Or your PC goes to sleep from inactivity somehow
Or your PC goes to sleep from inactivity somehow
Rookie mistake lol
One quickly learns this when one simply don't turn the computer off when you don't use it. Far to convenient to have it turned on.
[deleted]
On/off cycles reduce the lifetime of a power supply more than on-time.
Realistically it wont make a difference because you'll replace it before it ever wears. But why leave your pc on generating heat? Also you'll have fans constantly spinning as well which wear the bearings, and fan bearings are about the only thing that will realistically die in a 5-10 year lifespan of a PC.
The heat your PC generates while idle is negligible. Running your fans at low RPM won't wear them out in that time frame, the CFM difference between 100% and 60% speed in a computer case is almost nothing. Even if they do go out they're only $5-10 a piece to replace, and you probably wouldn't have more than one wear out in a PC's lifespan.
All of that being said; it's because you can use your PC constantly and instantly, that's why I leave it on. Downloads running, being able to remote in (wake on lan can be setup sure but is annoying), etc.
I live in a hot country, the heat off my pc is quite noticeable, especially since I have 2 side by side.
the power bill, that's why I don't leave it running when I'm not using it. if I am gonna be away from it for more than 10 minutes, it is going off.
Everything I've heard is that it's power cycles and the associated expansion and contraction causing stress between dissimilar materials that wears out components- some of the oldest/longest-running systems are those that have years of uninterrupted uptime on them
[deleted]
The computer itself uses a negligible amount of electricity. It takes very little to keep fans running. Powering on and off uses relatively more.
The monitor, especially larger screens with brighter contrasts, uses the majority of the electricity.
Hmm... I think the heat that my GPU and CPU generate used to be electricity or something.
Then again, they probably won't be generating a lot of heat if you just leave the computer on without anything resource-intensive running.
Modern CPUs have 5 sleep modes and regulate themselves to optimize for power consumption.
Your blender probably uses more electricity to make you a smoothie than your computer uses a whole day sleeping.
Exactly. Most modern Gpus essentially shut down if you're not playing games, that's why so many gpus are able to completely turn off the fans.
I leave my PC on all the time but let my monitors turn off after 30 minutes.
Yeah, but even the most inefficient PC isn't going to cost much in power.
Let's assume your PC is pulling 250w while "idle" turned on and downloading a game. That's quite higher than what most modern PC's would pull, but we'll use it for simplicity sake. The national average for a kwh is 12 cents, so leaving your computer on for an entire day only costs $0.72, about $0.03 every hour you leave it on.
The whole power cost argument doesn't really apply to PC's. They can draw a bit when you're gaming, but even that's only a jump to like $0.09 an hour, at the absolute most assuming you're SLI'ing two GPUs and have a horrible 300w TDP CPU somehow.
This reads like someone that doesnt pay any power bill. Trust me that shit adds up and extra hundreds a year to a bill is not cool.
I pay my own power bill and leave my PC on 24/7 AMA
Power is super cheap, if I left lights and computers on all the time it would probably still be under $100 a month.
How much energy you think is actually used to keep the cpu, gpu and ram at complete idle?
In some countries people pay more like 29 cents for each kwh.
Even at your low energy price you still end up paying $100 or more a year for basically nothing if you let it run when you do not use it.
250watts and a full year of uptime are both purposefully exaggerated. His argument still stands. 250 is what a medium pc would use while gaming. 80w is expected with high power components.
so at 0.09 assume i have the pc off for the 12 hours i don't use, saves me $400 a year. sounds good to me
No computer consumes 250w at idle. He purposefully exaggerated. 250 is what a medium pc would use while gaming. 80w is expected with high power components.
so about a $100?
still sounds good to me
Yes, but you're still thinking about keeping the pc actually on 24/7 365/365 and that's unrealistic. It was just an example, just like 250w, and just like 80w because that's way higher than any normal pc.
I'd still rather shut it down since an SSD takes 15 seconds to load, but the amount spent in energy would be negligible
this thread entirely discussing whether to leave your pc always on or not. and at the end you say that's unrealistic anyway, all the math means nothing.
k
Always on does not mean 365/365 of course
[deleted]
My point is that it'd be about the same amount hour-per-hour as leaving the ceiling fan lights on. It's a negligible amount of electricity when stacked against other things, especially high power drawers like a furnace or air conditioner or refrigerator.
[deleted]
I think your cost-benefit analysis is a bit atypical, but if you want to walk around your house in the dark with no temperature control just to save a couple of dollars a day, that's your call bud.
No computer uses 250w at idle, it was an exaggeration. 250 is what a medium pc would use while gaming. 80w is expected with high power components.
Oh my god, not an extra $100 a year! His parents are going to be living in the streets at that rate!
Unless you're trying to survive off of minimum wage, that's not even noticeable.
...no. Granted, i don't think the PC is too much of a power drainer, especially in the winter it just ads as an extra heater. I also remote into the PC every now and then, so it's nice to have it up and running when i need to.
This happened to me the other day. Needed to redownload GTAV. Set it to go and left for work. Came home to 15% done and a snoozing computer. Lazy fucking thing.
Whoa whoa whoa, hold on their fellow human, blame not our future overlords to be for your mistakes, you may find the consequences to be severe.

