This is a legitimate problem. Men are taught that being in a relationship is their ultimate life goal, and that their only avenues for intimacy and affection with women are romantic/sexual. Understanding that we can achieve happiness outside romance and bonding with women without immediately self-imposing expectations about where that relationship is headed is much healthier. Build many strong relationships with individual women, the rest will naturally evolve from that (eventually).
Also, women are much more likely to approach you if there already are other women in your friend group because a) they see you're capable of interacting with women like a functional person, b) your environment isn't a turnip field they have to walk into, and c) women can bring their own friends with them.

Well, to be fair, the average reddit user (like myself for instance) isn't part of the men who treat women like trash, since they never dated one, let alone had any kind of interaction with one
Whole lotta projecting here...

the years start coming
It gets eve more depressing when you realize they had a “shotgun wedding”. Meaning they probably had multiple miscarriages over the years.
What indicates it was a shotgun wedding?
One of the participants in the pews fires a shotgun, which is a nod to shotgun weddings and them having one (potentially)
This is standard procedure when marrying into and dying in the Schrute family
[removed]
I love me a good psychological theory joke
A shotgun wedding is a forced wedding wherein the groom is forced at gunpoint to marry the woman that he’s (usually) gotten pregnant. Lots of people shoot guns at weddings, that’s not a shotgun wedding, that’s just a wedding with shotguns
Now imagine my shock as my upstanding, strict grandma randomly explained the real story of how she got married back in the 50's. They weren't forced to, but she got pregnant, he got drafted, run to the courthouse get married deal, and 8 months later a baby pops out while he's fighting overseas. Weirdly enough they had a happy long marriage.
I think it’s shockingly more common than we ever realized.
It’s a huge stretch but someone on Ellie’s side of the family used a shotgun at their wedding
Now I think I might need to find those ninjas cutting the damn onions near me.
My goodness I don't think there is a more powerful 4 minutes of animation out there. Almost no words and yet such a tear jerking story is told.
Bao is also pretty good like that
my friend and I watched this on acid. boy was this part sad. the dog made up for it though.
Disney movies sometimes are dark. I would believe it
Nope. Not ready for that today.
Same
Maybe half the family being unhappy about it? but that could mean a lot of things
They weren't unhappy, were they? I think it was to show how the charactaristics of the married couple also apply to the families (one very introverted and one very extroverted)
ooooh, that makes sense too
Dude... You're adding salt to my wounds.
Don't forget to rub it in!
What is the connection between a shotgun wedding and miscarriages?!
It means she was already pregnant at the time of the wedding and she miscarriaged later since they don't have any kids.
But there is no connection between those two like he implied.
The connection is the gap between their baby-ctaze phase and the wedding. He's saying that they didn't just lose a child and give up, but we're likely pregnant, got married, lost that child, decided to try again, and lost another.
The shotgun wedding aspect suggests the wedding was because of an existih pregnancy, which wasn't directly alluded to apart from that shotgun aspect.
That makes absolutely no sense.
They married and were happy for a whole while before they even dreamed of babies. They may then had miscarriages, but there is absolutely no indication that they married pregnant, nor that the shotgun wedding had anything to do with it.
Also, watching the video again, this looks nothing like a shotgun wedding.
I don't disagree with it not being a shotgun wedding, I personally don't think it is either.
I'm just explaining their position, and frankly there is only one real reason for a shotgun wedding, and that's pregnancy out of wedlock. Sure premarital sex is also occasionally used but if you're alluding to a shotgun wedding it's generally because someone is already pregnant. If this was meant as an allusion to that, it is a heavy indication she was already pregnant.
Personally I think it was just meant to showcase the kind of loud, raucous family she has, but as I said, I'm just explaining the other side. It's logical and makes sense if you make the assumption the shotgun is meant to suggest a shotgun wedding. I don't, some do.
I think people are read way too much into this. I thought the same about it just showing how her family is versus how his family which matches their personality.
The whole point of a shotgun wedding is that the couple got pregnant outside of wedlock and were thus coerced by the family to get married under the threat of a shotgun. So if the people above think that the shotgun was meant to indicate a shotgun wedding, then it’s a natural next leap to assume they were pregnant during the wedding.
Did ya watch the movie?
