When will this flowchart get it’s own live action remake?
When will this flowchart get it’s own live action remake?
Netflix, get on that shit.
No. They'll fuck it up
The fucking fullmetal alchemist live action was the worst thing I've ever seen. Not sure if it was made by Netflix but imo live action rarely comes out good for animes.
There was a live full metal alchemist!? Noooo... There can't be....
It was Japanese and fucking terrible. Like, an embarrassment. All of the flashy alchemy effects and ooooh a giant metal suit of armor look how cool!! None of the emotional heart or the thematic soul.
[deleted]
Don't remind me of that accursed piece of cinematography, allow it to remain in the shadows to fester and rot as is deserved.
Sorry, deleted
Never as good as the animes... However, and ill probably get some hate for this, I ddi enjoy the live action take on 'Ghost in the Shell'. Nowhere near as good as the anime butI feel like if I watched it as a standalone film, with no knowledge of the anime, then I'd enjoy it for what it is.
Scarlett Johansson in a skin tight body suit will make anything better
Live action Death Note was just as bad if not worse. Netflix strikes again
Alita was great
EXPERIENCE IMAX EYES THE SIZE OF GRAPFRUITS
Yeah, the eyes were weird. The motorball scene was awesome though
I mean, I enjoyed their adaptation of Kakegurui and, at least according to Gigguk, they've had some other successes like Little Witch Academia, Hi Score Girl, and Devilman Crybaby (I think it was Devilman?).
I actually do that already at conventions as a panel.
Or, I used to. Now I run the conventions and don't have much time for being a panelist.
Weird flex, but okay
Need a good laugh?

Something dark and serious then?

Mayonnaise you say?
The show does get serious then? Like, how long does that take, because the first episode made it seem like a bunch of zany stuff would happen, with Scooby Doo chases and nothing of importance really happening aside from them accidentally solving a mystery or whatever.
There are multiple serious arcs sprinkled in throughout the series. Also the end has more of the serious arcs.
Thanks, I'll put more effort into watching it then. Long running series are great if I can actually get into them. cough One Piece cough
It’s taken me a looooong time but I’ve made it to episode 348. It’s been so worth it.
Also episode one isn’t really the first episode. The first two are basically a circle jerk about how it’s finally adapted. Episode 3 really starts it.
348??? Wtf? How many episodes do animes normally have?
Normally 13, 26 or 52 tops.
The seasons are normally a quarter of a year, that means 13 weeks long. That's the norm. And most animes get a season each year till they are done.
Just the most popular anime that are based on ongoing manga are always airing with a new chapter each week, like Naruto and One Piece. And that's why One Piece has more than 800 episodes (the manga itself has 930+ chapters).
Well hot damn. That's a lot of content to consume.
Some of these animes are based on manga that has been released weekly since the 90s.
Yes it does from time-to-time but mainly it's a comedy show with heavy reference to Japanese and anime culture and also a bit of history. When it comes to the serious arcs though, it hits really hard and you'll often learn various life lessons as well.
I'd say give it another shot. Maybe 10 more episodes and see if the humor fits with you. If not, you probably won't enjoy Gintama as a whole. Episode 1 and 2 are filler btw.
Episode 1 and 2 are filler btw.
lmao that explains it. I'll skim through ep. 2 and give the series a shot.
Episodes 3-30 or so are character introduction. They're ok and still funny, but after that it becomes gold and only gets better for the next several hundred episodes.
Hope you enjoy! :)
I'm like you where I prefer more serious anime and I'm not usually into comedy so when I first started watching it I wasn't really sold on it, but the more I watched the more I fell in love with the characters. The serious arcs are really good, but eventually I realized that the episodes I enjoyed the most were the ones that didn't involve any action/fighting. The non-serious episodes just made me feel... happy.
It's now my favorite anime.
Spot on exactly how me, my brother, and my mom all got hooked on the show
This also works with JoJo
I don't think jojo really tries for comedy tho

Besides part 2. Part 2 is gold.

I think Gintama is pretty darn hard to get in to. Took me like 30+ episodes but now i've watched every episode atleast 3 times. I dont think any show ever has made me laugh as much as Gintama does. The early struggle sure was worth it.
Tried getting into it. 100 episodes in and it's was difficult to enjoy on both a comedy or shonen basis.
Hotel?
Trivago
It's a cool chart and all, but it's a few years old and pretty outdated. It's lacking a lot of very good beginner friendly shows from recent years, like One Punch Man and My Hero Academia.
Should've looked at the comments first. Spent 10 minutes looking for My Hero Academia after not finding it in the beginner section.
And Naruto is in the “watch this if you don’t want a show that’s over” category when it’s been over for a little while.
Boruto is Naruto that is stuck in infinite tsukoyomi. Madara is still at large and everything we've seen in the end including kaguya is Narutos dream world
Now that’s a boruto plot line I could get into
Boruto is fanfiction, change my mind.
Boruto is ninja Caillou, change my mind.
Nobody can change your mind, it is what it is.
shoots OP in the head with a .45
Wrong. One punch man is Caillous dream world after he goes into a coma from his cancer. That’s why he’s unstoppable.
I refuse to watch boruto. Naruto has consumed over 6 years of my life and it was enough
Why would I make you stray from the truth
I like rant videos and have been looking for Boruto rant videos and watching them, but they all defend Boruto in a way or made Boruto rant video several months or years ago when it first started so they are outdated. You pretty much summed up how I feel and what I wish these rant videos would just admit! Thanks man.
naruto and sasuke vs momoshiki
Man, I didn't know that Kaguya-sama was a Naruto spin-off.
This is canon
Was looking there for Jojo's but it was on the complete other side of the flowchart. Jojo's still has 3 more parts to animate and the rest of the current part.
Safe to say it's not gonna end soon
It’s also not super beginner friendly
Fairy tails finished too
It’s not.
Did the same for One Punch Man
Because MHA sucks? I wouldn't recommend it to anyone
Wow, what so bad about it?
Nothing, it's actually quite good. Some people just hate every anime that goes mainstream. If you're into superhero stuff I'd say it's the perfect anime to start with tbh.
Oh I know it is one of my all time favorites. I just wanted to know his issue with it
Is it me, or is also Inuyasha missing here?
[deleted]
But one piece and naruto are in there?
They're two of the iconic central hubs of shounen everything in the last twenty years...Inuyasha is most assuredly not.
Sure, but they both have 100+ episodes, which according to the above poster would cause them to be excluded.
That only applies to "The short version" of the guide, which is just the first part of the whole post.
Ok, but Inuyasha isn't even on the extended version, which is what the original commenter meant.
Also HXH
its in there under "unfinished masterpiece" manga in hiatus
Hes making the rules as it goes.
Ah, I thought the extended version included the 100+ ep. series. Thanks!
"Also Inuyasha" is written under Twelve Kingdoms, at least
I think so
He mentioned it as an alternative in one of the notes to the side of one of them.
Inuyasha is not that good, fam. It was fine as a kid but it has a lot of noticeable flaws.
Yeah. It’s suffering from a severe lack of Konosuba.
KAZUMA KAZUMA
Hai, kazuma desu.
Which is now (FINALLY) dubbed.
a glorious dub, no less
Crunchyroll's ads for it are just so painful that I haven't bothered. Is it actually worth it?
Unironically one of my favorites.

OPM especially is a good anime for all. I know a lot of people who watch it who aren't into anime at all
Fucking bill burr watched OPM.
It's funny, because what you would expect is what happened. People started recommending him anime shows on twitter.
His review on it killed me, it was so over the top and in-depth
Where can I find this?!
Am not into anime, has watched it and enjoyed it, can confirm
That makes you into anime, you're trapped forever now
Oh god, oh no, what did I get myself into
This is the official stages of OPM
Binge watching Season 1 -> rebinge watch season 1 in Japanese -> watching Season 2 episode 1 -> Finding and reading the manga -> getting up to date on the manga and go to the webcomic
Where are you?
Watched both seasons and that was it
Gotta watch mob psycho now.
Seconding mob psycho, two great seasons there.
One Punch Man is the only anime I’ve ever enjoyed. I tried to watch a few of the others but didn’t really care for them, even Attack on Titan.
I also saw Spirited Away recently and that’s now one of my favorite movies of all time too.
I've been trying to find anime thats dubbed English for my son to get into. He adores one punch man completely and someone recommended my hero academia.
I cant stress enough how amazing my hero academia is. 3 seasons are dubbed English and theres a movie out. Another season and another movie are in the works now.
It is absolutely amazing if you like super heroes. Let yourself get into it though, I promise you will love it if you like one punch man. It has super over the top moments and it's pretty dark sometimes. I've actually teared up a bit watching it.
Which is cool for an anime that pokes fun at so many shōnen action anime tropes and archetypes, IMO.
[deleted]
I dont get why everyone hates this season if opm. I'm enjoying quite a bit
[deleted]
It’s a lot less funny tbh
Agreed. I realized I am not a stickler for animation as soon as people started taking stills of the animation to show me why I was wrong. Still don’t think I’m wrong though.
Same, I didn’t know until your comment that people weren’t liking this current season.
[deleted]
[deleted]
I’m so incredibly bummed about OPM’s second season. It’s so bad.
How so?
I’m not caught up so I can only speak on the first three or four episodes of the season but I just find it super boring. It’s painfully obvious that a different studio worked on the second season. In my opinion it’s super boring and the writing sucks. Also they did away with what was literally the best anime intro song ever.
Kinda surprised that my original comment got downvoted but I suppose it just goes to show how people will just automatically like what they’re “supposed to” like.
with a second season that's actually worth watching lol
What, they finally got rid of the blond "Main Character" ? He makes it literally unbearable to watch.
... what?
I introduced my SO to My Hero Academia and he has binged watched it in pretty much a weekend. It's definitely a good beginner anime and good for people that aren't that much into anime.
I literally just binge watched all of it over the weekend for the first time. I am so hooked on it and cant wait for the next season and the new movies.
The only thing I didnt like about it was how much time they spent reiterating points from previous episodes, but that probably makes it an awesome show to start watching at any episode.
feels like something more 2014-ish?
It's def from 2014-2015. It came out soon after I started getting into anime proper, and I remember using it to find stuff like Darker Than Black. It had a few shows that were very recent at the time, like Rage of Bahamut; that was one of my first weekly shows.
Yikes yeah I was like oK, comedy > making fun of anime cliches > it should be here but it isn't
Promised Neverland and Made in Abyss are also good, new gateway shows for people who won't like the shounen stuff as much
If I ever find the time to update it - you bet your ass both will be there.
I didn't see full metal panic anywhere.
Action/Adventure, bottom-half on the right.
Can't be that old, Little Witch Academia is on it which ended July 2017
It's not the anime, it's the ova or whatever that came before it ages ago
Not an anime fan but I love one punch man. Should definitely be on there to get people into anime. Im looking at other shows now because of it.
What criteria defines beginner anime? What would be advanced or expert anime?
Beginner is usually easy to get into, (usually) high quality, often with great visuals. HeroAca, Sword Art Online, Yuri on Ice. Expert anime would probably be more along the lines of Steins;Gate or Legend of the Galactic Heroes, which take a lot longer to get into but are really good. You also have shows that you should know at least some Japanese culture before you can really enjoy them, or shows that make fun of tropes and genres. That's more in the middle. Those are just generalisations though, this stuff varies from person to person.
I think if I wanted to get someone into "anime" I'd start them off on Seven Deadly Sins. It's cartoony, has awesome action scenes where enemies just keep getting stronger and stronger, super funny, in English, and is just really fun to watch.
That's just my opinion though. It's probably my favorite anime. I could watch Escanor fuck people up all day. Or Meliodas and Ban's bromance.
I was waiting for something from the Fate franchise. Luke Unlimited Blade Works or something
No Space Dandy either. :(
Maybe a hero will rise and update it!
In the end, it's obviously flawed by opinions.
I wouldn't recommend OPM to anyone, yet you and others would even start with that series.
Honestly Made in Abyss should now be considered one of the starter must-see shows, if you ask me.
Completely agree, Made in Abyss is just an absolute gem
Where would My Hero Academia fit into on this chart? I’ve never seen it but I’ve seen it mentioned a lot and I have no idea what it’s about.
Entry anime. It's really solid, high quality, good story, good animation, and it's the show I use the most to introduce my friends to Anime.
LMAO This is the most reddit ass anime comment I’ve seen in a while
You got me there 😂
RWBY too.
Edit: And Goblin Slayer
I'm kinda iffy on Goblin Slayer. I loved the atmosphere of the first few episodes, but it fell apart for me with the elf, dwarf and lizard. Definitely had some good moments towards the end though
Is there an option for "no annoying, whiney voices"?
I'm not trying to be facetious, I want to watch more than a couple of movies, mostly by Studio Ghibli... Sometimes not even that
Hajime no Ippo, JoJo, Cowboy Bebop, Baccano, Mobile Suit Gundam Z, Mushishi, Fist of the North Star, City Hunter, Kaiji, Akagi, Legend of Galactic Heroes, Akira.
There are some awesome manga. Berserk and Vagabond come to mind.
Stay away from high school slice of life shows.
Stay away from high school slice of life shows.
You'll miss out on the "*blushes* i-i-indirect k-k-k-k-k-ki-ki-kissu??!!" though
God yeah.
I hate that SOOO much.
Miss me with that stupid tsundere stuff.

