"I didn't sell out. I bought in. I bought in"
love that movie
we can do a hell of a lot more damage from inside the system
By the time we hit the â80s and â90s, many of us from the â60s and â70s were already lamenting how so many of our brothers and sisters had turned away from our ideals of peace, love and understanding for the consumerist dreams of our parents.
How do you all feel about this sentiment as it relates to reddit? I can't seem to quit this site, and sometimes it seems like the ultimate in mindless scrolling/consumption.
There are differences between material consumption and content consumption.
Different modes, motivations, and especially different consequences.
Content consumption, in principle, is divorced from any underlying material resource (though the production of content certainly requires a physical infrastructure like servers, phones, etc).
The consequences of content consumption are primarily mental, social, and societal. How does Reddit consumption affect you personally? Do those consequences and effects violate your personal ideals of conduct and well-being? If so, maybe you need to quit.
If not, then maybe it's not a problem for you.
He has some amazing lectures and interviews on youtube.
Graham Hancock too!
Don't forget Alan Watts
I read about him, did he happen to ever speak about DMT?
How does one gain the title of "mystic"?
Lots and lots of drugs
I know it was supposed to be funny, but remember mysticism is an ancient tradition in many religions and many did not involve the use of drugs. I think drugs are a sort of easy and quick glimpse into âmysticâ insights, but you can get there through meditation, contemplation, asceticism etc as well!
In McKennas case, it's still lots and lots of drugs. Not trying to take anything away from him, very interesting guy.
If you truly know mckenna what distinguished him from others is not his drug use but his intense thirst for knowledge, his study of languages cultures and philosophy, including drugs, shamanistic rituals, and much more.
This dude lived a quite peculiar life
Absolutely! I think it is interesting that some people who have had lots and lots of drugs (Alan watts is another that comes to mind) come to very similar conclusions as the traditional mystics.
No, more the study and cultivation and implications of experiences he had through altered states of consciousness. Plenty of people do lots of drugs and are consumers.
Major in Mysticism at Hogwarts.
You can give that "title" to yourself. It merely means "seeker of direct experiences of ultimate reality" (as in direct experiences of God, direct experience of samadhi, transcendent experience you believe originates in your own neurology, etc... It's not belief specific).
Psychonauts pursue what they believe to be direct experiences of reality through the use of psychedelic drugs. And therefore can use the descriptor "mystic".
And I can of course have my doubts about their choice of "ultimate reality" :)
Ethnobotanist sounds like Hitler for flowers.
Fr I'm here from r/all and whenever I see "ethno-whatever" alarm bells start ringing lol
Topher Grace should play him in the movie.
I am out in this post
Derrick Jensen vibes
5 dried grams'll do the trick
Right now, this very moment, I can meet you those 5 dried grams (it was 5 and a little, not worth evening it up), and raise you 1200ug give or take a few, plus a ton of molly (it's my birthday trip)...
And I still know that what I'm experiencing is a product of my mind, my neurochemistry, being acted upon by a ton of agonists/antagonists/whatever the fuck. That this is not a portal into some other reality. That it's me messing with my perception of reality for a few hours, until it's over and done with and bills need to be paid and etc. Because I get it that none of this I am experiencing is real. It's a fling, a fantasy, fun while it lasts.
So you can be flagrantly, insanely, not-sober as indeed I am not, and still think McKenna was a destructive, pompous, delusional and willing to endanger his acolytes with bullshit, ass.
Lol what is real anyway? Hope you had a good trip, and maybe even got something more than just a drug fueled rant out of it.
Doesnât matter what he said or suggested. Sheeple donât listen to ANYONE who isnât a pop star- whether it be a politician or nail technician.
And, they will listen to ANY pop star, whether it be a rapist or troglodyte. The end.
Just listened to his book, food of the gods. He was so to the point about how fucked the world is back in the early 90s. And how its 30 years after and its still so accurate and even more relevant.
I'll have to check it out, thanks for the recommendation!