In the movie during the intro sequence she has a miscarriage and goes to the doctor only to find out she can't have kids.
A hidden detail was that it was a shotgun marriage which is typically done when someone ends up getting pregnant and she can't have kids so that means they have been trying for kids for a long time only to find out that she can't have any kids in the first place.
The point isn't a connection between shotgun marriages and miscarriage but to point out the depressing introduction sequence is alot more depressing.
Yeah uh everyone acting like the shotgun is the part not being understood
Yeah the video makes it a good experience.
Hey, fuck you, that opening doesn’t need to be any sadder than it already is.
You don't know what a shotgun wedding is, do you?

You have miscarriages in your ideal relationship? You're pretty fucked up
let people enjoy things
This is the second comment I’ve seen about miscarriages. Is there something from the movie that I missed?
Yeah probably the miscarriage.
Just watched the clip. I definitely forgot that happened.
They try to have kids, for some reason they can't. I just assume she had a miscarriage. Either that or she has reproductive issues
I think they just find out she can't have children.
The part that really splits people on this is them making/painting a babies room
A lot of people take this as they already thought they were pregnant and getting ready.
I honestly think it was just her personality and planning for the future she wished for.
It's confusing isn't it?
I've never known anyone to start preparing for a room for baby before being pregnant.
But also if it was a miscarriage why would they not try again many times? I've known people well enough that they've confided in me that they've had several miscarriages before a baby took. While I know for some it might be traumatic and they may give up, the fact she was crying made me figure there was some kind of fertility issue.
I mean even then couldn’t they just adopt a child from an orphanage or something?
They were disqualified because of Carl’s criminal past.
Adoption is a great idea in theory. You want a kid. There's kids out there who need a parent. Problem solved.
Except there are kids out there who need a parent but have had a lot of damage done to them. And they don't just need any parent they need an s tier parent. And most of us are C-A tier at best.
Marriages and households constantly collapse over adopting children that are just too messed up and bring the household down around them. The adoption measures in my country are extremely strict for that reason.
I watched two of my work colleagues collapse into exhaustion over adoption. Both Christian teachers with an excellent reputation for being some of the gentlest but firmest teachers who every pupil loved but respected. The perfect paren right? Whose job is to look after children and are known for doing so in a firm and nurturing manner. Married and in love since the day they met at work 20 years ago. Oh yeah and it's boarding school we worked at, they lived in an idyllic cottage within a 5 minute walk of work. They could be there whenever their kids needed.
So why did one of them quit teaching within the year and the other take voluntary demotion and start coming in with bags under his eyes.
Well it turns out they adopted 3 children who have severe separation anxiety issues. Regularly taking it in turns to be up during the night while they have anxiety attacks and parents regularly having to leave work because the children refused to enter school.
Children aren't like adopting that scraggly puppy from the pound who's just happy to have an owner. The children who need the most love are often the most difficult to love.
So yeah anyone who adopts a child is a fucking hero taking a huge risk. And adopting them isn't an easy solution to fertility.
Also, my first child is adopted and he's a absolute legend. I'm one of the lucky ones. Ironically my second child is biologically mine. He's an absolute toe rag....
It's only in there because how else do you show this with non-verbal storytelling? Rule34?
They did it very well with baby in the clouds. They could have skipped straight from that to crying in the doctors office and the obvious assumption would be infertility.
But the red herring is having them in between painting a nursery which puts some suspicion on the idea they were at least pregnant at some point.
I think that's too jarring of a transition, but mentioning the baby in the clouds, if anything, only proves my point more. The sequence shows them deciding on a course of action (clouds), preparing (painting), and then hospital scene. People want to over-analyse but it's a reach here imo.
I think we're in a thread where the objective is to overanalyse.
Noone I know in real has gone through the stage of preparing until they're physically pregnant.
I get what you're saying, as a visual tool painting a room shows the preparing stage. But people don't go through this preparation stage until... you know... there's physically something to prepare for.
Sure you get the odd mentalist who prepares for all sorts of shit that isn't on the horizon. But the couple in this film seem incredibly well grounded.
This part of the film is also set like 60 years ago so idk how relevant your small circle of people is.
Yeah probably.
