Bless you

I've never heard of hnefatafl before 😮

Me either. Had to look it up. Essentially Viking Chess.

Yes, nicely done! And yes, a very uncommon game… my son got me a set last Christmas and we learned to play it together… we like it better than chess…

My son and I play as well. Copenhagen rules of course since they are the most common. Just different enough to be more interesting than chess. I made our board out of a slab and put a Nine man morris board on the other side.

This is gorgeous.

Thanks. It's a bit rough up close but looks better on pic.

Nice table. Great game board.

Hnefatabl.

Could you go through the details of how you made it?

The top is 2 sheets of scrap ply glued together, routered the edge and painted white. I put masking tape all over the top and marked the hnefatafl grid, cut and peeled off areas I wanted and sprayed silver. The draw is ply with strips on edge that fit into routered slots. Legs are scrap (bit wormy) cut at an angle and screwed into table. The pieces are my favourite and what kick-started the project. I had exactly 37 scrap Stair rods so chopped the fancy bit out and sprayed up. The king was cut bigger with rough crown design . I was going to paint that bit gold and put felt on bottom of pieces but wanted space quick for Xmas projects. All joints are pocket hole. Sorry purists, 1 day I'll get there.

Never even heard of this before Ordered a board for Christmas

You will love it. Similar to chess but less intense.