^^^It's ^^^not ^^^like ^^^I ^^^really ^^^like ^^^it ^^^or ^^^anything... ^^^^Baka!
Then I’ll get pregnant!!!!!! AAAHHHH!!!!!!
NANI?!!!!
jojo? MIIIIIISTAAAAA
The Berserk anime, 1997 I think but definitely not the new ones, is so good until you get blue balled cause they thought they were gonna get to make more and then didn't
Do you think the above chart applies to their equivalent manga? I have more patience with reading than watching.
I think most of the time the manga is a better experience. With anime, there is low budgets and that hurts quality. There are some exceptions though.
The Goblin Slayer manga is waaay better than the anime, simply because the anime’s production values were so bad. The One Piece manga is also far better than the anime, which has horrible quality in the past several seasons.
But there are a couple of examples of where the anime actually has better quality. Attack Titan and Hunter x Hunter are examples.
Of course, with the manga, you usually have more content and the scenes are set better and with better artistry, so you can really take your time to admire the beauty of the drawings.
Steins Gate came from a visual novel and it’s hard to compare it to the anime. You get a pretty different experience between the two and its hard for me to say which is better. The Visual Novel has the advantage of being far longer in content and having nice background music. But the quality of animation for its anime was well done and it really brings the story to life.
Thanks for the detailed response! Will look into these!
That movie had everything going against it; Japanese animation, a film with a "message", completed before the source comic book had finished its run.
Gorram I loved it, though. Watched it multiple times in high school. Even bought the soundtrack. Could only get the English dub.
Check out the director Satoshi Kon
Attack on Titan, Mob Psycho 100, OPM, Cowboy Bebop, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (acquired taste though). I haven't watched many anime, but these are solid ones without much cringe
EDIT: For movie goers, Redline (2009) might be up you guys' alley. It's free on YouTube and one of the best animated films imo
Eh, I wouldnt really put AoT in that group. Their voices aren't whiny but they do scream sentences randomly.
They aren't random tbh... They do fit what we know about the characters... But some are loud, I'll say that...
I can deal with a lot of the standard anime voices but God damn was AoT so fucking annoying. Stop crying screaming everything you fucking pussy and why are adults listening to this pussy cry scream and being like ooOOooHhh I get it. Idk what this guy is thinking putting it up there. He's gonna scare people off of anime
I'm not into anime but I tried to watch AoT because it sounded so cool. The dialogue is just so annoying and childish. I would be just about getting interested then someone says something and it completely took me out of the experience.
It's a shame because the idea was really interesting.
I can't really say much about S1, because I watched it when I was a weeb, but I've seen the lasts seasons and yeah, you're right, the main character is obnoxious and childish, but it gets better imo. I also find the action sequences and the idea to be worth it eitherway
Someone said that it is of a type that is meant for basically young adults. I am guessing maybe the culture somehow is not offended by gratuitous violence but at the same time still have the mind of a child and thus the characters act that way?
I am not sure, but the premise is so good that when I have the will I will go through a few episodes.
When I asked before I got many more "adult" recommendations but I sort of just left them alone because I was not sure if I wanted to go down that path.
Eh, if you can't help but cringe at things, than that's just what it is. That's my main issue with a lot of anime as well
I think thats true of any Young Adult series even American ones. Things like Harry Potter are the exception where it just happened to be interesting and not super corny.
Full disclosure, I don't really like HP either but I don't cringe at it like how I did with say, Ready Player One.
Are you sure you aren't a teenager with the amount of "cringing" you do?
Quality gatekeeping.
Attack on Titan? Really? I'm tempted to disregard all of your other recommendations based on that alone
Damn, AoT is one of my favourites out of them tbh. Had no idea so many people had a lot of gripes with the show.
My original gripe was "no annoying voices", and you suggested a series that is 80%
grrrr
aahhh
hnnnn
and yelling the other character's name.
Lol I stopped watching AoT because I couldn't bear to hear Eren yelling all the time, it was so irritating. At one point it looked like he died (early in season 1) and I was happy, only to be dismayed when he appeared in the next scene.
Cowboy Bebop has that one female character that is whiney to the max. So that doesn't work as a suggestion.
I auit watching AoT because it was nonstop whining
Newer kyoani stuff has decent voice actors, Hibike! Euphonium has amazing voice acting.
Mushishi is great.
Check out Cowboy Bebop and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. I can’t watch the majority of anime because of annoying voices (and other stuff that just makes me uncomfortable), but the voice acting in both of these shows is superb and they never do any of the cringey shit you’ll see in a typical anime.
It’s very important that you watch Bebop dubbed (English voice acting) and the sub version of Jojo (Japanese voice acting).
Cowboy Bebop at his computer...
Mushi shi definitely
Planetes is great
Try Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Japanese voice acting is something that takes a while to get used to. I’d suggest watching english dubs until you really get into it, the My Hero Academia dub is pretty great as well as the Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood one.
You might enjoy this bread on a shit sandwich until you get used to the shit.
In the meantime, here's the alternative of dog shit sandwich to get you used to the shit.
No these are legitimately good shows that you can enjoy without the annoying voice acting that some people grow to like.
I'm going to absolutely disagree with you on that.
I said I don't like the voice acting on almost all of the Japanese animation I've seen.
Your response was "It may sound bad but..."
I'm sorry. Audio is the biggest part of any film media. Dodgy image quality can be forgiven more than dodgy sound design.
The original material has voice acting that has literally had me turning to the TV and shushing it. Without even thinking. I told the TV to shut up because the noise disguised as dialogue grated so hard against my face holes.
To get an audio translation into a completely foreign language... Like completely foreign. No shared grammar, emphasis on syllables completely different. To get a dub even vaguely working is an impressive feat.
I'm never impressed by someone that can excel in puppy kicking, no matter what the artistry involved.
You saying that the original voice acting "takes some getting used to" and I should listen to the sub par English dub is like saying
Here we are in a well built log cabin. Enjoy the scenery here, and there's some top quality artists here to render it.
We're going to drown some kittens at the same time.
If you're not up for drowning kittens, here's some puppies you can have a go at.
Quanzhi Gaoshou, but that's Chinese not Japanese animation
Nobody recommended it yet, but Naoki Urasawa's Monster is fantastic and the English dub is excellent.
I think it was only animated for convenience. It could have easily been live action but filming on location would have been really hard and really expensive and changing the story to the location they dod have wasn't an option.
To my knowledge nobody is streaming it or making use of the license right now so you'd probably have set sail to find it, but it's more than worth it.
Cowboy Bebop is one of the only animes that has good English dubs. Also it's just a fantastic show.
Bebop baby!!!
I think it's time to blow this scene.
🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷
Get everybody and their stuff together.
Okay, 3, 2, 1...
Bada da da dadaaaaa daaaaaa
Bada da da dadaaaaa daaaaaa

Space cowboy
Or reign the conquer?
Bebop then stop, that's the ticket.
Mushroooooooooom huntinnnnnggggh
Add Space Dandy!
Yes! Super underrated anime!
Greatest zombie episode ever.
You know it, baby! This is one of the most fun space adventure anime out there.
Where’s Shin Chan?!
Goddamn it's the best and most wholesome of them all!
To be a man you must have honor; honor and a PEEEENIS!
Asking the real question here. Thank you for reminding me dude, I'm gonna watch some Shin Chan now.
Yo, where’s my boy Mr Elephant at?
Is Beserk on the list?
Of course!
I was almost ready to flip when I didn’t see it. Then I thought that maybe it was just because the anime doesn’t do it justice. Then I saw that you included it with that addendum. Perfection.
Quick question: i've seen everywhere that the anime doesnt do justice to the Manga, and that the Manga is 10/10
Is the anime "great but not God tier" or is it "meh"?
So there are a few different animes. There's the old one, the three newer movies on Netflix, and a new series. The old one and the Netflix movies take place during the same time which is basically a prolonged flashback in the manga. They're both pretty good, but they leave a lot to be desired. The older anime is more in depth and includes more key character moments, and the Netflix movie suffers from some crappy CGI that improves a bit, but they're both generally serviceable. The newest anime picks up a bit later in the story but has terrible CGI and direction, making it a sub par adaptation. Basically, if you're interested then use either of the older animes as a jumping off point, but the manga is just such high quality in terms of illustration, storytelling, worldbuilding, and character drama that no adaptation really does it justice.
The 2016 anime is "WTF".
It skips parts of the manga but if you haven't read it, that doesn't matter much although you do miss out on some back story.
The real WTF is the animation itself, because the studio had trouble automating textures or something, and as a result wound up using some overly blocky and obvious CGI. It's so bad it's good at times--Mozgus is artistically scary and creepy because he's so weird looking. CGI is super obvious everywhere starting in the first episode.
Still worth watching imo. Watch the 2016 stuff first so your expectations are lower, then head back to the 90s and watch the first anime, then the movies. The movies can be stomach turning in places.
I personally enjoyed it for the most part. Mostly action, interesting plot, minimal banter or meaningless dialogue. Worked for me. My roommate went on to read the manga to get more into the story. I’m sure what you’ve heard is true but I’d watch the anime(s) again any day.
The 1997 anime was really good, just got cut short so it kinda blueballs you. Definitely worth a watch and they're all on YouTube. It's also got a solid English dub which I think a lot of anime's are lacking.
At the bottom end of this graph. Just where the legend should be.
Thanks a lot
So imma not reading this and watch jojo anyway
Want something different? -> Are you okay with lean, muscular men? -> H O M O S E X U A L I T Y ? -> Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
I feel like JJBA's got a major stack overflow going on in that category.
We need that
... Yuri on ice would like to have a word
Yeah just looking if JJBA is here and continue scrolling Reddit
I couldn't find JoJo did I miss it or is this missing it
Under Action/Adventure - Ready for a joyride? the last arrow, old school comic style
GOODBYE GUIDE-O
JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOJO!
The only logical choice really.
So you a man are a man of culture
I don’t think Jojo’s on here but someone else mentioned it’s a few years out of date so that probably explains it.
Red Action/Adventure box, look to the right for the blue “ready for the joyride” box then 10 down is Jojo
[deleted]
Yes JoJo is one of if not the best shonen anime ever made. It has amazing fight scenes, amazing characters, funny commedy and some very sad moments. Additionaly JJBA has amazing mostly friendly fanbase. JoJo is also divided into many parts so dont be scares of big number of episodes because every part is something fresh with new characters, new villains, new or improved powers etc. Currently David Production (the company responsibile for animating JoJo) is realisng part 5 which is really good. Just remember to start from the first part (it can be a little hard to watch it but its worth it trust me). TL;DR yes, definitely
Part 2 is best part
There are no best parts, jojo is simply the best
Meh stands abandoned a good magic system for fight of the week style stuff. IMO JoJo should have ended at season 2.
Everyone has opinions, but i love the creativity that stands can bring. Hamon shouldn't have been dumped though. Btw read part 7, it has something similar to hamon
I only watch the anime, I can't get into mangas...but I get the whole creative thing, I just myself don't like the new system. Feels like a Saturday morning kids show now with the one or two episode arcs.
Toradora is really hard on the feels
Not compared to the others, but yes.
I thought Toradora was pretty heavy... Then I watched AnoHana. I was not prepared.
Need a good laugh? Watches Toradora
Surprised they didn't put White Album 2 in the romantic comedy genre while they were at it
I'm not big on anime and watched tornadoes with friends, but I don't remember much of it other than it was alright to watch but didn't grab me.
The only other anime I've watched and liked are Elfenlied and Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls. I also watched most of Soul Eater, but it didn't really grab me.
I also watched MM! with a friend, but that's not for me at all.
Somebody please tell me they found Trigun on this list. I've looked 3 times and can't see it.
It's in the second section.
Thanks!
[deleted]
Trigun also looks old animation-wise at this point.
[deleted]
It is, but it's not a great way to introduce a beginner to modern anime standards. 90s animation styles are in the minority now. If you started with Trigun, you're like me, and you have to admit what was once common stylistically is now very niche.
I saw trigun first which was the reason i even read the whole list xD
So fricken good
It’s on there. Under the Action/Adventure section, look for the “ Ready for a joyride” text box. Scroll down until you see a blue box with the words “Types of sci-fi” and look to the left. You will see Trigun with dash lines around its box.
Thank you!!
Could not find. Am filled with confusion.
It's there, look harder.
The others found it, it's there, everything's okay. Deep breath. 😋
[deleted]
True, but the flowchart is useful tho and a lot of the recommendations are “beginnerfriendly” I guess. Couldne organized better but great work!
[deleted]
I feel like beginner friendly are shows that don't rely on Japanese culture/references, have any of the "weird" things that anime can be known for, and are generally straightforward plot wise.
I really want to recommend Kill La Kill to people but the sexualization of teenage girls in that particular anime makes it a very hard sell.
The ironic thing about Kill la Kill is it has a strong cast of well written female characters who dont just exist for the sake of male characters, which is something you cant say for a tonne of shows with one tenth the fanservice.
There's a thing by a feminist writer called a "Bechdel Test". It requires a scene in which 2 women, who are major characters, talk to each other about something that isn't a man.
There are a surprising number of major popular films (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc) that fail this test.
Somebody pointed out that the show Keijo!!!!!!!! (Yes, 8 Exclamation marks) never had a scene that failed this test, as the characters were all women, and they never talked about men.
It's a show about a sport where women in swimsuits try to push each other into water using only their breasts or their bottoms.
It's actually an amazing show that's hilarious and surprisingly gripping at times
Also, one girl has hypno-titties. 10/10 show.
Just say "ackshually its a satire."
Which it is. A very sexy satire
"I would recommend it, but you'd have to watch 30 sexy schoolgirls series first."
Kill la Kill is dependant on the viewer being aware of anime tropes, tho. It's as much a parody on the genre as anything else
Welp adding this one to the list of shows to watch
I feel like the first episode is one of the hardest for Psycho-Pass, and if you can get through that you'll be fine with what the rest of the series will throw at you.
Well really it’s only beginner friendly in the first part but once it gets to extended it feels overwhelming
Well, I find that guides are usually either scientifically accurate or based on opinion. This happens to be based on opinion as you can't really scientifically prove that someone will enjoy the same show you did. It's just a guideline, though and a great one at that.
But that's just my opinion.
It's a list of recommendations based on someones personal opinions and knowledge about the subject. What's wrong with that?
DEFINITELY someone's personal taste, and you can also sort of tell when they wrent super into a genre because the recommendation is awful.
One that pops out to me is Devil is a part timer. That show has some minorly funny stuff but half of it is only funny if you've been into anime for a bit and know of a few tropes. theres not much if any storyline, and overall its just not a great show. (personal taste). I feel like a recommendation guide should have stuff that 99% of people, especially new people, would enjoy. I'd arguably say space brothers is a better workplace comedy, but the comedy aspect sort of takes a back seat to the slice of life aspect.
that being said theres a lot of solid recs
I think it was made in collaboration on /r/anime so not one person's tastes.
I'd argue this guide is pretty fair though. This has a little of everything and I'd say most of it is pretty on point for what I'd consider accessible.
poor taste. sorry dude or dudette.
Edgelord alert
I'm not getting it. u/tiradium's all like "this aint no guide, just some yahoos personal taste" {+179}, I agree and add 'poor' taste (my opinion) and go out of my way to be non-genderish? {-20}, and then some buttwad calls me an "Edgelord"? Can I call she/he a pussy?
He said it's personal taste , you bashed said persons taste huge difference . One is someone factually stating it might be biased . Whereas you just tried to bash his/her suggestions, probably because most of the animes listed are more mainstream rather than because of actual content of said anime. One is someone actually stating a valid opinion the other(you) is just trying to act cool.
recommending bakemonogatari for beginners
oh no
Nope nope nope
I love Monogatari, it's my absolute favorite anime, but between the toothbrush scene, the fact that a panty shot shown in the first minute of the first episode is actually super important to the plot, Araragi being a lolicon, and the confusing to follow timeline, it's just too much for a first time recommendation. I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone who's okay with really weird shit and someone who wants really good dialogue, but never a first time watcher.
What really hooked me was the vastly different camera shots. The scenes were setup and paced so differently, it was really refreshing.
Then I dove in, got lost, realised its just turned into a meaningless mess and left
I have watched a grand total of 2 seasons of anime in my entire life but I watched My name yesterday and I think anyone can enjoy it. It doesn't have any many anime clichés so I'd say it feels pretty close to Western animation. It's a movie and it's 2 hours long. Basically if you don't watch it you're missing out, it's damn good.
Your Name is a fucking amazing movie and everyone needs to watch it.
Watched it a few weeks ago!
Another film that came out around the same time was A Silent Voice and they were often compared.
I personally think they're very different, but they're both phenomenal films.
It's not a Romance.
It's a story about Redemption.
They also both have amazing sound tracks (The song from the trailer above, "Lit", is one of my favourite pieces of music) It's on Netflix in some places. It's also on Google Movies.
I got to see Your Name in cinema, and I was pissed that I missed A Silent Voice, but when I finally saw it, I was glad that I saw it alone.
I went through thus just to make sure Jojo's is here, not dissapointed.
Where is it? I can’t find it
Edit: Mvm, found it, not where I expected
Far right, under ready for the joy ride.
Hey, it's right!
I was not fucking ready for PMMM.
That show went to some unexpected places. Solid recommendation.
What's PMMM?
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
I was because my friend once spoiled the entire plot for me. Literally just sat there for like an hour and a half describing everything that happens.
Eventually, I was like, "Wow, that goes places. How far into the series is that?" And he said that was the whole thing.
Apparently he didn't think I was going to watch it, so he just told me the entire story. 😓
Still watched it. Still loved it. Rewatched it after convincing my siblings to give it a try and enjoyed their reactions. No, they weren't ready.
Easily up there among the anime I enjoyed. The way the story just slams into you with no cushioning is quality, glad I wasn't warned before watching it.
No Gundam?? That’s like the first thing that came to my mind for “Wanna see Giant Robots??”
It's there in the extended bit at the bottom, but I find their choices a bit questionable.
This chart is heavily weighed down by gravity.
My favorite comment.
So what would be a good Gundam series to start with? I'm newer into anime and like the concept of Gundam so where should I start?
If it helps I've seen Bebop, FMA:Brotherhood, as well as RWBY and gen:Lock (I've had someone tell me before those are western anime and don't count, but I liked em so I don't care)
00 would probably be the best one to start with since it is one of the newer series that is the most accessible. It is the only Gundam show to stay in the AD era, every other series goes into various other timelines
Sounds good thanks! I'll look into it
Also fair warning that it isn’t part of the main Gundam continuity, so you don’t need to start with a show that is 40 years old or watch something else to get context. 00 is purely its own thing, and in order goes season 1,2 then the movie Awakening the Trailblazer
Thanks for all the help. Appreciate it.
For a quick rundown on Gundam series:
There's a few different "gundam universes"/ timelines, generally they have no connection to each other.
The main ones and their series/movies in rough chronological order:
Other than them the only other multi-series one is IBO which is split into 2 seasons.
Wow there are a lot more Gundam series then I thought there was
Yeah there's been a lot throughout the years.
Though there's only roughly another 8 series that wasn't mentioned in that post.
There's also a damned lot of games, novels and mangas. They sure get a lot done.
Start with The Origin. It’s on Hulu. It’s Gundam 101. The 3 recommended are the Gundam equivalent to the Star Wars prequels. They’re good, I’ll watch them but they’re not the definitive Gundam series.
My personally biased recommendations would probably be the original MSG movie trilogy (too old for the kids these days no doubt), G Gundam and for a more recent one iron blooded orphans, also been hearing good things about origin the other dude mentioned.
It’s under action/adventure, they recommended watching OO, wing, and seed first. Screeches in Universal Century
This entire guide is invalidated
My thoughts exactly
queues up live action Gundam and promptly commits sudoku
Do you mean seppuku
Lol, I did/n't.
UC as a whole is not beginner anime at this point. My favorite though by far
The Origin is on Hulu and is a very good beginner anime. Honestly you can go to Unicorn right after which is another good beginner. Wing is definitely not for beginners. It’s just kinda like learning mythology before you learn history. Also I wouldn’t recommend any of those to beginners because they’re not very representative of Gundam as whole. Honestly if you’re going to recommend those you might as well recommend any of the Build Fighters series. They’re basically Yugioh with Gundams so that would be more beginner friendly than the other 3.
What’s the go-to for families.
This is not for humans capable of such normal social interactions that would lead to a family.
I feel personally attacked.
Gundam Build Fighters
I second Build Fighters. It’s more about the Gunpla (Gundam Models) being used in a simulator to replicate battles but it’s basically a game like Yugioh. The kids on the show build and customize suits from the other Gundam series so it’s a lot more colorful and directed towards kids. The cool thing is you could buy gunpla kits and build them with your kids. I enjoyed the series because I build r/gunpla and watching it helps me be more creative. I guess it’s a meta Gundam but definitely family friendly.
For real, how the fuck is Gundam not one of the foundation recommendations under mecha?
Well, see you guys in 4 months.
Just watching a couple then?
This is easily 5000 episodes. It’s taking more than 4 months
I think way more
Not much of an expert, but enjoyed Seven Deadly Sins on Netflix.
Same here! Was hoping to find some similar anime recommendations. I'll leave a recommendation for you! I also really liked Blue Exorcist a lot, I think you will too since you enjoyed Seven Deadly Sins. Pretty different, but I liked them both for similar reasons.
Most of the anime under the Action/Adventure category are similar to Seven Deadly Sins/Blue Exorcist. I'd recommend Hunter x Hunter, My Hero Academia, and FMA Brotherhood.
Definitely a fun anime. I didn't like the DBZ-esque one-upping where they kept revealing that one of the protagonists is actually stronger than everyone else now during the second season. It was certainly fun, don't get me wrong, I watched all of DBZ (and much of DBS), but it wasn't very creative. At least one of the most powerful characters has their power under certain conditions, like JJBA's Stands.
Same here man. That's easily my favorite anime.

