How to stay positive 101
We call it realism
Realism equates to a lack of self-discipline and motivation? No thanks.
well good for you
This is classic /r/getmotivated caliber cynicism.
people looking for motivation are pessimistic and unmotivated?
well color me surprised
The problem is looking for motivation on the internet on the first place. If you really want to get motivated, get to work now and hopefully the motivation will follow. Successful people don't try to get motivated, successful people get organized and get to work.
- someone who logically understands how to get motivated yet still isn't
It's past me that needs my help.
Right? Why can't I email my past self the winning lotto numbers?
Future me: Invest in Apple, Tesla, Bitcoin
Future future me: Forget all of that, all that money actually exacerbated the self-discipline problem
Too true. I would love nothing more than to tell past me to be nicer to yourself.
You can help your future past self!
What if time is a circle, and all you have to do is send it far enough in the future to arrive in the recent past?
I sent one to myself that says sucks nuts bro, for 10 years from now. Gonna be great.
Who knows, maybe you'll be sucking nuts in 10 years
You know it
[deleted]
my man
I've been know to suck myself.
You will probably have a new email by then and have forgotten about the message.
I did this like 8 years ago and I got the email a few years ago. The cringe is real
I just sent one to myself to be delivered every 6 months that says "check reddit, I bet the link to futureme.com has been posted again"
Fortunately it's futureme.org :D
There is that yeah. Maybe I should send one to myself about getting correct details.
If not: post it again.
I'm going to ask my future self if Dank memes are still exist and remind him of some of our memes maybe he can use them and get all the karma.
Sent one about 7 years ago. Got it about 2 months ago. It was a damn Rick Roll.
I should do this. Edit: I'm recieving one at 9/11/2016
[deleted]
I used this back when I was 14. It works and I can happily say I did get these things.
http://imgur.com/gallery/Qs50Q4e/new
What have you done of you?
You don't think he have done of himself, but he do.
Did you get them?!
Yeah, in fact I got a NEW longboard and a NEW bike.
Oh look at you Mr Money
Oh look at you Mr Jelly
But what, in fact, have YOU done of YOU??
I've been around
Ask not what you can do of you...
Send your future self a dick pic
I feel this didn't serve its intended purpose for me (though it is a really cool site...2 year ago me and present me actually disagree about stuff, weird!). I remember exactly what I wrote and I know exactly when it is arriving.
No, past me. I didn't get my life on track or make positive strides toward being a better person. You and I are basically the same, I just have shorter hair and I got fat again. But, I'll be sure to tell future me to get his shit together when I forward your email to him.
Future me has this in the bag. He's the responsible one. I'll let him know to get on that. Tomorrow.
Inbox by Gmail Allows you do to this by creating and "snoozing" notes or emails until a specific time.
While it doesn't have the same novelty, it can be very useful.
Can you fuck with people and put in their email so they think it came to them from the past?
You have to validate the email before they will actually send it, just to stop this sort of thing :(. There probably is a service somewhere which will let you do this though.
"Stop going on Reddit, you stupid fat neckbeard! Holy shit!"
[deleted]
Well not with that attitude.
And I am not just repeating some dumb meme, now is literally the only time where change is possible. Go for a run, start playing an instrument that you have always found interesting. The first step is always the hardest :)
Letting me write a letter to my past self would be so much more helpful
I'm gonna send myself a link to a bizarre YouTube video! I just have to pick which one.
oh dear
This one. You know what it is.
Eck Seek You!
/r/DeepIntoYouTube
Next step is sending mails to the past !
And don't forget to make one of the most famous Visual Novels about this, and name it Steins;Gate.
This has been around for awhile -- I sent myself an email 5 years in the future in 2003 when I had just started graduate school, and completely forgot about it by the time it arrived in 2008. Very cool to do!
"I bet you didn't do shit you lazy fuck"
What's the likelihood that this website will still be up in 5 years? pretty slim, no?
Anyone have a statistic on how long websites usually last?
Not sure about 5 years from now, but I used this service in 2008 and it's still around 7 years later. I tried to make the date for the letter I sent really hard to remember, so I'm expecting mine sometime in the next couple years.
Probably went to spam folder and you missed it
Nope I made sure to do a text one and made sure my spam filter didn't block it. Not actually expecting this one for a few more years if I remember correctly.
Doesnt cost a fortune to have a site like that up.
not like its hosting videos or anytrhing fancy that requires a lot of hardware
but then again, i dont know.
space jams official movie site is still up.
http://www.warnerbros.com/archive/spacejam/movie/jam.htm
that ad is awesome!
It's been operating for over 10 years already I believe.
