helluva boss season 2 being made.
Gonna be alot of content from that universe coming.
2015-2018 please
This is a good one
donāt forget squid game
Seeing it all set up like this even makes modern memes seem old, what the hell
You can tell a younger millennial or zoomer made this⦠RWJ was most popular before 2011. So heās kind of both first eras. Not to mention you forgot at least two eras within the first era listed here? Plus thereās like a whole meme style missing from the starter pack not to mention salad fingers. Oh donāt get me started okay bye
Xbox Live was huge in 2004-2010
Its degrading each decade
OP's a child.
RWJ after a long day of fellow middle schoolers calling you gay hit different.
I distinctly remember rage comics becoming popular on reddit and thinking it was a pretty shitty new era for the site lol. Oh boy I had no idea how bad it would get.
Time flies, Youtube got cringer and cringer.
It's so nostalgic.
Where the fuck is MSN messenger????
TAKE ME BACK TO 2013 I NEED IT
The Windows default wallpaper changing in each quadrant was a nice touch
I think it's fair to say 2010-2016 was the golden age if YouTube?
Lol the actual internet died in 2003 so everything here is just corporate communication
I feel like Twitter should be in the 2011 bucket..that's when people started commenting while watching tv shows and hashtags started being a thing for shows imo.
I dead ass thought hazbin hotel was like habbo hotel for a minute
Speaking of pre-XP, Bonzi Buddy was a thing.
Where did we go wrong
This makes no sense.. It's still 2013 and you can't tell me otherwise.
neopets should be up there
2018 is when everything started to go downhill. Especially hazbin hotel, fuck hazbin hotel.
Discord, but no Skype? for shame. Everyone used Skype back in the day.
Just wait until 2024 when Toby Fox manages to worm another character with a name something like Jokingston as a mainstay on the internet
The 2015-2018 era was simply the worst.
I'm so happy we have moved away from this overly edgy shit.
Shout out to my homie Unregistered Hypercam 2 and the Paralyzer by Finger Eleven likely playing behind it!
Made me cry
Forgot the 90s-2000
1993 to 2003 just didn't happen?
2004-2015 best years fight me
TIL an era is 3 years. Thanks OP.
What about everything BEFORE 2004? The internet was still a thing.
Good old windows 95/98
And that famous 56k modem
Everything was fine till minecraft and fortnine happened

2021 prob needs an lgbtq flag lol
Shits just goin downhill from 2015 onwards
pewdiepie was active for 3/4 of these, am I getting old?
Didn't BLM already exist? (just asking)
Homestar Runner
Man, rvb was good before rvb zero
This is like a 12 year oldās impression of the internet
I'm scared of what the new age will be
There's so many eras missing from here it's insane.
Ha, the transition from Derp -> Pepe -> Wojack is spot-on!
I feel fucking old
Some quality times here
This brings happy memories * that insert Up song*
2015-2018 was the dark ages
Indeed
i feel like im part of every generation. wait im still living it that's why. ill take care of that REAL soon
Hate that this internet era has a pedophile netflix movie as one if its defining traits
God I feel old now
Some of this is way off but alright
RvB is still relevant.
That training centre Tex fight is iconic.
No cs 1.6?
2004-2015 were the times
Where is Habbo Hotel and Neopets? MSN Messenger and Bebo? Flash games. Smosh on YouTube.
Where's TeamSpeak?
TeamSpeak was the VoIP service before discord came along
2010-2017 was the best
This is =3, I'm rwj and I approve this message. š So tell me guys, what's your favorite era?
Not pictured: 1994-2004
Damn. This is mad accurate.
i am now happy for two seconds:):
Youtubers are included in some so Iām surprised smosh wasnāt there in the early ones.
Was a total cesspool, bit damn if I don't miss the simple times
I've missed the 2010 - 2015 pack
where is meme man
Hmm yea. ābLaCk LiVeS mAtTeRā in 2021 next to tik tok look how far we havenāt come as a population
Stumbleupon
You cant just put Windows 11 as background just because it fits your narrative.
O shit waddup!
Where's H3?
Having lived through all of that, it all feels the same
Looks more like eras of YouTube.
you missed big chungus
Bro Iām literally 2010 to 2015 minus the little ponyās lol
No salad fingers or badgerbadgerbadger?