Yeah, but full songs have been replaced by full games.
Overnight downloads on Kazaa were usually for full albums. You queued like 25 different versions of the 12 songs on the album in hopes at least some of them actually would download, and weren't fake or otherwise useless. Completing an album sometimes took like three or four nights.
And even then... I remember only finding out years later that my pirated (and recorded on CD) albums from back then contained some songs from other artists, or weird remixes, because I got them off Kazaa and had no idea what the real ones should sound like.
Bob marley - “bad boys (cops theme)”
Looks legit better download.
For my boy it was red red wine, he was making a Marley mixtape lol
I'm just joking about the slow internet speed back then.
eMule anyone?
In those times I downloaded shit with such a high speed as 60 kb/s. Max speed at that.
Emule never downloaded above 20KB/sec for me anyways, even with 3 mbit cable in 2001.
3mbit in 2001? Holy crap, that's like, my speed NOW
Poor guy.
I get pissed if I see a download bar at all with gigabit fiber.
I get even more pissed that I am limited my by SSD’s write speed.
That's my average download speed in 2019
Where do you live?!
Irish countryside. I'm just far enough away form the town that they won't do fiber for another few years. Thankfully I'll be moving out soon.
Kazaa? eMule?
What the heck are these things?
How young are you?
Enough to not remember a time before USB and Wi-Fi.
I've also never used a floppy disk, and I've never used Dial-Up. I was born in the early 2000's.
Missed dialup, well you missed some interesting times. NO BODY PICK UP THE PHONE!

Yeah. I'm somewhat disappointed about that.
I feel old for scrolling this far to get to this reference. It took an hour to download a mp3. Much later my first downloaded full movie was The Matrix. It was a real media file of 60mb and it felt like magic to see it.
Midi files was the shit.
3.2 megabytes per hour for me typically, and that was when I lucked out and connected at 52.6K.
[deleted]
But I never did midi. Even in ‘96 with a 14.4k modem you could download an mp3 song in half an hour.
I had 33.6k modem and it was slow as hell when the cheap hours kicked in. My friend had 28.8k modem before me. I did however have an integrated 14.4k on my compaq presario in -94 that I never used because "wtf is an internet?".
compaq presario
Now there's a name I haven't heard in a long time.
This is why, when I downloaded Mass Effect back in the day, I decided to stay up all night.
...my parents caught me at 4AM and let's just say it didn't go down well...but at least it downloaded!
All that matters
lol, the thought of a kid staying up all night only to watch the download bar fill is somehow so funny and pure.
No amount of explaining to the parents could save you there but yet I understand that excitement all too well.
Is it weird I like loading bars more than games?
You should play Destiny 2 on a console. You can choose your loading screens!
But there are no loading bars on the loading screens :(
You should play a game called loading screen simulator. It’s literally an infinite loading screen.
Nice. I'll check it out

