Fallout 3 used GFWL? Hmm. I think I never started FAllout 3 without FOSE. Also. Pro-Tipp: IF you have Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 3 think about using Tale of two Wastelands. The main page is offline atm but if you look for it you can find a mirror. I recommend some mods to slow down experience gain and the unofficial patches.

I believe it connects the Fallout 3 and Fallout NV worlds, so you can travel between them (by train) without switching games.

More than that, it allows you to play FO3 in the NV engine. The implications of this are massive — NVSE & NVAC are a powerful combo for fixing Bethesda's famous crash-to-desktop bugs.

EDIT: It also brings Fallout NV's wonderful features to FO3, and allows you to play FONV mods in FO3. Fun stuff.

Wow, that's crazy good. I'll definitely check it out when I buy NV.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Installed what, NVAC? That's quite strange. Are you using NVSE?

I am, yes.

That's quite unfortunate. I hope that's resolved. I've never had such issues.

How does it work with the main quests?

[deleted]

Except the NV version comes with a number of new features, such as proper aim-down-sights, Caravan, a better faction system...

If you're going to be technical, the NV runtime framework is better. But that's not what anyone says colloquially, as the "engine" in the context of this is referring to the engine + runtime framework when talking about video games outside of the developer world.

Bit drunk and posted my comment without much thought and then promptly decided to delete it.

Basically what I said was it's the same engine they have used for all their games with mild improvements and new vegas was just obsidian trying to make their engine work. But even so there were still a shit ton of bugs and memory leaks and save corruptions like every fucking game released on that engine.

That's definitely true. I have no arguments at all there. Thankfully, there's a lot of work done on NV via mods to make that kind of thing less prevalent. NVAC, NVSR, CASM, and the Yukichigai patch all make it much easier to deal with. CASM keeps your games automatically saved and NVAC/NVSR/Yukichigai make it so you crash a lot less frequently.

In no case would I say unmodded Fallout is even remotely stable or performant. But with a decent amount of effort you can make it reasonably solid.

No argument there. Greatest thing about the Bethesda fan base is the extremely dedicated and talented modders.

That's fucking brilliant.

Wonder if it was done by the same people who turned Baldur's Gate 1 + 2 + all expansions into one huge connected game.

What's that called?

Is it any good? Like, would everything from Fallout 3 and NV be in it? Will it switch between how Fallout 3 plays and how NV plays, Wild Wasteland and etc

You basically use the FAllout NV "engine" to run fallout 3. so only fallout NV mods work (afaik). But there are not that many bugs and it works quite well. You just have to take care of the leveling system. And of course you have two main storys etc.

There are FO3 mods that are patched or merged into their New Vegas equivalent on the TTW forums. A lot of the good Fallout 3 mods are.

There's also a script they your can use to convert FO3 mods to be TTW compatible.

Ahh nice. Seems like i have to give it another shot sometimes soon then.

I've actually just started playing it about a week ago. Highly recommend giving it another try.

What's wrong with the leveling system, IIRC you get more xp in NV than in FO3.

yeah but if you have the exp of both worlds, you really come to max level soon. It's not fun to be at max level after half the experience.

Fortunately, there are level cap mods available.

Can't say for sure, I haven't personally installed it. I'd assume everything would switch over though.

You play the games like normal, but it runs FO3 in NV engine, meaning you can use iron sights, reputations are active, etc...then you can travel between the two games with one character, continuing quests and such as normal.

How do I get that?

It puts fallout 3 in the fallout NV engine so you can run on multiple cores of your processor instead of just one. This also comes with some mod functionality. It's the only way I could get FO3 to work on my windows 7 comp

I'm oddly having a lot of trouble finding a mirror. Any tips?

Didn't think to check for a subreddit for it, thanks!!!

Geht mir genauso. Ich drücke es mal so aus. Wenn du die Versionen gekauft hast und zufällig an eine internationale Version gerätst, kannst du diese doch mit gutem Gewissen installieren ..

That's a shame. I really enjoyed A Tale of Two Wastelands.

Is it worth it?

NV works fab on windows 8.1.....never installed F3 however.

fallout 3 can have problems under windows 8.1. But as you don't use fallout 3 but NV you're fine. Fallout 3 is worth it. NV has the better story, but fallout 3 has the better world and some great sidequests. At this price, you should give it a try if you liked NV.

Boom. installing fallout 3 to see if it works on my POS rig ;3; :D

and thanks also ive had fallout 3 for around a year....just never had time to play it....was building into war thunder....and now borderlands 2...

It's probably best to play Fallout 3 through New Vegas so you can play both games in one playthrough.

I never played Fallout before, bought and installed both 3 and NV yesterday. Planned on playing through both without mods first but seems like that's not really the best way to go about it.

Is there any other must-have mods for playing the game for the first time?

Does it work with the standard edition?

edit: To answer my own question, no it doesn't. God bless Steam return policy so I can buy the GOTY and Ultimate Edition.