Angel Beats! and Clannad are good comedies that have emotional moments, and they don't tend to cheapen those moments with unnecessary humour or slapstick like others (*cough Your Lie in April *cough**)
Currently
Works for me.
Are you me? The only anime I've ever properly watched is Evangelion, and I've watched it about 6 times.
Missing out on others bud
I've often thought that tbh, I saved this graphic.
You poor person. Hugs.
Ready for 21th
Is there anything worse then people who say eva ruined anime for them because nothing will compare?
People who assume.
Never said that was you. Just if there was anything worse. So yea your right. People like yourself that assume
You're a cheerful person.
I shit on eggs
Thanks. I'm new to anime & This is gonna be helpful.

I mean, they'll be having a good laugh when they back here looking at this wondering if they misread or some sht.
Holy fuck, I hope the author got paid for that. I realize it’s unlikely they did.
People on the internet feel a compulsive need to recommend anime.
I've not experienced it with anything else but I notice it constantly on Reddit.
As soon as you mention anime, people will start recommending shows. Sometimes they wait until you say what you liked, sometimes they actually care to ask you, and sometimes they phrase it as just a "Oh I really liked this one anime called ____", but if you mention anime on Reddit, given enough comments, somebody will start recommending shows.
And it's nearly always the same beginner shounen anime. Even if you just explicitly said you don't like shounen...
Even in real life a lot of anime fans feel a compulsive need to recommend and discuss. To everyone I’ve bored, I’m sorry
Outdated or not, .hack was the far superior trapped onnthe internet venre show. It still holds up
The 2nd season of almost all animes I've seen so far was shit. They always have amazing ideas they plough through in the first season and try to one up themself in the 2nd...it never works.
Death Note, Attack on Titan, Overlord...They all went downhill so fast.
Attack on Titan has a very strong third season. The 2nd part of season 3 is especially amazing and 100% worth the watch. But I agree with Overlord, that just got insanely boring and not much happened.
Ok, I give attack on titan another chance. I was just disappointed. The premise was so simple, then suddenly it exploded with new plotpoints which all felt artifical and forced.
Same with Death Note. Him against L, was simple but great storytelling. Then all of the sudden the dynamics changed, new characters where added, another demon....it lost all its charme.
It's like anime writers do not understand the KISS principle. Just keep it simple.
Attack on titan in the 3rd season and what is gonna happen next week expands into just the craziest shit from just humans surviving to actually trying to live and finally learning the truth about their world its def worth watching through but your 100% right about death note post L is utter trash and where i stop on rewatches every time
If you ask me, the expanded and increasingly complex storyline of AoT from S2 onwards is what lends the series it's beauty. Otherwise it would just be a generic action anime with a unique reskin, wouldn't it?
Death Note... Well, the first half was simply great so the 2nd couldn't match it. I still liked the 2nd half but yeah... It wasn't as great as the first.
Maybe s02 just wasn't my cup of tea. I'll give it a another try though.
Thing that bugged me is that I wouldn't have been bored with 2-3 season only happening inside the city with them just defending and fighting. There's enough there to make it interesting. I like simplicity more then just throwing a lot of things out and see what sticks. Samurai champloo for example, 2 season, whole anime, one story, fantastic anime.
To each his own I guess but AoT is a well thought out story. It isn't just throwing in stuff and seeing what sticks. Once things start unraveling, it becomes even more interesting.
Anime tends to be simple at start and then overwhelm with second season which makes some things seem forced. Third season is when you usually get used to it and except the changes and start really liking it. This isn’t even really anime I guess just a pattern a lot of story driven shows follow.

