What's it called?

It hasn't been released yet

Yes you are correct. I was mistaken in thinking that it had been released but he is currently working on version 6 of the mod, so I assume version 5 is out for the public to get.

For those wondering when they can download it - a first release will come in the next few months.

Biome Bundle
https://minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/open-terrain-generator

Checkout the screenshots of version 6.

Just to clarify, this is a new mod by the author of Biome Bundle. Biome Bundle is a separate project which has been available to download for a long time. This new project is meant to keep the biomes more natural and “realistic”, whereas Biome Bundle has more fantastic and exotic biome types and world gen. The author anticipates that this new mod will release in the next few months.

Thanks for the clarification.

I was mistaken. I did read the original post but however I failed to take note that isn't out officially out yet. You can still play an older version of the mod though and some are saying that can even play it now while it is under development.

Will it work for PE?

It would be great if it did.

That's a terrible name

It’s called the “Hella Sexy Biomes” mod

This would just make my builds look even worse...

Guys. This hasn’t been released and won’t for a while. The OP even says in his original post that it may be up to a year before he’s done with all the biomes. Keep the hype low.

"hasn't been released" doesn't mean you can't download it. It's still in development but people can still try it out for themselves.

"It's such a shame it's still in Early Access™, now no one will try it."

I would still check out another mod by the creator, Biome Bundle. It’s amazing and adds over hundreds of biomes only using the Vanilla blocks, no additional blocks.

I haven’t checked out his new mod yet but I was following Biome Bundle for a few years

I have. Just not wanting people to get super hyped just yet. He’s got one biome done. I hope he finishes it. But these big projects tend to fizzle out after a while.

Microsoft should hire these people and put them to work on vanilla Minecraft.

Why? It's not like it would drive more sales to make it worth the investment... Especially since these people are already doing it for them for free.

Modders should never be your QA department.

This has nothing to do with QA... Do you even know what that means? Or did it just sound cool when you saw someone say it about Bethesda that you figured you could say it here and sound smart?

Figuring it's a minor part of my job, and I get my orders directly from them . . . yes. Not only does QA deal with fixing flaws, it has the ability to say (figuratively) "this looks like shit, redo it", and figure out the steps that are making it look bad so the respective department can fix it. And seeing how broken some of Minecraft's biomes are . . .

Biomes aren't broken... They are exactly as they were designed. Just because someone made something better a fucking decade later doesn't mean the original game was broken...

Minecraft is the best game of all time

^change ^my ^mind

'THE' best? Probably not.

One of the best? Definitely.

What’s better

An answer to that question is very opinionated.

In my opinion, Horizon Zero Dawn, Kerbal Space Program, and Skyrim are all 'better' games than Minecraft, but they are all also very different types of games entirely. Ask anyone else the same question and I'm sure they would all give you 3 random games that they feel are 'better'.

Minecraft is only a game if Lego is a game. I'd say it's more of a toy. Not saying it's bad, just... I dunno if I'd classify it as a game.

Within the broad genre, I'd put Subnautica as a better game than minecraft, while minecraft is a better toy than subnautica.

That's like saying that CS only is a game if a toy gun is a game.

Nah. CS has a way to win or lose. Minecraft... doesn't.

There is literally a final boss you ape

Okay, but the game up to and including that is pretty crap. It's all the self-directed play that matters. Which is why it's not much of a game, but a great toy.

Someone can creat subnautica in Minecraft tho

TIL sandbox games aren't games because some crazy person on Reddit said so.

This makes me want to play Minecraft again, but what to build that's the question lol

Is this the real life?

What a waste of a year

This makes me wonder - why are minecraft forests all one type of tree? Seems to me like they could be mixed up a bit to provide variety. That way you might have to hunt for the particular type of wood you want. Or if apples only grew on apple trees, and you had to find one, etc.

I recall there being a mod called Realistic Biomes for a while...

This is amazing

RemindMe! 1 year minecraft biome mod

This is awesome. You clearly did lot work for this. Really beatifull

I wish they'd include stuff like this in the main game rather than relying on modders. The problem with relying on mods is that modders generally don't cooperate. If I had a mod that added, say, a new type of ore or tree it would probably break if I tried to use it with this mod, forcing me to choose one or the other.

There's actually number of Minecraft modloaders that ensure that mods all work alongside each other. The days of manually modifying the minecraft.jar and dealing with block ID conflicts are long gone.

I wasn't talking about block ID conflicts. I was talking about mods that just don't work together, or introduce something that breaks the other. This mod, for example, would most certainly overwrite the hypothetical one I had with the other kind of ore, for example, because its new terrain generation algorithm simply doesn't contain deposits of that ore, making it never appear. If that ore was important then the resulting experience would include a completely broken mod.

There's also ways to handle that. Minecraft modding has gotten a lot easier than it was 5+ years ago and mods almost always "play nice" with each other - at least at a basic level.