[deleted]

I'm doing this and so far it works great! Getting TTW and mods working properly can be a little frustrating though.

I never had any problems, and I had about 10 vanilla FO3 mods installed, the problems only came when a mod required FOSE, but the overwhelming majority of mods that did, had a new vegas equivalent or one built specifically for TTW.

For sure. I played FO3 for years it seemed and I was never fully crash free no matter what I tried, and I tried it all, including cleaning the DLC using FO3edit.

New vegas was very stable.

one of the most creative games when it came to buggy areas. i couldn't leave one shop or my game would crash, the only solution discovered. was to purchase a cowboy hat and wear it while exiting lol.

Haha! Strangely funny!

That's fucking hilarious, never had anything like that happen.

I just completed my fallout collection by buying F3 Goty. Many thanks for this thread brother!

Yeah, I bought it a couple of days ago (before the flash sale) and I was having trouble getting it set up until I found this guide, so I wanted to share it with my brothers here.

I have windows 7 and it's still unstable. Kinda frustrating.

if you set both the launcher and game to run in compatibility mode, just in case you haven't done this, also there is an unofficial patch that i'd install.

Try this: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1328904

[deleted]

Are you using any mods?

When I tried the unofficial patch, my game wouldnt work.

If you own New Vegas and don't have the censored versions of the games then you can play the game through New Vegas(which is a bit more stable).

https://taleoftwowastelands.com/

There's an app on nexus mods that completely removes GFWL on fallout 3.

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/1086/?

You'll get an error with the app saying you are missing fallout.ini, just copy it to /my documents/games/fallout3 from the app directory (in the app directory it's called fallout_default.ini or something like that, just coy and rename).

Nice! Do you mind if I add it to [my list of Fallout 3 mods that fix gameplay issues?] (https://www.reddit.com/r/Praise_GabeN_Bot/wiki/fallout_3#wiki_mods)

Sure, not a problem.

Also another key thing is you don't have to install GFWL when using that app from nexus mods.

This might help you with adding more mods: https://youtu.be/-SAeXsA6Nt8

Or also buy new vegas and install tale of two wastelands.

Open up the fallout.ini file (backup the file as a precaution)

Find the line:

bUseThreadedAI=0

change it to:

bUseThreadedAI=1

Add another line after it and insert:

iNumHWThreads=2

This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze. '

This is the easy fix I found for windows 7 on a Steam forum. Probably already posted here, but I just wanna post it in case it helps.

Sweet thanks!

I perfer the method of Just adding it to new vegas :)

I'm running 8.1 and all I had to do was update GFWL which is part of step one. I read it was going to take an hour to fix, so either I got lucky or people are too complicated. I tossed some basic mods on, (FWE, MMM, WMK, Project Beauty, Fellout, Streetlights, DC Interiors, and some UI mods) and now I'm ready to explore the Capital Wasteland.

Lol I bought the GOTY edition a couple days ago and couldn't get it to work after a couple hrs and returned it :/ oh well guess ill wait for fallout 4

I bought it a couple of days ago, right before the sale. I ignored the cardinal rule of Steam Sales, but whatever.

Much thanks for posting this. It's been crashing for me constantly since I got it, hopefully this fix works.

I went through the guides on windows 7 and it wouldn't work. I ended up realizing that it kept crashing because I was using dual monitors. Turning the second monitor off wasn't enough but when I unplugged it the game started up like a charm. I hope this helps someone!

I wonder if that was my issue...but to unplug my second monitor to play would be far too annoying!

Relevant Got it back in 2008-ish.

Edit says it released in 2009 on the back so yeah, about then

I know I'm a little late to this thread, but I'm kind of surprised it wasn't this link to the pcgaming wiki. Seriously, if you're ever buying a game that's been out a could of days or more, search for it on there. You'll typically find what kind of options are available, any essential mods/fixes/workarounds from the community and is generally a great site to quickly see how stable a game is.

Nice! Thanks for this OP

Any tips for Windows 7, I tried everything I found and it's still crashes. (GOTY edition)

[This might help.] (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1328904)

Thanks, it's one of the first posts I found and still no :(

Another tip I can give for Fallout 3 is to only use actual saves, not quick saves, as they can help cause the game to crash later on. I had a good 50 hours all on quick saves which became corrupt and the game was virtually unplayable.

A fix from nexus http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/20371/?

Saving for later

Fallout 3 never crashed on my Windows 8 PC, when it needed 20 fixes on Windows 7. But somehow New Vegas doesn't work. And I thought 3 was the buggy one.

If you're using Intel HD Graphics, the game will crash when you try to start a new game. Use this mod to fix it.

I've never had it crash on my Win8.1 machine

Bought it and it only crashed once when i was about to die. That's what i call a life saver.

I ran it on 8.1 64 bit and had 0 problems. Guess Im just lucky?

I had that issue with Windows 7, I got the free unofficial patch and haven't had one issue since.