I started using this site about 7 years ago and have received two emails from it. Seems to be pretty stable. Even so, if it shuts down I probably won't ever notice since I send myself emails every few years and forget about them every time.
Or you still have your same email address in 10+ years.
I've sent myself an email to get there for my first few days of Uni. Hopefully then I'll realize if I'm still the socially inept mess I am and fix it, that I am now, 3 years before it.
Cool as fuck site.
Oh, I remember using this website! 2 years ago I sent myself one to the day I turn 21 about drinking, and the science on what to eat and stuff before going out to get my first drink. I also sent myself something on hangovers the day after that... Hopefully I wont have to use it xD
I guess I am old fashioned using calendar reminders set in the future.
I do this with Google Calendar.
Weekly, it sends me a list of my current goals.
Annually, it emails me 4, 2 and 1 week before birthdays I buy gifts for.
[deleted]
You can add reminders when editing an event, including email notifications.
Dear Future Self,
Hahaha! I'm eating all the cheesecake now! None for you!
-eggswithcheese
Oh screw you. I wanted cheesecake. Now there's none left.
-eggswithcheese.
I'm writing 14-2 letter to have something to read in this special day... 24 cards sent :(((
I'm 16. If I attach my nudes, and send it to myself in 2 years, will I be charged with child pornography?
thats.....hmm....a good question.
Yes.
Would be better if you could send emails to your past self. Especially stock tips.
I use this every time I'm on an airplane. I set it to email my family 2 days after just in case I don't make it. It' sort of like a will. I tell them how much I love them in stuff. You just cancel the email after you make it back and repeat every time.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^0.7536 ^^^.
A little bit, I usually lead with something like "I write you guys this email every time I fly just in case" I let them know so that they don't think I'm a weird ass ghost or something.
why just when flying? you're more likely to get killed doing nearly any other activity that you do, and on a daily basis.
I used this site (or one like it) about 10 years ago. Just like clock work the email I wrote to myself arrived 5 years later.
I told myself "Acetylene, if you are not married or in a meaningful relationship when you get this IT IS TIME TO ACT." Or something like that. I just sat their stunned at my own bluntness. Then I signed up for eHarmony.
They actually published a book in 2007 comprised of letters people had sent to themselves. One of my letters was featured in the book. If I remember correctly, I think it was about some girl that I thought I was in love with, despite having never held a prolonged or meaningful conversation with her. I know it was written during my middle school years, so around 2005, I would imagine. Ah, adolescence.
You know, I did one of these back when I was 14 ( 9 years ago) and I never got it when I was supposed to :( I wrote all kinds of angsty teenager stuff too.
I used this to send my girlfriend an email. It was 6 months before a big move, new jobs, new college, new city; the expectations of what might happen and if we'd even be together at that point.
Really cool idea!
Fuck, I'm pretty sure I actually used this site in middle school, but I can't remember the password to the email account I sent it to. :(
I'm saving this to do when I'm crazy stoned so I don't remember and am genuinely surprised when it shows up.
I did this a few years back and got the email one or two years ago. It was perhaps one of the most heartwarming things I got, honestly. It said where I was then, what interested me, my thoughts on the future, and all that which just made me feel great about everything. Sent myself another one for a year after I graduate uni in case I need a bit of help reminding what I'm doing (though I'm already more than halfway).
I told my future self in 10 years to suck a dick. Isn't the internet great?
I just sent a rickroll to myself and I've already forgotten the date.
My 18 year old self sent a super peppy message to my 28 year old self about how much she was planning to achieve and how excited she'd be that I'd have achieved it all by now. Present me is angry at that stupid cow.
She also sent messages to another me 10 years from now. Fuck that bitch.
This is very good timing. Today I found out that I can get $5000 out of a retirement fund I have when I turn 50, which is 9 years from now. I wondered all day how I could be sure to remember, and this is the perfect birthday reminder email.
This seems cool, although I can see me writing an email and forgetting about it, then when I get it back sometime in the future being confused on who sent it. XD
xD
I've done this often, it's pretty amazing. I wrote a letter to myself when I first started talking to this guy I met on Omegle. Three years later, we live together and the message almost made me cry
Read this as Future Meme. I am now dissapointed.
If only you could send an email to your past self. Way more helpful
I just wrote one to myself chastising myself if I still have the same job, and haven't gotten over my fear of change. Also if i haven't painted that garage yet...
Any danger of this landing in spam? Saw this thread 3 years ago and I'm not sure how many years in the future I sent mine originally.
I used this some weeks ago to send a email like 3 years from now. GOD damn I better not disappoint myself by then!
I've been using this site for about 7 years now. It's pretty incredible to get something from the past. They're usually pretty emotionally charged since I only tend to write when I'm in a pickle but it's nice to open and read them once I'm in a better place. Cathartic is the word I suppose.
