God I still miss the windows phone experience. To this day its my favourite phone OS. Great for the entire range of phones.
Its just.. no fucking apps.
I've never used it because I know the app situation was dire, but hot damn if it wasn't looking gorgeous.
That said, aside from Reddit, Google Authenticator and KeePass, I'm not using basically any phone apps, so it might've been enough for me
For me one of the big ones is that there wasn't even a banking app available. Sure that's also on the bank, but with Microsoft infinite pockets they could've done more to lure devs and users into their platform. Just look at how epic is doing with their (pc) launcher. Weekly free games (high quality games at that), just so they can create a platform.

Windows Phone 8s were actually good, except for the crucial problem of the app ecosystem.
Which negated all of the actually good singlehandedly.
Microsoft really fucked up on this. They took the Google approach of 'testing the waters' when they should have just gone balls in and offered incentives for devs to port over their apps. There also wasn't a whole lot of draw. It was just another black slab. It didn't have the same appeal to users as Apple did, and it didn't have the appeal to developers/OEMs as Android did. They placed themselves in a weird middle ground.
Can verify, my parents are weird and had a Windows phone for way too long after Android and Apple won the phone wars.
