Only took 8 clicks to find an under construction graphic. LOL

I miss the old web. You know every image and word was placed there with love by a normal person, and not some corporate sellout.
It was hard to build them for most people, so MySpace filled a gap, then Facebook destroyed personal pages altogether.
I miss all my angelfire sites.
Wow, totally forgot about angelfire! I remember I had a few geocities web pages.
WILL YOU ADD MY BANNER TO YOUR GEOCITIES WEBPAGE?!? I’LL SIGN YOUR GUESTBOOK!!!
Want to join my Web Ring?
If you have to ask, then the answer is yes.
geocities > angelfire
Geocities required that you had a small button on your page showing that it was hosted by them. Angelfire had an actual pop-up window that you had to close, which was far more annoying.
I had a Homestead account at some point.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Angelfire/
That’s great thanks you
Don't worry, I had enough pointless and half-built websites on geocities for everyone
The most annoying part was how every browser rendered somewhat differently. It was hard to build a good website.
You know every image and word was placed there with love by a normal person, and not some corporate sellout
Er... image #1 is "the world of lead", literally a corporate lobbying site for the industry.
If you click 'Lead and Your Health' here, their research is extremely one-sided. No mention at all of the public health crisis caused by tetraethyl lead in fuel in urban areas. (Still a big problem in the mid 90s) They blame old paint and call it a day!
Who went to "the world of lead" back in the day? Definitely not me. I was searching all the personal websites and links and discovering novelty at every turn. That's what I'm talking about. People creating their own webpage to talk about things they were interested in, and link you to other sites they enjoyed. It was like exploring. It was new and exciting. Now it's all memes, apps, and doom scrolling.
There was no reason to go to any corporate site because you couldn't add things to shopping carts, etc. The internet was about fun and exploring and people were involved, not corporations.
First website I built was on Geocities all done by hand learning HTML on my WebTV over 20 years ago. You’re right, it was made with lots of love and late nights in high school :-)
It was hard to build them
Nah... You could make a pro looking site real easy!

And then apple destroyed websites with apps.
Telsur (image 32) was my ISP in southern Chile during the mid to late 90s! amazing to see their website here after all those years, great compilation :)
Wow that brings me back! Reminds me of setting up downloads to happen overnight.
I remember trying to download the demo for Diablo. Took 6 hours to get to about 99% before I lost the connection. It was upsetting enough that I still think about it to this day.
You need to head over to tucows and get yourself a download manager like GoZilla or the other one that was actually better but it didn't make a "ROAR!" sound when it completed the download.
Definitely started using download managers after that day, though they were their own minefield.
This is still the reality in some areas where DSL is the fastest (reliable) option, also considering how big files are nowadays. Until a couple of years ago, it took me days to download some games off of Steam.
The reality is that dial-up is the fastest some can get, and for the love of God...to get to their AOL account.
Credit obviously goes to the wayback_exe bot on Twitter for posting these every hour, I just copy and pasted a large amount of them on imgur.
If you want to play a fun game: go onto the imgur album, close your eyes, scroll down, and post the webpage that you landed on.
And have a Happy New Year!
Tables, tables everywhere
I've been having a ridiculously good time for the last 30 minutes or so trying to actually visit some of the URLs shown in the images.
There's something peaceful about the old web back when everyone who used it had a homepage
TOUR OUR New SITE WITH FRAMES!
You just made some Vaporwave producers very happy.
It's funny how bad some of these look and how well some of them still hold up in terms of visual design.
Vans we designer was ahead of his time
I wish the Internet still looked like this
Seeing these web pages and how they look reminds me of this cheesy instructional video of surfing the web in the 90’s - definitely throw it on in the background while browsing through all these pages
Also got you covered if you want a shitpost version of the above video
RiffTrax has had fun with that video, should you desire to see it get parodied.
The good old days where you could make boatloads of money by just being able to do basic windows things.
My first site was on geocities and it was about nothing and it was titled SKYFIRE because I thought it sounded cool and the official colors were absolute red and absolute blue which really POPPED
If you want to see the same energy on the modern internet, give Neocities a look. It's pretty much a haven for the old, less corporate, more personal internet of the golden age.
All it needs is a "website under construction" GIF, a web counter, and of course
How about REALLY LOUD auto-playing music kicking when the page loads. Oh yeah, it's about 3:30 A.M. when you're supposed to be asleep and it's a school night of course. Turn off that damn thing and go to bed. BUSTED

I'm sorry, I don't have Pow Wow.
What is this program?
I remember several of those. Nothing says early internet like the “Ate My Balls” webring.
...and they all loaded so so very slowly.
But wow did they expand things and make things available.
Miss those days - getting on the dial up, launching Netscape, and surfin the web.
How'd you find these?
https://twitter.com/wayback_exe
To get a lot more than the Twitter limit, I'd just search "1996", "1997", and "1998" for a specific date on the advanced search feature.
Incredible. Thanks for this.
Do you have a zip file of this? This is a pretty sweet time capsule. I remember designing my own website on geocities.
the content i need and deserve
bible.ca
The amazon ad that popped in there had me confused for way too long...
Loving the word art of the Canada Beef Export Federation site
Hey O.P. "You've Got Mail!"
I scanned through them all. I worked on three of them but I'm not going to say which ones.
Then why did you tease with that info in a comment?
Your definition of "tease" is very different from mine. I'm not here to dox myself for your entertainment, but I thought it was interesting that things I had something to do with back in the day were in this post.
Happy cake day. Now leave me alone.
Ok, dick.
I'm the dick in this thread?
Ha these are great. Will have to take some time to scroll through later.
Wow. Netscape and Geocity. This is a trip. Thanks!
Love that you have the Gryphon Theatre in Barrie.
NCSA Mosaic in the fucking house
I Love Lead
Good Job! You Got A Upvote!
The MAGA design aesthetic is deeply rooted in the look of mid 90s internet, lol
If you love the nostalgic feeling of the classic internet I recommend playing an indie game called “hypnospace outlaw” You play as a mod of a small online community and have to navigate old timey websites and police them. Sounds really boring but there is so much lore and great music and after a few time jumps it gets very very interesting.
Yes! I love that game, scrolling through some of these pages made me appreciative how they accurately captured this era of the internet extremely well. iirc, they added a new mod a few months ago that added recreated Geocities websites into the game.
F
<3 thanks for the shout

Quick q about the game, is it like a thriller/horror game?
Hi not OP but no way, there are some spooky and dark bits but no real scares!! I recommend it more than anything, it’s a truly beautiful/wholesome/meaningful game that makes me happy to be alive
thank you!! Okay cool I'll definitely dive in further now! And happy cake day!
Omg thank you i had no idea
I alllmost couldn't get into the game but I'm so glad I stayed and figured it out. It's such a cool idea!
"Her Story" and "Telling Lies" are also great if anyone enjoys the keyword sleuthing aspect of Hypnospace Outlaw
I know nothing about gaming. Is something I have to buy, and what do you play it on?
Yeah, it's on sale on Steam. If you have a PC or Mac, you should be able to run it.
Cant agree more that game is so much fun its like going back in a time machine. I loved the game so much I got myself a coolfest shirt lol
Love that game