Is this a starter pack of starter packs?
Now I feel old. I was looking for the AoL and Earth Link CDs lol
2004 - 2010 is missing Schfifty Five and Salad Fingers
I remember nothing of the first era because Iām too young. I can also legally drink alcohol in my country.
Feel old yet? Because I can go on.
How could you leave Ugandan knuckles out.
hey, thatās spamton
I thought it was great and now it sucks the more I think the more I remember how much it suck back then and it'll only get worst
I'll take some late 90s wrestling forums please.
Me getting nostalgic for all of them
Good ol 2010 internet

Your Daughter she come into my yard and she kick my dog
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9fIjYnPazc
RIP Machinima
TIL me surfing the internet in 1994 was a fever dream
Where did we go wrong
Things going downhill after 2018.
Rvb continued to be quality deep into the 2010s
How to recognise the OP has been born in the mid or late 1990s: the first "Era of the Internet" starts 2004.
could have done a better job for 2018-2021 tbh discord, twitter what?? pretty sure those were popular in 2018
Weāre living in the worst internet era right now.
Deltarune chapter 2 is part of a whole Era?
If it werenāt for among us and fortnite the last two wouldnāt be as bad as they are
I saw them all.
2004-2010 and 2010-2015 the best eras
Surprised Disney+ isnāt in the 2018-2021 category
Gotta love when somebody ways "THE internet" when referring to only their side of it.
Damn I miss the years 2012-2015, I remember those days I'd come home from school, hop on Minecraft or COD, and just spend hours playing with my small group of friends I had from all around the world. I met some of the most significant people in those years, half of which I still talk to, and one which I started and am still dating more than 7 years later :)
I love how the newer the era, the shorter it is. Same thing as with classifying eras of humanity.
I wonder what this starter park would look like in non-English countries.
None of these are accurate
No Homestar Runner?!
Whereās 96-04? We got old heads in here.
Everything changed the day Harambe died. Look where we are now because of it.
2004-2010 the renesance age
2010-2015 golden age
2015-2018 dark age
2018-2021 the great depression
Is that happy tree friends
Oh god the PTSD lmfao
2000-2004?
*in USA
2010-2015 was probably the most impactful and the best one
Xbox Live not until 2010?
Guess I imagined playing it for the 8 years before that.
I only like the panels on the left
the 2010-2015 and 2015-2018 are my childhood.
Oh god i didnt realize happy tree friends was so old
Guess i'm getting old too
At least itās not 2015-2018 anymore
Internet did not exist before 2004?
Jesus thatās like the same era, the starter pack should just be āmy childhood memoriesā⦠itās not a new era every 4 years lol.
Love how you included spamton.
Imagine not having 1998-2003, with AddictingGames, Counter-Strike 1.5, Diablo 2, Command Conquer, and all those sites you could stream anime from.
98-2004
Hamster dance
Caramaleldansen
early 2000s web cannot be beat.
who is using windows 11?
You idiot not including home star runner.
Why is this starting in 2004? We need a 1995-1999, 2000-2008, 2009-todau
What about dumb ways to die? That's gotta be in there somewhere
Shit I miss 2010-2015 :(
I feel like DevinSuperTramp ruled 2010-2015 YouTube
Man, I miss Dat Boi.
I was a participant in Eternal September and I feel left out.
set aside and far right radicalization and 2015-18 was the best by far
some overlap a little, but i agree
Where is the square pink black mask man
Slender man. Oh dear god my friends and I would get together and play that game in pitch black rooms.
God can we just go back to 2012?
2010 - 2015 was undeniably the best era for the Internet. 2018-2021 sucks arse.
The internet has been around longer than 2004...
TF2 mentioned, I'm happy
There are only 2 eras so far, the era of hope and the era of despair.
I miss le troll memes
An Internet starter pack post that doesnāt include 1992 to 2002 is bullshit. Do better.
I miss RWJ and =3 so badly
Fucking RWJ, damn
Pretty sure that 2004-2010 is lacking at the least. Seems like such a huge gap in my life and way more memorable than the other time gaps
How did smash ultimate get on the list?
MLG, XBL and COD was pre 2010
Me: Sees Twitch on the current era
"Everything wrong with this generation in a nutshell."
Top left : childhood
Top right : high school
Bottom left : army
Bottom right : college
Really now? Where tf is fb?