I hate the Kyle/Karen Klub
That's why I love qbittorrent's throttle button so you can download more slowly when people are around. This is important for me because our Network speed can't even get to 5mbps.
5MB/s is a big download speed, though
He said 5mbps though, which is equal to 500KB/s
I would kill a man for 500kb download, 200kb/s gang
It’s 0.65 megabytes a second. Divide by 8.
https://www.highlandernews.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/ops.meme_.nba_-1024x768.jpg
Bits vs bytes, bud. Mbps is megabits per second. MB/s is megabytes per second.
Why would you use megabits per second, though? Doesn't basically everything in computers use bytes for size. Besides, 5Mb/s is equal to 0.625MB/s. Doesn't help that jarded didn't capitalize anything, leading the meaning of "mb" up to interpretation.
ISPs usually advertise on megabits as it's a bigger number
that's my download speed all the time :(
100kbps is good speed for me :'(
Same. Usual download speed is 50-80kbps. Worst part is if my page ts built my house about 4 fields over we could get fiber. I just don't u understand how there's such a massive discrepancy in a few hundred metres
Wait so you ARENT supposed to get 100kbps?
Bring in charge of the firewall has its privileges.
The other week I went to download a game. Said it would take 12 hours so I left it on overnight. But OF COURSE as soon as the PC went sleep 10 mins later it stopped the download
I still remember as a kid who liked torrents but didn't know about power saving options. I always left a song on loop in the background ^^

This literally happened to me last night. My Sunday before work has now been spent watching the Downloader recover my fatal loss
Huge game or slow internet? Just curious. I've never had to wait more than like an hour to download a game.
Both. Kingdom Come Deliverance. Average internet download speed is about 1.5mbs but if I want to use the internet and download a game I've got to limit it to 1mbs
Oh damn. I'm always jealous of google fiber at like 1 gig or whatever but I guess I should be happy with my 300mbs.
Shit, literally set both Metro games downloading overnight. I should check on them.
Goodluck.
How did it go?
I think he exploded from the rage at seeing he missed clicking ok in a confirmation box before it started to download
You forgot about Windows 10 updating without permission causing the download to stop
I got so tired of this that I set up a Linux server for downloads. Uptime on that server is 314 days by now while my desktop barely lasts a couple of days before Windows 10 does its thing.
I'm not sure if I'm just special or something but I absolutely cannot remember my window 10 ever automatically shutting down to update. I leave my PC running for my Plex server and to seed torrents and even going on vacation for weeks at a time it just keeps chugging along unattended.
To be fair, it usually only ever gets me one time after I've reformatted, then I remember to change the settings.
I've had windows 10 since it came out and it probably updated itself without asking 2 times. People just want to complain
You’ll start having issues once you hit 3.5k-4K seeding + light plex
That’s brilliant! Care to share your wizardly methods?
Ubuntu.com
Was looking for Windows 10 Updates as soon as I read the title. Ruined a few mornings for me.
If you're too stupid to reschedule your update to a day other than the one where you're trying to download something, you deserve the inconvenience.
Only if you ignore the warnings that it's going to update for weeks beforehand
"Weeks beforehand" IDK if you're a Microsoft shill or not (you probably are) but every time my pc or laptop was about to update it would tell me up to a couple hours in advance at most
It'll tell you it's going to update right now and you can postpone it if you haven't wandered off to make a coffee. If you're not there, it'll update and fuck up your deadline. And if you're really lucky it'll fuck up the software you're working with so badly you'll spend the next 3 hours with a support person from said software to fix it.
Because you can't use the simple scheduling setting lol. "Oh shit, you're pointing out I'm a dumbass, must be a shill!"
these people have win10 home they cant do that
I have win 10 home, yes you can. Use scheduled hours.
Lmao I do use that setting, and windows completely ignores it.
It only ignores scheduled settings if you repeatedly delay an update for weeks
I normally never delay updates because windows never tells me. The only time I get to postpone is when it does notify me and thats only up to a day at most. And after that point it starts the countdown and forces you out.
Maybe you turned off the notifications? All i know is its only updated once "without warning" for me and that was early on before i knew where to look for the updates. It will pop up in your notifications. And I've never had the option to postpone disappear on me so I don't know what the other guy is talking about either.

