Did you know that the new world, prior to European settlement, had its own dog breeds? Most of them are extinct today, but one of the few surviving lineages is the Chihuahua.
There's not much genetic similarity to the original breed in modern times, but the breed still has a greater share of old-world DNA than breeds that originated from Europe. One of the only other surviving breeds that shares this geographic distinction is the Alaskan Malamute.