Indeed, S2 was pretty slow with the lizardman arc, but S3 if anything speeds through things.
Like hell, their op contains a bunch of characters that literally appear for aprox 2 episodes.
If anything S3 needs to slow down not speed up.
The dramas are rarely written with 2nd season in mind. I think that's just the way in the Anime business. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a rare exception because 1) it's a reboot (which it's already rare in itself) and 2) it's faithful to its completed source material
Watched it, that one was good.
Death Note got bad after the girl was introduced. My Hero Academia manages to have a second season that surpasses the first one though.
Anime with slower pacing tend to work better, true. Dragonball, one piece, naruto, hunter etc don't have this problem but they overall need more time to get going.
Go watch jjba, it wont disappoint
I tried. I even made a screenshot off the scene that was too much for me.
The way he was posing was so over the top...I just couldn't :D Still no idea if this was intentional comical or tried to be badass.
I went through all 8 parts and even I can't tell if it's comical or not :D thanks for giving it a try though
Wouldn't say Overlord went downhill fast.
Sure S2 is pretty slow, but S3 is pretty good.
It changed the narrative. It's not even the pacing that was off. It was simple and that made it fun. I liked the one punch man vibe of him just being overpowered. That's what I liked. S2 had soooo many new characters. And he was good and bad at the same time...no idea.
People told me here it's the same with attack on titan. Maybe it's only the 2nd season. Maybe they need it to collect good ideas for the third season.
Strange, they sorta made it clear that was going to be the plot even in S1.
I guess so. My problem wasn't even a specific thing. It was the 4 storylines with new characters, lizard people, his henchmen etc all at the same time. It was too convoluted. It was just too different from what I initially liked about the first season.
The first season was him being a "nice" evil lord defeating underleveled monsters.
InitialD has a great second season (and a few more after that), goes a bit downhill in the final seasons tho)
What about one punch man?season 2 came out and it’s pretty damn good
Yeah that's still pretty damn great! Mob psycho 100 is also fun so far.
Agree every time an anime gets season 2 it's usually worst than season1 the only anime that I can think of that gets better with each season is probably rhe monogatari series
I thought Clannad was a really good exception. Season two was really strong, the ending may be controversial but the season itself might even have been stronger than the first.
I can highly recommend Paranoia Agent, too bad the series is only known by few..
Thanks for the guide and the work you put in, good job!
Honestly hated it as I came expecting some proper mystery and investigations then got sciencefiction.
Neon Genesis Evangelion should be somewhere at the top.
[deleted]
Yeah, the teen angst is not for everyone.
But yet we have Death Note right there at the tippy peak.
Yeah, I wouldnt recommend Death Note to everyone either, but to be fair I barely even remember it.
Yeah. All I'm trying to get at is that "angst filled teenager" is not the reason Evangelion is inaccessible for a lot of new comers.
Actually, it's pretty great for a beginner - it's so wildly different that it is fairly accessible. You don't need a deep understanding of Japanese culture to get the themes of the show, it's a coming of age story (that is common in western culture) subverted, twisted, and taken on a crazy ride.
It may not be ideal if you're trying to optimize converting someone to anime, but honestly, IDK if your goal should be to convert people to your own hobbies.
It's one of frist ones I seen when I was getting serious about watching it. Thank you Japanese community channel. I
I begun with NGE. :o
It has the greatest path though on this list in my opinion.
[deleted]
I don't know how to respond to this. Did you have something wrong on your clipboard when you tried to post?
Yeah, first manga I ever picked up around 8 years old. Those naked chick scenes... Hahahaha
NGE is by far my favorite anime
It also buries Gundam way too deep, homogenizes all the series into one, and proceeds to recommend the worst (or least Gundam-like) Gundam series. Pretty disappointing.
Where the fuck is Pokémon and OPM? Can’t find them
The guide, made by u/lukeatlook, was made a couple years ago. So it's missing a few good recent anime.
Pokémon is old as shit
Haha, I was referring to OPM
OPM was released in 2015 I think
It must've been made before then cause I have no idea how he forgot about OPM lol
It was, the guide was made sep 2015, OPM first aired oct 2015.
It is also a pretty terrible anime
You sound like a weeb who evaluates and judges anime too much.
Lol ok. It not like in saying it doesnt measure up to me high class of anime taste. It just has a very bland plot with little to no character growth. It doesnt even matter that it is an anime. It suffers from the same boring reputation as the walking dead. Ash always continues to make the same mistakes and it just stays a very simple show. Granted I haven't watched it since like gen 3 so if that has changed I apologize.
The newer shit is ok. I realized my mistakes.
Am sorry.
Old shit is bland tho
Was he one of the guys doing the GoT 'episode context for non readers' I think I remember his username from those posts.
Hah! Yes, that was me. Nice to see someone remember it.
So idk if it’s white, say goodnight.
I think this predates OPM. The Pokemon anime isnt very good.
Ahem. Commit pikachu thunderbolt to head.
It wasn't at the time. I've heard really good things about the recent seasons of Pokemon.
The seasons are pretty great, especially the XYZ arc, but now the "adventures" on Alola, that's another story. Good god, these last 2? 3? seasons are really, really boring. Maybe because I'm used to the old look of Pokémon (Ash and Pikachu are drawn in a different fashion), but I've got the feeling that there's not really a storyline in Alola.
Did I ever feel ripped off when i found out that the Alolan stuff didn't continue the story from XYZ.
it says no 100+ episode series, which discounts pokemon. besides it being mediocre.
Says the sad fucker who didn’t watch Pokémon growing up. No, he went and became a weeb
And OP is like 12 episodes
I did watch it growing up. It was fun, and it influenced me to play the games.
As a weeb who's seen plenty of anime though, it's not good by any stretch of the imagination.
If by OP you mean One Punch Man, I've already seen other commenters tell you that this guide is old and was made before OPM,[ first submitted september 2015] (https://old.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/3m45vh/the_ultimate_anime_recommendation_flowchart/), several months before the first episode of OPM aired.
Then I don’t know what the fuck OP is, only OPM.
Sorry for what I said.
Pokémon is still 6-7/10
The games are better
I'd put pokemon at a 5-6 personally. The animation/art is usually ok, but the plot usually ends up being super long-winded, with lots of episodes full of inconsequential characters just for the sake of showcasing pokemon. I think this gets better with returning characters in the later series iirc, though I've honestly not watched enough of the more recent series to be sure.
Nothing spectacular, but nothing that makes it complete dogshit. Just an average show with it's stronger parts and it's weaker parts.
I haven’t seen any other anime besides Pokémon and OPM so I love both and will defend both will extreme prejudice
use this guide as a chance to change that! There's a lot of good shows on there (lots I didn't enjoy as much too but hey)
I have no clue how to stream ~~hentai~~ anime
Netflix has trash and I don’t know how to work Crunchyroll and don’t care to
if I ever have to stream I use 9anime, but I'll typically download because it's simpler for me.
IDK about which region you're in, but Netflix does have SOME good shows, even if the overall majority is trash. UK has the first season of Attack on Titan, Fate Stay/Night: UBW, Your Lie in April (my personal favourite), FMA brotherhood. Erased was enjoyable, and Tokyo Ghoul's first season was pretty decent iirc, even if it went to dogshit later.
I’ll be watching US Netflix when I get back.
otakustream.tv
Dude I watched Pokemon on VHS tapes until they wore out and stopped working, and I'm a huge weeb.
I went back and watched the first season recently, and it sucks. It's pure nostalgia and I wish I would've left it in the past with a good memory
The seasonal Pokemon anime sucks
Try Pokemon Origins if you want something good
Mhm
"Or aren't worth recommending (SAO)" I got a good giggle out of that
I never understood the hate for the show. The first arc is great.
The first couple of episodes are the shit, but then it just turns into a weird dating show, almost, with Kirito meeting a new girl every episode and they rush the ending of the first season so hard they barely even tie any plot threads up satisfyingly.
I even watched through all that garbage, but what came in season 2 is so beyond garbage I quit in the middle of it and never looked back.
I though Log Horizon would do something more with the great premise, but honestly the guide is spot on when calling it "the boring smart one".
I mean, I get the idea of making the MMO realistic to appeal to gamers, but if I wanted to see some meh animated battles with the same raid boss over and over again I'd just go play an MMO myself. /Rant
season 2 was pretty good imo. idk if you're talking about actual season 2 with GGO + Zekken or arc 2 of season 1, which seems to be a mistake half the haters make tho
I'm talking actual season two. Personally I think it was some of the most embarrassing anime I've ever seen, but to each their own.
rofl nothing will beat watamote for most embarassing
season 2 went from being average to good from start to finish imo, SAO has this weird curve of quality where it drops to absolutely no quality with the alfheim arc in season 1, but it increases from there on out. I certainly wouldn't call season 2 outright bad though, there are plenty more anime that are shittily directed/animated/written that do worse.
I made it all the way through the fantasy game arc (Alfheim, I think? Don't know if that was Season 2 or the second half of Season 1), and man, was I disappointed. They made my favorite character, who was the kick-ass female lead at first, and turned her into a damsel in distress with no agency in the story, complete with a cardboard cutout boring creepy villain and tentacle groping. Between that and the hero being an insufferable Mary Sue (which he already was but now he doesn't have the interesting love interest to make up for it), I just couldn't enjoy it.
To anyone who likes SAO, good for you. Really. I like it when people enjoy stories that I don't. We just have different tastes, and I'm sorry, but you're probably not going to be able to change my mind about it.
I just could never get into it. I watched the first arc, and it was okay. I can understand why people like it. I think it's mostly cause it's the same thing over and over.
It's like the grilled cheese of anime. There's nothing wrong with grilled cheese, but it doesn't exactly push the boundaries of the culinary process so when so many people like the plain old grilled cheese so, so much others push back. They revolt against the affront of liking something simple and overdone. You see the same reaction to Nickleback.
Its my favorite anime series. I love the action mixed with romance. I love the inside a video game genre. I love the characters. Yeah it has some flaws and I thought season 1 got too rushed at a point, but I still like the show more than any other anime that I've seen.
I only came here for the 'reeeee weebs' comments.
Haha same

How can I get to Shigatsu?
Put your lie in April down there next to Clannad and I'll be happy.
Now for the next time I’m fucked.
[deleted]
Your lie in April isn't a shonen in the slightest, don't worry.
Your lie in April is the opposite of a shonen, it’s very similar in feels to clannad.
shiner
Oh shit lmao, autocorrect doesn’t take kindly to Japanese terms I guess.
As a noob to anime, I really appreciate this. I am so overwhelmed with where to start, but this helps.
It's also good to know I'm sorta starting on the right foot. My first anime is full Metal alchemist but the original. I've already heard that the original was not a good choice for some reason.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with the original FMA- both series are fantastic and worth watching, they just have different strengths and weaknesses.
I agree. I was a bit offended when they said it wasn't as good of a show. I love it.
Yeah, if you're into getting your darkness through build-up and emotional attachment, I hear the 2003 anime is better for it. If you want it to hit hard and fast, Brotherhood is really good at that, but leaves out a lot of the character development. Brotherhood also focuses a lot more on the fights themselves than the 2003 anime, to the minor detriment of their context.
I think it's way better to start with the original. Not only does brotherhood fly through the first couple of arcs because almost everyone watching will have already watched FMA, both stories are worth experiencing but someone is far more likely to go FMA->FMA:B than the other way round.
I’d strongly suggest My Hero Academia as your second show, I didn’t see it on the chart but it’s perfect for newer anime watchers.
The original was made before the manga it was based on was finished. As such they had to start making things up on their own towards the end and its generally considered weaker due to that.
Personally I think a fan of the series should watch both. the first half of original FMA was done better I think; Brotherhood, which adheres to the manga story completely, condenses and hurries through the first several arcs, not giving them as much screen time as they wanted to get to the new material quickly. This means those early arcs (Leore, Tucker, Hughes) don't hit nearly as hard as they did in the original.
I also liked FMA's take on Lust a lot more. She's a tragic character you can almost sympathize with at points, she's much more of a straight up bad guy in Brotherhood.
Both series are great but I think people should start with the original since those early arcs are just so damned good.
Word cloud out of all the comments.
Fun bot to vizualize how conversations go on reddit. Enjoy
I need a curated list of anime that has no extremely high pitched female voices
Kara no kyoukai and black lagoon are anime that has a female as the main character without high pitched voices
Jojos

