Wait, how did you get these photos?
plot twist u/pepperjohnson is actually OP's Grandpa. He came to the thread to dickride himself about the house.
to dickride himself
thanks for that
Shhhhhhhh
1 Grandfathers can have multiple children, grandchildren, ...
2 The NSA ... hold on, there's someone at the door...
Or it could be this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7x1ETPkZsk
OP had posted them further down.
Yeah seriously? Wtf?
Here is his original post..

/u/pepperjohnson is OP's grandma.
You whipper snapper!
OP posted them a year or so ago.
Yeah... OP said his grandfather only sent him like 4 photos
Edit: nevermind he posted progress images a while ago
OP posted them rotated wrong n had trouble with imgur. Just saving n reuploading

Ah okay, those are the photos everyone said OP posted earlier.
Good question.
OP posted them a long time ago. This thread is an update.
Grandpa looks like Geraldo Rivera
I was thinking Bo Burnham in a grandpa costume
I can't see it at all
That was my first thought when I saw him too!

Thank you!

Why is that so bad? Unless he's an experienced stone cutter and mason, there's no way he'd ever get the walls under 2 ft thick and still be structurally sound. Can it be done? yeah, but it's not easy for the average grandpa. This way, he's got a guaranteed solid wall that still looks damn good. Most houses that have a stone facade use this exact same technique.
Haha yeah, armchair bricklayers over here thinking it's easy to just stack oddly shaped stones and have it stand properly. This is definitely the best way to aesthetically design any exterior walls with stone or brick
wait... seriously, does that guy actually think that rock walls on houses are solid rock?
It's not bad, it's certainly the easiest/best way to do it
It just ruins the illusion :)
Well good thing you don't know about 90% of the buildings you see everyday.
Fake facades everywhere.
honestly more like 99.9%
I'm a generous person
Not Philadelphia's city hall. Phillys city hall is taller than any building in Baltimore.
"The enormous city hall is still the tallest and largest masonry building in the world. Since no steel frame was used, the walls at the first floor are up to 22ft thick to support all the weight from the floors above.
The eight floors, each about 16ft high, look like just three floors from the outside.
The central tower reaches a height of 511ft. It is topped by a statue of William Penn. The massive statue is 37ft high and weighs 27 ton. It is just one of 250 sculptures created by Alexander Calder for both the interior and exterior of the city hall."
The poor bastard does now.
I know, as I said, "it's certainly the easiest/best way to do it".
just ruins the magic of a stone walled castle. but hey structural integrity is cool too
I would be concerned with the lack of water proofing. Brick and stone are porous. During wet weather the inside walls will be wet to touch.
My grandpa (in his 70s at this point) hauled a Leca block down the steep mountainside to the fjord, to use it as a boat anchor. With great pride at his feat, he roped it up and threw it into the water, only to have it float.
So yeah, those blocks are very porous.
Your grandpa is a viking?
Vikings didn't have Leca blocks
I worked as a property manager for a rich lady for six months about 3 years ago. She has walls built the same way, we had to use sealant to water proof them at the beginning of the summer. With walls like that its not uncommon to have to seal them every other year or so in wet climates.
Sealant, eh? I wonder if Grandpa...
The "average grandpa" plays golf on Tuesdays and chases the occasional toddler. Castle-building grandpa is exceptional.
In OPs album he was showing so I included it.
:( suddenly grandpa is spending all the inheritance on stupid instead of greatness
I'm gonna save that for later and show it to my nephew. Thanks for posting this.
I've seen these on reddit before... like months ago. I guess it was still being built then.
We need to get this upvoted where it belongs ASAP.
You my friend are doing the work of God.

Damn. Y'all motherfuckers put stone on the inside too?? Sheiitt
King of Swamp Castle: When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. And that one sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, and then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that’s what you’re going to get, Son, the strongest castle in all of England.
And huge tracts of... land.
You'll have to marry to get those.
but faaaaaaaaaaather I just want to si-
No no no, we'll have none of that now.
But I don't want to, faaather.
It's actually, "And huge…tracts of land"
You've got your ellipses in the wrong spot, you do.
One day, lad, all of this will be yours
The curtains?!
NO NOT THE CURTAINS
The curtains?
One day, this will be your swamp. But for now it's mine. My swamp.
Dear... sweet Concord!
You two stay 'ere and make sure he doesn't leave!
Not to leave the room, even if you come and get 'im.
This is my swamp.
It would have made more since to dig down to bedrock, back-fill with crushed stone and then build your castle ontop of the crushed stone.
Woosh
"The first time I threw mine away, I thought it was an ant trap. But I figured I'd rather live with ants than with his creepy little disc. The second time... I thought it was one of those, you know, those things you turn over and it moos. Like a cow thing. But upon closer examination, it was another ant trap, so I threw it away. And the third time... I did it out of spite."
That's a place I haven't been in a long, long time
This map. You felt like the ghillie suit worked.
Because it did.
Unless you weren't scoped, then you could see them quite clearly at a distance due to bad rendering.
Same on Wasteland
Wasteland was a shitshow.
True, everyone just camped in the center bunker and if you wanted to snipe people knew exactly where you'd be.
Barret .50 + Ghillie suit + camping up behind the little shed behind the house = A satisfying amount of kills and pissing off a lot of angry teens.
My oma noobtube laughs at that strategy.
Add cold-blooded and yes, many many upset teens who apparently fucked my mother..
Intervention for dayssss
the rage. I remember laughing at the kids screaming about this
I would always camp under the window on the ledge during SaD. 90% of the time you would always get a kill if you got there after they noobtubed the windows.
I liked to get drunk and sit in a bush right next to the driveway. The 1/20 times it actually surprised somebody was totally worth the shitty K/D.
Was a teen at the time (I think). Can confirm, many pissed off times were had on this map.
I got my first nuke on this map...it shall hold a special place in my heart.
Few games have been able to capture it since sadly.

People still play multiplayer, whenever I go home for college break i play a few rounds of Dom
Yeah I have it on PC, it's not the same now though. Rather than having a broad spectrum of hundreds-of-thousands of players, you have a much smaller group of players the majority of whom who are either amazingly good or hackers. It doesn't make for a fun game to just hop on once-a-month.
Same, but search and destroy > dom
Demo was the best. It had the most skilled and competitive players. Teamwork was a thing, and it was a mix of search and dom. Plus spawn camping was possible if you were good enough so nukes were fairly easy to get. Goddam one time I got two nukes in the same game of demo on favela. I held my first one and called in my second one... Good times for sure

Modern Warfare 2
Dank meme, brah!
I miss those maps/that game :(
[deleted]
Terminal plane. We used to play kill the terrorists and 3 people went in the plane and defended against 3 people invading the plane. Pretty much we shot the fuck out of the whole body of the plane because it was penetrable and narrow as fuck.
[deleted]
I would use that same combo to shoot down the long hallway from the stairs at the end in Skidrow. Always got tons of kills.
Best part was the hiding spot during the many games of Michael Meyers on that map.
Haha, we would do that in the container (shipment) level all the time. It would always fall apart into a machine gun bloodbath.
Cod4 shipment?
THAT container level?
Shipment with shotguns. Hard to beat.
Martyrdom and 3 frags everywhere.
Ah fuck me my eyes are wet now. I miss that map.
knives only, hardcore, sensitivity 10 on the 360 with splitscreen 4 ways was amazingly fun
I did that on black ops and it would make the game lag real nice and freeze it. It was tomahawks search and destroy with 4 people playing. I also remember lagging out/ not being able to connect to a split screen session because the servers weren't available.
/u/no1dead, like how you hacked into your school computer system and almost got expelled?
Okay so this is how it's going to be? Are you just going to follow my ass around. If your end game is going to be me deleting my account well good luck with that.
I don't want you to close your account. That would mean I lose the ability to post the same message again and again. :)
How dare he forget that beautiful maps name!
Yeah, loved that shit
One person would fire their pistol... then we just went up the weapon size person by person.
Usually somebody would get cute and toss a hot grenade that exploded instantly then there were 20 grenades coming down all over the place in that tiny ass level
It was the only CoD game I felt you could use any weapon and do well. It was also one of the only games where you couldn't be back attacked from 5 different directions everywhere you went.
You hit the nail on the head, tired of terrible spawns in the new games and so much clutter and bad depth you can't tell if you're seeing people or the map.
Every weapon was actually useful too and had balanced stats. Except the Thumper.
You know, usually nobody agrees with me on that. My friend and I have tried every CoD and both are saying the same thing. Haven't enjoyed one since MW2.
Running around with just a tactical knife was viable, sniping, SMG, LMG, Assault Rifles, all viable. In the newer ones it feels like sniping is dead and SMGs are the only way to go.
I totally agree, there are not enough open areas with good hiding spots and too many maze-like buildings where you constantly need to have a quick weapons.
Ahh, the good old days...
Knives only was fun!
YES to everything in this post. People still play this game online, I play everytime I go back home from uni. BEST maps hands down
Yup, knives, smokes and flashbangs only 28 players at a lan. It was horrific.
I preferred the intervention and slight of hand personally
Which game is this?
you were very deprived :( call of duty modern warfare 2

Outgrew gaming? What are you, 90?

