daaamn I actually had to rewind to get a second look at that place, I had figured they'd edited digitally but rad to realize it's a real place! thanks for sharing!

For any vaporwave fans, this album from Hallmark '87 works as a tribute to this architect. It happens to be one of my favorite ambient albums as well:

Their other album has strong brutalist vibes too:

Just wanted to comment this. This is what got me into brutalism, a magnificent album!

Hell yea! The track Glass Elevator I could legitimately listen on loop for years haha

Every scene in the TVA so far has been a brutalist wet dream. Getting major Control vibes from the show

Exactly. This and 60s till 70s bureaucracy is a really nice style

Yeah!! "Bureaupunk" is what I call it

A bit of a contradiction in terms but I'll accept it

Eh, the usage of "-punk" to describe a genre has been shifted from actual thematics to aesthetics for a while now. I'm with you, it's not correct, but it gets the message across

Yeah that's kinda what I'm thinking. I just get a lil hung up when the meaning of "punk" gets watered down

For sure! What would be your better term for "aesthetic that encompasses brutalism and 60s/70s style bureaucracy"?

Hmmm, art bureau? Like a play on art nouveau?

I can dig it! Although it sounds a little too... cheery .

This is where DragonCon is held each year in Atlanta. Good times.

I spent 20 minutes looking through my Dragoncon albums looking for a picture I took of the hotel’s atrium. Turns out I’m a terrible photographer.

Edit: but I meant to say if Loki showed up at Dragoncon in full costume, people would never think it’s the real actor, but everyone would get picture with him.

Truth. Grant Imahara bumped into me several years back, he was dressed as Glenn from the walking dead. I didnt even realize it was him until it was like 10 seconds too late.

/really/ did NOT like that hotel, at all.
Not really had a problem with heights before, but those railings didn't seem high enough, the distance down is just monstrous, and... nope, didn't like it at all.
I'm in a cold sweat just seeing that pic again.

Lol all of architect John Portman's hotels are like this. Really cool atriums but my dude did NOT understand how to make guests feel secure and comfortable.

My favorite Portman Hotel is Hyatt Regency San Francisco

We stayed there. I think it’s my wife’s favourite hotel ever.

Agree… I stayed there and the railings were really low. I thought a tall person could trip and accidentally tumble into the atrium.

YES!! I'm 6'5" and was /totally/ freaking out about that. Was practically pressed to the walls at all time.

I was running over some alcohol to some new friends during DragonCon at this hotel. I hate heights anyways, but after I saw the room (the entire back WALL is a window, fuck that) I couldn't force myself to get in an elevator to get back down. So I took the stairs. From the 28th floor. I couldn't get signal on my phone, so somewhere I have a video of me crying in a stairwell.

Good times.

/hugs.

I /really/ came close to changing hotels, wasn't having a fun time with those heights. I could use the elevators, just, but I'd be pressed up to the doors, eyes closed, making strange noises.

I do the EXACT same thing!

There have been a few falls at the hotel. Either accidental or intentional, it's knee-melting, that's for sure.

Monthly no doubt?

I just watched the new Loki episode and am amazed this is real! So cool thank you for sharing

How many floors is it?

Google says 50, but I think some of those are below street level. Last time I was there, I remember taking the elevator to the 48th floor, but don't hold me to that.

No matter the exact count, it's more than worth the visit. It's one of the most impressive and beautiful buildings I've ever seen :-)

There are 46 rooms with floors, one floor (the tenth floor) that is a big, open area with restrooms at each end that is used for meeting space. That's where the TVA library was in Loki. There is the Atrium level, which has a bar, ballrooms and restaurants. Below that is the Lobby level, which has the check-in counter, some meeting rooms, the gym and pool access, Starbucks and a sundry shop. Below that is the Marquis level, which has ballrooms, meeting rooms and a FedEx store. The last non-garage level is on one end and has meeting rooms as well as a second entrance across from the Atlanta Hilton. So all told it has 51 floors, with 48 of them being aboveground.

I spent way too much time at DragonCon happily riding that elevator up and down because I thought it was awesome

amazing building, feels like a machine for humans to live in

There is no mistaking it. Beautiful hotel, very loud tho.. the entire place acts like a giant bongo drum.

I've always thought it looked like a pregnant building from the outside