Cool I'll check it out
Magi
What about some decent films, where you don't need to watch a whole series?
Akira? Blood the Last Vampire?
Are there any others which would just be classified as great movies that you can watch one evening without being obsessed with the genre or having to see all the episodes?
A Silent Voice and Your Name are the two big great movies to come out recently that are fantastic.
also Let me eat your pancreas (as weird as the name sounds its great and has a lot of feels)
Depends on what you're into. For example, the first Ghost in the Shell film is a classic, and it stands on its own:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvBVDibOrgs
Of course there are all the classic Studio Ghibli films, I'm guessing you're familiar with them already, but if not then I'd suggest starting with Princess Mononoke:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPs1C4277wE
I'd also say that Cowboy Bebop The Movie is one that works as a standalone film without having to watch the series:
I don't understand Princess Mononoke. I think I've tried watching it three times but don't remember anything from it and pretty sure I just fell asleep.
Love the other ones however. Especially the one with the people turning into pigs, which is amazing.
Maybe I need to give the Princess another go. Haven't tried in a few years.
Perhaps Princess Mononoke isn't for everyone, I've introduced it to other people who didn't like it, but it's one of my favourite animated films.
Good call, Blood was gorgeous.
Redline
Great watch.
Man i used to be into Anime when I was in HS but now, IDK what it is none of them grab me. I watched Blue Exprsist for a bit and Psychopass but I dont know why it all seems so different. I grew up reading AKIRA, Inu-Yasha and like Ranma 1/2.
You would probably like Hellsing. Non stop action, no bullshit, it's great. Each episode is 45osh minutes long, and there's only 12 episodes
I was acctualy at the heling pre-screening at FanimeCon in like....2006 I think haha. I love me some Helsing.
Owow that's pretty cool!!
It was rad, same year they debut Gaia online so I was on there at release too. I think I was like 17 haha
Looking for your first anime to watch?
Immediately uses another anime as a reference comparison.
Is Avatar really considered Anime though? That's more of an American cartoon that incorporates some aspects of anime.
Not sure on the detail, but from an outside perspective (I stopped watching anime in middle school but still know some from cultural osmosis), I can tell you yes, it is. It has the same style. Beyond that, it's specifically using that style and story elements common to anime (chosen one, battling fighters with special fighting skills). The setting is also in an asian-esque fantasy world.
None of this stuff may be exclusive to anime, but put together it's all meant to be that style. Just because it's an american creation doesn't mean it's not in the genre.
Yeah I just feel like even if it is considered Anime, it was created for an American audience, so it would still be kind of daunting coming from that show and trying to figure out a foreign anime to watch. So I think it makes sense in the chart.
This is obviously anecdotal, but I knew a lot of people that were Avatar fans but never watched any other Anime
The majority of the series was handled by a South Korean studio. I guess its technically not anime in the traditional Japanimation sense.. but by more modern standards it seems to fall very clearly under that label.
There wasn’t a “no” category to that question.
I don't understand what you're saying. Indeed it's assuming you are looking for anime to watch, but I don't see how it changes the point. It's just a subtitle to the chart in function.
Why the hell is there an “Incest” category? What is this, Alabama?
Clearly you've never watched anime
No chromo
I’m so glad somebody remembers Samurai Flamenco that shit was fire
Wow. I totally need to watch some of these
Holy shit. I knew the first ones and thought "how many do i miss of this list?" as I saw about 8 animes. That thing is really gigantic
So where would the overlord series fit into this chart ?
Simply curious.
It was listed as a footnote under log horizon with .hack
So it is.
Thank you.
I didn't get anime until Kill Bill Volume 2 (literally, I didn't understand Pokemon or anything until a decade or more later). Blood and actual human atrocities to ourselves (but separating it from ourselves via another media) made it make sense.
If that's you, Elfen Lied. Prepare for a John Wick....and anime harem things.
Attack on Titan also transferred itself well for my tastes.
Cutsie wutsie breaks: Little Witch Academia. I don't mean it as an insult, dramas, even as you binge them, need a light-hearted break. This is a great example of an anime version of that if you're wanting to stay immersed. It's a cute version of witch-only Harry Potter, anime-only.
Elfen Lied wasn't really much of a harem show though. Some unrequited love but the dude wasn't looking for play from anyone. I'd call it more of an old school tragedy brought into a futuristic world.
Solid chart, but with some arguable mistakes. I cant believe Code Geass for example is stuck in scifi adventure, when its one of the best written animes out there. On the other hand, mirai nikki was so spot on i chuckled.
Definitely agree on Code Geass being weirdly placed. It took a while to even find it. Yes, it has action and mecha. That is NOT its defining feature in any way!
Can anyone recommend some anime series without overdramatization and fillers?
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Added to my viewing list. Cheers.
make sure to watch at least the first 3 episodes! it can be a bit boring at first but you have to at least finish ep 3
Land of the Lustrous
I recommend steins gate or monogatari series
Steins;Gate sounds interesting, definitely will check it out.
Just a warning, steins gate starts off pretty slow but it gets really good around the second half of the show. Ive had couple of friends give up before it got to the good part, so def try to watch the entire season before you give up on it.
Death Note’s first 13 episodes are pretty low on dramatizations and contain no filler. I’d bail after that though.
Magi. Great world building.
And now I'm going to be binging anime again. It always sucks to me when I find a good one and run out of episodes because I have a really hard time finding new good ones. This gave me at least 3 I want to check out.
An actual coolguide. 👍
[deleted]
Same! It is one of my favorites because it's so calm and simple.
Guys , I've just started watching anime. Started watching Case Closed/Detective Conan. Any reviews for this? Should I continue watching it?
The earlier non-canon episodes are my favorite. I miss the good ol’ traveling w/ friends and solving a murder mystery. Not to say the canon arc isn’t good though. Some of my favorite episodes involve Hattori Heiji.
If you like it, keep watching.
magic kaito would be a perfect one to start then.
Remember to watch the two dubs by soulbrothahnumbah3 on youtube after you’re done with the first few eps, if you like hip hop and parody at all
Taste closed and taste closed 2 are the names I believe
Gotta put a disclaimer that after watching LOTGH everything will seem dull.
And the sadness oh god, i don't remember crying to anything as much as i did after THAT episode. Fucking masterpiece.
Same here. I literally knew it was going to happen from reading the wiki too much; even knew it was that episode, and I still bawled my eyes out.
(Assuming we're talking about the sleeping pills event)
Edit: there were also several super bittersweet, cathartic parts near the end that got me, but nothing to compared to that.
I really like Attack on Titan and I enjoyed Parasite and Death Note.
Can anyone recommend my some "mature" animes that are not too over the top with fan service/cute shit?
Animes have a lot of potential since you can have cool stories that would just be way too expensive to produce in live action (eg. attack on titan). But I don't like those typical things like extremely busty female characters or when the character always start screaming and turn into some weird low detail drawing (I hope you know what I mean haha).
I'd try stuff like Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Psycho-Pass and Shinsekai Yori.
From all the stuff I've seen, those really keep the comedy/cartoonish stuff to a bare minimum (if anything) while being the kind of show that you see on people's toplists all the time. Plus they're all short! (12 / 25 / 25 eps. respectively)
I'll recommend the biggest missing piece on this chart: Ghost in the Shell:Standalone Complex. It's a bit heady, but has good individual episodes as well as continuous stories. All focused on near future sci fi with a secretive government anti-terrorist group.
You would definitely like Erased! I actually show that series to a lot of friends who don’t like anime because I need to show them fanservice/cute shit isn’t every Anime. It’s a murder mystery/time travel show
I really enjoyed Code Geass. It has a couple of "filler" episodes (All of which I've mentally blocked out) that are a little tropey, but otherwise it's imo the spiritual successor to Death Note in almost every way (Besides the mechs, I guess).
Was Parasyte on there? I didnt see it.
I binged Parasyte and Tokyo Ghoul over a weekend. Anime as never been the same since.
Shinsekai Yori. Watch the show or read the book, both are stellar.
Berserk
Baccano is an underrated one (it's on the list, though). It watches like a Guy Ritchie film.
Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans is also a good one. No need for any prior knowledge of other Gundam series. It's just a brutal Mecha Yakuza porn.
jojos bizarre adventure!
Cowboy Bebop
That’s literally it. Cowboy Bebop is a testament not to what anime is, but what it can be. Yeah, there’s a bit of unnecessary sexualization, but nothing that’s stereotypical of anime or too over the top.
After Bebop, I would recommend Hellsing, Fate/Zero, Samurai Champloo, Death Note, Wolf’s Rain, or Terror in Resonance. All of these are amazing shows that consistently hit it out of the ballpark.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is great, the original author of the manga was extremely progressive for an '80s manga writer, he was really important to the deconstruction of the old-fashioned power fantasy story. It's an action story with great characters, and has elements of a lot of genres. The story comes in "parts," the manga has gone up to Part 8, the anime has gone up to Part 5. Think of them like seasons but more isolated, each part features a new group of protagonists. The show is dark and gritty at times, and lighthearted at others. Don't let Part 1 put you off if you don't like the basic "big strong protagonist wins through willpower" plot, every part is unique and the author finds his style beginning with Part 2. Don't skip Part 1, it's basic but very well-done and integral to the entire rest of the story.
The animation is very unique, the manga itself is very creative and the anime studio replicated that to great effect. The story, character design, and poses are over the top, but humans look quite realistic besides the first three protagonists and a handful of supporting characters, who are all over 180 cm of solid muscle. Not that strength matters much beyond Part 1 and especially Part 2, as characters' combat ability stops relying on physical prowess. Often, the anime will suddenly completely shift the colours of the entire scene and all the characters for dramatic effect.
Unlike many stories, JJBA isn't scared of killing characters, but doesn't abuse it so much you expect everyone to die. There's enough death to make things really impactful, especially because the main characters that do end up dying don't lose any character development for it.
If you watch it, prepare for a wild ride of '80s and '90s musical references, because the author loves music and originally wrote it in those decades. I promise you, 80% of the main characters are named after something musical. No exaggeration.
Plus, everything has JoJo references. You'll start seeing them pretty quickly.
Everybody should be introduced into anime with Code Geass.
Recently added to Netflix too
I thought Code Geass was a lot of episodes, but 12 is a good amount. It's on my Netflix list :)
Uhhh it's 50 episodes...
There's only 1 season on Netflix in my country. They're short enough though that 50 episodes doesn't seem too bad.
Ah thanks Netflix! Nope not bad at all, well worth the watch!
Or death note
It has the benefit of being a great start while also turning into a total clusterfuck of a disaster half way through. Pretty much the perfect primer for most anime series really.
Bomberman Jetters deserves to be on here somewhere. Somewhere in the feels/comedy.
Are all of these in that 26 episode sweet spot?
Just a personal one I didn't see, but I'd really recommend Mob Psycho 100 for anyone that hasn't seen it. It's by the same mangaka as OPM, and the animation is really something to behold
What the fuck is this disgusting shit?
Bruh, MP100 is the shit
I’d still put Naruto up there even though it is old. I feel as if Naruto, bleach and one piece are easy anime’s you can branch off of with what you like.
They're all there.
I just like watching harems like DxD and To Love Ru.
I watched quite a lot of other harems and romance generally only genre I enjoy.
But most of them aren’t finished or cuts off.
Kinda whack too half the anime consist of the same Male lead in the harem genre.
Golden time was nice.
Not really coke into animes but I enjoyed Cowboy Bebob, Samurai Champloo and I can't wait for Blade Runner - Black Lotus. Is there any cyberpunk, dark, semi-serious, neo-noir anime out there? As a massive Blade Runner fan, I hope Cyberpunk 2077 will spark the interest for the cyberpunk genre so we can get more games, movies and even animes.
Its might not be exactly what you're looking for but Trigun is worth a shot especially if you liked Bebop and Champloo. I think it does both the dark and semi-serious quite well.
Ghost in the shell: Stand Alone Complex
You might enjoy Ghost in the shell: stand alone complex. It's very good and SEVERELY cyberpunk.
Psycho Pass, maybe.
Ill put it on my very long list of anime i need to watch but don't get to it
Does anyone know an anime which is medieval and zombies?
I have watched Berserk, it is the closest thing I can find.
I would prefer minimal magi, but beggars can't be choosers, so please give me what you got!
Hellsing is the closest thing I can think of, it's medieval but it's vampires.
Tokyo Ghoul is also pretty close, but that's not medieval.
Both are pretty good shows though
Claymore. Not traditional zombies but close. Fun short action/horror series. Last couple episodes are total pants but its a fun ride anyway.
This is gold.
Which one of these elicits a visit from the FBI?
Literally the only animes I have ever enjoyed are One Punch Man and Initial D. Any suggestions?
Mob Psycho 100. Same author as OPM but widely considered to be even better.
If you like action I would recommend Kimetsu no yaiba it's a currently airing anime and the animation is Godly
What did you like about One Punch Man that kept you into it?
Really just the fact that it almost seems like satire of an anime. Extremely over the top and pokes fun at itself.
My suggestions and a little preview:
Overlord. Also doesn't take itself too seriously all the time. The premise is some dude who finds himself in charge of a guild in a game, but the guild are the bad guys! Fun characters and awesome story.
Gintama. Hilarious show that literally makes fun of itself and every other show it can. Top rated comedy anime of all time.
Kill la Kill. A chick goes to school where they battle for the top spot in the class...but their power comes from their uniforms. The main chick has a talking uniform that is pervy and barely covers anything and the action is outstanding.
If you liked the high-powered superheroes of OPM, you have many, many anime to choose from. I recommend JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (big, over-the-top battles and lots of comedy), I do that for just about anyone who likes action, because it's got everything. Good story, good characters, wacky powers, boatloads of creativity, and a distinct lack of annoying anime tropes. I spent a while explaining it in another comment on here, but TL;DR it's worth watching all of it because every season is completely unique.
Thanks, I've got it queued up!
The devil is a part timer, it was funny like OPM, has spiritual powers, with a slice of life aspect.
Nice job! The only thing bothering me is the “no drama” comedy. I like “Devil is a part timer”, but I think AmaBuri is a better choice recommendation in this category to someone “new” to anime. Anyway, thank you very much to doing this chart! I totally gonna use! ❤️
If I’m a rookie and newcomer to anime, I probably won’t refer to such a huge chart. It’s very overwhelming.
Nova is it’s about iconography and simplicity.
What do you like? I’d be willing to suggest stuff.
Amazing work
Leaving satisfied after seeing HxH (2011) under unfinished greatness. Solid chart. Ty op
So, there's this tiny section for cute girls doing cute things. And that's just ridiculous. I mean, I didn't even see Hidamari Sketch. This is Japan. Cute needs to be its own top level domain.
This is perfect!! I'm a voice actor and I'm trying to get into the anime biz so I would like to watch and study all different stories thank you so much!!
Ok berserk is in, approved
Where can I watch Cowboy Bebop?
Hulu if you have it, or buy piecemeal from Amazon, YouTube or Google Play.
Netflix bought the rights to it and will be available this year.
Funimation app (but it has ads)
Berserk horror... Yeah, no.
Hunter x Hunter is way too small
This is what actually finally got me into Anime. Deserves a much higher spot on the list it's a legit masterpiece
Can I get one for hentai?
Thank you... I may actually be using this
Where's Robotech?
I started reading and got intimidated and stopped.
What do you like? I could suggest something.
I saw and liked both cowboy bebop and samurai shamploo. I liked galaxy express 999 and the sequel.
I’d suggest Space Dandy
Is it on netflix or prime?
Oof it’s $.99 an episode on prime or on Hulu.
Ouch. Maybe you can help me figure out a movie i saw when i was a kid. There was a spaceship staffed only by women. In fact there are no men in existence. They discover a man and realize that hes different. Thats all i remember.
r/tipofmytongue would probably be more help than I am
oh, it was a bit bigger that it looked.
Edit: and this is actually good, i love to see the oldschool stuff get some love! take my upvote!
What is OP, and FT that were left out as listed with Naruto?
One Piece and Fairy Tail
Thanks!
It is neat but i'd love an updated version. who will take on the task???
Do most of these have dubs?
Most of the older ones do, yes. I'd say about half of these you can find a good dub to.
HOTD caption should have been "There's plot and there's THOTS".
The final boss of this chart is the ultimate anime. Cory in the house.
Love it, but where can i find these shows? I have netflix, crave (+hbo), and amazon prime videos... not sure which animes ate good on there.
I like more mature or darker ones like death note, fullmetal alchemist, and the giant cannibals attacking the isolated city on... maybe its name is titan something?
Netflix has huge selection of anime but if you want more you can probably find a good chunk of good anime on crunchyroll
Berserk is on Netflix
you shoukd be able to find a good bunch of shows on netflix or sites like chrunchyroll (depends on where you live tho) but some of them just arent available at all in some countries and you have to take other measures ^(cough streaming cough) to watch them...
It’s called Attack on Titan.
Death note was soooo good until the fucking ending like wtf. More anticlimactic than GOT
You really think so? I just watched all of Death Note (my first anime besides Avatar) this weekend, and although the journey to the ending was a little weird, I thought the final episode itself was pretty fantastic. I had chills throughout the entire ending montage.
Nah the way t happened just didn’t fit his character at all
You have a point but I took it as him getting cocky and assuming that everyone he was working with would follow his word to the letter. He expected them to be pawns fully under his control, so when X-Kira tries to do something on his own, the whole plan falls apart.
Fair enough
Why does a guide for first time anime viewers assume you've already seen an anime (avatar)?
That could be a good intro. Get em used to well storied animation. But it's not anime imo. One of the best shows of all time tho.
I think they're assuming it is mostly for those who already watched/grew up on the good western cartoons. It was probably many people's gateway into the medium. But if you are already into anime it is far from normal, highly western in style. Most Americans would consider it a cartoon, something normal to watch whereas "anime" has a stigma along with it
What’s the go-to for families.
What kind of family? Do you need good kid friendly shows to watch or shows you can watch with teenagers?
movies like Your Name or the ghibli studio movies are pretty good,
Anyone got any more shows on the thriller/horror tab? I'm running kinda low and i've seen most of it...
It’s kind of popular but have you watched Yakusoku no Neverland? (The Promised Neverland)
Anyone got an updated version?
No nichijou?!
Guides like these remind me why I don't listen to anime recommendations.
Holy fuck, is there a beginners guide to the beginners guide?
Action -> Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
Drama -> March comes in like a lion
Comedy -> Gintama
Romance -> Toradora
[deleted]
Why? I prefer shows that wrap up and don't drag on past their expiration date.
If an anime is 1 season 11/10 times it left off on a cliffhanger
Many of the shows on the list were written and created to be a single season.
Looked trying to find something else like Monster, fucking nothing as good as Monster yet :(
Cute girls doing cute things - >
Wannabe popstars... Nah. Life away from City... Hmmm. Tank Drifting. Wat. Gotta watch this one.
Since when is Monster "old but gold"? It's from 2004... I feel like this was written by a 15 year old?
I just want to say that Monster is reeeaaally good!
Wish my wife wanted to finish watching it with me :(
mfw Dragon Maid is what got me into anime.
Thanks this is really cool!!
r/anime
taking shots at sword art online
Shit I need a guide for this guide
Was Hellsing Ultimate in there somewhere and I just missed it?
I.... I guess I just forgot how much anime I've seen in my life...
Holy expletive(I dont feel like reading the sub rules). I read the comments first and figured it was gonna keep going maybe a few more rows like the thumbnail showed. All I have is 100 coins. Take it
I don't see One Punch Man
It’s an old chart
Anime had such interesting and unique plots but I really find the animation annoying and distracting. Also the female characters have extremely annoying voices. Idk, any recommendations? I’d like to try again! I loved spirited away and I do like live action Japanese movies.
Bakemonogatari is a really unique show I would recommend it if you're a fan of heavy dialogue and philosphy but if you're more of an action series fan than I would recommend Kimetsu no yaiba
Try Land of the Lustrous. The animation really nice, albeit a low frame count. I can't really tell whether the voices are annoying or not but they didn't get to me and I'm usually very much bothered by that stuff.
As long as none of the women sound like sexy babies lol
Lmao. A lot of the characters are supposed to be more gender neutral so I don't think you have much to worry about.
Mushi-shi. Almost all of the eps are stand alone thinkers. Nary a squeaky high schooler in sight. Definitely a Spirited Away vibe, though sometimes sadder.
I will always recommend to an anime noob original Naruto. Only like 110 cannon episodes and mostly well written despite the stereotype it gets.
And it was my first anime so I'm just nostalgic for it.
Jojo?
Can i get a physical form of this chart preferably made into a scroll that can be rolled up? I'm not joking it would be awesome.
Thanks for this awesome list!
Where’s Ninja Scroll on there?
thank you for perfecting it
My anime tastes must be skewed or I’m missing on some really dope shows. No Gundam Wing? No, Code: Geiss? Dragon Ball Z isn’t an anime?
Dragon Ball is there as "The Classic", I imagine it includes Z.
All three of those are listed.
Wing is listed under 'Gundam', along with 00 and SEED
Oh damn y’all right, didn’t see them.
Way too much personal taste here. It reads like a weeb manifesto. Almost expected a step brothers esque "best non hentai show to masturbate to" category.
I’m probably just a bit blind but couldn’t seem to find my hero academia, or one punch man on there both great superhero anime’s.
Because this is an old repost
Thank you for clearing that up for me 😊
Full Metal is nothing like Avatar the Last Airbender.
Totally agree. If you reduce the show to it's elements like other people replying have, it's similar, but it has none of the same charm, pacing and lovable characters. With avatar I fell instantly in love and enjoyed it the whole way to the end. With full metal I was constantly bored and was watching further because it's a well reviewed show and I was expecting it to improve. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone new, speaking as a noob myself.
They both have small, cute protagonists, a plucky female love interest that ignore their romantic feelings, and a dense, silly brother character in true admiration of a father who abandoned them at a young age and whose expertise is martial combat. They are practically the same show. /s
(It is funny how much Sokka and Al have in common though when I put it like that)
I can see where they might have been going though...a) serious storyline for the main cluster of protagonists that actually has a conclusion on film (still pissed about Claymore and Trinity Blood there), b) a richly developed group of secondary characters or one-ep allies that we may not see for several seasons but still have a role to play later that makes sense, c) a clearly developed world and lore that the characters interact in, and d) a decent, multidimensional group of adversaries that the characters interact with, with development for the adversaries along the story as well ( Greed and Scar come to mind along with Prince Zuko).
No, alchemy in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is not like elemental bending in Avatar The Last Airbender, but thematic elements and components of what made one story compelling is why the other is recommended.
A long coming of age show about a young protagonist who is saving the world with a large supporting cast
Anime sucks tho...
Intellectual
As someone not into anime, is Steins;Gate really considered "dark and serious"? I stopped watching it halfway precisely because it was way too over-the-top and cartoony. That show, a thriller? Seriously?
The show dives into depression moods in the later half. Steins Gate 0 is like that from the beginning.
I felt the same way the first time through, but those goofy bits get turned on their head. Watching the show a second time is an almost completely different experience.
Yeah. Near the end it kind of pulls a mini Madoka.
Can someone remake this where every space is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure?
Not a virgin? ----> nothing
Someone had too much time
Easier chart:
Want to watch anime?
No - proper.
Yes - died.
Danmachi is found no where I am upset
Glad to see some of my fav romances on there. Lovely Complex and Kamisama Kiss always deserve recognition.
"What's scary? This chart is." I have to agree, holy shit.
How the hell is Inuyasha not on this but Card Captors is?
No...
Where's Boruto's dad?
You lost me at Hentai Heaven
I didn't see RWBY or Avatar TLA on there. What gives?
Technically they aren’t anime since they aren’t Japanese
what about samurai Jack or Ben 10?
Yeah again those are made in the U.S. If they’re in the chart then idk why.
Respect
Shinsekai Yori was a good show but really pissed me off at the end. Spoilers ahead, beware.
Humans: Why u mad?
Monsters: We don't like being slaves that you murder en masse whenever we deviate even slightly from your expectations.
Humans: ... So why u mad?
Avatar = anime? What face?
It’s not, that’s why it’s not listed as a suggestion on the flow chart but as a comparative for guidance.
Where's Saint Seiya?
At first i was like OK. After i clicked on itt i went like wow thats a lot of work and its pretty cool gj
Somewhere in there under comedy should be Seto no Hanayome!
Here’s my deal. I can’t have anime tits in my face. It really fucks with me. Sword art online great concept then I feel like I’m watching hentai.
This is way too much for a "beginner" to really dive into to get into anime... Many will see this flowchart, see it's too much work and not even bother.
I suggest just bringing it up friends and watching a few eps of their fav series with them. Then branch out there from there. I always liked Fist of the North Stat but I'm just a casual watcher of anime.
My recommendations from friends lead me to watching Baki, No Game No Life, and Attack On Titan. Then I branched out and watched Goblin Slayer and I'm gonna get started on Evangelion after watching the first recap movie. So I'm starting to find what I'm into organically.
This guide is just... Daunting.
No My Hero Academia?
no nichijou...? :(
This is my first saved image from reddit. Thanks OP
I don't see Trigun, this confuses and enrages me!
It’s in there.
Why is there an incest comedy anime... you know what, nvm.
Code Geass not at top?
No, but it is in there. It’s one of the few anime’s that had a satisfying ending.
soooo where is dragon ball Z in all this 👀
Won’t enlarge and be clearly read on mobile :(
Is Ranma on here? It's the only one i know
Instead of wasting time with this, just go on myanimelist and look at top rated or filter your search. MAL is all you need when looking for anime.
Based of the list I'm kinda interested in parasyte, and darker than black. Has anyone seen them and say if they are worth watching
Parasyte is very well written show Imo the main character is one of the most well developed main characters in anime
This seems heavily tailored to the maker’s personal likes. In my experience and the experience of my friends Hunter x Hunter or Gurren Laggan have been far and away the best first anime for western mindsets. Even the guys in their 20’s and 30’s that watched Dragonball and Gundam as kids seemed to gravitate toward Hunter x Hunter especially. Bebop in my experience is great as a third or fourth series, especially as a short masterpiece after an epic watch like Hunter x Hunter or Bleach for an action fan.
This is really cool. Great job, OP! Though, I can't believe you left out Basilisk!
You know, the decision control steps could actually be used in anime recommenders on anime streaming sites. Instead of the giant, intimidating set of genres, the page could display 4-6 initial genres. After selecting one(or more) checkboxes, more options could be offered and so forth.
It would make finding new anime crazy simple for beginners, cutting out a huge amount of trial and error.
Again, love the chart. I wish I had something like this 12 years ago.
My one change I would have is make anime hogwarts Akashic records of a Bastard magical instructor, also, the lack of Trinity 7 disturbs me.
This is so fragmented that it would probably be more useful as a text file that allows you to use the search function to just look for what you want.
Like: "Hmm... I like boxing."
CTRL+F
Hajime No Ippo
I got a friend who stumbled upon Monogatari when he was 12
This must've took a while and as a casual anime fan introduced me to some interesting stuff .
Used this to find a few new manga. I'd love a specific manga version.
Hats off to the person who took the time to make this and use many different anime. The which I've at least heard of almost all of the them.
Guren Lagen is recommended before Gundam?
what the fuck... I’ve seen them all...
[deleted]
It’s in there.
[deleted]
No, but they specially said they chose short, 1-2 season choices for beginner series.
Anyone know any other animes that are 'epic like avatar'?
Fma brother hood
I meant other than that
Fate unlimited blade works is pretty good it has tons of refrences to diffrent myths and cultures just like avatar
Thanks, I'll try it.
There's almost no post-apo? Or any zombie?
I never watched any anime or manga (except Pokemon and maybe Naruto) but would like to watch something post-apo if there is any
High school of the dead : not bad has some ecchi but ultimately pretty good story.
Gakkougurashi school live! : I liked this one. Just a group of girls and their teacher trying to survive after the zombie apocalypse while keeping one of their friends, who is lost in a delusion, oblivious to the horrors outside.
And anything about a world after an atomic war or after an EMP?
Nothing that I think you'd be looking for or I could recommend, there's not a ton you're correct on that.
Iconic cars drifting in touge? Initial D
Souped up street cars racing illegally at insane top speeds on the Tokyo highway? Wangan Midnight
How is SAO not worth recommending? I don't watch a lot of anime but SAO is one of the ones I watched and I thought it was great (season 2 not as much tho). Any avid anime watchers here that could explain their reasoning for not recommending it?
SAO assumes you also play videos games, know what an MMO is, enjoy a romantic sub-plot and care about an OP character with a forgettable villain.
The first half is pretty good, but it doesn't stand out as much as the other top shows. I wouldn't recommend it because it only portrays it's story within a game, and the second half completely falls apart.
Konosuba should've been up there in comedy anime but too bad it's not quite for beginners.
Cromartie High is godly hilarious.
TIL my preferred genre is considered "comedy"
My first anime was One Punch Man. Good place to start.