lol i don't think anyone is gonna be butthurt they didn't play as many videogames as an random internet person
I don't think we were...
Honestly CoD:MW and MW2 were not bad games, it's after MW2 that it really went down hill fast.
MW2 multiplayer on PC was super shitty. The removal of dedicated servers AND the decision to use VAC without any server admin functionality destroyed the game -- it was a lagfest with knife teleportation and rampant hacking. (VAC is a delayed ban system. Without server admins, hackers have free rein for weeks before VAC bans them, if VAC bans them.)
Ah, back then I mainly played it on 360 where for the most part it was fine. There were some children with hacked set ups(I.E. my younger brother) but for the most part it was a fair. It was probably my last 360 game before I built my desktop.
cod: modern warfare 2
The last great CoD, Modern Warfare 2.
Best maps
mp_harbor would like a word with you.
It had Favela and Highrise man...
There was nothing like getting to the snipers nests on either side of Highrise and raining death, or jumping roof to roof on Favela then dropping down into a firefight.
MW2 maps were my favorite. Better?
Seriously, the last good COD game that was made really.
It is so weird, I hated that game shortly after it came out, but I'm getting really nostalgic about it now. That being said Black Ops. Was superior in my opinion, and I know nothing about any of the games following that.
[deleted]
Only two types? I only liked this one, which type am I?
That was by infinity ward. You are in the infinity ward camp. Meetings are 3rd thursday every month with a full moon. Don't forget your sleeping bag.
That was made by Infinity Ward.
I switched allegiances after IW was gutted.
Black ops was my favorite. Both on the ps3 and Wii.
Then play it! At least on the 360 there are still tons of lobbies.
Yep. Only games I still play on my consoles are BO2 and madden. Bo2 lobbies are still pretty populated. Rarely wait for a match to start.
If u wanna beat the same team 8+ different times...
I thought there was a bunch of modders?
I loved playing gun game in black ops
i played it only 2 weeks (SP: Campain done; MP: played till i have received lvl 50...) long and never then since. I mostly disliked the maps by a lot in the multiplayer. Oh, do i have to mention i had a 3 year break of CoD before... i knew this game would be not so great, but i missed the old MW1, MW2, CoD2-action
I know it's because WAW and BO were set in the past but still Treyarch's guns felt like pee shooters and it just wasn't as satisfying as shooting the guns from MW 1&2 especially the AK-47 and G36C
Oh make no mistake that people were complaining how noob friendly MW2 was back then compared to the original but it was still better than it is now.
Oh I'm a total noob, that was part of why I stopped playing CoD. I just couldn't keep up while playing inconsistently and it wasn't fun getting my ass absolutely handed to me. That is why I am fond of Titanfall where you can be bad, but still feel like you are contributing in some way, and I think that was something the original IW was good at.
I thought COD2 was the last good COD game other than Black Ops. Hell I still play COD1, the original one, there's usually 50 players on concurrently.
I know Blops had some issues on the consoles, but it did most things right for the PC. Dedicated Servers, no weird inaccuracy when scoping in with the sniper and all that.
You're circle jerking a bit here. Black.ops 1 was an amazing cod, did a lot for the series and recently advanced warfare has been far better than recent years.
I don't play multiplayer and hadn't played a COD game since MW:2 but I bought Advanced Warfare this year and thought it was really good.
That's nostalgia, because that game was absolute shit (in my opinion). One man army noob tubes? Easily hacked lobbies? You couldn't find a lobby where at least one person wasn't doing something that shouldn't have been in the game.
Also deathstreaks? You suck, here end someone else's streak.
Sorry, I'm sure you liked it and I know many others did, but I can't stand the game for that and many more reasons. The maps were okay though (don't get me started on the spawns though).
I agree, there were some stupid features in the game, especially when it first launched (akimbo 1887 sniper rifles lol), but patches fixed most of the problems. As a player of all the previous Call of Duty games, including all the WWII ones, it was still a great game. All the games that came after MW2 just weren't as good. I gave the series up after Black Ops. I haven't even touched the most recent ones.
I thought Black Ops was pretty good. don't know about the stuff after that though. MW2 and BO are the only COD games i've played.
Black Ops 1 was the last good COD game. MW3 was ass and Black Ops 2 was better than MW3. Then Ghost and AW arent very good.
Black Ops was just OK, once Infinity Ward stopped developing the games, the series just lost its magic. Which was really sad for me because I had been playing since the very first WWII COD back in 2003. I haven't even played any of the games past Black Ops.
Black Ops was also really good and MW3 was alright too. BO2 and on wasn't too good though.
Black ops 1-2 are both great games.
Did they eradicate all the old copies of it?
AC130 ABOVE

Back when COD was fun.
QUICK, PLACE 15 CLAYMORES IN THE DOORS SO NO JUGGERNAUTS GET IN
Oh, that's from when I actually enjoyed the COD games. :'(
I've been Playing a lot since 4 and black ops series was always fun. I really liked aw but buggy and needed work. Unfortunately I haven't played in awhile due to personal issues and work. But it had a lot of potential. I liked that they tried new things with it. I was upset that zombies wasn't included iirc. So you have to buy the map packs to have zombies. For me, it's worth it because me and my son will put in work on some zombies!
I always thought the MW 1 and 2 games were good because they didn't have that zombie shit.
My god you read my mind.
OPS GRANDPA MAKAROV CONFIRMED
Where have the years gone? I miss the stress free days of middle school when I had nothing better to do than play this game
The game came out 5 years ago. If you were in middle school then, then you should still be experiencing "care free" days.
Actually that could put him/her in their first year of college which can be stressful
Yup.
Ha. Laughable.
it's more about the realization that life is short and there are better things to be doing
This person would then most likely be applying to college or in their first year there (or currently working to support themselves, or all of the above)
Not exactly care free.
Perspective, my friend. I'm not downplaying any of that. Just realize that today's college freshman will, in time, be yearning for those "care free" days of college.
Not if you consider 8th grade as middle school. I was in 8th grade in middle school five years ago. Now I'm a college freshman with a hefty workload.
I guess it's all perspective. I was a college freshman 14 years ago. Nowadays, I'm holding down a career, married with 2 kids, and slave to a mortgage. I'd love to be an 18 year old college freshman again. Forget the school work. My only worries would be how and where to get the girls, ganja, and beer. :)
haha I guess it's all about perspective! I'm sure in due time I'll be looking back at this year like the world was my oyster.
This guy has no idea what's comin'
honestly...my college workload and stress was way higher than my career load is. I had to study basically every night, and just always had bullshit looming over my head, but a lot less comes home with me now, which is great. Believe me when I say my job is not easy either
Exact situation as me. this feels like way more than 5 years ago.
The fuck else is considered middle school?
How. How is it that every other life event that i think happened a few years ago is actually closer to a decade, but this seems like a long long time ago? Like I was still playing games on my Xbox 360 when COD:MW2 came out, except for wow my entire PC gaming life has occurred in the past 5 years. Its only been 5 years?
You just expressed my emotions perfectly.
Middle school...fuck me I'm old
I hear ya. My kids were in middle school when it came out.
I was playing this junior year of high school and I feel old.
If thats the only comment you're capable of making just post on circlejerk.
Right?
You young motherfucker. I was playing that game while I was finishing college and slaving away at blockbuster.
I could say the same thing, and you're probably the age I was when this game came out lol.

College. Engineering. Not stress free
Nope, I saw [this] (http://portforward.com/games/walkthroughs/Assassins-Creed-II/Assassins-Creed-II-large-2344.jpg). And then imagined OP doing [this] (http://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/original/12/125705/2059041-9069620111114_095043_3_big.jpg).
back when it was fun to rage in call of duty.
Oddly enough, I knew exactly what game and location you were talking about before I even clicked the link.. Idk how. It just kinda popped into my brain.. And also blew it apart all at the same time...
What a game. Shame I had to sell it because my aggression was pissing off my wife.
What cod game is that
Modern Warfare 2
[deleted]
It's oblivion.
Can confirm. I closed a gate down the hill from this house last night.
[deleted]
It's actually Call of Duty
I think it's also in one of the CODs
Call of Duty.
[deleted]
No, it's Call of Duty.
No, this is Patrick.
I once, on PC, played a round of that multiplayer whilst exercising whimsy.... so estate, with long sight lines and all that entails...
I took a SPAS-12 and a riot shield. I got a nuke.
That was an.... unexpected result. O_o
That was my first thought!
AC130 ABOVEE!!
First thing I thought of
Feels weird all of these Jonnes having nostalgia over MW2.
Holy shit the nostalgia, was the only Cod I've ever played but i played a lot
when cod games were fun and I had no worries in the world
Ghost...NOOOOO
EDIT: If you don't remember, that's where Ghost and Roach get betrayed / Killed....
Wow I thought this got deleted from my mental hard drive.
Too bad the game is now overwhelmed by hackers.
Fuck, this is exactly what I saw, I literally commented so 3 seconds before I saw this
Right in the feels.
I remember when I was in college playing this game daily that I vowed to remake this Estate when I was older and had the proper funds. Such an awesome map.
Damn, I miss that game
Oooooooo nostalgia
Right in the nostalgia
Nostalgia
Maps used to be so good.
man that map was trash the inside the house was fun but it was pretty bad overall
Wait didn't you post this before? Without all the wood? Because i remember a post like this years ago i think! If this is an update from what i remember that is one amazing job!
You do remember a post like this. I posted this a year ago while he was still building it and it got to the front page, so I figured you guys wouldn't mind the update now that it's finished! A dude higher up in the comments dug up my old post if you wanna see it.
Thank you for updating us. Your grandfather did a wonderful job, he could easily rent that place out for wedding receptions and/or other parties.
Fuck that, OP's grandpa has dancing to do!
Thank god, I was considering posting to /r/glitch_in_the_matrix..
Awesome Dancastle. :)
For those interested, here's another impressive handmade castle: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fb/Bishop_Castle_Fairview_CO.jpg
Bishop Castle in Colorado...incredibly sketchy building, and the guy who built it is a nut job.
I was there back in 1995. The guy working on it is indeed a total whackjob, but my god - the castle itself is a monument to what "crazy" can accomplish with an unlimited supply of materials and free time. The place is both bizarre and impressive on multiple levels.
TL;DR: Basically Minecraft in real life.
How does a crazy person like this gain access to unlimited materials, supplies, the land, and daily sustenance?
For materials he literally goes to the side of the road to grab rocks and basic materials. There is toooons of land that is not used in Colorado and he's way out in the sticks.
He also pulls alot of visitors in the summer, there's a general store and people always donate little bits of cash.
Its a very interesting place, and I think visiting it should be on everyone's bucket list.
Probably inheritance or trust fund or something.
Inherit North Korea?
Same way crazy ole Howard Hughes did it, inheritance.
He's exactly the right kind of crazy, apparently.
Probably meth. And already had the land. Maybe aliens.
I'm ok with heights, as long as they're "OSHA approved" heights.
I went up the wrought iron turret at the top, could not stop sweating and shaking. Fucking terrifying.
I couldn't even walk on the wrought iron walkways towards the bottom; could feel them flexing under me, and I could see the patch work.
But agreed, extremely impressive how far he's gotten. Don't totally understand how he managed by himself. One of the store attendants told me that he only JUST started using a tie-in harness in 2014....
Don't totally understand how he managed by himself.
There's an old saying that seems to be apt when describing that place:
Ignorance knows no bounds.
I get the impression that the guy isn't exactly educated or trained as an engineer, so there's not much holding him back. If stuff stays up under it's own weight, and can support the architect plus a PVC bucket full of rocks and cement, it's good to go.
[deleted]
"Fewer" critics.
Look at him, giving critic
"criticism"
woosh
*whoosh
whooshception
i would say less tax takers and fewer neighbors... however thats a statement as a truly middle class person in the 20teens
This isn't helping.
That motto is great if it means creative solutions for functionality which was left out during planning -- not so much for safety.
A custom made door for a not-completely-straight wall, or an slightly illogical floor plan because it grew organically... that gives charm to a building. But it's not so charming if stuff starts to bend, crack, rot or break down.
Yeah, fuck safety regulations, said no one ever
I say it.
I second it!
Yea but all safety and no recklessness makes for a pretty boring world my friend.
Pretty boring with all those enormous skyscrapers and beautiful cathedrals all built within regulations.
Right, but we're talking about building a free-standing structure here. I'm not saying "no recklessness ever" but how about a little safety where it counts?
Its still standing and nobody has got hurt. I think your giving the man less credit than he deserves.
Still standing. I wouldn't be surprised if it falls over him someday.
Well he obviously knows what he is doing somewhat, I mean look at those supports! They look about 5 feet thick, and cement is actually quite strong. You also don't build what looks like a 40 foot turret without knowing a little something about engineering. He might be crazy but he is also really smart.
Oh, come on. The guy who built that isn't crazy by any stretch of the imagination. He's eccentric and ambitious and maybe strange but that's it. Crazy people don't build castles from raw materials; crazy people hack people up with machetes and climb towers with a rifle.
You're confusing everyone by calling him 'crazy.' And I'd have no reservations in using that word were it accurate. It's not. It's like your vocabulary was too limited to actually describe him in a word that fit him properly.
I'd disagree. My girlfriend is what 99 percent would probably consider crazy. She has borderline personality disorder. If you have never met someone with this, read up on it. Its terrible how their brains work. She tells me I'm crazy too, because we are still together and most people with bpd can't maintain a serious relationship.
They can learn to control it. Slowly, over the years. It can be incredibly taxing on those close to them though, so you're probably either a bit crazy yourself or just a really good person ;)
Probably a little of both lol. Although it's not really that big of a deal for me. I'm so good at not having emotions or listening to stuff because of how my mom was that I can usually just ignore her when needed which she says is probably for the best. She has time to cool off. I also do have the ability to snap though and she says when I do that she knows she's in the wrong. Not atm, but later. She's gotten better for sure though. She can actually tell now when she's done something wrong even if it's hours or days later.
She's gotten better for sure though. She can actually tell now when she's done something wrong even if it's hours or days later.
That's where it starts. Slowly the moment of realization gets closer to the moment of feeling it/doing it, and control becomes more possible.
Good luck to the two of you :P
More like Medieval Engineers. Look it up; it's awesome.