You forgot your WI-FI just turning off all together.
Man, don't download over wi-fi if you can help it.

This is me when trying to download Netflix episodes to use for offline later (-_-)/
On a class trip I wanted to download Netflix episodes for the long way back. But the internet in the youth hostel was very slow and didn't reach our room. So I had to hide my phone behind a trash bucket in the hallway over night.
You also end up getting an email from going over your ISP’s data limit
This was me with GTA V... Except it took 3 whole days.
Took like 10 for me. And it was on a really crappy Asus laptop and I had to hack the settings to literally disable all shadows so I could get 20fps. Now I actually have a PC and I can run at ultra and when you have experienced both it's amazing. Internet's still bad though.
Aw man that sweet sweet GTA V download that had to be carefully caressed over the course of several days

I have fiber optic internet so 72 gigs takes about 40 minutes for me. I'm definitely living in like 2022 at least.
Wish I could still do this. Have to share 1TB with 4 people, so that leaves about 200gb for me. And I use that much just from media consumption, and schook/work. Can't wait till I get a larger data cap or unlimited.

The actual freaking pain. I'm having to suffer this right now and I sat up all night logging into my origin account to fix my sims 4. Hoping it would work but nope. Had to delete my entire game and re-download it. The only game I've ever had to sit and wait for 18-30 hours to download. Not even dark souls had my blood boil this much.

Yes. I got it on a laptop and it ran like 5 fps lowest settings so I got this mod that made all the models like 8 polygons max and disabled all shadows and it looked worse than gta San Andreas. Pretty sure a raspberry pi would run gta with that mod. Glad I can actually run a game now with a PC.

73g is only like an hour at today's standards.
Meanwhile in 90's, wake up and see redial attempt then you realised there is no "hour" left.
Download size: 100mb
Free Space Required: 100gb
Or you live somewhere slightly remote trying to download at 30kb/s and the downloader has the audacity to take multiple days.
I went to sleep super early once because I was HYPED to play yakuza 0 on release and found out steam games don’t release at 00:00 :(
Those damn payday 2 updates I swear to god. I don’t know if it’s just me but I’d just download one update and then a few days later I’d have to wait about half a day just to download the latest one.
I've had this happen to me too many times and it still pisses me right the fuck off. The struggle is real
Laughs in 200 mbps
Sounds like a PC problem, don’t have that issue on consoles.
Thank god there's steam now
PS4 rest mode masterrace!
pc gaming is the worst lol
😭😭😭
Haha i downloaded Battlefield 1 in one hout with all DLCS!
Rake that peasants

Ah, you mustn't live in Australia, where we have some of the slowest internet in the developed world
5 megabit gang
[deleted]
20 Megabit download gang, but with an internet usage cap.
Damn I didn't even know it was possible to get Internet that isn't unlimited these days. My heart goes out to you.

Good old oligopoly business policies
YoU wOnT uSe MoRe tHaN 1TB eVeR, iTs sO mUcH!
Comcast: Buy these Minion toys or we’ll screw ya over for life
Cable one......
256kbps gang here
That's depressing. I get 1000 Mbit uncapped for like 13.30 AUD/mo. (not in Aus, though)
left that gang a while ago and joined the 40mb gang
humbleflex
You might be the slowest, but here in Canada we pay the most, and for average speeds and data caps. Yay!
Hooray for monopolies! Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go write Shaw a cheque for eighty dollars.
Wait does Canada actually have it worse than the us?
[deleted]
Holy shitballs
I can literally hear epic choir voices singing that.
To carmine burana?
Probably. I’m also picturing Juggernaut of Marvel fame.
Canada has expensive internet and Australia has slow internet.
[removed]
If I recall it was the fastest Internet in the world
I pay ~$95 for internet with 185 down. Not sure how that compares in the US.
When I lived in Seoul, I paid $40~ for 185 down that was only internet. No cable TV or anything.
Now in the US, I pay $130 for like 80 down and cable TV. It blows, but the girl wants to watch shitty reality TV so whatever.
I haven't had a data cap in Canada in the last 5 years. I'm pretty sure only the lowest teir plans have caps don't they?
[deleted]
Obviously discounted. Because it's like $95 for regular price.
And yes that's actually expensive if you compare to a lot of the world.

