Classic image of a saint mixed with modern bits, love it.

Yeah, this really is something.

What if God was one of us

Just a Slav like one of us

Squats and prayers

Can't forget the vodka

Just a stranger in the Sub

God is all of us

I think you just circled back to Jesus lol

I thought you’d link a specific icon. I love the way contemporary Russian painting refers to historical legacy and doesn’t seem to be as trapped in postmodern irony and anomie as western painting. They make a case for a civilizational alternative.

[deleted]

It's also strikingly similar to this classic masterpiece.

The link is blocked in accordance with Federal Law of Russia.

Should have been a phone instead of a book

Agree. It’s so good.

She looks like Rose Byrne

She looks like Tolokonnikova, who was jailed for punk prayer

I’m totally enamored by this style.

Love how the subway map works as a crown

Halo, but yes I too like that subtle detail

Aureola is the proper name.

So essentially a golden nipple?

Yep, definitely halo. I think her hood is meant to be a crown of thorns though.

I don't think so. It looks like it's meant to be reminiscent of the lines in the Theotokos' hair in images like this.

Or, just a headscarf, like most female saints are pictured with, in Eastern iconography.

Hmm, that could definitely be the case.

In either case I think the artist did a superb job of capturing religious imagery in this. It's really one of my favorites I've seen here in a long time.

Isnt this alludes to Pantokrator? 1 hand holding the book, the other makes the “ICXC” sign

Dang, good catch!

Thank you for the link. What do you think the circles on the left of the image represent? I can't quite make out what's depicted in them. Are these also common in religious art like this?

A lot of orthodox icons have circles which will contain a portrait of a different saint or religious figure (like St. Michael) I think it's just a reference to that.

Those are just some sort of meters for something

That’s so cool !!! I just noticed it.

Well yes this whole piece is a "modern take" on orthodox icons so she's enlightened by the halo in the background.

It feels more like her head is part of some sort of printed circuit board. Nice touch.

here is some of his other work

I didn't see this one on there so I'm assuming it sold already.

I really like Isolation and Heavenly Drummer, although the latter does creep me out a bit.

The one in here is by far his best piece.

Holy fuck those prices.

I'll never be rich enough to appreciate art ahah

There's prints for that

Gooood word use. . . Oo, and I see the love in that word! Wow. Ah, man, sharing stuff is so good. So good. Excellent imagery all round.

Enamored of or with. Enamored by means that this style is crazy about you.

Same. This feels like the style of so many movies I love.

Enamel is like intimidation do you mean?

Rose Byrne? Looks like a dead ringer.

It does look just like her except with those half closed Russian eyes

Don't dead, open inside.

Inside? Dead. Open? Don't.

My first thought. Came here to say this or make sure someone else had it covered.

I just hopped on to do the same. I'm not going to read through all the comments but I wonder if she was a source of inspiration for the subject. Rose is Australian but I'm pretty sure she's played a Russian before.

To me it's spot on Nadia from New Girl.

Until proven otherwise, I'm gonna believe it to be true.

Why don't you get in your spaceship like Mick Mouse?

I’m pretty sure that woman has a ninety degree angle inside her

i thought that too! i had to do a double take when i first saw this painting.

I see Shannon Woodward.

Theotokos, the Virgin Mary

More like Natasha Gregson Wagner I'd say. And she's half Russian

This is about to end up on r/metro2033

I will never forget how the Metro Plan looks thanks to the book

I'm so hyped for the new one, I hope it doesn't disappoint

It really can't. The author of the books is working with them and they've already postponed the launch. I think they'll be alright.

Dirty capitalist, taking traders as her lord and savior

[deleted]

This guy (or girl, or whatever) gets Metro. Completely. Please give them updoots.

It's not the Hansa ring, it's the new Moscow Central Circuit, it wasn't there when the books were written. The trains on that line are really comfortable. It's not underground, though, so it wouldn't survive.

That looks so insane cause the circular rail line is like that irl

That's another fun fact I didn't know I wanted to know, but know now.

Yes, Moscow metro has circle routes.

Just bein in the moscow metro was amazing. by far the best in my life, and i've seen many

That thing is confusing as fuck though and I am a Moscow native lol

Idk, I've been living here for a few years and I've found it pretty clear and intuitive. Now the Tokyo Subway, holy hell is that a clusterfuck.

I am also Russian but I don't live in Moscow, I find it really clear haha

Thanks! I love these maps

There are a few concentric rings like that iirc, this is the outermost one

This is some of the coolest artwork on this sub, good shit!

Thankee. Is there any way to buy a print of this?

“There's only one thing that can save a man from madness and that's uncertainty.”

Cool quote. What is it from?

From Metro 2033 :) a book based on the post-apocalyptic Moscow metro.

