Same with Nintendo ds users

Cope harder, ds is still better than Vista anyways 😎😎

both worse than psp

Honestly ps vita with modding is king shit

DS is worse actually because they only work on unencrypted or WEP networks which are fundamentally terrible. I just keep a linksys wrt54g around that I plug in whenever I want to use my DS.

It's amazing how my understanding of what you were saying completely dissolved when I started reading the second sentence.

Okay; I'll try again. A wrt54g is a wireless router that's really hackable and really old - it's the classic blue and black one you probably saw everywhere in the mid-2000's. I usually can get them for under $5 at garage sales and such these days.

I just keep one around as a spare router specifically for Nintendo DS wifi. Plug it in, WEP network comes up, play DS, turn off router when done for security.

Y'know I did not expect an explanation, but that is good to know.

it’s not even funny it’s facts

mostly when the kernel module loaded for the wifi chip on the laptop's kind of shit or the wrong one, but your in denial about it so you try every command line trick to basically redo your whole networking stack.

mostly when the peepee loaded for the poopoo doesn’t whip and naenae on the gay fart balls

not for my wifi chip apparently, i almost have to rebuild the driver from source until i found out i can use mobile hotspot and sudo apt-get update to get the drivers.

my time that happened was the realtek chip, they'd "fixed" the module in a kernel update, but it was written testing against the full sized card I think, so it had all the acpi power states fucked up.

Then I learned those are like a 10 dollar part, so I just swapped it and even got a pretty good upgrade, bluetooth 5 and a speed boost real snazy.

Eh not really. Even on the most bare-bones system you can do it pretty simply. And a lot of them even do it graphically. But on those that don't:

  1. List all nearby access points: iwlist scan (run as root)
  2. Edit /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf with the most basic bits of information given by the scanning command.

For instance:

network={
    ssid="AP_NAME"
    key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
    psk="passwordgoeshere"
}

That's it; you're done.

That's assuming an atheros 9k or some other firmware-free card of course, drivers/firmware can be their own bundle of fun otherwise - but that's the manufacturer's fault for not licensing their firmware better, and not some inherent flaw in the operating system.

Edit: oh, i forgot you guys are afraid of text editors, my mistake

[deleted]

Because networks have these things called passwords that you have to type in. And when you type them in, guess how the OS remembers them? It stores them in files. Even if it tries to hide that it's a file from you. Even the windows registry is actually a couple files that contain databases.

You can use a script to write a config file, if you really need that, though. I do something like that to randomly select a VPN server.

[deleted]

i mean there are tools like nmtui and wifi-menu that can do it for you

What you suggest exists, if you ascribe to the systemd philosophy (I am pretty hesitant to - systemd tends to piss me off every time I have to touch it, but if you never have to deep dive then it's pretty ok I guess). It's nmcli. I think it uses policykit for authentication and dbus for messaging with a daemon that invokes wpa_supplicant for you.

I don't personally like systemd much because it makes doing things like setting up a script to run at boot much more irritating, and I've never been able to get a serial terminal login working with it at all. Also "a stop job is running…" messages that waste my time.

And I had one machine where it would hang on boot 50% of the time when using systemd init, completely randomly.

How the fuck I dual boot, I need help

Assuming one of the OSes is windows, install windows first, then install linux. Also if you use win10 have fun stopping it from rewriting your bootloader.

I dont even know what that means so I dont care😎

that's fair. have a nice day.

what about chromebooks

Those should be doable, I think. Pedantically speaking they already run linux, but if you want full access/control you'll want to install your own distribution.

Here's one guide on getting Debian on an HP chromebook; Ubuntu is based on Debian so it probably will also work there. There's also a good chance it will work on other non-HP chromebooks.

https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/HP/Chromebook%2014

If you tell me your specific model I'd be happy to try.

idk my school hasn't released them yet 😅

ah, planning ahead I see.

yea, but they had a policy that stated that it had to be returned at the end of high school unmodified

so just image it and then flash it back before you turn it in

i hope they wont notice it

thx btw

Yeah, like I installed manjaro in dual boot but I don't know how the fuck I boot into manjaro again, i created a partition on my computer and installed it there.

you probably need to repair your bootloader.

This is an ubuntu guide but you can probably actually use an ubuntu usb to repair a manjaro install

https://www.techrepublic.com/article/how-to-repair-the-grub2-boot-loader-on-linux/

I run debian though

Do you really need to dual boot? You have access to a Linux terminal in windows using wsl (developed by Microsoft). Much much simpler to setup

he took the retard pills

bruh he forgot to touch the etc/initd/eth.conf and hack the nasa

i’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!.

Poop

"I use Linux as my operating system," I state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. He swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision. "Actually", he says with a grin, "Linux is just the kernel. You use GNU+Linux!' I don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "I use Alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU Coreutils, or any other GNU code. It's Linux, but it's not GNU+Linux." The smile quickly drops from the man's face. His body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth and drops to the floor with a sickly thud. As he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!" Coolly, I reply "If windows were compiled with GCC, would that make it GNU?" I interrupt his response with "-and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. Even if you were correct, you won't be for long." With a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. He lies on the floor, cold and limp. I've womansplained him to death.