Downloaded a game overnight last week. Peak speed was 1.4 Mb/sec
I feel like the only person in australia with good nbn
There is about a million houses with Fibre to the premise and another couple million with cable, so not really.
I have HFC. What I meant is that everyone complains about it and says it crap, but I personally have not had any issues
Even with the shit NBN, the speeds are so, so much better than what they used to be. I went from 1.5 to 25 Mbps.
I went from 4 to 100
When I was living in New Zealand, 250kb was considered fast. I was so shocked to come to Europe to find that having over 1mb here was considered normal. I currently have around 10mb or so and I'm still amazed by how fast it is!
The UK greets you! In Scotland I pay for the fastest Wi-fi available in the country, I should be getting 100 megabits guaranteed, but instead I’m getting 20-30, sometimes 10 and other times, it doesn’t even work!
112mb download for more than 5 years. Only for people who can’t get cable. But I’ve pitied many a friend over the years for that
Fuck you im paying $90 a month for 12 mbs/sec. I HATE the shift to downloading online games.
Going from 20Mbps to 100Mbps down was the greatest moment of my life. Installing GTA 5 only took 6 hours!
Haven't changed since 2004 here.
laughs in 1990s
yess and happy cake day!
Guys I'm actually downloading a game overnight for the first time in years. Wish me luck!
Update us on how it went
It went okay.

Wait... there are people who turn their computers off?
I usually do because all the blue LEDs would make it impossible to sleep.
I never plugged in the power led because of that, but it still goes off at night anyway.
There are people who sleep with their computer?!
But really, 15 and not allowed to have a computer in my room. It sucks man.
My computer is right there in the room that has the door to the back yard & no heat vent. In the winter it is cold as fuck, I have to often wear gloves. In the spring-autumn, the door stays wide open almost always, I have people running through the door constantly (like when my father is cooking, he will just be walking back and forth constantly from the grill to the kitchen). Also, can’t talk to people because everyone hears it and is like “who are you talking tooooooo?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!”, and I can hear every single noise in my microphone anyone makes on the first floor. And then they will walk into the room and be like “what are you doing? What are you playing? Who is that? Do you know them?”
Edit: sorry for ranting, it really pisses me off
It’s ok let it all out

Open up your PC and disconnect the HDD light.
Just put a blanket over your PC at night
I shut mine off every night because I have some weird anxiety thing about leaving electronics running unattended.
They'll kill you in your sleep.
Yep, I have to tie up my electronics at night. Who knows where they’d end up if I left them running.
Yeah, I'll do it almost always if I'm not downloading something because booting from an SSD means that I will be at the login screen by the time I'm done taking my morning piss and will have all my startup programs loaded by the time I finish pouring myself a glass of water. Saves on the electric bill that way, even if it's relatively minor.
It really doesn’t save any meaningful electricity by turning it off vs putting it in to sleep.
No reason not to. I have a 30 second boot time.
Why would you let it stay on and waste energy?
Start up times are like 10 seconds with an SSD.
If I'd leave mine one over night my bedroom would be hotter than the sun and I would never be able to sleep because of the fans.
there are people who don't?
You joking?
My Pc boots so fast. Why would I not turn it off... No noise, saving power, No irritating lights from the LEDs.
Oh shit my uptime is already 30 days, better restart and repeat.
That’s why I download them from work over RDP. I can keep an eye on it and play it when I get home.
Your cakeday is Groundhog Day
Why wouldn't you just wait to see 0% turn to 1% before leaving though?
Its okay. I can go to work excited that my game will have finishded downloading by the time I get home