I'm finding this to be very interesting and would love to know more. I'm definitely into more of the stories you're willing to share!
I'd be interested in hearing about it.
We're sitting comfortably, please begin....
Haha.
This, on Wikipedia. "In 1996, he was challenged by the local and state government over unsanctioned road signs that pointed to the site. They settled the dispute by issuing official road signs."
That guy knew how to get his shit done.
Story time!
I'm also interested in more stories about Jim bishop.
I'm just going to pitch up ma tent right here and await story time.
Oh please do this is all awesome. People like this are always great fodder for stories.
Yes please
I was wondering how far I'd have to scroll before someone posted about Bishop's. Not far which is awesome!
I was shooting a short film in Florence in 2010 and we had a day off so half the crew decided to go check it out since it wasn't far from there. We were certainly not disappointed and the crazy guy was out in full force yelling about how the government tried telling him that he can't dig rocks out of the ground to use on his castle. His response - "Fuck you govment, my land, my rocks, my god damn castle!"
He's pretty much my hero.
lol the fucked part is that they actually do say that
There's also Guédelon Castle in France being built as an experimental archeology project. You can watch a documentary about how they do it here, all traditional 13th century style.
Thanks. I've watched two episodes so far and am rather enjoying it.
Oh God, I didn't even realize it was episodic. I'm 3/4 through the first one. Guess there goes my Thursday.
There's 5 episodes in total as far as I know.
These are really cool. It's so refreshing seeing a documentary/reality show with out all the ridiculous fluff and scripting that you find on Discovery or History, and the subject matter is truly fascinating. Thanks for posting.
I wonder if in 2717, people will make skyscrapers using our "primitive" tools
I went there in about '07. The guy was a total anarchist. But the way he went about building it was incredible. Amazing piece of architecture.
[deleted]
Aww :(. He is a little strange but the guy has a good heart. Hopefully his family will eventually finish the castle.
Yeah. After reading this thread, I watched a few YouTube videos on him and his castle. Most of them are videos of him ranting and acting like a nut in front of tourists. However I seen a few from the tourists perspective (the ones who have no clue who he is or what he's about) and he seemed like a genuinely friendly guy in those. He talks to the kids, answers all of their questions and just seemed pretty laid back. I'm guessing the guy just has random outbursts. He may be a bit crazy but he means well it seems.
Visited this in 2004. It was great! I thought it was very cool. But now I feel like I missed part of the experience, the crazy man must have been sleeping. There was no yelling about govt. conspiracies... just an amazingly beautiful Colorado day.
Aren't all castles handmade?
Found a video about it. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDQsy7aiVD0
Is the architect a relative of Gaudi?
That's it. If I ever win the lottery I'm building a castle to live in. It's badass.
Kind of reminds me of the character Denny from Chuch Palahniuk's novel Choke. He inherits a piece of land and starts building a home, 1 pebble at a time. At the start of the novel, he's described as overweight and lazy. By the end, he's cut like stone from lugging around hundred pound stones and his house is practically a castle. At least, that's how I remember it. Haven't read it in over a decade though.
[deleted]
Is this the one? Lake Brownwood Castle
Appears to be in Odessa.
I couldn't build this in Minecraft in 5 years. Hats off to your gramps.
I subscribe to /r/minecraft and when I saw this on my feed I thought "Took him five years to build a castle? Really?" and clicked on it and thought "Wow, that's an awesome texture pack" and then saw the sub OP posted in and thought "oh."
I think you need help.
I don't believe you
Eh, thoughts happen fast.
No they
Don't
i subscribe to minecraft too but i don't automatically assume that every post is from there.
Admittedly they were less kind to me when I said the same thing in "Rashida Jones responds to reporter question."
"oh."
pel.
He did it in hardcore survival mode too.
I couldn't build this
in Minecraft in 5 years.
Hats off to your gramps.
That there is some fine masonry work. Did he source the stone locally? How did he calculate the amount of stone he needed? And how is the house heated? Love it.
He dug up all the stones with the help of my grandma on their land. As for calculations... No clue. He's a retired mathematician. Also I've got no clue about the heating.
He dug up all of the stones to build his castle.
Truly a manly man.
He makes Ron Swanson look like my mom in comparison.
So he makes Ron Swanson look masculine and used in comparison, i don't follow?
Full of meat. His mother is full of meat.
Nice!
Honestly, I don't think Ron would be mad at you for saying so.
Have you seen his mom?
Your moms tough though
He dug up all the stones to build his castle after he built two cabins on the property just down the hill. And he builds instruments. Manliest man I have ever met.
What about grandma? Is she a manly gran or a womanly woman? Or is it such an exclusively manly task in your mind that you simply cut poor ol' granny out of the thought completely?
No need to accuse him when it's just a harmless little jest.
"Lazy, good for nothing, do-nothing sons of bitches grand children! Didn't even lift a finger to help gramps build his fantasy castle and now they want to cash all my hard work in for karma and some attention. Fuck you, grandkids!"
-your grandfather
Where did he dig up all the cinderblocks? I can never find those when I'm plowing around for building materials.
Nonono. He dug up all the stones. He bought the cinderblocks like a normal person.
Add some tapestries for correct period insulation.
Guess he just kept bringing wheelbarrows of them over until it was done.
If Finished=No, Then
Wheelbarrows_of_stones_needed=+1
Else
Digging=Stop
Beer=+1
[deleted]
double yourLimit; // TODO: Weigh user.
void drink(){
if(bac >= 0.05 && time <= 1700 || bac >= yourLimit) return;
beer++;
}
void dig(){ // Not important. Finish later.
}
while(!finished){
dig();
drink();
}
Shouldn't you have defined beer, bac and time first?
(Yes, I know it's just a joke. I'm learning Java, and am quite the sucky beginner, so I ask this in order to aid my own understanding and not to be an arse.)
Yup, all of those are undefined, and would result in compile time errors. Also dont forget the finished bool.
Also this is perfectly fine c# code as well, but the brackets/comment style would indicate it is written with java in mind.
^^^^^harrrrrssshhhhh
You get to stop digging. I'm not completely heartless.
Also, I'm an electrician, so I think my formatting is fine.
Yeah, that's where it stopped being plausible. Everyone knows beer is what fuels a project like this.
The beer seems to be separate from the else clause... Just a case of missing indents. You drink beer EVERY wheelbarrow!
+=* ?
I know nothing about computer programming, just curious, what language would this be?
It's almost valid C or Java, but not quite. Also a C programmer would never leave the double uninitialized, even with a TODO ;-).
[deleted]
That code gave me cancer.