Even if not GNU, it's still not just a linux kernel. There's still userland software.

Uh actually I’m using Alpine which doesn’t have GNU, so calling it Linux is perfectly correct

Take this libtard 😎😎

Replacing GNU with a GNU clone doesn't mean Linux is an OS. It means you're now running BusyBox/Linux now.

Libtard destroyed with facts and logic

what is GNU and why does it sound like its laggy

What Linux does to a mf

ahh the sacred copypasta

No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation. Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ. One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you? (An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example. Next, even if we limit the GNU/Linux title to the GNU-based Linux distributions, we run into another obvious problem. XFree86 may well be more important to a particular Linux installation than the sum of all the GNU contributions. More properly, shouldn't the distribution be called XFree86/Linux? Or, at a minimum, XFree86/GNU/Linux? Of course, it would be rather arbitrary to draw the line there when many other fine contributions go unlisted. Yes, I know you've heard this one before. Get used to it. You'll keep hearing it until you can cleanly counter it. You seem to like the lines-of-code metric. There are many lines of GNU code in a typical Linux distribution. You seem to suggest that (more LOC) == (more important). However, I submit to you that raw LOC numbers do not directly correlate with importance. I would suggest that clock cycles spent on code is a better metric. For example, if my system spends 90% of its time executing XFree86 code, XFree86 is probably the single most important collection of code on my system. Even if I loaded ten times as many lines of useless bloatware on my system and I never excuted that bloatware, it certainly isn't more important code than XFree86. Obviously, this metric isn't perfect either, but LOC really, really sucks. Please refrain from using it ever again in supporting any argument. Last, I'd like to point out that we Linux and GNU users shouldn't be fighting among ourselves over naming other people's software. But what the heck, I'm in a bad mood now. I think I'm feeling sufficiently obnoxious to make the point that GCC is so very famous and, yes, so very useful only because Linux was developed. In a show of proper respect and gratitude, shouldn't you and everyone refer to GCC as 'the Linux compiler'? Or at least, 'Linux GCC'? Seriously, where would your masterpiece be without Linux? Languishing with the HURD? If there is a moral buried in this rant, maybe it is this: Be grateful for your abilities and your incredible success and your considerable fame. Continue to use that success and fame for good, not evil. Also, be especially grateful for Linux' huge contribution to that success. You, RMS, the Free Software Foundation, and GNU software have reached their current high profiles largely on the back of Linux. You have changed the world. Now, go forth and don't be a nag. Thanks for listening.

iwctl moment

I literally will not anything other than networkmanager what the fuck is all this netctl and iwd shit get it out of my face

clearly you don't use arch btw 😏

not since they started shipping it with iwd

we just the press the WiFi icon, select a network and type in the password.

"We" - speak for yourself; I don't use network-manager or wicd for instance. It is nice to have them as an option though.

I have a script that just automatically connects to any of the AP's I've listed in a file that are in range. But that's because I'm an engineering guy and have some esoteric network configuration stuff on my LAN.

For the average user, though, yeah, even on linux desktops there's an icon

I used to do all that shit, had the full riced out tiling window manager setup, but eventually I just wanted the creature comforts of a proper desktop environment

I don't really rice (aesthetics are dumb). I used to have a "proper desktop environment" and decided that I preferred light weight while keeping some modicum of functionality, with fewer annoying dependencies. I still use something a lot heavier than the 'ricing' wm's, and I don't use tiling wm's because it seems like it's unnecessarily unflexible. If I really need tiling I'll use emacs.

I'm also increasingly fed up with GTK and KDE in general so I wanted to try to mostly get away from them if possible. I don't use a tiling WM. I use FVWM3 because it can do whatever I want with pretty much no limitations to its configurability (and it doesn't consume a ton of resources on my weaker machines).

Been using it for four years at least now. Not planning to move away unless forced.

Things like dwm are crap. Mine's basically a lighter version of the old CDE (a commercial unix desktop). I even use it on a tablet-convertible (thinkpad X201 tablet) with a little hovering pop-up button menu I wrote for common functions like rotation, volume, brightness, etc..; it really can be made to work anywhere.

I use mate-terminal and caja by the way, so it's not like I avoid desktop environment niceties altogether. MATE is still a nice desktop environment; I just think it's a little heavy.

Screenshot. Not riced; just simple. I've had the same debian install on here since 2014 (though I used MATE for some of that time). I even have a window list that pops up on alt-tab so I can select which window to switch to with a mouse.

I also use mate-power-manager, a volume control tray icon, and even network-manager on one of my machines (just not the others; i only get rid of network-manager when it starts misbehaving).

Nobody cares enough to read that

ok, that's fair, have a nice day.

uhhhh.... theirs no fonny music. HOw am I suposed to laguh?

It's ok, I stole it from twitter too.

Its ok to steal from twitter.

Works great on my laptop. Too bad it's too slow to use for many games.

Basically any 3d game is too much for it. Lots of 2d games are fine though.
