I love how old school movies from Japan still feel as ridiculous as modern anime.

This guys 'alter ego' costume (mind you, the western getup is his daily wear) is what Viewtiful Joe's costume is based on.
I love Japan.
Showa era tokusatsu is the tits! I can not recommend it enough.
Just watch the original Kamen Rider and witness it's fun, campy, goofy glory.
Kamen Rider is the best thing ever
Seriously though!
[deleted]
Just google XIG.
i rlly liked the faiz, blade and ryuki. ryuki was quite grim dark tho i feel.
As a person who has been a fan of anime since I was 10, I think I've become desensitized to it
Japan is the Bollywood of East Asia
Good modern anime. A lot of it takes itself WAY too seriously.
Modern war series in China still look like this. And people love them!
Clip is from "Kaiketsu Zubat" (1977)
Just seeing the word Zubat makes me annoyed. Guess I’ll have to avoid as many caves as possible.
Gotta spray that Repel like it’s fire extinguisher.
Or just level up your rock type while you're there anyway.
That's all fine and dandy till your using defence curl 40 fucking times to get to struggle because your to fucking cheap to use an escape rope.
Gotta eat that booty like groceries
How does that word annoy you? Why are you avoiding caves? ... I'm confused.
Zubat is the name of a pokemon, its commonly found in caves and has become infamous for showing up unwanted constantly.
-edit: stop downvoting the dude for not knowing pokemon, that's dumb as shit.
AND it's not weak to starter-Pokemon types.
BUT it also totally blows in battles which means it's not worth even trying to catch one for yourself.
Crobat's decent
True, basically an X-Wing.
Hello there!
tfw you can't get Crobat in FRLG before beating the Elite Four
[deleted]
Just gotta level up friendship with a golbat. Been easy for me, I assume it’s because no one loves golbats
Crobat is alright and gets some relatively high damage moves quickly in the recent games.
Yeah but to get crobat you have to make golbat your friend, and that just doesn't jive well with me.
Only while its a zubat or a golbat. Once it turns into Crobat that's where the fun begins
They are if you played Yellow.
Yeah, but then EVERYTHING ELSE in caves sucks.
I evolved a butterfree to fight brock :(
If you know to grab a Mankey from that patch of grass on the way to Victory Road (carefully avoiding the rival) then you're golden. But 8-year-old me sure as shit wasn't figuring that out.
Yeah I figured it out much later too :)
Not to mention it knows supersonic /confuse ray
It is literally the most annoying pokemon in the games.
And it's fast. At similar levels it goes first.
There is only one reason to catch a Zubat.
It was the 1980s. Zorro was playing at the cinema. A wealthy family walk down an alley in a bid to get home quicker in the rain. Their chauffeur was on holiday.
A gunman. Mad eyed. "Give me the pearls! And diamonds! And your wallet! Also any Poffins you have!"
The gunman's koffing mockingly smiles at them as a scuffle breaks out.
A fight. A father dies. A mother is crying.
Gun in her throat, pearls atop the gun.
Bang.
A child is traumatised.
It is now 2018. And Zubatman will defend the streets of this city with his army of trained zubats! https://i.imgur.com/yoN4wOG.jpg
In your respect, I upvoted the dude.
Careful not to hit yourself in your confusion.