Just wanted to make sure Slayers and Gundam Wing were on here, was not expecting such a comprehensive list! Seeing Outlaw Star makes me want to hook up my VCR and dust the tapes off... Anyone see Fushigi Yuugi listed?
Shit, I'm old...
Need to finish mushishi, man love the relaxing tone of that anime.
cowboy bebop as first anime wut
What kind of monster starts Gundam on SEED
Calling SaO dumb. SMH. I knew there would be a poison pill in this chart somewhere.
It is dumb. The abridged version is more entertaining.
Soo the only thing I need is a website where I can watch my first anime. Can you recommend any ?
VRV, Crunchyroll, Netflix, Hulu, Funimation
Crunchyroll is a goodplace to start but if you're looking for an illegal straming site either kissanime.me or gogoanime
Full metal alchemist is one of my all time favorite animes, brotherhood however is unviewable. Your baiting people a little with that one i feel.
Brotherhood is the correct version, the original fma deviated from the source material after the Mayes Hughes incident. And ultimately ends up with a much worse ending.
Ok but look at soul eater. If all we got was copy pasted manga everyone would be bitching about the moon clowns, brotherhood added too much shit that had no weight like the extra chimera character's while also fucking up the main villians so there was again no weight to the ending. The original hit home for me with the movies were ed and al end up together ina real world as rocket scientists. Felt...real.
We'll have to agree to disagree then. I watched fma first and then brotherhood and definitely felt that brotherhood was much better, especially with the villains.
I opened this picture and immediately closed it after seeing the size. I have too much anxiety for this shit 😂
Is there no dragon maid or am I blind
Seems to be a little old so some newer shows are missing, but pretty good regardless.
I'd say this was made about 2015ish, i think Death Parade came out about that time and that's the newest show i recognize on this list.
Durarara needs to be added
wow
Wheres one punch man?
Nice
Steins;Gate
This pleases the nut
No gintama??
Shouldng watch fmab if you are male
Attack on Titan???
This list is a lie! At no point is Jojo on there, therefore its entirely inaccurate! /s
For real though this is pretty good
Edit I have brought shame on my family. Jojo is totally on there. I would make the case that it could be in every category though
Is this person seriously going to go to this much effort to make a recommendation chart, and then recommend that people start Gundam with Wing, 00, or SEED?
It reccomends Gundam 00, wing and seed. But not the classic UC stuff. Wtf
Not even g Gundam which is just the awesomeness of Gundam without the political agendas.
I’m so glad Lovely Complex made it onto this infographic. It’s such a gem. This was a very comprehensive list!
Was looking for Nichijou
Not Disappointed
I read animal flowchart and was hoping to fimd my power animal finally with this thing, hopes dashed 3/10.
Commenti g for future use
Nice
OMG the effort in this one , thanks for sharing
My first anime was Death Note.
I love. love, love L!!
Hellsing ultimate?
Under the "Joyrides" it goes out of its way to describe all the outrageous anime (FlCl, kill la kill, etc), until it gets to JoJos at the bottom where they just gave up.
This is kinda sad
This list is flawed why is not everyone JoJo?
I need a version of this for manga!
I think anime is the one thing I never get into. I find the art style and voice acting really weird and off-putting, which is a shame since most of my friends watch various anime shows.
Most anime kinda sucks, especially the voice acting. I swear the try their hardest to make it sound like porn.
Went to Japan once and women are high pitched as fuck, like, they reach really high notes with their normal conversational voice and they can go even higher when voice acting
You could try an english dubbed anime show like Death Note, you get used to the artstyle after you watch a couple shows
I'm surprised ACCA 13 isnt here for a political drama...
Monster, Goodnight Punpun.
"not worth recommending, SAO"
!Nice!<
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST
It's missing King of the Hill. It's important not to overlook Texas anime. We won't be underestimated I'll tell you hwat!
This is great and i will probably use it for my next series, but it doesn't have assassination classroom on it. I feel that is an important anime to include.
Saving this post to check later, there's a lot of shows on here that I've heard of but not known enough about to actually go watch
Wait Parasyte is considered Horror? I hate horror movies and Parasyte was my first anime and that was not scary.
Yes
No Excel Saga? :-(
Dragon ball z?
"I'm ready"->No, you're not->Eva
Updoot
that's too helpful, can't thank enough !
the classic - dragon ball
Guide checks out as their can only be one classic fighting anime.
Just finished my first anime ever, cowboy bebop, and I loved every bit of it. Going to start on Full Metal Alchemist
Have fun! It's really good! Glad you enjoyed Bebop
Is there a version of this with any animated series, not just anime?
This chart only needs Cowboy Bebop. The rest are useless
Really disappointing not seeing Land of the Lustrous on here. Feel like it deserves a place in Action/Fantasy
Where’s jojo
I highly recommend everyone to watch Kaiji. Probably one of the best thriller animes out there
About to watch Twelve Kingdoms because of this flowchart!!! Never heard of it.. any input? no fckn spoilers
Twelve Kingdoms
Dated animation, but solid story and characters.
Elaborate on dated if you can, also I’m a sucker for character development/ dynamic stories
It just looks like it was animated in the early 2000's ya know?
Can someone get the dude that made this a girlfriend
Steins gate is not a beginners anime
If you only spent this much time trying to get laid...Genghis Khan would blush.
Just tell me where is one punch man?
The first arc of Death Note was a masterpiece. The second half was pretty weak, though. I’ll say that that first half was probably the best, smartest anime I’ve seen. The only problem was when they introduced the obnoxious girlfriend character. I hate anime when they start with a cool, dark show, then end up ruining it when they start adding in wacky, zany characters when it’s completely unnecessary and ruins the tone of the show. I started watching Tokyo Ghoul last week and it did the same thing. It started with a cool, dark premise, then started adding in bad Shonen characters that basically add up to “look at me, can you see how quirky and weird I am?!” If a show is meant to be edgy, let it be edgy. No need to pollute it with silliness.
I haven't watched anime in years. This list looks like it could be very useful if I decide to watch some anime!
Well done!
Also it is me, or record of Lodoss War do not appear in the list in the adventure section?
Maybe people here can help me, I've been trying to figure out this one anime that I think was on Netflix like... 6-8 years ago maybe? It was about this guy who was linked with these magical/powerful women creatures. I think they lived with him in a city that people battled in. I can't remember if there were rankings or not from the battles. From what I remember, at the time there was only one or two seasons out. I'd love to watch it again but I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone have any idea what it might be?
Sekirei
Yes thank you!
One of my favorites when I was a teen years ago, funny raunchy moments and lots of action. I think the third season released in 2013 and was the last one. Forgot to watch that one.
Wow wow wow!! This really helps!! I'm not a huge anime fan but I'll dig some! Thanks!
I see no Jojo
How can you call this guide complete
Perfect timing, I've been searching for a new good anine to binge!
No Grand blue in comedy, c'mon bruh.
Where's konosuba?
Comment to find later
Where's Meganebu and why's it not under making fun of anime cliches?
I've never heard of Darker than Black but it sounds legit.
Where the fuck is jojo
Honestly this is what I recommended my friend.
My hero academia
One punch man
Naruto
Full metal alchemist brotherhood
I became absolutely certain of this chart's veracity once I saw how it dealt with Evangelion.
But Mob Psycho tho
Highly appreciate Parasyte being on there
I'll wait for the abridged version on YouTube.
Woah
Too lazy to actually read the whole thing.
Could have made this shorter with...
watch Cowboy Bebop...Ok, stop, you got pretty much the best there is.
Link to picture please.
Saved!
I'm pretty sure a lot of animes in the advanced category aren't that good. You can't have they many good animes.
Have you watched one punch man? No? Watch one punch man.
Disappointed that Urotsukodoji The Legend of the Overfiend is not in the scary section. Those were great films.
Listening to AoT OST while scrolling through this.
I can't find one punch man, is it in there?
Comment for later
Prince of Tennis >>>> Baby Steps
Well, time for me to look into .hack, champloo, psycho pass, steins, and darker than black.
PS: I had to look way too far down for SAO, Imo. Even saoa:ggo wasn't awful.
I also couldn't bother to scroll enough to find Gundam 00.
SAO abridged is honestly better than the actual show imo if you haven't seen it I recommend it
Really? Haven't seen it. I'll have to look into it.
Excuse me, but where tf is Yu you Hakusho?
No death parade 3/10 /s
Anyone have any recommendations for any other thriller anime?
Attack on Titan as a five star anime? I started with that.
I'd put AoT in like a solid 4, it's good but sometimes the pacing can be slow
Yeah, the latest episode, they spent all the time Arguing about weather to save Armin or the commander
That I didn't actually have a problem with, because I actually had a hard time choosing myself. Like Levi I would have chosen Erwin based purely on his experience and charisma, but ultimately agreed with their choice.
Was this made before or after assassination classroom. Because if it was before, shame on whoever did this not putting it on there. If it is on there and I missed it, shame on me!
I mean JOJO coulf be in pure fun and fights at the same time tbh
I remember using this when I started anime, it was ok but I quickly discovered that it's easier to find ones myself
ew, not enough 60's-early 90's anime.
Awesome list.
If I may make a suggestion though:
"Psychological police in a cyberpunk setting" should definitely be Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Can anyone tell me properly about fushugi yugi? I didn't spell it right I'm betting. Someone I know who died really liked it. I want to know what they were into.
Thank you for your services
TLDR, So which anime should I watch?
One punch man
just choose death note and get on with life
What’s the most intense anime out rn
The only good anime this rn are kimetsu no yaiba and carole&Tuesday
And one punch man
My girlfriend recommended me to watch One Piece as my first anime as its stupid and silly. But DUDDE ITS 800 EPISODES LONG... it took her a year or two to catch up when she first watching.. I got like 120 episodes in and couldn't hold out..
I feel like naruto should be a beginner anime. Very accessible through netflix and hulu with no ads. Also, plastic memories being my favorite anime, i feel it should be on there. (I couldnt find it at least)
I love whoever made this😍😍😍
MFW no Tokyo Ghoul
This is nice
Any thing like this for movies?
This is amazing! Now I just need one of these for the super lewd ecchi stuff.
Just finished watching death note, I was a little disappointed with the end, anyone who also felt like this?
Need a good laugh
Toradora
Choose one
I'm so happy Ghost Hunt is included
https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/3m45vh/the_ultimate_anime_recommendation_flowchart/
How is SAO not worth recommending!?
SAO abridged is the only SAO worth mentioning.
This is amazing
Son... just don't.
Is there anything like this but for live action movies and shows not based on anime?
Honestly if all branches don't end in king of the hill do you even watch anime uwu
I would recommend Serial Experiments Lain to anyone trying to get into anime, simply because it's so un-anime like. It was my introduction to anime and still my favorite to this day.
Where da fuk is AKIRA?
Thank you so Much. For a long time I wanted to start watching and I didn't know where to start.
What did you use to make this?
I think One Punch Man, Naruto and Dragonball z are very beginner friendly
This is the best thing I have seen in my life
Cowboy bebop is the best anime for people who don't like anime
Excuse the fuck outte me, but WHERE'S JOJO?
just watch jojo LMAO
Great list, thanks for sharing! Now all we need is an ecchi flowchart :3
Categorizing NGE as thriller/Horror doesn't feel right tbh.
Great stuff. I wish I had as much time as I want for watching anime. Oh well.
This is excellent. Is there something similar for manga in print?
Tldr
That's a lot of anime
DAE get a super blurry pic when they click on it? (Non Gundam Mobile user)
I dont see Dragon Ball Abridged anywhere on this list!
It's enough to make a grown weeb megavirgin cry, and that's okay. Cuz I'm not one.
Where's my "One Punch Man" located.
When will we get more Hunter x hunter :(
I hit this post annnnnnd that’s enough internet for one day
***Saved to desktop**
I thought it was going to be a simple list based off of the thumbnail but then I was in for a surprise.
Can you make another one, but for hentai
No Tenshi, oh well. Good list though.
Sounds like weeb talk to me
Fucking weeb
Where the frick is yugioh
Didn't see Witch Hunter Robin.
Assassination Classroom isn't on there
God has given me the sacred texts !
What do you do when you've watched them all?
Psycho pass is probably one of my favorite anime.
I recommend Domestic na kanojo. That shit is crazy
Crazy in what way? What is it about?
It's a drama about a guy who's in love with his teacher but he realizes that a relation ship between them is impossible so he meets a girl and eventually they have sex it's later revealed that the dad of the main character is getting married and the woman he's marrying has 2 daughters the teacher he had a crush on and the girl he had sex with
It reads like a typical Japanese dumpster fire, but it's not terrible once you realize that the characters are written pretty realistically and it doesn't dive into school days territory at the end.
Dude, did you make this? This is impressive.
Goddamnit I was trying not to be a weeb, but I failed
oh my
watch the devil is a part timer and its 13+ ,interesting and never forgetable, best parody since onepunchman arrived.
Where r boobs
"Gundam, start with AU's."
What in gods name am I reading?
7 Deadly Sins
u/jumala665
I haven't come across anything that has topped Deathnote for me (granted I haven't looked very hard). Seems like so many animes have too many comic relief characters that fumble around like idiots. Is there anything else that falls under drama involving intelligent high schoolers and/or adults?
Promised Neverland is a good horror/thriller anime where all the characters play mind games with each other just like death note but most of the character are 11 or younger so I don't if you would like that or not
Seems interesting enough. I might check it out.
Nope!!!!!!! You put death note way to high. Can’t respect or follow this guide.
Could someone explain the "Thriller -> What kind of thriller? -> I'm ready -> No you're not -> Mechas -> NGE" joke without spoiling the anime? I'm intrigued.
Evangelion is a deconstruction of "normal" mecha anime, taking a number of common tropes and "unasked questions" (such as "Q: Why does this untrained kid need to pilot this mecha? A: spoiler, Q: Why does the mecha's capabilities depend on the pilot's emotional state? A: spoiler, and Q: Why can the robot act on its own and do things that are supposed to be impossible? A: spoiler, and many more) and returning very dark twists on the answers.
It's also very heavily psychological; significant scenes are spent introspecting the characters and their relationships with one another. One of the primary themes is the "hedgehog's dilemma"; people need to get (emotionally) close to each other, but growing close is opening yourself up to pain. How do you balance the need for closeness and the fear of pain? (The four main characters (the pilots + Misato) are a case study into four really bad answers. On a more general note, almost everyone in the story is F*ed in the head in some way.)
Eva also often doesn't spell out its significant show-wide plots; parts of them are found across the series and it's up to the viewer to figure out the (very significant) metaplot. (This isn't to say that it's hidden, it's just not spelled out.)
Not all of Eva is dark, though. I, personally, divide it into four main "parts":
Eva's placement right next to Puella Magi Madoka Magica isn't an accident at all. Eva is to the mecha genre approximately what Madoka is to the magical girl genre; a major deconstruction with a significantly darker take that significantly impacted the genre and amassed a huge following, for very good reasons. I highly recommend it. (and Madoka, too, if you like it.)
Perfect reply, thank you.
Glad to help.
Or just watch Jojo
Code Geass not being at the top
0/10, no jojo
Devil is a part timer is epic
I'm not entirely sure that Berserk belongs in the horror category it has horror elements but I don't really think that's the main concept of the manga or the anime adaptations.
Yoo Devil is a part timer is my shit!
I see that Jojo isn't in your personal recommendations. You will be judged
So what are the best places to watch these at? I've heard crunchyroll Is good but that's it
I use CR but friend told me he used kissanime
I was not expecting it to be so extensive when I clicked on the picture. I clicked and my head went back like HOLY FUCK!
First thing I did was look for Shiki. They have it so this list is legit.
Angel Beats and "a good laugh". It gave me depressions.
Little hard to follow everywhere but I love this!
No Baki?!?!
Just watch dragonball z
Well if this isn’t the dankest shit
Somehow i already skipped to berserk
Just watch JoJo, it has everything in it.
No one ever mentions God Eater
Probably because it's not that good. It's alright if you've played the games, but as a stand-alone anime it's pretty mediocre.
I was about to complain about the lack of Serial Experiments Lain, but that isn't anything like beginner anime. That more like "Akira was neat and all, but what can really fuck with my head."
Is it an unpopular opinion to say that Steins;Gate is not good for people new to anime?
The pacing is so damn slow, and some characters would probably be annoying at best and offensive at worst to people not used to anime tropes. For example, I was not a fan of Itaru’s neckbearded perviness (bordering on pedophilic vibes considering Mayuri’s loli appearance).
The fact that berserk isnt one of the first animes on the list is why cultured people call you weebs.
Plunder and pillage, and rape of the villages, towns, and the cities-burnt to the ground.
Banish the nation, till their occupation means nothing is left of the old world order...
I was sad not finding Yuri!! On Ice :(
Time to watch all of them
Outlawstar
Holy fuck dude well done 😮
Yes for Monster, but no Sakamoto desu ga?
My phone lagged 10 min straight opening the picture
I see that Seven Deadly Sins is on there but I absolutely think it should be highly recommended for beginners. I love it and way it shows powers and friendships is amazing
I'm happy Kaiji and Akagi are included
Excelent! I'm going to try to see all Thriller & Horror!
Also the one of the plot twist of Shinsekai yori was spoiled by describing the category
I'm triggered that Superpowers, X-Men style doesn't point directly to Cyborg 009.
ANIME ANIME ANIME ....holy shit thnks for the guide !!
Which has the most tiddies?
TFW I went straight to the genres I like the most and already seen them all.
Trigun should be on here.
Ok never mind the picture is actually ridiculously huge lmao
Where is my hero
I don't think AOT is edgy
Oh
funny how r/coolguides has better taste in anime than r/anime
Who do i message to recommend “Perfect Blue?” Or did I just glaze over it?
As someone who’s been watching anime for 30 years and has seen literally an uncountable amount since the 80s this chart is amazing
I might be missing it, but is Initial D on there? Feel like it should.
It's a bit dated now. I'm hoping they do a reboot with better CGI. Keep the Eurobeat.
The CGI in the later seasons is honestly pretty good. First few seasons are kinda wack though. Still iconic. The movies are very well animated and even though they miss some content pretty good for cramming an entire season in them. Too bad they used rock instead of euro beat.
I only ever watched anime through Toonami but i really enjoyed One Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100 and Attack on titan.
I’ve only watched a few anime but Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood was the first one I watched and I agree it’s awesome to get started with the Genre.
Started with My Hero Academia as my first anime and finished it recently, can't wait to watch more
No yaoi genre?
This is actually really cool. Ive always wanted to watch anime but ive never been able to find anything that holds my interest but this is super neat and now i think i might be able to watch some shows! Thanks!
I’m currently watching jojo, shield hero and attack on titan. Any solid suggestions based on that?
Is sao just chopped liver? That personally is perfect for beginners it’s on Netflix and awesome IMO
Glad you made it. Couldn’t find my way to DBZ glad I stumbled upon it on Spanish channels in the 90’s when I was a wee lad.
U fucking stole this from r/anime smh
I don't know if i should be proud for having seen most of these or deeply scared for how much time of my life is gone
wheres jojo
Very good stuff. I was a bit shocked gits wasn't in the list, even if it was just the original movie. Also means i should get back to watching some stuff.
So glad Magi was mentioned. I need more of that anime.
I didn’t see Lupin III :(
It’s only been around for 50yrs
That potato though.
Where’s Naruto?
Lack of comments about about Samurai Champloo makes me sad :/
Wow I actually love this
Someone put all this effort into making this chart and all it makes me feel is to watch Cowboy Bebop again.
Here I go watching again!
Air there’s been a mistake. It appears you haven’t placed Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure as the best thing.
Where the fuck is my JoJo Bizarre Adventure?
Wryyyyyyyyy~
I have a friend who thinks Avatar the Last Airbender isn’t a good series because it was on Nickelodeon. He hasn’t even seen a single episode.
It’s a good series for a first timer that ties into Full Metal Alchemist in terms of epic story telling. So in his conclusion, Full Metal Alchemist sucks.
The boy speaks blasphemy
Does anyone have any safe websites to watch these off of?
The fact that I followed this list and ended at a few I knew and a few I loved without even trying to, shows that this is a pretty good flowchart. I’m pretty new to anime and this helps soooooo much.
Berserk will never be finished
cool
Where is JoJo smh
I really really really wish this wasn’t so low resolution:( I can barley read it but it seems really helpful
I spend way too long trying to find Jojo
dude you are more Anime Man than Anime Man himself
TL:DR watch Jojo
My reaction:
Hmmmm... I don't see Baki here...
I’m very sad to see no jojo
"Need a good laugh"
Angel beats
Now I understand the latest animemes
Fairy Tail was the first anime I watched
>or not worth recommending anyway (SAO)
That's how it's done OP. Good job.
Why the fuck does an incest category exist? That’s messed up.
No Cory in the House?!?!
jojo deserves its own category because it doesnt fit it to any
I would not recommend Death Note as a first anime to watch. Trigun or Scryed, but Death Note was just too weird for me.
"Gundam: start with 00, Wing, or SEED." So, start with the bad ones. Cool.
Can a category be added of animes that don't have creepy a.f. representations of women/girls and are still good?
I like anime. Code Geass was one I watched recently that was pretty cool. It had some cringe moments here and there. Then there was one filler episode that was literally a swim suit party with all the high school girls and it was just about how hot they all are and how helpless all the guys are with women. Like wtf so dumb q.q
Kara no kyoukai,Madoka magica and black lagoon are very good anime with strong female leads if that's what you're looking for
Oh shiiiiit I'll check them out. I wasn't really looking specifically for that, it just sucks that most good anime comes pre-packaged with creepy pedo/incel vibes. I'll still watch a good anime even if it has creepy a.f. moments, I'll just also whine about those moments :P
Thanks for the recommendations. I'll look up some trailers or something and pick one to start with from there
Right, I just want to say don't be fooled by the trailer for madoka magica it may seem like a kids show but it gets dark past episode 3
The one I can't pronounce with the death eyes looked cool :O
Yeah, word of warning it can be a little confusing since the story is told out of chronological order but once you finish it everything will make sense
Nothing can be more confusing than steins gate, and I thought that was great
I busted a fat juicy nut when i saw that legend of the galactic heroes made it on this list
Does one of these exist for fantasy books?
Where can I watch Baccano? I’ve been looking forever
I'm SO happy Magi is on here. Favorite series of all goddamn time. FANTASTIC world building. It's like Fairy Tail but better in every single aspect, especially writing and character building.
Is there anything like Magi? And anything that's 1920s era or medieval/Victorian?
HunterxHunter is very similar to magi and also baccano is a good a anime that's set in 1930
add reborn
TFW you hope you'll find new recommendations but already watched 90% of them
Last Exile is so underrated imo.
Is there a guide like this but for video games ?
not worth recommending (SAO)
Bitch what? Of all the trash anime there is (including ones that are in this chart), SAO isnt even in the top 1000.
I'm not gonna say someone is a weeb... But I'm not, not saying it
where the fuck is ancient magus bride
Since when is Angel Beats good for a laugh? That show is only feels.
Dank af
I enjoyed SOA and FT. I think the hate comes from how popular they are and their horrible sequel seasons. Although I will say FT took much longer to suck then SOA
Nice work! how about the series: Ghost In The Shell & Fist Of The North Star?
Amazing guide 🙌🙌
No Mob Psycho or One Punch? Didn't read through the 1200 comments to see if anyone had already said it.
edit: Agree with most everything else
My life has a purpose now....
Soooooo, anyone got an alternate link or something I can use to actually read all this?
E: nvm I didn't realize the boost app had an hd button, you may carry on.
"oh sure, I could use a good laugh" pulls up angel beats, a bunch of episodes later "WHO LEFT ALL THESE ONIONS OUT AND WHY AM I NOT LAUGHING" ;-;
where the hell is shin getter
archive this shit
Where is the one just to fap at anime chics?
There's only one recommendation: Boku no Pico
Can some one post a high res version
Gotta save this.
Even though most of my favorite anime is on here, I was disappointed to not find Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
The problem with this is that I feel something like Neon Genesis could fit into half a dozen categories
Someone give this guy a golden ticket to heaven. He deserves it.
I don't see New Game! anywhere. It has a hedgehog named Sojiro in it
Easy, just watch jojo
Just wanted to say thank you for this list. So far I'm a 4th of the way through this and have found majority really good animes that I didnt even knew existed. I have insomnia so I have been trying to find new ways to spwnd my time and I am so happy I found this. Thank you again!
anime is gay
I wholeheartedly believe everyone has the potential to get into anime. This is one of those guides that i actually will end up using.
TLDR: just watch Jojos bizarre adventure
I don’t have the time to spend a couple hours going through this. Is there Elfin Leid and/or bludgeoning angel dokuro Chan on here?
I'm really late to the post, but full metal alchemist
Spent about 10 mins looking for Madoka. Pleasantly surprised to find it in the horror section.
*sees top* Oh this is nicec
*scrolls to bottom* What the fuc...
Who ever made this is god
This is great
I just want something similar to Clannad after story
You should make this a website
First question: "Something like Avatar: the last airbender?" I mean... Is that saying that Avatar should be the first anime you've ever seen? Coz I really couldn't get into it...
Also missing a ton of awesome ones (or at least I can't find them) like Prince of Tennis, Black Lagoon, Eden of the East Golden Boy, One Punch Man, and Monster
Monster is near the bottom.
AHH there ya go
It was a bunch of Americans first introductions to the larger medium, a segue from normal Nickelodeon cartoons. I think you'll find a large portion who praise it grew up with it on and used it as a gateway. If you are already deep into anime it is far from what you are used to.
Well, both Avatar shows were super popular among Western kids, and appeared on a lot of kids' show networks around here. Like Pokemon, Avatar is one of the few anime that many saw and enjoyed alongside Western cartoons as kids.
Also, a lot of the ones that are missing came out after the chart was made. Some of the unfinished shows have completed since, as well.
I guess the guide is targeting anime for kids rather than adults
Well, I'd say much of it is too mature for kids, but when introducing people to anime it's good to use anime that people never quite realised was anime and enjoyed at some point in their lives.
>anime
> cool
Pick one, ya filthy weeb.
My ultimate anime recommendation: quit watching anime you fucking weebs
r/justneckbeardthings
anime != neckbeard
[deleted]
Maybe he’s referring to the amount of effort someone put into making this
Yes but it's a fucking cartoon. It's for kids
There are plenty of cartoons, even Western ones that aren't (just) for kids. King of the Hill, The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, Futurama, etc.
Berserk deserves more love imo. Yeah the manga fleshs it out better, but the Golden Age Arc trilogy of movies and the currently running anime are damn good. I'll never understand why more people aren't aware of/into it.
I mean I love Berserk but I do get why it's not mainstream popular. It's pretty dark by any standard. It's good but it's like the Blood Meridian of anime.
I like you, fan of both Berserk and McCarthy. We'd get along. It definitely is dark as all hell, I personally find that to be part of its appeal. And while I would never expect it to be mainstream per se, I am usually shocked by the amount of people that just haven't heard of it at all. I am in my late twenties and know tons of people around the same age that are into the generally well known ones (FMA, AoT, BeBop) and always want a more "adult" anime but some how never stumbled across Berserk. I guess thats what really boggles me.
Because it’s just itchy?
Berserk is great, but I think the OP chart is written by someone who has been watching anime for so long, they've forgotten what its like to be someone who's just being exposed to the genre for the first time. There's absolutely no way I'd throw Berserk at a first-timer; way too much violence and dark themes.
Heavy use of 3D in anime is something that I can’t stand. It just looks so weird to me.
Should I watch the 90s version or the newer one
90’s first 100%
The 90's one covers the Golden Age Arc and cuts off during a crucial turning point in the story. The newer version starts with a trilogy of movies covering the same arc but follows it through to the end, thats where the new show picks up. For continuities sake I'd personally recommend the newer version. Both are worth a run through though. Also definitely read the manga if you have the opportunity to.
Is there a good "discount" cowboy bebop? Just finished all the content and theres a hole i need to fill
Check out Samurai Champloo! It has the same director, same episodic format, and a similar anachronistic setting. I actually prefer it to Bebop
Boil it once it’s possible.
Space Dandy if you enjoyed the comedy scenes enough to watch a whole show of that.
Samurai Champloo, same studio who created CB.
If you liked Cowboy Bebop, I'd recommend Trigun. It's not quite a space western but it's really good and feels somewhat similar especially towards the middle and end.
Based lukeatlook.
Am I dreaming or is there no Saint Seya !?
Start: looking for your first anime? No
why does this exist
SAO is not worth recommending? :/
No.
Only if it's abridged.
Here’s a recommendation: don’t watch anime.
Why?
"How to be a virgin for the rest of your life for beginners"
FTFY faggot.
Kinda disappointed Mob Psycho 100 wasn't on here, it's got a bit of Comedy, Action, and Drama. One of my faves
It's because this guide was made years ago, before MP100 ever came out
Well that explains it
Lot's of care clearly went into making this, but nobody is ever going to read that massive jumble in the bottom 3/4 of the diagram. It's the flowchart equivalent of 500 sentences stuffed into a single paragraph with no indentation. This would completely overwhelm a beginner.
It's best to keep recommendations concise for people new to pretty much anything.
I find it disturbing that i had to scroll so far down for Elfen Lied, yet Death Note is right at the top.
I mean, yeah, Death Note is really good!, but so is Bleach (another one clumped up with all the classics). I'd say start with the classics and then move up the list.
one piece the most popular of them all, when dragon ball is right below it?
(X) doubt
One piece is the most popular in Japan right now and rightfully so it’s gasss.
Well One Piece is the best selling manga of all time so it's not really that unheard of
guys, this is /r/coolguides. A getting started for your weeb-career isn't exactly fitting
The amount of people upset their favorite isn't at the top is astounding to me.
No Ranma 1/2 anywhere to be seen???
Look under martial arts;)