Intriguing. The last time I attempted Minecraft modding was, indeed, around that time. Tell me more.

It's not particularly difficult. The way Forge do this, is to have so called 'dictionaries' that terrain generation mods can look up in during biome generation.

For example, the OTG (the above mod)'s terrain handling code can go into the above dictionary and see the default ores of maybe iron and copper at y-level 80. So it spawns the veins of iron and copper at this level, as it now doe,s to make it look awesome or whatever the mod actually does.

Enter a new mod that adds tin. Now tin is part of the dictionary above and everything will work automatically since OTG will just look up the ore dictionary for y-level 60 where Tin happens to a part of, add it into the world generation and carry on.

The same can be done with trees, bushes, grass etc in biomes and so on. The difference being the terrain generation looks up a dictionary of available resources in this area, and then places the (possibly random) selected resources, rather than directly placing 'iron', 'copper', 'pine tree' or whatever.

The difficulty then becomes making _this_ process of selection look natural and not just 'random', but that's an entirely different discussion.

There's forge, a very powerful modloader with all basic systems (energy, items, fluids, ...). Most mods build on top of these systems so you can create energy with one mod and process ores from an other mod in a machine from yet another mod with cables and pipes from a fourth mod. It works farily decent, not perfect though

[deleted]

that sounds nice and makes me want to try minecraft again, I used to mod my game hard spending hours to make it what I want and then one thing wouldn’t work and I’d scrap it. Maybe now 5 or 6 years later I can actually experience the game I wanted to play.

i understand you're arguing for minecraft mods, but the person you're replying to is correct. http://openterraingen.wikia.com/wiki/Installing_OTG#Mod_Compatibility

\^mods that are incompatible with this mod

He isn't though - the link you posted states that it integrates with Forge to allow for modded resource placement.

  • NetherPortalFix causes a crash on teleportation
  • Terrain Control is incompatible as there are too many overlapping features.

These are specific mentions to incompatibility . so no, even with modloaders, not all mods are compatible with all other mods. fullstop.

though, modding has gotten significantly easier.

yeah... one is clearly a bug, and the other two are other terrain generators, so why would they work together..?

The point he was making was mods typically don't collaborate / co-operate with each other (or didn't - he admitted his experience was a bit dated), which just isn't true anymore, and hasn't been for a long time.

In the early bukkit days there were a lot of conflicts, and his example is definitely one that stands out, as there were a lot of mods that added ores that weren't included when you changed the worldgen. Likewise there were all kinds of conflicts with custom resources/fluids/etc between some of the more complicated mods.

Nowadays there's a pretty good framework to build on, and compatibility is pretty good. It's no wild wild west out there, and the mod community works together far better than Mojang does it seems.

If a biome generating mod was well designed there’s generally a way to integrate ores, blocks, structures, etc from other mods into it. Usually via JSON config files.

The cooperation among Minecraft mod'ers is one of the best and highest I have ever seen.
The modding community made an ore dictionary standard so there's a way to make multiple mods adding duplicate ores compatible.

Biomes o’ Plenty is a thing my guy

It doesn't work this way, though.

BoP uses the current system with visible hard borders on biomes. The idea of this is you transition from one to another more seamlessly and it's less noticeable when you immediately cross over.

True, however it does depend on what kind of biomes you are dealing with with BoP, if you have two different variations of forest biomes it’s often a pretty smooth transition(though I’m sure not like shown in this post but still)

Am I the only person who thinks the quest to run 512 texture packs and shaders and now terrain mods to make Minecraft look more realistic is completely missing the whole point of Minecraft?

Sure looks nice when it's not rendered using the actual game.

That actually does seem in-game. It seems to use Optifine, which is a mod commonly used in The MineCraft Modding Community.

Basically, it's used for higher optimization in-game so that at the very least you can achieve FPS doubling (relative to vanilla). In addition, there are higher graphical options like what you see here, Shaders.

The Shaders feature requires Shaderpacks though, and there's a good number of them. With how many there are, I'm not sure which shaderpack is being used here.
It's likely SonicEther's because of how popular that one is since it was considered the best for a couple of years, but nowadays I think there are better shader packs out there, at least that's what I heard.

Looks better than Fallout 76

you should have made this in 2012. People are playing fortnite nowadays.

You don’t really know much about the Minecraft community then. Check out /r/feedthebeast to see some of the craziness the modded community is getting up to.

I’m sure, I’m just saying they’re still doing amazing things in the modded community. Check out some of the showcases and base tours in the subreddit I linked. It might just get you interested again.

Yeah, though curse and curseforge are pretty much what everyone uses for modpacks and mods these days. The curse launcher is pretty shit though, so if you really get into it you’ll probably want to use a third-party launcher that supports curse modpacks. I recommend MultiMC.

I mean it's only still one of the biggest games on the planet but yeah pretty much dead.