Fixed, the integrity of the Internet has been restored
Looks nice OP. i know it was your grandpa but 5 years? I know some Ecuadorians who can do that kind of stone work on their lunch break....
(Before the downvotes pour in, im joking... They don't get lunch breaks)
[deleted]
On a website of literally millions there may just be a few people with architecture and engineering experience, we're not just redditors.
But yes, super dope castle! Disregard the critiques, acquire shillings.
IT here... how did he run the ethernet cables?! You cant live without internet dammit
dope, you mean like a drug?
Yes, in this context I mean exactly like the drug.
BRB, going to go bang that shit!
Well some of us on here are...
Not me. I'm a dog. But on the internet no one knows that.
I'm floating aimlessly through space, just like... Everything and everyone :(
I want to believe this.
Sit, boy!
Are you Cajun?
not genetically, but I was born and raised in Louisiana.
I can't even build a sandwich that doesn't fall apart. I am ashamed of myself and my lack of manliness.
Just you wait and practice. One day, you will master the grilled cheese and be able to grill cheese on both sides of the sandwich, making a triple layer grilled cheese of man.
And this sandwich will be unassailable with interlocking fields of fire and glacis on all sides.
3 slices of bread, butter, add cheese between the 3 slices (filling both sides), stick in a toaster bag, pop in the toaster, let cheese melt a little to stick, out the toaster, into a frying pan with a little oil to finish. The real challenge... 4 slices of bread! There isn't a toaster big enough.
I hear if you just turn your toaster sideways...
Insert picture of Homer when his breakfast cereal catches fire...
Thank you. :-)
10/10 Would sack.
I imagine that tower would work well for catapulting farm animals and farting in your general direction, though.
It's only a model.
Ssshh!!
The castle needs to be at least... three times bigger than this
What is this a castle for ants?
Shh!
Seems.. small. How many bedrooms? Two?
0 bedrooms. 1 bathroom. 1 kitchen. This isn't for living. It's for dancing in. He already has a house he built about a 1/2 mile away. He just likes to keep busy, so he built it.
It's for dancing in
No one is asking the important question, so I will. How much fucking dancing does your grandpa do, and why is it so important to him that he requires an entire castle for it?
Hahaha my grandpa and grandma are the head of some type of square-dancing community in AR. They really love themselves a dance.
ha, wicked dance castle. Seriously jealous.
Something about square dancing in a castle... Its just so funny to think of all the history and whatnot that has brought us to this point.
So, your grandpa is building castles and heading dancing communities while the biggest accomplishment for most of us today will be reading about him? Damnit, OP.
Somewhere in Northwest Arkansas I'm guessing?
Keep it funky, Fayetteville
You should see about getting some pictures of his house if possible. I bet it's pretty neat! Also, tell your grandpa to become a redditor and post on /r/DIY or something. Or just tell him to take a bunch of process pics for us!
Also tell him millions of strangers love it! Thanks for sharing.
Square dancing or Scottish country dancing? Scottish country dancing seems like it would go better in a castle. Especially with the tartan table cloths
Hell of a hobby, house building.
It starts innocently enough with treeforts, and before you know it they're starting office park designs or god forbid planning skyscrapers.
Treeforts are a gateway drug !
That makes sense then.. I thought maybe upstairs there was a living space. Totally cool tower and clearly a good place for.parties..
I like how you said this makes sense. Like a shit load of people build castles for the sole purpose of housing their dance moves.
More like it makes sense there are no bedrooms cause I wasn't seeing it!
housing their dance moves.
Made me laugh.
Nah it's just a high ceiling. It's one story (not including the tower, of course)
Pictures of house required
Well, I need a dance hall castle too if he gets bored haha
Is your grandpa in the market for another grandson?
Because I may know a guy...
| â™± â™± â™± â™± â™± â™± â™± â™± - - | 8/10
A commendable effort. Though an excellent folly, the absence of a moat as well as wooden gross structure renders it lacking in defensibility.
On behalf of all redditors, I would like to thank you for your 2 years of hard work and dedication. Rate on my friend
There's also the fact that it's not really a castle. More of a keep, I suppose. Whatever it is it's awesome.
Does the castle doctrine have a bonus when being applied to an actual castle?
portcullis. I think you meant portcullis.
i predict people asking for proof as this thread grows. progress pics would be awesome.
that having been said, this is a cool regardless.
Okay I was able to copy and paste the url from my album but not the post. Here are progress pics. Some are sideways, though. Sorry. http://m.imgur.com/a/BR2ib
amazing.
Thanks so much for sharing...your grandfather looks so young... good lookin fella
His castle is awesome too
I don't know how to link a previous post into a now post, but about a year ago I had a front page post while my gramps was still building it. If you care enough for proof or progress pics, just go to my post history from like a year ago.
Your story checks out
http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/1rrc79/my_grandpa_is_a_retired_mathematician_he_got/
OP, I was going to call you a liar. I remembered seeing this last year and thought you stole it.
If you weren't the OP, certainly you would have been called on it. It was a wildly popular post and I believe held the top spot on my newsfeed.
Congrats for having done that again and kudos to your grandfather!
That's an amazing creation.
Edit: a
Your grandfather built that house with two bare hands? Just don't lose to Shooter McGavin.
There's still time for gramps to go batshit and start adding on like this guy down in my neck of the woods.
I'm jealous. I would love to build a house of my own. Even if it's 1bd/1 bath
0 bedroom house Im afraid. Just a kitchen and a bathroom. It's for dancing in.
Still an amazing feat! Did you partake in the building?
I helped him for like 3 days while I was visiting so honestly not really, but at least i got to help out a tiiiiny bit.
Being both a grandpa and something of a craftsman, I stand in awe. Five years is quick for an exquisite project like that.
There should be a list of all reddit users who are officially recognized (with proper sanctions and accreditation of course) as "grandpa's".
Or maybe a sub that exists where the mod's are all Grandpa's and just dole out advice like it's bank envelopes of $10 bills at Christmas time.
Something about being a Grandpa who is on Reddit just makes me think that you'd be a man the rest of us should listen to.
Beautiful. Come back and show us how it looks when all the greenery grows in come summertime. It needs ivy on the walls and vines on the terrace. Tell Gramps I'm proud of him.
He built that by hand and it only took him 5 years? Why are we not applauding the fact that Grandpa over there knocked out a 10/10 house in less time than it would take city construction crews to make a 2/10 box-home?
You are right. It is missing something. I'm gonna convince him to get one. I have to.
One of the cringiest videos I've ever seen, on that homepage. God, the way they tried lining the audio up to the video with the shots...
I was hoping you had shopped in Toothless :(
Its 'Murica after all
$400 for that shit? WTF?
Well, it does have to be strong enough to withstand a black powder explosion.
Why?
It's a golf ball cannon that uses black powder. How did you go to the website and not realize what it is? The biggest words on the website are "BLACK POWDER GOLDBALL LUNCHERS". There's even a video of it. It's essentially a gun that shoots golf balls.
http://www.americancannons.com/index.html
You're not too bright are you?
Explain what I'm missing here then.
Incredible. Shame there's no moat though.
I didnt skip any of my classes today. Feel pretty good about that.
Congrats, man. A present from me to you.
I feel silly for asking this...but was he featured on a TV show (maybe a prepper show) this castle looks really familar to one I've seen on TV, the man who built it was training his family to defend the castle, doing drills etc. Really looks similar but I guess alot of rocks and stones do.
Nope.
Also thought this, the show's name was Doomsday Preppers, but turns out it was another castle. http://www.livescience.com/38808-doomsday-castle-family-interview.html
I thought the same exact thing when I saw this too.
Glad to hear someone else is in the same boat! This man was a big Jewish guy (only using for reference. I'm a stupid Irish drunk, don't think I'm racist but I might be nationalist given enough drink! Hahaha) ANYWAYS big Jewish guy, training his family with guns and how to defend the castle from certain points etc. Guy was smart but his family wouldn't last
AMA Request: The Grandfather of OP who built a castle by hand.
I could try to talk him into that, but probably wouldn't be able to for a while, and yall will forget about this by then.
It would run rampant. I encourage you to do so! Tell him the internet is willing and able!
How did he handle rain and snow on portions of the house that didn't have a roof as the house was being built.
This reminds me of a scaled down version of the St Hubertus Hunting Lodge in The Netherlands. The lodge was the home of the Kroller-Muller clan and the tower was used to spy game on the surrounding property.
http://architectuul.com/architecture/st-hubertus-hunting-lodge
If I had an awesome castle like that, I would do so much cool medieval shit like watch my whole family die from plague.
For those interested there's a really freaky handbuilt castle in Belgium - in the French speaking part.
I have been there. It's a unique experience that I have never found again in my life. Unbelievable story and unbelievable content / creator.
http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/tower-eben-ezer
The Tower of Eben-Ezer is a self-built castle constructed in the 1960s by a single man in the isolated Jeker valley of Belgium. The builder, Robert Garcet, was fascinated with the Bible, numerology and ancient civilizations. The entire seven-level tower is built of flint, and according to Garcet, was designed using ancient mystical measurements. On the top of the tower are four giant biblical animals, and the interior is full of Garcet's biblical, archaeological, paleontological and geological art.
was this in FLA? was her on american preppers?
Has he started digging the trench yet? I know a great business that helped me dig mine: Tiffany's Trenches. I also know a killer place to get crocodiles.
Hey, I've been here before! I'm really glad to see he's finally finished with the project. So I have to ask, do you know what he's planning next? Also, I still think about contacting him from time to time to commission a lap dulcimer. He builds some of the best I have ever played.
Sweet
...I want there to be a DIY to this?
I seriously came to this thread looking for castle-building tips. I'm kind of disappointed.
So Castle Black, Eastwatch, The Shadow Tower, and now your grandpa's castle are the only outposts that are manned along The Wall.
It's not nearly enough to repulse the force that is coming down onto it from the North.
Did he get proper zoning? My grandpa knew a guy who built one only to find out it was illegal to reside in.
He did.
By chance is this in Grosse Ile?
That is truly awesome - Tell your Grandfather I must hire him!
Want want want want want want want
Very cool!
woah dude
Please tell me he has a catapult or ballista around there somewhere?
This reminds me of Ha Ha Tonka State Park in Missouri. This dude started building a castle in early 20th century and eventually his children finished it. It burned down a long time ago but it's a beautiful state park now.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ha_Ha_Tonka_State_Park
Palahniuk wrote a great piece on American castle builders in Stranger Than Fiction: Short Stories... Definitely worth the read
Any idiot can build a house. Your grandpa built a castle because he's a boss.
Better by hand than by face I always say
Holy crap! Imagine having to haul all that material and piece it together. Props to your grandpa
I always tell people my dream house is a ston castle like cabin hybrid and this is really close to what I'm going for.
I want to go to there
Is he Captain Yamato.
How much did it cost to build?
If i've learned anything from minecraft, it's that your grandpa is not finished, he'll never be finished.
Good for him I say, a man needs a hobby, especially in old age to keep his spirit up and feel like he has a purpose.
WOW.
Your grandfather's a fucking boss. Give him a high five from me.
Hnng I love the flared roof on the tower!
This looks like it's in the Ozarks. Where is it?
What the fuck.
Here is a castle built by hand.http://www.bishopcastle.org/
That poor Catholic priest has been building his damn trash cathedral for 40 years, and your gramps finishes this in 5. Sad day for the priest.
Are girls allowed inside of Fort Kickass?
Here I am eating Doritos at 1:18 am with dead dreams while your family achieves.
Excellent. A very cool place. Good on him and you for your obvious admiration of the man.
That's so fucking dope
Pretty impressive build there, I have to say. 5 years? That's not bad if he was doing it all himself, especially if the interior is finished nice. More pics!!! :D
Reminds me of COD Modern Warfare 2
What? No moat??? Everyone knows, any castle worth its stones must have a moat...with crocodiles.
Lol, I like you.
de_grandpa
Did he need building permits?
No moat -11/10
He spent more time building this castle than I have ever been in a relationship
Did he suddenly change his mind and decide to switch up from a contemporary architectural style to just plain-bad ass medieval Japanese war spirals reaching towards the heaven or was it a more steady decay into madness?
Tell your grandpa he's my role model and pretty cool and stuff and that he has the right kind of idea.
I'm late to the party but building your own house is so rewarding. My parents built an addition onto their house and normally you would pay a few hundreds of thousands of dollars just to add onto your house (if you have extra land for it) due to costs of hiring out and yet my parents did it with a fraction of the cost by doing it by hand. It took nearly 2 years but when I look at it now compared to how I saw it when my parents first said they were going to try, they did so much I'm actually happy they finished it. It was definitely worth the extra labor and hardship to put in the effort.
I can't imagine the joy that your grandfather must feel to have finished this amazing house by hand. By posting this, you are definitely doing a great service to his work.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars for an addition? Were they adding on a mansion?
They live in Hawaii, so that played a big part of it. I apologize, I was also only 17 when they told us we were going to do it so I have no idea of what the actual cost was. All I know is they did it by hand (buying all the materials and putting it together with the help of electricians we knew and whatnot).
Congrats to ur Grandpa- my idea of a dream home
Wow!
What the hell, grandma? You were supposed to dig the moat!
Damn, I would think he must have used some tools. How did he cut the wood so evenly with his hands?
I'd love to see the interior of this place. It looks magnificent from the outside. Any way we could get either some interior photos, or if that's too invasive to your grandparents' privacy, perhaps just a sketch of the layout?
Needs a moat.