It is by definition a flowchart, as you start at one node and follow paths to other nodes according to decisions or answers to questions. It's a guide to anime just like someone can write a guide to anything subjective, not everyone agrees on all the details or even on the basic premise at times but it's still a guide.
This would be cool if I hadn't quit watching anime years before anyone who watches anime today was even born.

DB is on there.
TFW no jojo
It's there, under action adventure, to the right. However if you think that is a good starter anime you are WRONG.
It's the only anime i've watched
Well I'll be damned. But you'll agree it's not for everyone and could scare some people off the whole genre.
Yeah it's very unique, which is annoying because there isn't much similar stuff I can watch now that I'm finished.
Surprised Kara no Kyoukai is there. It's not really for everybody but, if you like into deep complex and dark sickening stuff, while accompanied with great visuals. Go for it.
Now, that's a long one. I can condense it for you: Watch One Piece.
Where tf is JoJo
Action Adventure > Pure Fun > Classic Comic Style
Ok thanks
I feel a lot of anime fans online are becoming out of touch with the kind of anime younger generations watch. It reminds me of my cousin claiming "no THESE are the classics" while calling things like bebop and inuyasha were just trendy.
This is kinda old
Are you an adult? Yes -> stop watching cartoons
Lol
Here's my flowchart:
Do you like anime? - No - Good - End
Do you like anime? - Yes - Consider your life choices and go back to the beginning.
Look 0 po 0l00p000p00
SMH, Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece or Bleach is all you need to say
There is a note in the chart that he is mentioning only "reasonably short anime".
Oh yeah, I see thanks man.
Still, it only takes about 20 episodes of the big 4 to get someone hooked on anime forever
This might be hard for you to believe, but not everybody is into generic popular shounen series #57.
Its not without a reason generic popular. Most likely the show is good.
Not hard to believe. However, most people found anime through one of those 4 so it's the most effective method
pulls out gun
^where ^is ^jojos
Calm down Joseph, it's on the chart, you just need to look harder.
You heccin WEEB