2015-2018 was the best
The 2015-2018 era feels like a fever dream
I want to live in Early to Mid 2010s because it's pretty nostaligic and cool (even 2000s is nostaligic too i guess). Also if i could back in time, i want to see all the things that it change our lives forever...
So for me is...
IT'S BETTER TO GO BACK ALL THE OLD BUT UNFORGETABLE NOSTALIGIC BUT COOL MOMMENTS BEFORE EVERYTHING START TO DISAPPEAR.
MySpace was created in 2003. You're also missing the era before 04, how disappointing! I miss it.
I'm not even a fan but I feel like pewds should be in at least 3 of these
God this is the shit that makes you realize youāre old.
We all know which Era was the bestā¦
Chad Warden represent.
Where is plants v zombies 1 and 2
No mention of flipnote hatena, shame
I'll gladly take the 2010s, it was cringe, but we were happy. Next Era was just outrage bs
How are there no advice animals?
TOAST
No Club Penguin? Shame...
Whatās Hazbin Hotel? Itās pretty much the only thing I donāt recognise
A youtube series. https://youtu.be/Zlmswo0S0e0
Only has the pilot rn but the full season is coming soon.
Me who started watching youtube at the end of 2009 "After all these years, i have them all!"
I remember the late 2004-2010 Era, a lot of the 2010-2015.
Pretty much an golden age.
2015-2018 was so short but holy shit was that a good era lol
2004-2010 is the best one hands down.
2010-2015 was fnaf... šµ
I get pretty much all references between 2004 and 2018. Literally donāt know or associate myself with anything in the last panel :/
Homestuck should be in the 2010 era too
Leafy and filthyfrank ahhhhh
Ninjas are awesome and by awesome I mean totally sweet
I am apparently stuck in 2004-2015
The early 2000s/late 90s were a wild time on the internet. I remember when a single jpeg took like 20 seconds to load.
I still think about Chad Warden bizarrely often.the stupid shit he said got lodged in my head and never left. Chad-daddy got cash, baby.
YTMND
I remember me and my sister watching MLP clips 2015. It was a bit cringe but it was really fun
What's that paintbrush in the first square? I recognize it so badly.
filthy frank was 2010-2018
Team Fortress 2 is forever I don't know what you're talking about
and I was there for all of it.
I still live somewhere between 2007 and 2014
I miss Leafyishere and prime COD the most
Fucking limewire. That shit was so full of viruses. But I kept using because I wanted my damn music!
Draw the era line at 2020, 2019 was a different planet.
2010-2015 was the best time ngl
Damn, time does fly.
Rage comics definitely belong in the 2010-2015 era. They were absolutely huge around 2011-2012. Tumblr and Vine probably belong in 2010-2015 as well. Also Twitter didn't just become a thing in 2018. Facebook should probably be on here as well. Where's skype? 2004-2010 is really doesn't have enough representation of shit like mudkips or shoop da whoop, or god damn rick roll, but it has happy tree friends?
I just realised that I:
-was born and grew out of Kindergarden in the First Era
-went to Primary School in the Second Era
-was introduced to the Internet Realm while Middle School in the Third Era
-and started High School and editing some Memes myself in the Fourth Age until now
Anyone else?
(Edited for paragraphs.)
I did not expect to see Red vs Blue here. A welcome surprise :)
that limewire logo has me triggered. Also, i still believe MySpace was the superior social media website.
missing that addicting games logo. haha.
Hazbin hotel
The le epic age
The mlg gamer š age
The edgy age
The dark age
Hazbin!
Dorkly is still great. Shut up
Isabelle š³
Is hazbin hotel that relevant?
Fairly certain rage comics were a thing up until early 2013
A lot of this is super inaccurate. Tumble should be 2010 - 2015 and discord should be 2015 - 2018 to start
2010-2015. Elite.
You forgot msn messenger on the first one. And MySpace seems to be on there twice.
2010-2015 was the peak
The 2004-2010 one made me feel warm inside.
Also, I can still hear Chad Warren's voice in my head anytime someone brings up the PS3 - I mean PS Triple.
Spamton G Spamton is literally an internet personality.
Holy shit I've never felt so emotional
Take me back to 2015 through 2018 those are the best years.