http://imgur.com/a/BR2ib
here are more pictures of this castle
Trogdor is going to fuck that place up.
Why didn't you help him?
This is amazing!
Sweet!
What sort of floor plan does it have, OP?
amazing ...
Can he build me a castle too!
Was this on the show "Preppers"?
Post this to /r/preppers/ if you haven't already!
Dont you affraid of russians ?
This is beautiful. Here's hoping someone idiot doesn't see this and freak out about building code violations or something. Always seems to happen in these cases.
You realize before he built it he had to submit a plan to the city he's part of before they issue him a permit. Meaning his plan was approved, and assumed to be built to code. The only reason people freak out about building code violations is when people don't build shit up to code.
Hopefully you're right. I'm not trying to be a downer. Just had lots of bad crap on my plate lately so I get worried a lot now.
This looks like a place I saw on "doomsday preppers".
It's a guilty pleasure don't laugh.
doomsday preppers guy?
Is it weird that I have had dreams about this place before? I find it weird.
Is he from that show Doomsday Preppers? I remember some guy building a castle like structure.
Here's a sweet castle that I've seen in person
https://sites.google.com/site/rozniklandcastle/
This guy built it himself (or at least managed the construction closely, I think he was old). He died shortly after completion - or maybe before it was entirely done. I believe his widow still lives there. You can see the castle from over a mile away on one side. It's big and on a hill
i would love to build a castle
OP's grandfather must be King Solomon! What a gorgeous home...brah-vo!
Nice!
...that's not a castle. That's a house with a tower on the side.
More inside pictures, please :-) Looks awesome!
I want to see inside!!!
Is this that castle from the show doomsday preppers?
Beautiful! Great work by him.
Couples of questions:
Not bad really, considering he carved it all by hand, out of one piece of wood
People are building homes with their hands and here I'm just struggling with a pizza roll packet.
Does he need a princess to complete his project?
-1 doesn't even have a moat for any good defensive structures.
Well, he did a great job.
He should be proud that's a beautiful house.
I built my castle by leg, so ha!
I don't believe you
Meanwhile Millenials are struggling to find jobs that pay decent wages at the very least, let alone jobs that pay commensurate with one's educational attainment. And people want to bitch and complain, "Baby Boomers have it bad too!" This grandpa had enough money to build a fucking castle. And here we are stressing over our financial situations wondering how we're going to help our families and pay bills. The fucking bills don't stop coming just because we're unable to find jobs.
I was expecting a sand castle.
Won't be official
unit you
stand in the tower,
and shout,
"You come back again we will insult you a second time!"
Can you give Grandpa a high-five for me?
Where's the moat? Downvotes.
Jk upvote. Your grandfather is an inspiration
[deleted]
He wouldn't have been able to build it in the first place if he hadn't talked to city and zoning. Unless he wants a burnt down or collapsed roof, he's going to want to stick to code. It exists for a reason.
That is GLORIOUS!!
This would take me 500 years.
So your grandpa cleared the lot, poured foundation, framed, roofed, plumbed, ran electrical, hvac, did masonry, doors, windows, fireplaces, insulated, dry walled, installed cabinets, lighting, painted, and did the flooring?? OK, I believe you but if you tell me he's also the architect, I'm calling bullshit.
He built it by hand!? As in without any heavy machinery? How much help did he have, and what was the most advanced tool he used?
This is truly amazing, a 100+ kudos to your Grandfather. A real man!
What have you Minecraft losers done lately?
Blew up a castle .. What about you?
I built a wood stand for my 40 gallon fish tank. Filled up with gravel and water the tank is like 300 lbs so obliviously it's pretty sturdy.

Whaaaaaaaaaaat?!
Your granpa is my new mancrush
I think I speak for all of us when I say what the fuck
And they call it a Mine!
It looks like something from Oblivion.
Can you get your grandpa to make a tutorial on how to build your own castle. I want that really bad.
i'd live in that castle so hard
Slipform stone masonry?
It is used to park the VF 1 Gundam
I read sand castle and was expecting a giant one.
I feel a sudden urge to play Skyrim right now.
DAMN! AWESOME!!!!
Yeahhhh, we're gonna need more pics OP..
Looks like something from Bruma in Oblivion
That's really nice. Is the bell tower finished. Was he still building after this photo was done? can we seem inside photos and other side views?
inb4 he built it on a swamp
Reminds me of high school and that one COD: Modern Warfare map.
Edit: auto-correct typo
Holy carp, that's awesome!
Skyrim mods are getting dope.
looks more like a church, in any case i would be very nice to get written in the will.
That is AMAZING and very cool!
I don't even have the patience to assemble basic IKEA furniture. Hats off to gramps.
Some guys got it and some guys don't. And I am no where's near fuckin havin it!!!!!
Why does everyone keep saying "by hand"? is there another way to do it?
Yes. By wallet.
Looks like a monastery.
now he can start a war with this guy