Interesting. I'll have to check that out

It's also a video game series. Third game is out Feb 2019

The Moscow metro is mental, massive with beautiful artwork in most stations.

It’s also super clean and efficient. Probably among some of the best public transportation in the world - no bullshit

Really is, I was so impressed when I saw it during the World Cup this Summer.

nO iM nOt A rUsSiAn BoT

I'm new to Russia will visit this June. :D

The way how details of highlights and shadows are created is great. The shallow highligh edge on the top, the cables twisting, the lights on the fingers. So great.

The texture on the map and the precision of the map is awesome as well.

I don't know what it is about this, but I really like looking at it. Never had that before, really. Is there a higher resolution?

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a higher resolution.

Interesting fact - the painting seem to be very recent to say the least, as the cyan-ish/yellow line at the top left was launched early this year. Amazing art, a lot of attention to details.

Wow I didn't think about it and I lived in Moscow!

The parallels to Renaissance art here are amazing. The headphones take the traditional place of a rosary, the book references holding a Bible, and my favorite detail: the subway map behind her has a circle of yellow going all the way around her head, suggesting a halo.

The parallels to Renaissance art here are amazing

Less Renaissance, I'd argue, and more Eastern-Orthodox icon paintings, like so: link -- More specifically, the image of the Christ Pantocrator, which is far more associated with the eastern branch of the Church rather than the western branch. The style is wholly different, but the icon paintings are known more for this sort of composition and the Moscow prayer -- rather than just prayer -- points towards that Orthodox connection as well.

For sure Christ Pantocrator, the symbology rings true. It's a well done piece.

What also interesting is that if you look up russian icons, you'll see tradition of putting scripture into left hand and use right hand to make sign of the cross. But in this painting it's mirrored. I wonder if there is some meaning to it.

I just really love how the rail lines make a traditional halo outline. It's such a great detail. Also, isn't the trinity sign done with the right hand?

It's not actually yellow, it's red with white in the middle. It's the МЦК, Moscow Central Circle.

This is an orthodox icon, not renaissance.

Yea this looks like a modern variation of Salvator Mundi

Are they really just parallels if that's the whole point of the piece?

yes. They're not actually wearing a halo or holding a bible, the headphones aren't actually rosaries.

I believe her hood is meant to be Christ's crown of thorns as well.

DUDE. I gotta take another art history

Pointing to the heavens as well.

ITT people pointing out details that this paint is obviously refering to for karma

No no, they're "subtle" details. It's a cool painting and all, but it's about as subtle as a brick to the face.

Nah man look closely its actually an halo omg

If u look at her hmmmn headphones dey um look like a rosary and uhhhh the uhhh halo looks like uhhhh orth or docks

This image is a little upscaled and muted from the original, so here's my own 2560x2560 version with the original colors.

(It's not perfect, but I tried)

what a lovely interpretation of an icon.

Such is life in the metro

I live in the Midwest but, the second I saw that map I knew it was the Moscow Metro. Thanks 4A Games.

I've been to Moscow once for a week and man is the metro there amazing.

Reminds me a little bit of Metro 2033. Minus the headphones.

stalin did stay strong, he kept to his ideals and did what he wanted

[deleted]

This is a pretty common pattern called https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_Pantocrator

Um, that looks like Rachel from Ozarks

Reminds me of papers please

This is Dope AF. My house is filled with ancient icons that look JUST. LIKE. THIS. Andrey, you knocked it out of the park. OUTSTANDING!

Has a look of Rose Byrne about her, I very much like it though.

I had moved to Moscow to study from a one horse town in the middle of nowhere. Every day I would take the subway to get to the university at 8 AM and back at 9-10 PM. The first year there was so exciting for me, but also exhausting and surreal. This image captures perfectly the atmosphere and state of mind on those commutes. Moscow is a crazy fast paced city and for a lot of people subway commute is the only moment of tranquility and rest throughout the day, like it was for me back then.

This is crazy awesome! What a brilliant idea and execution!

I'm crying! Maybe because of my chilli fingers, but the awesomeness of this painting certainly helped!

puts this in my icon corner

awesome dude, for some reason it reminds me of Jenna Marbles

Amazing work, I really dig the modern take and use of the map as a halo.

I am totally astound with this artwork. please continue doing this kind of beauty.

Quick glance this looks like an MTG card lol

This is just such a good painting, it's so neat

This is just plain beautiful...no need for words

this is so good I want to put it on my wall

Me trying to decipher the true depth and hidden meanings behind this

She looks like Rose Byrne.

Gas mask breathing intensifies

Isn’t that just Rose Byrne in Silverlake?

Reminds me of the Emerald Herald!

Stunning! The map creates a subtle halo.

Is there an HD version of this or did he actually paint the letters on the map to be blurred :O

Interesting what you learn about the Moscow metro when you've read Metro2033...