I'm waiting for one to arrive this Jan.
I'd recommend LetterMeLater instead. Lets you add a specific time, create contacts and some other stuff.
is there an app where you can do the same thing, but with a text message?
Just use Google's Inbox. Has reminder settings.
/r/future_me/
How odd, I just received my annual one today and this just happens to be on the front page...
Dear Future Self,
Well done last night. Great eyes and D cups. Very nice.
--Signed, Past Self
Brilliant.
You can do this on Gmail. Just schedule the email to be sent on X date.
Wow, totally forgot I wrote an e-mail about 4 years ago. It's gonna be delivered hopefully in july 2021, can't wait to be surprised by it.
I got this once. Kinda freaked me out
I did this last christmas. It was basically me telling my future self about the day before. I remember raving about my now ex-boyfriend and how amazing he was.
27th of december's going to be the day of cringe!!!
I used this a few year ago. I wrote myself a letter for every month for the following year.
The first 4 or 5 months started out pretty good... they were all lining up with my goals and I was accomplishing them. Then about 6 months in... my life kinda derailed Financially and I was hating getting all of these chipper "attaboy" emails from myself. It stung a bit. I had such high hopes. Makes me nervous to do it again but I'd like to try...
It's quite an idea but the problem is that in this fast paced web world where tons of services shutdown on monthly basis so there's no guarantee that said mail will ever reach you.
I sent one to myself two years ago and it arrives in a year. I wish I could read it now though :/
Is there a future you where you can send other people emails in the future?
I've been sending e-mails to the 18 year old me for about 4 years now (one e-mail a year), only ~11 months 'till they arrive!
The great thing it that I don't remember anything I've written in 3 of them, so I'm gonna have a big surprise :D.
Can't wait to find out what I did today a year from now.
I wrote one to myself on December 19, 2005 (when I was 14), for my birthday in 2007 and all it said was
Happy Fucking Birthday
Then I made a new one on that birthday that said:
I just got a message from the PastMe and it said happy.....birthday.(with some words between). I was 14 when i wrote it so i guess i had an attitude or something so i put some "choice" words along in it. Well, FutureMe, today's your 16th birthday and it sux! it's 11:12 A.M. and your sitting at the computer, watching VH1. You just called your mom because you have to get a TB test at the health department for your trips this summer. Well i'll let you go! see you in 2009!...You're 18th Birthday!
Oh the cringe. I can't believe I typed like that (and thought that cursing at 14 was so beneath me). That day did end up sucking however, because I passed out when I had my shots done. Unfortunately I never got the message for my 18th birthday :(
The last time I used one of these things a few months later it shut down and just sent all the emails early.
I did this 4 years ago and it was supposed to send a few months ago and it never worked :c
You used the wrong email.
hell yeah, I'm gonna send myself an email on my wedding day so I know to calm the fuck down.
[deleted]
What does that have to do with anything? It's not to remind you to do something that you forgot to do, like an alarm or something. It's a fun way to either see what your perspective was, or to just bring you some nostalgia. Just because you remember writing it doesn't take away from the novelty of a site like this.
I participated in the Forbes email time capsule about 10 years ago. They were collecting emails to send back out twenty years later.
I wrote to myself about a threesome I had that year, and how kickass it was, and that I had to remember it.
But I think about that experience about once a week... so I'm never going to forget that email that I sent. I still remember the email vividly to date, so I don't think it will be much of a surprise if its delivered to me in 10 years.
damn! Either you have really good memory or that experience was really good.
This is amazing. DONE!
[deleted]
Future you is cynical.
Surely depends on the length of the message? Sure I could write a dissertation to myself or I could just send myself the message 'Always remember that you are awesome!'. It would take a few minutes, if that after the verification. The amount of time people waste every day and you can't waste a few minutes to receive a message in the future that might cheer you up?
I used it years ago and it worked. I'm pretty sure it will be around. But more so, writing a quick note takes what, a few minutes? There's no risk. Not sure why you would even worry about that.
Dear future felix, callum is awesome remember that. signed felix jeffery truman masters.

Super cool until you realize they make you pay for this bullshit lol
At least i'm getting one message for my birthday :D
Happy birthday me!
Sign up for a bunch of vBulletin forums and don't lie about your birthday.
Oh man, I get at least 3 a year from different boards. I think Build A Bear stopped when I turned 18. I'm kind of disappointed.
Its cool they knew to stop eventually.
At least your birthdays aren't as sad as ROVERs.
Same here. Today's my birthday, and I sent one ten years into the future to chastise myself for still being a lazy underachieving layabout.