(or swap daughters, or whatever kings do)
Your grandpa is faster at building castles than George RR Martin is at writing books
This is literally my dream. This is very encouraging and I'd love to know more. Are you planning on doing any kind of blog or article about this?
I wonder if insulating those stone walls is a problem...
Your grandparents have the perfect house for my loner personality. Very jelly.
Feels very Skyrim-ish.
Smithing +1000.
No pic of Grandpa? We need to see the creator of this masterpiece
Is your grandpa going to be featured on an episode of doomsday preppers?
Is your grandpa a math teacher? I remember some years ago somebody posting about their grandpa who was a math teacher building his own castle.
Awesome build! But... If he spent 5 years building it, why not spend a few days to make thick giant tables for dinning instead of those crappy tables? Lol
I must do this..
that's cool man! May he enjoy his castle.
Is your grandpa's name Gates, Bill Gates.
We're the bricks allready there and your GrandPa added the wodden structure ?
Holy shit.
Psssh, I did that in Minecraft like 2 years ago.
I hope there's some insulation in the stone walls...
How much did that cost in total? Where do you guys live?? It looks like the middle of no where!
Also, it looks perfect.
All's well, that ends well. This definitely did.
The guy across the road from me has been slowly building a 2 car garage for the past 7 years, so your grandpa has done well.
Is your grandpa a Frey? I never did trust House Frey
It's amazing how much people can do in little time.
Ferdinand Cheval actually made an extraordinary castle on which he worked his entire life.
I WANNA LIVE THERE
Is your grandpa single?
Can i have your house??
Awesome, dude :D
Do the Guatemalans that built it get to live there too?
thats the most bad ass thing ive seen today
Dreadful castle. Could easily be stormed from several different directions. No moat. No gatehouse. No barbican. I don't even see any arrow slits or buckets for boiling oil.
It was his magnum opus.
Wow. Just, wow. That's something to be very proud of.
I don't mean to take away from how awesome this place looks, especially the location. I'd be interested to know the square footage of the living space. The tower obviously isn't livable, and the wrap around porch makes it appear much bigger than it probably is. I'd guess well under 2000 sq ft. Stone veneer (which is pricey!) doesn't necessarily achieve "castle" status, though it does look good.
That is a wonderful achievement. Love the tower and all the stone work.
Is he a stonemason? That's some fine work.
It ain't a castle without a moat. Just saying.
Can I come over? I'll bring food....and chainmail.
So he built it all by himself? With no help?
It's only a model
...will he build me one next? Please!
Pshhhh I built a castle in minecraft by mouse.
Looks like a sniper tower on top. Like out of Boom Beach. lol
Still less time than Grand Designs
Sweet castle! 10/10, would siege.
Awesome! Now, tell him to take it all apart and do it again. By foot.
Congratulations to our Grandpa :)
I wish my grandpa was cool like this... And alive.... :(
Where are your grandpa from??
Your grandpop looks like Geraldo Rivera
Where is the Iron Throne?
Submit it to /r/houseporn!
I was looking for sand and couldn't find a sand castle.
your grandpa is a master builder !
Looks like some call of duty map
Beautiful.. more photos please
Nice, I always wanted to build a house with my dad. I hope in a few years that can become a reality.
its pretty sweet!
See tho, when you said castle I thought you meant castle.jpg
Nice work by grandpa.
This looks like something a friend of mine from high schools grandparents were doing.
Wow
Your grandpa's cool and hot
Well cobbled.
Freaking awesome.
Are you sure this isn't Rust?
It worth 5 years time. I bet!
Ah the old castle with folding chairs. Story of my life.
How many hands did he have?
He missed a bit. Top left of the first pic...
I was the 5000's up vote!!
i'd love to see the inside of this house
I would definetly have something like this on the Patagonia, if I could afford it of course but it's my dream to have something like this and I'm decided to make it real!
That turret will keep those Mongolians out .
That is amazing!
So many new homes are just cookie cutter plans. This is a very, very refreshing and unique home design. Well done!
So this is what people do after they retire...
Family fights over inheritance are going to be more like Game of Thrones now.
Wow! The Starks should take him to renovate Winterfell.
VERY IMPRESSIVE particularly for one man. I do not see the moat though. Vulnerable.
reminds me of a fort in da:i!
..don't remember the name of the map though. :/a
Reminds me of the house in the MW2 map "Estate"
Well built stone house ,does it look like a castle to American eyes,is it because some of its made of cut stone, great achievement though
Looks like Poland?
There's some guy down the road from me who was doing the same thing more or less. Building a house stone by stone. Pretty sure he had gargoyles in the window? We walked by him one day while he was working on it. Maybe I'll get a picture.
I know too much about low-enrgy buildings. Part of me was like "awesome castle" and part was "Single layer stone and wood? It's literally freezing out there. That must cost a fortune to heat."
This looks like the lodge used in a Modern Warfare map. The Spec ops mission... So many Juggernauts towards the end.
Nice job building it, but as I must say: This is nowhere close to a castle.
I always open these pictures hoping to see my local cool castle dude's creation. Another day.
The main house in multiplayer snow map in last of us
Wot, no heads on spikes?
Definitely easier than building it by foot.
grandpas how work
Can I have it?
I read that as sandcastle and wondered to myself, "What the heck is he building a sandcastle at that age?"
Lmao, that's what I read it as, when I saw it earlier today.
Wasn't this a map on MW2?
Get away from my moat!
Can he be my grandpa too?
wow i love it
For some reason I read it as sand castle
I love this man!
Sweet, looks like a bad guys mountain lair
how much did it cost to build this awesome monstrosity? and what is market value??
Is that sand or snow in the foreground? It just looks so tropical on top.
A man's castle is his home.
There's just something about custom design and a boat load of patience
Looks really nice! Much respect to your grandpa!!
Fantastic architecture. Well done to your grandfather, I'd love to build something like that one day.
1 question, How?
I don't even know what to say.
Duke tim the toolman taylor
What a gorgeous house. I need to see the interior!! props to the grandpa!
How much would it cost to build a house out of stones you dig up? I mean, let's not be naive here, there will be costs. I just have no idea how to go about estimating them.
Man that is so cool!
To build something like that by hand is sure as hell commendable. Albeit doesn't look sturdy.
That's what I want to do with my life. Whatever I damn want.
If it wasn't built by hand, how else would it be built?
With dick n cum!
MTV Cribs need to get their asses down there ASAP.
You ain't gonna inherit that son, your blonde 20 something grandma will. :D
well shiiiiiieeeet
Is this real? if you can tell, how much money did he spend to do this?
How old is your grandpa?
Badass Grandpa farts in our general direction.
ok ONLY took him 5yrs. your grandpa. ONLY 5 years.
That. Is. Amazing.
That's awesome OP! Your grandpa is like a real life minecraft player!
Except not at all. One takes dedication, mastery of many skills, time, effort, and passion among other things. The other is a java game that you can pick up and figure out in a weekend with no real effort or challenge.
Wasn't your grandpa on tv? I'm not sure if it's this building, but I remember an episode somewhere, probably nat geo, where an older man was building a castle and this building seems really familiar as if I've seen it before.
Your grandpa is badass.
Imagine how awesome the world would be if it was only populated by grandpas...
your grandpa is quite the craftsman. It's beautiful.
Who filmed the making of ?
Well done, Grandpa!
I like the sniper perch. "Our father who art in heaven..."
Fuck yeah awesome post
I wanna live in Skyrim too. can I borrow him?
That's a really great house. Calling it a castle though, I dunno.
Minecraft is getting hyper realistic. What mod did he use?
That is gorgeous and probably solid as a rock.
he built it "by hand" ? What Were his other options?
How does an American retired maths teacher have enough money to build a castle to dance in? Good on him.
he's now going to burn it down for the insurance money!
Is this one Long Island New York by any chance?
It's like playing Minecraft but in real life.
'By hand'. I've yet to see a house built on an assembly line by machines so that fact may be unnecessary to mention
More pic's or it isn't real
Awesome!
Minecraft map packs have come a long way
Is your uncle's name Greg? He looks like someone I know, at least from the back.
Were the stones from the area and he collected them or did he have them hauled there?
I have dreamed of one day doing this for a long time now. This is inspiring, thank you for sharing!
Do the guy some justice and have all family gatherings there from now on.
Of course, it was built by hand! No 3D printers that big 5 years ago.
Amazing. Not to take away from your grandfather's hard work, but this home is not handmade. There is no way this home was made without machinery.
Do castles have foundations ?
Is it a house or a place to be rented out for corporate gigs etc?
I'm calling bs!!!!!
Grandpa is a master level Minecraft player.
This is exactly why the NSA is needed!! Sure its just one castle now, but who knows what plans Tywin Lannister hath on the roadmap of the conquest of the States of the New World.
Your Grandpa is a baddass, thats everymans dream!! And my Dad keeps saying there's nothing to do after retirement.
Very well shot photo. The house is beautiful! Congratulations to your Grandpa!
That is so cool!
How do you cut stones and wood with your hands ?
Where's the moat?
WOW! That's impressive! Congrats to him. Did he design this as well?
That is a masterpiece! Hats off to Grandpa!
Does he have a building permit?
He picked the wrong colour wood Imo. It's too bright
Mason?
First think I thought of was, "that bell tower is a great sniping position". Oh COD, what have you done to me?
Now all it needs is a moat and a draw bridge.
Incredible! Where is it so I can go lay siege to it?
Is he a Game of thrones fans, this is very cool how old is your grandpa?
That is... Amazing.
Define: 'by hand'.
cute
fair fucks to gramps, its beautiful, ignore the knockers
For some stupid reason I was thinking a Lego castle... A real castle is more impressive!
Man, this castle is REALLY Awesome!!! If you're so kind , put some pics more for REDDIT audience, will you?
Simply stunning! (Not really an interesting comment, but it's a wonderful accomplishment.) When I think of a homemaker, I would think of my Gran, who's hands placed most stitches in the linens and blankets in her home of 40 years. Your grandpa has brought a new level of awesome to the word!
I'd be impressed if it said "(by foot)" but of course he built it with his hands.
Very nice, but I'm betting a crane was involved at some point.
Remember to upgrade your new walls to accommodate your town hall.
Clash of the architectural designs...
House
The things people do for karma.
holy shit thats awesome. whats your grandfathers profession?
Is there some sort of sitting room at the top? So awesome!
Needs a moat
Does this castle happen to be in Delaware County, PA? I have seen something that looks really similar driving down the Blue Route. Either way, it looks awesome.
This looks like the "Estate" map on Modern Warfare 2
did he build it from actual stone bricks or is that just an added texture?
What skyrim mod is this?
So... he likes to play Minecraft?
Where's the moat?
Looks like an outpost from Farcry 4
This here's a story 'bout Billy Joe and Bobby Sue.
Two young lovers with nothing better to do,
Than sit around the house, get high and watch the tube.
Here's what happened when they decide to cut loose.
They headed down to, ooh, Old El Paso.
That's where they ran into a great big hassle.
Billy Joe shot a man while robbin' his castle.
Bobby Sue took the money and run.
It's beautiful!
That is truly amazing. Does it have plumbing and electricity (I'd have no idea how to build that system)? Either way, this is amazing and I'm extremely impressed.
Is the stone structural or just decorative?
Beautiful.
I would honestly want to raid that castle.
I'll bet this is Arkansas. The trees and stones look like Arkansas trees and stones, and this is the same kind of thing that the Arkansans I know would do. The state is full of backyard stonemasons. OP's granddad is one of the more skilled ones, though.
Awesome! More pics?
Bravo! That is awesome.
Made it to front page of Reddit, worth. And got castle out of it.
Check out Bishop Castle in Colorado, also hand-made. I have never felt more less of a man when I tried to climb that tower.
5 years is impressive how many sq ft is it?
OP: Was your grandpa on a documentary about this at some point? I swear that looks familiar and I watched some special/documentary about a guy who was building his own castle.
You sure you're not thinking of "doomsday castle". With the dad building his doomsday house with his kids?
That could be it. This castle looks exactly like the one I remember though. Maybe OP is a doomsday prepper.
Invite us over!
Where in Arkansas is this?
What? This looks like Johnny Cashs house in walk the line
from the one pic...it looks somewhat solid for a zombie defense
if he ever ends up wanting to sell (doubtful) you tell him i'm interested. ive finally found the home of mine and my SOs dreams!
This is legitimately my life's dream. Have a nice normal job and apartment in the city, but then build a sick castle in the woods a couple hours away overlooking a lake or river to getaway to on the weekends or summers. It would have a dungeon, big lookout tower, and of course some hidden passageways hidden behind a grandfather clock or bookcase. And you better believe I'd have a goddamn custom fitted suit of armor to wear in case a battle breaks out.
he needs a moat
I would love to see pictures of the inside!
Thank you kaiklops for giving me a life goal. I want this.
Moat? Come on man, your grandpa is slacking.
Holy shit. Is this in West Virginia? I think your grandpa and grandma once had me and my husband in for some blackberry cobbler.
Check out bishop castle in Colorado. Built by one guy over something like 30 years. http://www.stevegarufi.com/bishopcastle.htm
how much would it cost to hire your grandpa to build me a house like this?
Could a house with stone walls have good insulation?
I wonder how much he got fucked by taxes for building that.
Ops grandma is in another castle
Is it just me or did anyone else think it was going to be a miniature model castle?
just you
Damnit
Did he install a lightning rod on the top of the turret? Seems to be a pretty tall structure with the surrounding trees.
Probably would not matter since the structure is sort of isolated.
that has to be one of the coolest things Ive ever seen on reddit. GD that is F**** manly as hell.
Xcross post this S*** on reddit.com/r/fuckingmanly
Can't be the only person that saw this and though, "It's the Estate Map from Modern Warfare 2!"
It does look a lot like that. The house doesn't look the same at all, but the way it is framed and the woods around it does for some reason.
He should have spaced his second level roof joists out evenly. I can't un-see it now. Looks sweet though.
This looks like the house from that one map in MW2
I need one of these.
My parents have been working on the patio for the last 5 years
Now I want to build my own place by hand.
Woww if he had done "How to " video it could have won reddit.
Can he adopt me please ?
I would love to live there .
Your grandpa is a king amongst plebs.
Where's this at? P.S. Your Grandpa is a boss!
Where is his mote? Can't have a castle without a mote.
