Modern architecture doesn’t even try. The last modernist movement that could have at least interpreted this was Art Deco... but that was back when people still cared about beauty and meaning.

I kind of like Googie architecture, though.

I always wince when someone criticizes architecture or interior design by saying it's too "busy" or "cluttered" even when it's not particularly chaotic, just detailed. Seems like the ideal is a whole lot of nothing. There's a building in town that looks like a giant juke box. I think it's cool, but so many people hate it with a passion. They've stopped complaining, though, because everyone hates the Salesforce Tower so much they don't notice it anymore.

How many decades now has the popular style been hard, featureless geometric shapes? When it gets to 100 years, can we stop calling it "modern"?

ModerNIST architecture is okay. It has principles to fulfil, it has a social aim.

It wanted to make living more efficient, (machine for living) or to democratise building (Bauhaus), to bring light, sanitation and technology to inhabitants, to create an architecture based out of epistemology (Chermayef).

Contemporary modern architecture is just using true Modernism as an excuse to build cheap and bland architecture.

Exactly. I can’t think of anything being built these days that isn’t cheap and bland. Of course, they still somehow cost a fortune to build, but cheap and bland is still the result.

Modern architecture pales in comparison to this historical beauty.

Agreed. I died inside when I learned about the existence of the Tour Montparnasse. PARIS?! Why Paris of all places?

What is that...? šŸ˜”

What is that...? šŸ˜”

The Tour Montparnasse? It's a big, fat monstrosity in an otherwise elegant city. It's like seeing the Grim Reaper at a baby shower.

Thanks, I hate it.

Lmao

I feel like everyone in this sub needs to move to Vienna.

Surely on of the prettiest city of the world !

I gotta learn to waltz!

Yep, looks like heaven. Nailed it!

You know. I been thinking for people of that age, it would be so rare for the everyday person to see such intense imagery. Probably only see it in church. The only way they can see it is to travel there. It must be such a sight to see this in an era where impressive visuals don’t come often, it might as well had been an opening to heaven

Right?! Even today, these are such humbling spaces to be in.

That's The Austrian National Library in the middle of our(Vienna) old town in the City Center. Heres an article and some more pictures

Tell me I'm not the only one who had the Beauty and the Beast theme start playing in their head...

The progression of dark to light from bottom to top is very satisfying.

Beautiful

When I’m a billionaire I’ll just show this to my architects and say ā€œThis is how I want the library to look...and the bathroomā€.
