Assuming that very generous interpretation, he's also missing the fact that knowledge about the future/present doesn't determine the past. The past still determines the future. That's just how causality works.
E.g. in the grandfather scenario (which his example basically is), you know that you or really anything failed to kill your grandfather by your very existence. However your existence doesn't determine the fact that your grandfather lives. There's no magic force created by your existence traveling back in time to make it so - forcing you to fail to kill grandpa. Your existence just informs that to be true. The past event of you failing to kill your grandfather still determined this future.
That's the same thing, but it's just relative to the observer.
You only exist because of your grandfather's actions in the past, but from your grandfather's pov, you only exist because of actions he will make in the future.
I think this is what the kid realized on his own, but the idea of different perspectives based on relativity confused him, and he was too cocky so he figured his (wrong) assumptions made him a genius.

Ok so again I know the sub I'm on but still, Quantum Mechanics can actually be explained relatively easily. Steven Hawking's A Brief History of Time has some really good, simple explanations on really fucking complex stuff. I suggest you give it a read if you haven't, I really liked it.

I think with some concepts, you feel really smart when you start to understand them, but that's because in popular media they've been presented so poorly as to make your understanding look genius in comparison. But then you realize, it's not magic, it's math and physics equations that help make sense of what we observe (and don't). I'm no expert in any kind of physics, but it seems to me that it goes from fascinating to tedious pretty damn quick.

What genuinely upsets me is that people go "oh I'm so depressed and I'm smart- it correlates". Like no asshole, you don't understand what mental illness really is. You don't understand how the bipolar that runs in my family leaves us depressed to a point of cold, unfeeling, machines that are only driven by "well I have some sort of stimulation today, so I don't have a good reason to end it quite yet". You're a shitty person for trying to associate yourself with mental illness for trying to be intelligent. When I was younger and would go through manic episodes; I'd go through fugues and just not remember what I'm doing and where, or stare at a wall because my mind is racing too much for me to even actually be conscious/aware of my own body and surroundings. My family and I also happen to suffer from severe insomnia. It's not a good trade off to be intelligent and lack so much sleep your muscles burn from exhaustion. When you're that depressed and exhausted, your mind tends to veer to the easiest, least effort way of life that doesn't force you to have to play by the rules. Maybe that is why intelligence tends to be higher in those with mental disorders, but it's a depressive intelligence when it's at its peak (in my opinion). The intelligence isn't geared towards progress, rather being able to make your miserable life as least miserable as possible. I think that if I were any more intelligent than I am (not trying to say I'm anything special- just that if I were more intelligent than I think is average), I would genuinely trade that intelligence in to get rid of any mental disorder/illness I suffer. I would love to be able to live without medication that keeps me from passing out from sleep deprivation every week, or to be able to live without the need for medication that keeps me from seeking a single thing that stimulates me enough to convince me not to just blow a hole in my fucking arm to see if it hurts as much as I think.
I know it sounds edgy as fuck, but this is legitimately what life is like for many of the people with depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar. Imagine seeing a person who's steamrolled through life that makes you think "wow they live life in hard mode"- living like a basic normal human being can often times be living life in hard mode for people like me.
Edit: conversation and input from others suffering mental illnesses I mentioned and included is very welcomed. I like hearing the stories of others and how they cope, but I also am not always aware of variations and would like to learn about them.

Why does everyone thinks that being depressed and smart are linked? Chemical balances happen to the best and worst of us.
I think it comes from the trope of "depressed people see the world as it really is" evolving into "only the truly intelligent will see the world that way, everybody else are just mindlessly naive/optimistic/whathaveyou". And then there's the whole issue of romanticizing creative genius and the idea that you have to experience pain to produce something meaningful.
And, like, there might be a some amount of weight to those things, but I hesitate to even say that because there's so much nuance to it. I'm trying to figure out how to succinctly elaborate because I'm short on time, but I don't really know how, and man, would that be nice because I can't think for shit when I'm in a bad depressive episode and the last thing I want to do is pick up some yarn or paint or whatever.

I guess you learn to just work with it. When I was younger I didn't understand that my baseline was a living hell for other people. I would always get these pitying or awestruck faces when is explain everything to others. When it's all you've known, reasonably speaking by; it's just normal for you. I hadn't realized how abnormal my normal was though until I finally got the medical assistance I needed. I mainly feel bad about hose who were worse off than I was, or those who cannot get medical help like I'm getting.

I believe that you are right in most cases, but there are some people who genuinely have an issue, but don't quite understand it- they're immature in understanding and expression. There is a pretty upsetting mental illness romanticism that I see often when people are just genuinely ignorant, and yes I get that those are the people you refer to. I generally keep myself invisible on personal-public profiles, only appearing for a rare meme, but I don't see it fit lecturing every ignorant cuck that I see glorifying mental illness out of ignorance. It's far easier and more productive to just ignore those on public profiles and discuss with people in person when you can.
I don't engage them either because I honestly don't know their story beyond what I see. But you will be judged on your actions.

It's just a thing everywhere that quantum=magic. Every time something fictional needs some reality-defying device they just shove quantum on the front of the name and somehow that makes it ok. As far as most people are concerned quantum = undefined magic, even though every semiconductor device that surrounds you relies on some understanding of quantum behaviour to function and that understanding is so banal we use it to control lights, warm up bad prepackaged food and send cat memes. I get it's not a simple thing - from firsthand experience of both quantum and the people who understand it better than I do - but it's not actually magic, it's just a little odd.