I know of days much further back. In the way way back, the dark times. Pre DSL.
oh... oh no
I can't choose which is best
I am most fond of 2018-2021
2015-2018 and 2010-2015 where both golden ages in their own ways
2004-2010 was just iconic
IM GLAD I MADE IT ON THE LIST
The best era was not included
yo soy del 2004 y 2010
You skipped MSN Messenger and Napster.
Kids today thinking the internet started in the early 2000s.
I was there when it started...in the 80s.
BBSs, Compuserve, Prodigy, AOL, Case Western Reserve, using your modem to call random numbers in case a computer picked up. Checking the phone book to make sure the number was in your ZUM zone so that you didn't get changed for the phone call.
Wild.
What a time it was.
and none is better then the other they all have their goods and their bads.
first 3 eras are the best
Ima 2014-16 lad
The first one is all messed up. Whereās the livejournal and ICQ era? How old are you OP?
YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS! It's time for the comment question of the day
ABAP baby, as baller as possible
Xbox Live 2010-2015?? Umm I was an Xbox Live Beta tester in like 2002.
Who is the guy with the wind waker pfp I keep on hearing about him
Weird, I remember all the stuff from the 2004 era but not any of the stuff after
Back in my day we had mIRC and ICQ and we liked it!
TIL the internet started in 2004.
spamton
Slender man belongs in 2012
Nigahiga was big in the early 2000s.
What about those of us that started using the internet in 1998?
Pink guy should be in 2010-2015
I feel old looking at this lol
Club puentint??
2015-2018 was when we peaked.
I have that exact gir tattooed on my arm
Napster??
Where is Bananero?
OP confirmed for Zoomer. The ancient dial-up days are missing.
Where is Bananero?
2010 to 2018 was peak internet
I will have you know that the bronies are still going strong in 2021
Ngl. 2010-2015 was fun
Me on the internet in 1998⦠I guess this doesnāt count?
2015-2018 was a dark period.
Wonder what's the next one gonna be
Slenderman is in the wrong era bro.
You forgot herobrine
04-10 golden era
Jesus Christ I forgot about happy wheels. The 2010-2015 is spot on
2004-2010 is missing the upbringing and peak of WoW
Where is big chungas
Back in my day we didn't even have fancy graphics, just green text. There was also alot of waiting at night downloading because we had to call long distance to reach the nearest compuserve server.
Wb halo?
Imagine thinking the internet only started in 2004 /s
2010-2015 was definitively the best era no arguments
This is perfect
I take pride in knowing Iāve been able to witness all of these.
Interesting. I divide it this way:
2000 - 2006
2007 - 2014
2015 - 2016
2016 - 2021?
2004-2015 are the best the rest is cringe
2015-2018 was a the best era of memes for me at least. Vines always made perfect memes.
Nowadays thereās no really BIG memes anymore. Itās all fractured into smaller memes now. At least thatās what Iāve seen.
[[BIG SHOT]]
Finally something that includes BFDI
The sheer disrespect towards SomethingAwful. Without that site, many many classic memes would never have existed. Or the entirety of 4chan.
2018ā2021 is still shit
Hot take: 2018-2021 era > 2015 - 2018 era
Everyone is like "What about the 90s?"
Yeah well what about the 80s huh? That was when the internet was actually invented and it had its own subculture back then.
off THIS IS SO TRUE
Forgot Webkinz, Club Penguin, etc. on the first cell.
Iāve lived through all 4 and the nostalgia wasnāt a shot but a full nuke
The internet in 2004 was quite different from 2008-2010 internet. A bit more similar to 1999-2003 internet. MySpace had yet to blow up, YouTube was not yet invented, and Dial-Up was still dominating on average. But most of the stuff on the 2004-2010 came before 2004 but still went strong during 2004-2010.
2007-2015 internet was lit anyways. 2016 was the downfall and now we entered the dark age
I hope 2023 turns into something like 2004 - 2016
Where is he? WHERE IS FILTHY FRANK?!
Calm down. He's in 2015-2018 (at the center).
Almost has a panic attack dude. I have pink guys face so engraved in my mind as just another meme, i didn't realize he was there all along. You've done good, mister. Im sorry for having doubted you.
What? There was no Internet before 2004? Lameballs.
Pls delete that TikTok icon
Its deserve to be mentioned