Sorry, I'm not trying to be a dick. But your house isn't to code, either demolish it yourself or a SWAT team will assist you with vacating the premises one night when you are sleeping and will then force you to watch as a dozer plows the building level. And this really doesn't give em any pleasure but you will be stuck with the bill for the SWAT team, the dozer and the disposal. Also its illegal to spend the night on an undeveloped lot with no permanent structures in place. We will be watching you closely to ensure no further codes or laws are violated on your property in the middle of nowhere far from any sign of civilization.
Because 'Merica.
Is this kind of stone work hard?
Was he going for a part medieval asia part withdrawn millionaire style?
more photos please, inside and out with your grandfather otherwise your just some stalker taking photos
We/Nobody believes he did it without a cats assistance. This is complete and utter bolder dash of the highest order. Cats rule.
OP is this in Michigan? Because I know a house very similar to this one.
How much time did he spend on this? I know post says 5 years, but is that full time? Now and then? etc...
Have you ever seen bishops castle? Some crazy guy built a castle in the mountains of colorado and hates Obama
I wish I could afford to build my own castle. Your grandpa's castle looks pretty cool.
This looks just like a house in a movie I saw. I forgot the name of it, but it is about people who went out in the woods to play paintball only to be ambushed by people with real guns.
Shake his hand for me. Really firmly please.
So proud of you grandpa!
May I ask what state this was built in and if your grandfather allows visitors? Im thinking of a very similar project.
Nice fuckin' call Grandpa! I gotta have a pic of the view from that balcony!
hm if that`s real. than cool =)
Awesome. Just finished building my trebuchet so I'll come over.
[deleted]
Yes that's basically what a castle is, but he added a it of modern to it.
You were being sarcastic to spite, but you're just stupid.
Castle: private fortified residence of a lord or noble. Usually thick and fortified walls.
So this is a great example of a castle even though it's small. Only stories and movies showcase big grand castles.
It's a very odd design. There's English castle, with an Asian roof at the top of the tower, a contemporary main floor, and a Mediterranean (maybe Spanish?) deck design. Whether that's all intentionally international, or it's just a mashup that wasn't well thought out, I don't know.
Or maybe it was well thought out and he simply has different taste than you.
Right? I thought it looked awesome...
I think it's really interesting, tbh. Grandpa is getting laid tonight
I think he took the best of each... It looks like an amazing place.
Ron Swanson.
Is he single?
doomsday preppers?
I was thinking that too, but that dude has had the shell of his castle built for more than 5 years, doesn't even have a roof yet! /s
OP! We need to know. Was this castle on doomsday preppers?
'tis but a cabin
Don't worry Holmes will make it right
What year is this?
Are you a time traveler?
2015
What is your grandpa? Fucking superman?
[deleted]
By the hands of 100 Mexicans
Holy shit, my grandpa built a house about 10 years ago and it looks like this except not castle. This is badass as fuck, mad props
That isn't a castle, that's a house with a pointless tower.
That tower will work great for zombie defense.
"Now to steal some princesses!" <- Your grandpa probably..
A castle technically has 4 towers.
This is just a house with a watch tower.
Sorry.
Did you grandpa every talk about knowing this guy? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Leedskalnin Edward Leedskalnin literally built a castle in Florida by hand, by himself. It took him a bit longer, but considering he claimed to move the stones by himself, it's impressive. Some consider Edward Leedskalnin to have accomplished the greatest task ever by a single man in human history(quarrying, moving, cutting, placing, and setting the rocks of his castle, by himself, without large machinery).
I want floorplans so I can build my own.
Looks cool, but what does "by hand" mean in this context?
Obviously he used tools. Does this mean he did it by himself?
By hand huh? No robots? I declare shenanigans.
Okay... You got me... In all truth... My gpa... IS A ROBOT
My gpa... IS A ROBOT
so is that magna cum laude or....
I demand pictures of the inside if/when it's furnished.
so, rich grandpa started building a home in 2010... 2 years after a financial "implosion"... im sure life is quite hard.
Even Reek could overthrow this castle with a crew of throwaway iron born.
Was he on Penn and tellers bull shit?
Bravo, nice work. Great design.
Beautiful house, but if you get significant snow it's going to fall stories from the roof of the tower onto the roof of the house. By simply changing the design and slope of the tower roof you can rectify this before someone gets killed in a roof collapse. I'm kind of surprised an engineer would pass this.
but...will it blend?
I see no murder holes and only 1 archer slit... 2/10 castle is not impregnable.
Edit: word
impregnable
I do not think that means, what you think that means...
forget one little word and everyone shits their pants
Usually stuff is built by hands
That is not a castle
grandpa must lift a lot
Looks nice, but not really a Castle is it?
If he dies in the near future you are likely responsible
ITT: Americans calling random stuff built out of natural stone "castle".
Well it isn't a house. And it has a tower. I dunno. Castle sounds cool. Shut up.
Lol. I like castle too. Castle sounds fun. Carry on.
How can it be a castle if it wouldn't even withstand a Zombie attack?
The tower has a door on the outside, window is not nearly high enough, no moat nor any other perimeter anywhere, way too many points where attackers can work the walls without getting shot.
The term you're looking for is "watchtower with barracks".
Dude, I hope you're fooling around with this captiousness, otherwise you need to relax. Castle does sound cool :)
It does, but actually withstanding a zombie attack is even cooler.
Castle?
Kind of
Who gives a fuck what your "grandpa" built?
[deleted]
If you say so, m8
That's pretty fucking beautiful man... I hope my husband and I can eventually replace our manufactured house with something this magnificent. It makes me cry because it reminds me of my grandma that just died from kidney failure last night. She worked so hard in her life yet there is no tangible evidence of what she's done. She pushed for women's rights, she was an activist, she was an editor, she was an ice skater- along with my long-dead grandma that did it professionally... a grandpa that helped NASA make satellites. These are people of progression-
First mission is to save the planet though, hopefully I'll be able to learn enough about geoenvironmental engineering and help be part of creating a global government. The world's depending on it. We need to embrace the fact that we've hit a corporate wall that's stopping us from having our human rights, civil rights, a decent quality of life, fair trade, fair trials... we're losing everything.
WE MUST EMBRACE THE FACT THAT IF WE DON'T CREATE A GLOBAL GOVERNMENT OUR WORLD WILL UNDOUBTEDLY FAIL WITHIN THE NEXT HALF CENTURY. THESE ARE SCIENTIFICALLY SUPPORTED FACTS AND THEORIES.
THE WORLD IS GOING TO STARVE, THE WORLD IS GOING TO DIE OF THIRST, THE WORLD IS GOING TO DIE OF WAR AND DECEIT ON ALL SIDES SUPPORTED BY CORRUPTION AND LONG-TERM CORPORATISM DISGUISED AS "CAPITALISM" FOR THE LAST SEVERAL DECADES!
MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD - PLEASE BE RESPONSIBLE AND CARE ABOUT HUMANITY. IT'S YOUR ONLY CHOICE THAT'S LEFT.
It's funny, the first half of this made you sound normal...
Normal people live without without batting an eye about what they experience. They aren't technically savvy, they are under-educated.. "normal" people are typically overall lazy people barely taking care of themselves. At least.. that's how the majority of people are that I've met in my life. It appears that you may be the same as "normal" people, so grats for you I guess?
There aren't enough people willing to look into what's going on in the world around them, like local policies, why certain laws exist, watching the Illuminati in action, it's disgusting.
If you had a clue what I was talking about, you wouldn't have bothered to leave a comment.
I thought "normal" people were the lazy ones
Uhhhh, what?
Castle?
That's not an actual home, is it? I mean, it looks like there's no room for electrical wiring. I would also assume there's not much in the way of plumbing and probably no HVAC.
It was cool until you posted it on reddit, now its shit art.
why did you wreck what he did?
That bitch is going to cold in the winter -- I hope he's not planning to live there year round.
He has a small penis doesnt he?
He should have chosen a darker type of wood. That would have looked 100 times cooler
No issue. The wood will darken with age naturally.
Wow, what a waste in the twilight years. 3 to 4 years he will enjoy it, then it will have to be sold to pay the massive inheritance taxes on the rest of his fortune that op's parents will enjoy and squander.
5 years? I get the satisfaction of wanting to do it yourself but you coulda got some mexicans at home depot and knocked this out in 2 weeks tops. And paid them with Tecate and tacos from taco bell.
He didn't really need to build this for anything. He's just retired, but likes staying active.
You're gonna get a bad ass castle some day
Well I'll need to fight off my evil uncle, but yeah. ):
pfft, use some of The Strangler and you'll have no problem.
You're an idiot
So, years of schooling, a career, and a 30 year contract with interest is not the only way to acquire a livable habitat? Please excuse my ignorance, i was born in the city. I thought the size of a man's house was based on his ability to compete in our democratic capitalist economy.
https://www.g2a.com/r/speederhun check this pls the best houses
I remember seeing this on a tv show a few years back, any idea what it was?
It was someone else. I guarantee it.
I don't think (by hand) means what you think it means
He dug up all the rocks with shovels. Set up all the scaffolding. Mixed all the mortar. Carried the rocks up the scaffolding one by one. Carried the mortar up bucket by bucket. This shit was as (by hand) as it gets. No heavy machinery involved.
I don't think you know what my grandpa did.
HI. I NEED KARMA SO. IDK. HERES A GREAT PHOTO OF A CAT NAPPING IN SOME MARIJUANA! YAY! :D https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSx0WNpPXZPoaWhmqQnyGZtwbMmmWrjzp6saxqwq9d5ZuO6nMtiHg
How are you going to post a thread of an awesome House Castle and only show us one picture?!
Doin' us dirty OP.
I dont know how to make albums in imgur... Also Ive only got 3 other photos, cause it's all my grandma dear sent me, but here are those images http://imgur.com/vqeJFUA http://imgur.com/UOiy2dL http://imgur.com/6xyQvxr
To be totally honest it looks like it would be pretty easy to attack with a small force of men and no siege weaponry at all. The tower provides no LOS defense against an approach from the main staircase.
[deleted]
A force comprised of Millennials armed with selfie sticks has arrived at the gate.
Oh god.... TURN OFF THE WIFI! IT'S THE ONLY WAY!
NO YOU IDIOT, THEY'LL JUST USE CELLULAR! THERES ONLY ONE WAY. looks over at big red button
I think so, Brain, but what if the hippopotamus won't wear the beach thong?
We won't know unless we try Pinky. We won't know, unless we try!
Simple minded fool!
Pushes button.
It means were going to turn off the internet!!!
/r/nocontext
Sometimes I wonder what you see in me, Pinkie.
I don't watch Family Guy, the joke is wasted.
Pinkie and the Brain reference
woosh (I think)
Oh, since I'm dyslexic and autistic I thought it said Brian.
When you don't understand just say narf
narf
How can you live with yourself?
By entertaining my self in other ways, such as: playing guitar, playing video games, watching the much better (in my opinion) Simpsons. I did hang out with friends, but yesterday I discovered that they were cunts.
You were supposed to stand behind 8, WHERE IS 8 GOD DAMMIT!
THEY TOOK HIM SIR points out window LOOK IF YOU THINK YOU CAN HANDLE IT!
Not necessary. Nobody, not even grandpa himself, knows the WiFi code anyway.
It will only be a matter of time before one of them starts sharing a 4g hotspot... THEY ARE EVOLVING!
Or as the Old Man from Pawn Stars says, "these idiots think ahm old fashioned. But ah was the one who set up the wee fee"
B-but sir! How will WE survive!?
WE DIE!! Best last quote in a movie ever
LOL
I don't even know what to say. That puppy!
FTFY.
How about "Quaid! Start the reactor!"
"Open your mind."
I think he meant Dennis Quaid...or possibly even Randy?? Yeah.
Definitely Randy
The puppy's name is Quatto.
Open your mind...
How did you all get to Total Recall?
Quatto appears on the guy's belly in totall recall.
I'll cut body bag before I cut Quatto, QUATTO'S GOLD.
That chest burster*
FTFY
You mean the warbeast?
So you did know what to say?
Sorry, I'm an infrequent Redditor. I wish I'd thought of Alien or Total Recall b/c then I would have had something to say! :D
"Woof!"*
*"Start the reactor, Quaid."
That is not a puppy. It is part of him D:
So, he cut the dog in half and mounted it on his armoured breastplate under his shirt? Strange-sure, but a pretty badass Grandpa.
Claymore...tartan tablecloth... Pack it up boys. He's a scot. We're going home.
But... But... I'm a Scot and I don't see you running from me!
These colors don't run!
We just had to go before the peace missles send you into pieces... Err peace. Now stand still.
A missle? Ha! It'll take more than that to blow our haggis and kilts out of the water!
Man I am glad no one in my family has brought cameras into the recovery rooms for any of my surgeries.
Edit: Best part was when he asked why he was seeing two of his grandma. Classic!
I'd be more afraid of the chihuahua than the sword, those little dogs are vicious.
And very puntable
I was thinking field goal. I guess it all comes down to field position.
Really depends on if you're going for height or distance. Personally, I prefer a little hang time with chihuahuas.
Made me think of Total Recall. Quaaaaiiiiddd!
that's unfortunately true
That Grandpa is Legendary.
Chihuahua crits +5 damage!
M as in Mancy.
That's quite the picture.
he looks like that guy from total recall!
"If I pull out the Claymore, you're shit out of luck."
This is the best thing I've seen all day. Go gramps go!
GOLD
That's a two handed blade of some variety most likely a Bastard sword.
it's far too large to wield effectively in an enclosed space.
OP's Grandpa needs to switch it with a short sword like a Wakizashi.
Sarge in his later years.
Awesome. This is gold.
A huge sword and an attack dog? Good luck with that castle sieging
Precious!
OPs grandfather is Kuato? You think he would've seen this breach coming.
Is that Staff Sergeant Randleman?
sweater puppy
I think your grandpas a puppet.
Dat puppet master tho
Edit: i dun fuckd up
Best picture I've seen on Reddit, hands down.
Look at the size of the mits on ol' Pap!
At least he's well stocked with booze. Party time with the Nancy boys.
I was thinking more along the lines if this... http://imgur.com/gallery/nS7nFvS
That fucking dog. "Woah holy shit Dave!"
Granps will have none of your shit! Now off with your head!
Sir Pappy the Puppy-Hearted!
That's the Dragon baby...
That's a chihuahua, I'm out.
What is this, a jack links commercial?
[deleted]
Nice.
You kind of lose the fierceness with that stupid Chihuahua poking out of his shirt.
That's when your pathetic forces are wiped out by the tactical onager hidden at the top tower.
Or he could welcome them in, offering bread and salt...
... have a wedding feast...
It's a trap!
Not if they break bread. If they break bread together everything will be okay, right?
Guest right? Guessed wrong.
Would you like some small pox with that turkey?
Haha no but I would like some small cocks in my turkey
No, just smallpox please!
No silly the smallpox is in the warm blankets he'll kindly offer to his guests