I always figured that was them finding out she's unable to have children for some other medical reason
Yeah, if you look carefully, there's no carriage, which strongly suggest that they missed one.
I just….want to make sure. You know. Miscarriages are no ones fault. There is literally no one at fault. Sometimes then human body doesn’t want it. It’s just how life is.
Or the fetus was not viable.
Bottom tier baby.
might be more mentally healthy than imagining exactly what your kid is going to be like which could result in you comparing your IRL kid to your dream kid and being visibly disappointed.
It's less of an ideal relationship and more just a fantasy of the future. Doesn't have to be positive 100% of the time
What the fuck is wrong with you? Lots of people are already content with their partners and have found their ideal relationships, with all that comes with it.
Who are you to call them fucked up just because they've miscarried?
You are the single most fucked up commenter in this entire thread.
I don't think they said that any relationship that has suffered a miscarriage is fucked up, but the idea of wanting a relationship where a miscarriage is involved is fucked
I can't tell if you're trolling or serious
You're the one out here really saying "she can't ideal if her womb doesn't do the thing."
I don't think you read my previous comments. This is all in his head, there's no one having a miscarriage in real life. All in his head, and in his mind, MIND, the place where you have thoughts, has the idea of miscarriage. Did you not read the meme right
Previous comments? It was a top level comment. If you've made other comments on this post or commented on this topic on other subs before, why would I go out of my way to research that..?
To know what I was talking about instead of just assuming something that is false. There was never a talk about real people having miscarriages, don't know where you got that idea from.
That would be you, and clearly I'm not the only one. For the sake of benefit of the doubt, I believe you about what you meant, but communication is a two way thing and yeah this one is kinda on you... blue squiggly.
You should re-read his comment, this is not what he said or meant. Everyone seems to understand it except you.
What is an “ideal relationship”? And why should people feel the need to focus on this relative concept? I know, and agree, that a healthy relationship should have some standards but let people walk their own path.
Also, let me remind you that miscarriage cannot be fully controlled. There are infinite factors that determine the outcome. The best thing to do is to control the response, the reaction to the events.
Edit: I am not saying that I am fine with miscarriages. I am not. AND The video doesn’t represent his personal concept of an “ideal relationship” it represent his thoughts only at that instance. Miscarriage is not a positive thought. But it is a thought that can be randomly generated.
So you're fine with miscarriages despite it having a negative connotations
I don’t remember saying that. I said what I said. You just expressed your synthesis and claimed that I said that. I am not fine with miscarriages. Nobody probably is. But like I said, it is not fully controllable. However, our reaction to it IS controllable. So miscarriage should not be considered as a standard in terms of an “ideal relationship” You can understand what you understand.
Well in your ideal relationship, where you have control over everything, why would you purposely want a miscarriage to happen? The meme has that scene where the doctor told her about the miscarriage. I'm not talking about a real relationship, just his idea of one.
Just because he thought that they would have a miscarriage doesn’t mean that the whole sequence represents his concept of an “ideal relationship” it just shows what he thought at the time. Miscarriage is not a positive thought, sure. But it is a thought.
Also, I did not say that an ideal relationship is dependant on full control, I just claimed that there will be things that will be out of control. And our reaction will be the determinant of the relationship in the end.
Die young cuz it’s not as simple lol
If you prefer to make it complicated, go ahead. Nobody’s stopping you. Throughout life, many concepts are open to interpretations that are related to people’s different perspectives.
Well if it happens you can't really do anything to stop it
I think you got the wrong impression. In his ideal, listen, I D E A L relationship, he has the idea of miscarriage in it. Why would you want something so bad to happen to your wife or husband after trying to have kids.
But the video doesn’t represent his “ideal relationship” it just represents his thoughts at the time. Maybe he thought that at some point a miscarriage would happen? It isn’t a positive thought, sure. But it is a thought.
Why would he have that in his thought in the first place, to reference my first comment, he's pretty fucked up
I don’t know, ask him? Sometimes thoughts are randomly generated? Is it his fault that he thought that thought at that instance?
Well, the idea is you shouldn’t be dreaming of your partner having a miscarriage or cancer.
Yes. But the video doesn’t represent his “dreams” or his idea of an “ideal relationship” the video only shows his thoughts at that instance. Positive and negative.