Ugh. People still do this?
Ah Zubat, the heroes of Pokemon...
One of my biggest pet peeves as a child
Zubat is short for "zubatto," which is a sort of impact sound to them, like "bam" is to us.
I know what I'm watching this weekend.
If you actually do, reply to this when you're done and let me know how it is!!
It's fucking insane and I love it. This guy is the greatest in Japan, at whatever anyone throws at him I fucking love it it never gets old.
It’s amazing... holy shit!!
https://youtu.be/LhocOx6w8ig here’s another dope clip
[deleted]
The whole thing is amazing and I’m surprised OP or someone else knew and got it this high up there in visibility. But there are iirc 31 episodes and they’re all amazing, same quality and the story actually captivated you like three episodes in. I’m like in a state of shock, I totally forgot this existed and I’m gonna find a way to binge watch it.
This is the first time I've realized that "zubat" is "zubatto," the japanese onomatopoeia for hitting something accurately.
The best part is that he shouts Zubat every time he does a good jump.
As soon as that dope as fuck car came flying in I was sold. Then he came out with that fly as fuck outfit.
Zu-BAT!
Ironically, this is blocked in Japan
Not really since Japanese companies are draconian when it comes to content ownership.
One the bad guys is Admiral Fukuyama from Legion!
Damn that was great
I love that he leaves a zankanjou for the police
.
This is for me to remember to see as well
Here's a notification so it'll be even easier to remember.
Wow thanks dude! Here's another for you to remember.
Allow me to point out to you the "save" link which you can find under every post and comment.
Dude.
Ditto!
Does anyone have a good source for this - torrent or otherwise.
How do you find shit like this? I liked watching the original Kamen Rider from 1971 because of how outlandish and low budget it was at the same time.
Zubat? That's japanese for bomberang?
It's a sound effect.
ZU-BAT
No, the premise of the shoe is that he's good at whatever the show needs; not just the boomerang.
Kaiketsu Zubat
Wow. This is glorious.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWQhzIuj8Vs
Is this where DBZ got “Great Saiyaman?” Lol these clips are bonkers.
Great Saiyaman is just a parody of the Tokusatsu genre.
I don't think he's a send-off of one specific show.
Holy crap that's obscure and this is coming from someone decently well versed in showa era tokusatsu. I've seen my Kamen Riders and Kikaidas and Super Sentai, but I think at most this guy has had like, one appearance in the heisei era. Is this series fully subbed?
I think the last appearance of Zubat was during the Kamen Rider 40th anniversary movie.
I must find this film and see it in it's entirety
It's a show! 32 episodes
Where can I watch this?
We Indians are still making these shit in 2018!
Hey dude, could you kindly upload this clip to youtube please?
Is that Tatsu from teenage mutant Ninja turtles?!
My life is richer for this, thank you.
This looks amazing! Where can you watch this?
Where would I even watch this?
Thank you
Thank you. I didn't know about this, and I'm a big fan of tokusatsu. This is life-changing. Your comments are the second best in all of reddit.

The Maryland point
During the late stage, he actually uses his boomerang to heal himself while also removing your armor. Be very cautious since he can stun you by removing your pants.
Don’t forget his stunning gaze.
He's a hundred years too early to defeat me!
This is the fist of the North Star knockoff that I never knew I needed.

For some reason this kind of show of 'badassery' is really common in Japanese flicks. This is obviously for humor, but it's in ultra serious flicks too, like the Seven Samurai.
It's always the same - someone challenges the hero, and he does something really slick and badass. Kinda reluctantly - 'oh, if you insist'.
In American cinema, you usually see the hero being challenged early, and failing, and only at the conclusion do you see them become 'badass'. It's an interesting difference. The American/western way is to show them improving by the end, while the Japanese flicks have a tendency to establish their badass early and stick with it and watch him overcome adversity.
I wonder what sort of cultural sociology informs this.
It’s an interesting dichotomy.
A big part of American culture has been, for a very long time, the idealization of individualism (especially rugged individualism). So it makes sense that American stories would tend to be stories that involve or even require growth, self-improvement, and empowerment of the self as major themes. The highlight is reaching the potential, but the story is about getting there.
As for Japanese culture, I don’t think I know enough about what you mentioned in particular to speculate. I’ve only been getting into Japanese film and its history somewhat recently, so there’s still a lot to learn.
I've always been more fascinated with the Western climb to the top, but what's so fun about that is seeing the payoff in their incredible ability. Modern anime storytelling is seeing more struggle with adversity and in improving oneself currently. Seeing a badass be badass, and watching a badass form his as of yet unachieved badassery into something wholly badass are two very different experiences, I think.
Dragonball is an old balance of this. In the original Dragon Ball Goku is already a badass op kid but it just keeps escalating and escalating into Z and now into Super. Its 30 years and 3 series worth of badass character development.
you usually see the hero being challenged early, and failing
Meh, for every one of these movies, there's a John Wick to go with it. Lumping American action movies as one or the other is kind of a crapshoot.

Yes. Boomer isnt that hard to defeat with the buster cannon. You just have to practice
Gotta learn that pattern, yo! Old school shit right there!
When i used to casually speedrun mmx boomer was one of my run killers. Usually i could beat him pretty well but if i got there with low health and frankly just fucked up, i'd just reset since it was the second stage in my route
I frames and shot counting brings back memories both good and frustrating lmao
Buster only is a bit easier in the first X game because of an oddity where if you dash and fire a lemon it deals 2 bars of damage to bosses instead of the normal 1. This way you don't have to just do charge shots.
Oh man, tricks like that and abusing i-frames. These are the things that spurred my sad efforts to speed run