Incredible. Maybe all that psilocibyn and cannabis does make one see things clearly for what they are and turns one into a visionary.
I'm so sad his life was cut short in such a brutal way. He started to question his use of these two substances and wondered if they are to blame for his terrible illness. The doctors assured him otherwise. If anyone was prepared for such a horrible death, it would have been him with all his wisdom, bit that's not a consolation for the horror and pain he must have lived through that final year.
If only we invested more in medical research than weapons and tons of wasteful unnecessary products, who knows where we would be as humanity.
I know a bunch of racists who love hallucinogens.
I think hallucinogens can clue us into new ways of thinking, and help us work through toxic behaviors. But Ultimately, it takes conversation, intention, and logic to work through our shitty beliefs and habits
Without a doubt, we will see cultural, technological, and scientific breakthroughs at a speed and scale never before seen if people are allowed access⌠intention is important though for sure
Just noticed The guy I responded to changed his answers, so this thread doesnât make much sense now
It doesn't say his post is edited, but I have had it happen to me where a post got edited and it didn't say it was edited. Oh, well....
I like his post despite that.
I think if itâs changed within a certain timeframe it doesnât come up, but it was still after I responded so đ¤ˇđťââď¸
Ah, that explains it. Thanks. They might not have seen it and were just editing it themselves after reading it back to themselves.
So you do realise it was McKenna himself who attributed his insights about life and nature and humanity to psilocybin and cannabis. Like the quote here.
So I can't comment about the racists you've met, I'm just honouring the beliefs of the man whose quote we are discussing here. It was him who believed that these two substances opened up his mind.
Maybe you need to be a kind human being for them to work in a positive way. Then you benefit from them.
No one is claiming that they can convert mean people into good people.
So you misunderstood my comment, I think.
I believe this person was simply trying to engage and continue the conversation, not discredit everything that you said.
Yep totally. I understand what he thinks is responsible for his own insights, I was just disagreeing.
I used to have similar views, but my experience with people who still hold on to ignorance makes me think itâs more than that. I know people in my own family who used lessons they learned while on shrooms to justify their bigotry. I also had a friend do aya in a group setting, and one of the other people in the group, a very wealthy man that works in banking, came out of the ceremony with insights into how to make more money.(the shaman explained to him that he already has more than most and the rest of the group was noticeably put off)
Hallucinogens wonât be able to explain why capitalism is exploitative if youâve been propagandized against any alternative. They can connect you to the world but it will take effort to stay connected.
Now I view it more like a âhorse to waterâ metaphor. The medicine can show you the error in your thinking but you have to put in the work to unlearn toxic beliefs and behaviors on your own, and that takes reasoning and intention.
Yes, I understand that. But you also neglect the anecdotal evidence of people who have come out transformed from a single experience and then will start the work on questioning and reevaluating their priorities in life and what really matters to them deep down. And often that's love and peace and freedom, and not money.
Iâm not neglecting it, Iâm just pointing out that if that was all it took then we wouldnât see people who come out of their experiences worse than they went in
I don't think anyone believes they're the panacea, just a potentially very useful tool in personal development, mostly as a catalyst for insightful thinking, which for some people as you say will go the wrong way, bit most will benefit.
McKenna also advised people to think for themselves. You shouldn't take everything McKenna said at face value.
To be fair Mckenna also talked about how there where plenty of psychedelic users and 'mystics' who where still jerks after taking them.
There are many routes to enlightenment and connection with nature, both substance driven and non-substance driven, but set, setting, humility, intention and context are always key. It's usually a life long journey as well.
The ancestors did things a certain way for a reason, often these things where meant to be done ceremoniously in order to get the most out of it, because they knew the potential dangers involved, and of course it also comes down to the individual, their personality, and their past experiences, which any good medicine man/women will take into account. today there are not many credible medicine practitioners who will treat people outside of their tribe, there are lots of scam artists, brujos, and cult leaders who promise many things, but they are not to be trusted.
Erich Fromm was the same with To Have or To Be. Its gotten so bananas with consumption.
