The only problem with having giant robots is that it indicates a need for giant robots, which probably implies some other thing happening that certainly I and probably you would be much less enthusiastic about.
So, if I'm understanding you right:
If I want giant robots to be real, I have to create a situation that only giant robots can solve.
I am uncomfortable with answering this question now.
You could always invent Minovsky particles
The best option would be a Patlabor situation where the giant robots are mainly meant for heavy construction projects, but it's questionable if that's realistic.

Evangelion meets warframe
After playing a LOT of Stellaris recently, I can think of some awesome storylines/head cannon that could go with this image. Imagine a fanatic spiritualist species with hyper-gaurdians that roam their capital world constantly in guard of threats who dare get close. Love it!

They should make an ordinary drama tv show where everything is normal but every once In a while a mile high robo ninja walks by. Everyone acknowledges it but isn’t phased by it and the lawyer/doctor/family show goes on. Then they wait unit season 3 before they explain why these robots exist