Trigun is in there.
This is such a bad list. Its like it cant decide if it wants to be contemporary or pay homage to the most famous ones.
Fuckin weeb
It's comprehensive alright. Unfortunately for me I've watched 95% of the titles displayed. Also kinda disappointed there aren't any great anime movies on the list. Directors Miyazaki, Shinkai, and Otomo are great places to start to fall in love with anime.
TLDR
Want to watch some anime? --------> No. Anime sucks.
Umm I think it’s worth highlighting one piece and naruto as some of the godliest shows of all time.
anime watching tip: watch ghibli movies and akira and stay the fuck away from literally everything else because it's all really really bad and you don't wanna be the anime defender guy
90% of all media is crap, there's just a lot of it in big names in anime because a lot of anime is cheap shit designed as an ad for the manga/LN.
i think there is only one anime better than one piece this anime recommended by mr beast and uak
The time spent making this
The time spent watching these
The time not spent outside.
Nothing compared to the hundreds of awesome hours spent watching Gintama.
Let’s go out open my mind
Gintama is eternal
Better than time spent watching Love island, xfactor or Britain's got talent.
I wouldn't say either is a better use of time. If you enjoy it, watch it, just don't overdo it.
If you enjoy it I wouldn't say there's such thing as overdoing it. It's a choice they can make themselves.
If it's effecting you mentally or your social skills are suffering that's a different matter entirely.
Thing is it does and people are in denial about it.
You could probably say that about every television genre
I'd much rather watch anime over tv generally speaking. I do however see a lot of people getting so into anime they think reality works the same way and it doesn't.
I think watching anything for a majority of your time is unhealthy... you need a balanced experience of what life has to offer because that's what makes you who you are.
I'm a total hermit, I've spent most of my time gaming so I'm guilty of it... my social skills are shit and now I'm in my late 20s trying to figure thingd out. Haha
I think those against anime and videogames are just ignorant though... it can happen with anything if you overdo it.
"What did it cost?"
"Everything."
I'm kidding. Do whatever you enjoy.
nothing compared to the time spent mastering the blade
I for one am glad someone watches anime, because I actually like youtube videos that cut together the best scenes and analyze the main themes in voice over (Super Eye Patch Wolf, for example) but I could never imagine actually watching the vast majority of this, anime tropes and conventions are just impossible to wade through.
I watched pretty much all of these. And then some. Best part is that I normally skip the intro and credits and no ads. So it's like 15ish minutes long. I just started attack on titan again and I smashed through like seasons 1 and 2 in a night while doing laundry and other things.
How do you multitask while reading subs?
I am on it for 10. And clean for 10
Do you watch them dubbed? I'm scared to since so many English dubs are bad
Rarely. I personally prefer subbed. I am hard of hearing now. So subs are kind of my jam.
Actually I had a group of people helping me with this. I have certainly not watched everything on this list. Nor have I put everything I've watched on this list.
Yet Devilman is nowhere in sight?
The guide is a bit on the old side so Crybaby wouldnt be out yet and I'm not sure I would recommend the trippy sexual violence to someone new. Unless you're talking about the super old adaptations.
Couldn't finish crybaby cause of those scenes. It was too weird whenever I was on drugs.
Yeah definitely not something I would recommend watching while high
Dude, totally.
But I recommend finishing it. It’s a really good anime if you can stomach an unhappy, hard story.
I'll have to give it another go, for sure.
Prepare your heart.
I mean, if you’re recommending a horror anime with trippy and heavy elements it should definitely be mentioned.
I would argue it should be on a flow chart like this. You like horror? You like trippy horror? You like emotionally devastating horror that will leave you shaken?
Devilman: Crybaby.
This chart is a few years old now so the new one didn't exist then and the original probably didn't qualify.
This isn't your average every day weebiness
This is advanced weebiness
Was not spent by OP, but rather by /u/lukeatlook, who made this four years ago.
Is less time than watching all of One Piece?
Can someone spend time making one of these for fantasy books?
