Ever since /thedonald abused site mechanics to hijack Reddit leading up to the Trump presidency, I’ve kept in mind the power of meme propaganda. That same thing is still going on just less blatantly and less centralized. That’s worse. When it was blatant it was easier to notice and shut out.

Facebook propaganda is mostly aimed at boomers and is still stupidly blatant. So I just don’t use Facebook. At some point Reddit, which has propaganda aimed at a younger mixed bag of people, will cross a threshold where I’ll have to stop using it as well.

Social media in general is too easily used as a manipulation tool. On two fronts. The site itself and the people using it. One for profit and the other for propaganda. We open ourselves up to influence every time we tap into these media sources.

At this point, I don’t know what the fuck is going on with the Rittenhouse verdict. I see some subs say it’s bad and some say it’s good. I now know I should formulate my own opinion on this, but with all the posts and memes I saw on it with conflicting opinions, I made the stupid of decision of asking “was the verdict good or bad?”, since I didn’t want to do research and was confused. In response, I got “if your right, it’s good. If your left, it’s bad”. What does your political opinion have to do with anything? Is it morally correct or not?

Depends on what side of the political spectrum you’re on. For some, his acquittal sets a dangerous precedent because now protestors can shoot each other in act of self defense, essentially creating war zone. For others, he shot and killed a pedophile in self defense… therefore is considered a national hero

I think your best bet is to look on places like /r/law or maybe /r/legaladviceofftopic or something for a measured answer.

The general legal consensus is that it was a fairly textbook example of self defense both against Rosenbaum and against Huber and Grosskreutz.

Where it gets hairy politically/morally/whatever is the various thoughts people have about WHY Kyle was there (ostensibly to defend a friend of a friend's business from being attacked in the protests) why he chose to wander away from the business once the Police were guarding said business and start looking for people to help with his "medical training" of which he had basically none, and put out fires people were starting.

Rosenbaum (the first guy shot) didn't like that Kyle and his side were putting out the fires that Rosenbaum and his side were lighting out of pretty much whatever they could find and threats were made from Rosenbaum to Kyle that he was probably trying to act on when the shooting occurred.

The other two shootings occurred when the mob, knowing only that a white dude in camo with an AR-15 shot another white dude, decided that said camo white dude was an active shooter and must be stopped, despite the fact that he was running to the police to turn himself in.

People attacked Kyle while he was running away and when he was knocked to the ground and attacked, he retaliated in self defense.

So, legally cut and dry, but it's super twisted up. It doesn't help that supposedly Kyle has ties to some not nice people on the white supremacist/proud boy/maga side so some people think he went there to try and start some shit and shoot people. But there's no evidence of that since everything we have of him that night is being super non-aggressive and conciliatory, if over his head.

If we had evidence of Kyle, for example, antagonizing people, aiming his gun at peaceful protestors or whatever, this would likely NOT have ended up in a not-guilty verdict, as that shows intent.

I agree with this. But it’s natural to want to turn to a voice of authority when confronted with something too complex or too foreign to understand on your own. That role used to be filled by scientists and journalists and experts. Social media became the source and since then we’ve socially shit the bed — it’s how q anon and flat earth theory flourished and joe rogan become an opinion leader.

Turning inward and trusting your own judgment is better than believing anons and clueless talking heads. One step better, I think, is finding an expert or trusted source, one that would ideally know better. A mixture of both is good. Pay attention to your sources and trust your own best judgment.

Just watch the trial itself, if you have the time, if the prosecution is using Call of Duty as a way to find Rittenhouse guilty, you know there’s a problem

Apparently there’s video evidence of the event showing A) guy 1 charging at rittenhouse and making a grab for the rifle before any shots were fired, B) guy 2 hitting rittenhouse with a skateboard, and C) guy 3 aiming a pistol at rittenhouse, although it should be noted that 2 & 3 were at that point acting under the assumption that they were dealing with an active shooter after guy 1 was shot.

So yes, rittenhouse was more than likely acting in self defense, but the law says nothing about antagonism - if he was there for a fight, it’s not illegal, but it does make him a dick

I guess it was a case of self defence, since three people charged at him, o e holding a gun. However, I believe that he’s not completely innocent, as in Canada (where I am), he would be charged for manslaughter as in the Canadian legal system, you can’t harm someone without the justification AND if they did so first. Meaning that if one of them shot Kyle, he would be in the right to shoot back. But that’s not what happened, and now there’s a big ass mess relating to everything else.

Yeah, that’s not self-defense by developed country standards. Self-defense means that if you reasonably believe your life is in danger, you can protect yourself. Doesn’t matter if you use disproportionate force. Having to get wounded BEFORE you can defend yourself is, by definition, not self-defense.

And yes, hate speech is free speech. In fact, hate speech is fundamentally the most important thing to protect. “Free speech, except for hate speech” is literally just an admission that you don’t have free speech. Because obviously governments have no reason to censor people saying boring, uncontroversial, agreeable things. The only point of free speech is to protect the stuff that is controversial — so controversial that people would want to censor it.

It would be like China saying “we basically have 95% free speech, because we only censor the 5% of anti-government speech.” But that 5% is literally the only part that needs protecting.

And I’m not sure if you’re the type who believes this, but no, Canada is not a developed country. Its disposable income levels after taxes and adjusted for purchasing power are on par with third-world countries.

Self defence is still self defence, you are allowed to fight back. I already said but you can use equal harm so long as you don’t exceed the threshold (causing a major injury or death). Here are four characteristics to self defence in Canada.

a) the accused must have been unlawfully assaulted by the victim;

b) the accused must not have provoked the unlawful assault by the victim;

c) the force used by the accused was not intended to cause death or grievous bodily harm to the victim; and

d) the force used by the accused was no more than necessary to enable the accused to defend him or herself.

Freedom of speech. This is something people from America don’t understand. You can send death threats and say how all black people are a danger. But in Canada, you can’t. Freedom of speech means that you can sadly say that hitler was right or that gay people go to hell or you can say the n word. But, unless you are provoking harm, it will be considered free speech. One example was a project I worked on for my law class. The whatcott case is about a man who spread homophobic pamphlets in his community, specifically keeping. It out of schools. Only two of the four he made were removed as they were believed to cause distress since they actively vilified an entire group. The verdict was probably right. But people celebrating it are abviously pieces of shit. What he did was still disgusting, and he was looking for trouble, he was going there hoping to shoot someone. But in the face of the law it was self defence

IMO he is a piece of shit for provoking the situation (going out with a rifle to a crowd of people can't be coincidental) but also not guilty since he shot in self defence

People are basically split on the verdict because left media said he was bad and right media said he was good.

In reality, the whole situation he put himself in, what people did to him in that situation, and the actual trial itself was all a shitshow. No one comes out from that looking good, not Kyle, not the aggressors, not the judge, and certainly not the prosecutor.
