Well...yeah, obviously. But I try to make my rounds quick so I have time for several things.
So if I'm already passing a trash can I can only waste time and wait for them to walk away. And sometimes I don't notice them/think they're out of range anyway.

I’m in fall in my second year, and I just gotta ask, how do you guys maintain friendships and build relationships in this game? I feel like I just got my farm big enough to where I’m making good money, but it takes almost all my time to do the daily chores...I never get into town to talk to people. I’ve only been in the saloon once :(

I do, although I can’t afford all iridium sprinklers yet. I’ve been grinding every day to build this massive farm...I think when I buy everything I need and upgrade all my equipment, I’ll cut back and just spend time working on the relationships angle.
If you want a relatively easy way: Focus on your farm and fuck those needy bitches, get rich. The medium sized sprinkler works fine and is easy to build.
If you genuinely want to build relationships then coffee is a really easy product to make and virtually everyone likes it, plus you can basically chug coffee every day of your life and run faster everywhere. So it's a good thing to have going.
Coffee + Crab cakes every day. Sometimes I forget I have a horse.
Oh yeah this post is about stardew valley. Iridium gifts. Birthday gifts. You don’t have to worry about hearts for now except the person you want to marry.
This. I don't go out of my way to talk to people (except for my chosen bachelor), but I make sure to give them loved items on their birthdays. Gets their hearts up pretty quickly.
Oh, and doing quests pretty steadily on the first year helps too.
(just like real life.)
Start by just giving people a gift they love or like on their birthday. Then when you have more time you can focus a bit more on the relationships. My strategy is to pick one or two people at a time to gift twice a week until I max the hearts, then move on to the next one.
I'm going for the friend achievements and am currently dating everyone in town. My go to is mayo, cheese, and wine/beer. For the few who don't like those things, I keep random precious stones from the mines as gifts. Leah and Hallie are easy, both like forged flowers. Seb is the hardest but once you have coffee I think he's set for gifts.... Remembering that when I see him is the part I struggle with cuz he's such a hermit.
So I make it a point to give gifts to as many people as possible on Sundays. Why Sunday? The traveling cart. While I’m out that way I bring a dark energy to the wizard and then I drop off flowers to the rest of the townsfolk.
Forage-able flowers are easy to collect through the week and pretty much everyone likes them, even Jas and Gus.
In the evening I drop by the saloon and finish dropping gifts on those I missed. The only people you’ll have to go out of your way for is Elliot and Linus since they don’t really go to the saloon.
You might be overdoing it on how many crops / animals you have if you can’t leave your farm. Try to scale down so you can actually enjoy the game and villagers. Don’t forget about fishing and mining too !
Those are great ideas, thanks! I’ve really been grinding the farming to get money, which all goes back into the farm. So, kind of an endless cycle without a real plan for what the endgame is. After reading everybody’s replies, I think I’ll just get a bit of cash saved in the bank and cut my farming in half so I can actually enjoy everything else. I should mention, all my free time was going to mining to upgrade and expand the farm...so I guess I just haven’t really made time to get those relationships.

had an albacore to give to gus for a quest and a topaz to give to clint for his birthday. wanted to be super nice to clint because i’m dating emily and felt like i stole his girl. gave him the fish instead by accident, he must think i really hate him.

Ya, but I usually either chalk it up as my internal defense mechanism or that I probably don't want to be friends with that person anyway. Happens at work a bunch and I meet a lot of new people that are pretty toxic and kinda touch-and-go. If you don't jive with someone, you don't jive, you shouldn't try to fit yourself into their box as a self sacrifice to make the situation better. I'm still learning this.
You won't be everyone's cup of tea, but you're good, you don't need to be. Unless of course, you want to be. I find myself at around 50/50 average. Interesting thing is that it's higher when my self esteem is higher.

You analyze too much, obviously. Also likely that you have mistaken how important your words are. They are not that important. There isn't a thing you can't fix after the fact if there really is a need for it. Usually there isn't.
Easy for me to say: just relax, and think conversations as rivers. Jump in and find out where it leads.