<3 PCMR

Why don't I have issues with New Vegas? :(

i havnt gotten over the 30 mods i need to install yet.

Yea the walk through on steam is amazing and totally works. I'm not the most competent user of computers and I got it to work.

I'm playing Fallout 3 on Windows 8 right now. The only problem with crashing I've had was my monitor being set to 144 fps. Set it to 60 and the crashes stopped.

144hz works for me

Tales of two wastelands. More stable than vanilla fallout 3.

Problem the guide dont work for me because with the "Start -> CRASH" Problem the Solution needs the Update to Version 1.7 but this updates needs first GFWL and GFWL crash during install on my Win8.1 :-( sad

none of this worked. The only way i stopped ALL crashes was to limit the cores to 1, not 2 like most guides recommend. Since then, not a single crash or performance issue.

To Elaborate on the Process:

Open the file: fallout.ini in my documents>my games>fallout 3

and edit

bUseThreadedAI=0 to 1 Enter the line below as well. (most guides want this value to be 2, but it wasn't until i changed it to 1 that all crashes stopped)

iNumHWThreads=1

I bought it a while ago and I haven't touched it it because I have horrible frame rate after a certain part of the game inside the vault. Anyone know why it does that? I have an Radeon 6850 if that makes a difference.

I've tried all of this and it still doesn't work but maybe it's because I gulpwhispers torrented

I downloaded from Steam...tried all of these steps and it still didn't work for me.

Also : Don't try to load a high number of mods. Even with a merged patch,FO3 experiences random freezes when the game is loading a new cell with 30+ active mods.

I got lucky with fallout. I didnt have to do any tampering to get it to run. it just worked. it has only ever crashed once

The unofficial patch is a godsend as well. Use it and many problems disappear.

Graphics mods, while very pretty, tend to exacerbate instability especially as you add more. Use the CASM mod to get autosave functionality and you won't lose much gameplay when the inevitable crash occurs. Also use CASM instead of the built in save because the built in saves tend to get corrupted and the game will crash to desktop if it loads a corrupted save.

It crashes on anything.

DO NOT save a game soon after loading and DO NOT load a game soon after saving! It will silently corrupt the savegame and the problem will appear much later!

works great in wine.

Does it work on windows 7?

My FO3 problemsw were solved by disabling my second monitor.

Thanks for this! :D

None of this worked for me last week, so I gave up and got a refund. Frankly, this should have been solved long ago.

Run the game once and then use A Tale of Two Wastelands to put it in New Vegas. :D

Is it like this on Windows 10 as well?

And it also doesn't work on windows 7

This made it work on Win 7 for me: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1328904

Oh that's great to see, thank you

It crashes on load with quad cores. And the mouse sensitivity is all fucked up. Had to manually change settings in the .ini file to make it work. And even then random crashes... especially if you alt tab.

Very disappointed that bethesda cant maintain a 6 year old game and yet they have no problem selling it. I would not recommend buying it unless you are comfortable trouble shooting.

Also, as a csgo player the fps portion of the game is super clunky and frustrating. Still, it was a fun piece of gaming history even if the ending is fucking terrible.

This fake windowed mode mod fixed the alt-tabbing for me.

That's because it is really clunky. Like trying to use a broom as a rifle. That and the fact that each mod make the game exponentially more unstable are the reasons I couldn't get into fallout

Step 1: Go back to using Windows 7

Step 2: Enjoy Fallout 3!

^^I ^^Know ^^this ^^doesn't ^^actually ^^help ^^Windows ^^8 ^^users, ^^but ^^I ^^wanted ^^to ^^be ^^a ^^smartass

Instructions unclear, purchased MS-DOS ^^^^^^LOL

I'm not even mad, I'm impressed you actually found someone selling MS-DOS

[Sure did!] (http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-MS-DOS-Operating-System-Floppy/dp/B003HN9ZK8) Wonder if my PC can handle it?

Still the same. Just do this first:

Cd c:

Cd windows

Win

Oh damn i never finished f3 because of constant crashes. Now i just have to wait for my 980ti to actually play (after modding the f out of it)

Bought Fallout 3 and forgot how to Google. Thanks Reddit!

pcmasterrace problems

It's fucking pathetic that such popular games are in such terrible condition that they won't even launch without config modification.

A better fix http://steamcommunity.com/app/22370/discussions/0/864956555011164413/

Well it says right above the add to cart button that it does not support windows 7 and above.

"Warning Fallout 3 is not optimized for Windows 7 and later".....right there on the store page

Fallout 3 + Windows 8.x fix

Step 1) Install Windows 7 (or XP, or several versions of Windows Server) Step 2) That's it.

Too bad after you get it working you find out it sucks.

Maybe you shouldn't buy such shit games. Clearly you need New Vegas in your lives.

or Step 1: Don't make a big deal of a game until it's not a pre-alpha like bethesda games

But it's not pre-alpha, it was released around 2010, so it's not optimized for Windows 8, so this is a fix for that.
