Because they are a company. A company has investors. Investors are not interested in having their investment stagnate. As a consequence, a company has to continuously grow. Ask yourself, why would they make higher quality guns? Is there a significant part of market that buys more expensive guns? No, there isn't. There is also no real competition there.
But there is a market for selling cheap nerf darts. That's the market they need to expand in. They try to monopolize it by being the only ones who can sell darts for their guns.
As anti consumer as this is, this is exactly how companies work.

The darts they're referring to are basically made from Styrofoam. They don't bend, they snap. Oh also the "Ultra" line refusing knockoff darts has already flopped because of poor out of box preformance and horrible prices compared to competitors like Dart Zone, Adventure Force, and X-Shot. The Ultra line was intended to compete with Dart Zone/Adventure Force's Pro line, the difference being the dart type and that Nerf didn't give you the value of your money, and made clearly false performance claims on commercials and packaging. A $20 blaster from DZ/AF preforms better than Nerf's flagship blasters from lines other than Rival. But even in Rival DZ/AF make blasters that preform the same maybe a tiny bit better or worse for half the price.

Off topic but the nerf ultra depicted is the sickest nerf gun I ever owned. I bought it pre pandemic I think. Like why should I have to pump to fire? Nerf ultra is semi automatic and can shoot 25 from the drum! I heard it didnāt sell all because morons donāt understand how to semi auto fire.
