Yeah it was super psychedelic and while I do love confusing sci-fi, I'm not sure if I love Lain because it might be too confusing to work.
Can't remember what I was watching before Lain that made me find Lain you know like "recommend me..." and Lain was one of the top ones.
Dystopian futuristic sort of thing
Lain will come up on any list of Cyperpunk anime worth it's salt, and most lists of good sci-fi anime or good cyperpunk fiction, so frankly it could have been anything.
It's actually a good interpretation. The show doesn't make much effort in explaining the plot and in some moments it felt like they were losing it, putting on random events and trying to make it fit. The show is more abstract, tbh but Lane could be a real girl who got in contact unconsciously with a greater being, via her computer, who helped her to go trough a new and mysterious path, turning the girl into a sort of messiahs. But I agree with you that the whole point was to illustrate "humanity's collective unconcious that exist everwhere within the internet".
The show makes perfect effort to explain Lain her world and who/what she is. Maybe not in the most conventional way of story telling but that IS exactly what makes this serie so great.
I'm really fond of the series. But they don't really explain what happens to Lain trough it. I agree that they show us clearly who Lain is and how her world is like, but the whole meaning of everything that happens to her is open to interpretation. It wasn't clear if her whole life was a simulation, or if her memories were real, or if she just got brainwashed by some internet force to became it's slave. But I think that in the end it doesn't matter, the story isn't really about the Lain we were presented in the beginning, she was just a tool.
It was one of the first series I had on dvd. Been years I watched it but I am sure that is makes much mor sense then freaking Neon Genesis Evangelion and I am sure thtat most of the things you point out are covered but I think it's perfectly normal that everyone who watched this show has got their own ideas/vision about it.