I totally dig this style of art. Please post more this is actually really good

Anyone else getting a Tarot vibe off of this? Almost an Empress feel to it

wow, reallly dig this! my first time ever commenting on a reddit art post

Amazing! Anyone know how to follow the artist?

Here is his official site: http://www.artshatilov.ru/ At the bottom there are links to his social media.

Im love with this picture.

Huh, I know I sound like a reddit NPC but this is really incredible work

Bravo. Great composition, atmosphere, setting. Iconic.

Whoa I took a break from reading Metro 2033 to browse and find this!

I am amazed at the talent of some humans.

I am completely in love with this

This is my new background picture.

I love the style of the piece. The emotions being portrayed by the girl. The subtle details of the hoodie and her finger wrapped around the earphones.

that's a cool hoodie. would rock.

I get Oliver Sykes vibes from it. Amazing work

It’s like a Slavic Wynona Ryder

I'm not awake enough or enough of a student of iconography to write about how utterly fantastic this is

I love it! I used to live in Moscow, it says ‘no smoking’ on the right.

Stunning work mate. This is def one of my favourites

I thought this was Rose Byrne

Torn between clever and r/im14andthisisdeep

The halo of subway routs is a really nice touch.

Using the circle Line as a halo is brilliant

I thought, typical happy smiling Russian.

Smile for the camera. But I AM smiling for the camera.

Welcome to the21 century. Nailed it! Next time im in Moscow im taking the gold circle metro rout

They are the railway angels. Have you seen one as of late?

They, gazes lowered and heads bowed, are the few and the silent-- but they look just like us. They journey with us in railcars, overworked and seated with sagging shoulders, Gazing out the window at nothing visible to you But no, they are very aware, hiding behind a mask of tired eyes.

If you're lucky enough to catch their gaze, if they steal a peek to check the upcoming stop, Before either of you blink, in that fraction of a moment you see something flicker Behind those ancient, knowing eyes. Something difficult to explain, but you know for certain it was there

Upon this capture, they bless you with a smile. An unexpected, glowing grin. Coming from someone seeming so exhausted, it encapsulates their face in light, Revealing their presence to you, and only you. Mind your senses, and you can feel that light welling within you, too.

If you receive this blessing, their gaze returns to invisible places, But that warmth will still linger Along with feeling yourself easing into this light's comfort and protection. You might notice that the weight of a day's work has lifted As if you'd been embraced by the breath of God Himself

Inevitably you arrive at your location, and the train slows down. You get out at your stop. To make sure, you turn around one more time only to find that they are gone You shrug it off, though you dont recall anyone departing with you But that warm feeling in your chest says that someone was indeed on that car

These are the railway angels Have you seen one as of late?

Compulsory writing. Sorry guys

wow! holy fuck this is good

This is giving me a metro wibe. The book more than the game... Now I want to read it again...

Most people on the Russian metro don't look this tranquil

Wow this looks so much like Rose Byrne, any inspiration there? Awesome work!

This reminds me of that one Rasputin pic.

Looks like she is holding a book of mormon

Reminds me of the artwork from Coup.

Андрей, она так палец себе повредит((( Печалька какая то

The book should be something kindle-like instead

Yep, that is exactly what a Russian looks like

Beautiful yet bleak.

Where can I admire more of his works ?

Moscow, Moscow insert* dancing Russian power rangers

Reminds me so much of the game metro

That's an unfortunate last name.

Where can I find more of her work? I google this piece and this thread was the first thing that popped up

It's him, and here is his site: http://www.artshatilov.ru/

Lucie Wilde has gotten in touch with her artistic side during retirement I see.

Hey it's Nadia from new girl

Am i the only one who thinks the girl looks like Rachel Cook?

Looks like Rose Byrne portraying a lost reporter who is trying her best to make a name for herself, but then got into the game too deep.

Anyone knows where can I get a poster of this painting?

Da Vinci is maybe the origin of this portrait style of sainthood

No, this is Christ Pantocrator https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_Pantocrator

Bingo. You’re spot on, chap.

[deleted]

The metro system in Russia is in fact capable of becoming a massive nuclear shelter, they have blast doors in some sections.

I’ve been living here for a couple months now - you realize that you don’t smile often in public in American cities either - it’s kinda weird. Also the stations are beautiful.

Metro 2033 says hello!

Prayer that Putin may finally retire, so that time unfreezes for Russia ...

NewYork MTA map in the back... ❤️

Did you even read the title?

Yeah ? ,but Can you #ELI5 ?

It's the Moscow subway map, not the NYCMTA map. You know, like the title suggests.

Cool i got it. Tittle says moscow prayer only.

I'm quite interested to know how you thought that was New York. As far as I know, there are no circle lines in NY. In Moscow there are 2 and another in the process of being built. And even in the other cities with circle lines (London for example), the circle isn't always represented as such on the map.