Not if its a white wedding, only if it's red.
Too late, winter came all over the land.
Yeah guys, go to /r/traps, it's just pictures of innocuous looking castles.
This reference made me sad all over again
Playing Telltale's Game of Thrones made me sad all over again... One need only experience the Red Wedding in so many different media..
Damn Ramsay too. telltale needed to remind us how ruthless he is right away. Even tried all the choices! Damn you, Ramsay!
Haha, the old trap of trying different choices. No matter what you do, Ramsay is a bastard. It is known :)

Maybe it would just be salt.
I know where this is going
Heh.
I bet there is a host of knights on top with cauldrons full of scalding oil
Hosts and hosts of them
Burning oil is good, but what's better is white hot sand.
Eh? Sand?
I picked up the idea somewhere that burning hot fluffy sand would fuck dudes up.
No, just one bad-ass grandma with a vat of chicken soup. "Just because I'm trying to kill them, they can't die happy?"

Have you even played age of empires bro?! /s
A single man? Looks like redditors are safe,
A ballista mounted on a rotating platform is clearly the way to go.
I once saw a couple of onagers, they didn't seem very tactical.
What with all their youtube inspired Amazon "instant EDCs" and such
"Will YOU be my hero? "
Tipped your hand and I always have reserves

"Grandpa! That isn't what onage is! Put it away!"
They were a bunch of filthy freebirths anyway.
hey bro, only we can say that word
OP didn't mention that there is a moat in the works. 7 years to finish...tops! Maybe 12 if they live in a high drought area.
In all serious though...this is amazing. These post always motivate me (to cry uncontrollably because I have very little talent)
Grandpa settin up franchises
I don't know how much actual talent this would need over that timeframe. Maybe three months to have plans drawn up depending on your local building laws, and then it's just moving rocks and wooden beams, cementing them into place, maybe a little carpentry for the interior walls and stairs.
As long as you were dang stubborn about moving something into place every single day, even if it was just one rock, you'd get there in the end.
I'll lead delta from the right and take the tower. You and bravo breach the two front entrances. Alpha will break through the cellar and fight their way up. Meet me tomorrow at 06:00 behind the forest line. We'll need to be quiet so he doesn't alert anyone else. http://imgur.com/ez1OqLD
But old people wake up early, we have to attack late at night. I say we go in around 01:00.

yes

How does a robot cum?? -_-
Jokes on you, fucker's surrounded with landmines.
The best castles have defensive strategies that are not immediately clear at first glance. This one probably as an ar-15 or other handheld cannon. It has been shown time and again that every form of armor available in the middle ages has been defeated by the ammunition fired from these weapons. Granted...this all assumes that only time travellers from the middle ages would bother to attack this house because it resembles a castle and that is located somewhere in the United States.
"Probably"? What leads you to think this is "probably" the case?
It's a castle and actual cannons are illegal...was my reasoning for suggesting something I couldn't possibly verify.
Did op say the moat was done being made? No. Everybody knows black knights can't cross water.
There's a troll in the dungeon.
Hopefully no Internet access.
I like the way you think sir.
But i bet it has a nice wine cellar.
The OP's granpa needs some gun turrets.
Yes and winter is coming
Winter already came, look all the white stuff all over the place.
Depends on whether or not anyone in his clan has donated troops, but with no air defences, one dragon could wipe it out.
Well..as long as you're being honest about it.
It's almost like its a castle themed cabin retreat, instead of an actual castle.
No, you just need one jack ass from the city planning dept to find one electrical outlet is upside down.
Not to mention he hasn't cleared the vegetation back from the castle, allowing cover for the enemy to approach.
Ha only fools attack from the MAIN staircase. It's so 1667.
Really needs a moat. Helps keep the black knight at bay.
/r/outside
GENTLEMEN TO BED
thats because OPs grandfather is a necromancer
Watch out for the archer tower. It fires more rapidly than it used to after the most recent update. That's a level 7, right?
Bloody 'ell. The woods are already at Dunsinane.
Just use all drags and rage spells. Easy 3 star.
what game are you referencing?
For some reason I was thinking about capping towers in Alterac Valley (WOW).
It's a castle, not a fort.
[deleted]
Weren't castles just a walled building in a defensive position? OP's granddad needs to go Bran the Builder before he's done.
Castles usually don't have verandas... ;) Unless those steps are retractable, that's not a castle, it's a house with ideas above its station.
But Manor Houses are also often known as Castles. They tended to fulfil much the same purpose, even though their fortifications were usually more for show than anything else.
Manor houses were more tacticool than defensible.
manor houses are just villas for rich people that dont have to be afraid of being attacked at all.. most actual castles are fortifications in strategic positions
...you do understand the purpose of a castle, right?
My bad. Turns out, castles by definition are supposed to be defensive structures.
What I should have said was, "it's a castle-styled cabin, not a real castle". The point is, it's obviously not meant to defend against armies.
It's an outpost at best.
But it is not wheelchair accessible.

What, did you reply to the wrong comment? He was talking about besieging the castle, nothing about how much work he did.
Awesome house, but plastic tables and chairs?
That room is gunna be a little dance hall, so for the most part, there won't be furniture in there. They were just having a lil get-together with their friends in it.
Fair enough, what's the situation with the tower? Can you go to the top of it? It seems as though it's just open up there.
You can go to the top of it, but it's basically open to the weather. There's a spiral staircase on the inside.
In-law suite!
"Aw, mother-in-law, you don't have to lie there in the cold! Go home!"
It's a tower, not a cemetery..
Ah. Never mind.
Widdows peak. Just lock the door behind them :D
I feel as though he's dropping the ball on some serious trap-door potential up there.
Prease, come meet me on top of the Tower of Peace. It would be rearry nice. Yesss, and when you get to the top of that tower you're gonna get a rittle surprise, you Mother-in-L.. Oh, sorry. Anyway, see you on top of tower!
Thanks for showing the inside pics. The place looks amazing! It must be something else for him to sit back and see it all finished! Let us know when you get to house sit for a weekend! ;-)
Show us pictures of the dungeon and catacombs!
Gotta have a place to hold your prisoners. this way the peasants can hear their screams of suffering even better.
I like your way of thinking.

Heretic! Guards, kill him!

ATTENTION, I UNDERSTAND THIS REFERENCE.
Why in the fuck did your grandpa build a dance hall. Why is nobody else wondering this?
I was thinking Knights should at least get a round table
He needs to replace that table with a thick wooden round table. Those lanterns with candelabras. And needs more goblets. Then it will be perfect. Oh and swords, need plenty of swords.
I would gladly forgo a furniture budget to be able to afford a castle.
Plastic folding chair in the Veyron. A bold move...
Especially that kind of furniture. It looks as uncomfortable as fuck, even when you'd put your feet up. O/10, would not sit.
So there is a 0/10 chance that you wouldn't sit. So you would sit... Trying to mislead us to not sit so you can enjoy the lavish furniture yourself. Nice move.
It will be the greatest beer hall ever, plastic chairs makes for easier cleanup.
Maybe he could not be a lazy ass and start carving some wood.
What a steal!
Free delivery?! I'll take 2!
Damn, they only have 5 left. If they had a full set of 8, that might be different...
Fuck the chair! I need me about 10 of those $600 ottomans. If I stick them around the rooms of my house, my MIL will freeze at their ugliness and forget to criticize me.
ONLY 5 LEFT!
FREE DELIVERY? How do they keep the lights on?
But you get FREE delivery.
Seriously though, what would a person skilled enough to create that charge? I assume even the most talented woodworker would take weeks to make something like that.
Lazy fucker
What was it? The old Reddit Hug O' Death strikes again.
I wonder if those slippers are included, would buy!
But does it come with those kick ass slippers?
He should buy that chair just for himself and prop it up on a platform so it's higher then the others, and give everyone else the plastic ones.
Mead hall*
It's the "Grandparents want everyone to visit, often" room.
I know, because my parents are setting up something similar.. :/
Post pics in five years!
Sorry, didn't mean to give you the impression my parents were building an awesome castle like this guys. They're setting up a "Family Get Togethers" room with plastic folding chairs, folding tables, cheap tablecloths, etc.
There is no reason to expect it will take that long. His parents could have started years ago.
Castle* Come on now. Don't under value it like that!
Looks great, but I've never understood the sort of roof that is over the deck. It block enough sun that you can't get warm from it but can get glare in your eyes sometimes, and it let's all the rain in.
But they look super cool with stuff growing on them
Yeah, I assume this is the intent.
That makes sense, but I've seen one or two ever with stuff actually growing on it.
I've been planning on building something like that because it gives me a surface to add a removable mossie net to prevent bugs from eating me alive without it looking like ass. But most people just want plants. Most people get eaten by bugs.
Its designed for growing things. Removable covers based on sun levels for plants that don't like direct sun, as as mentioned, vines like grapes. People just use them incorrectly.
It's a pergola (I assume), i.e. a base on which plants are grown, commonly vines or other trailing leafy plants. They provide nice dappled shade.
It's called a pergola, the structure over the deck. Love them!
I was wondering that as well. I assumed it was unfinished and need some sort of canvas cover. Seems like a waste if it can't block out the rain. :(
Allows breeze in summer while blocking the midday sun?
Yeah, it's called an arbor.
Nice
Now go talk to your grandpa and tell him to send more fucking pics fucking pronto or we are going to fuck his shit up!!!
How I imagine Reddit would besiege a castle
How I imagine Reddit would besiege a castle
Controllers for such a delicate operation?
I imagine reddit besieging a castle with those from /r/MilitaryStrategy commanding and those from /r/fitness being the actual army.
or /r/Besiege
That's pretty accurate haha

ah, the old reddit seige-a-roo
How is this a switch-a-roo though? It's just remarkably inefficient.
Hold my bow, I am going in!
And my Axe
I followed your link.. Then I followed another one inside, and another one, and another one...It's like inception, I'm in too deep and I can't retrace my steps..
Hold my battering ram, I'm going in.
I plunged into the madness, following the wake /u/artorias left in the abyss. I fell down the rabbit hole. I learned things, secrets that must never be told, and knowledge that must never be spoken. I traveled through years, and I watched as time ran out.
I pity all those that follow me and witness its untimely end. But I pity none more than myself.
Hold my reason for having a coconut, I'm going in.
Actually, that's more like reddit defense.
Oops. It happened already.
Is it sad I knew what this was before clicking it?
The window was opening and I was like "its gonna monty python its gonna be monty python its gonna be monty python I knew it."
I only have one upvote.
No no no, like dis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2ymRfAa_a4
"Homestead"? It's a fucking castle.
I laughed.
I made estimated blueprints based on these pictures. Enjoy!
Nice work.
Really impressed you got this together so fast. You're incredibly talented.
How did you do that from sight?
Seems like he just didn't give up.
probably felt like he shouldn't let us down.
Well I don't think he's going to run around and hurt anyone.
Didn't click the link I'm glad I didn't
Sometimes I cannot believe how many smart, talented and/or clever people are along for the "Wasting time on Reddit" ride with me.
It's like being in a weirdest high school class after which people grow up and you're dumbfounded what they've become: "Duckie is the president of the United States?! But he used to wear his underwear backwards."
those are suprising good
Those are amazing!
Wow that's actually pretty talented, don't give those up for free or anything. Imagine the let down if you saw someone else making money from your work.
Thumbnail shows up on mobile. Didn't get me this time villain.
Sonofabitch!
Wow. youtube ads have killed rick rolls. sad
is your grandpa on doomsday prepper?
If grandma had to send photos to you, it sounds like it is time you stopped by for some milk and cookies.
I will be soon I hope!
This is so cool, where is this at? why do I feel like this is in Canada?
Folding chairs in a castle? Come on gpa
Chapel hill?
It's got a mead hall!
Now he can start on the moat.
I love the castle and the house that your grandparents built! But I think its hilarious that they then furnish it with $10 plastic chairs.
[deleted]
I don't know the answer for this house, but stone is a great insulator. A friends family has an old house with 18 inch thick stone. No heat or AC but its always pleasant inside.
Before you hit "Upload" make sure the option "create album" is checked
Awesome home! Love the deck!
Is this around the Barrington area?
I think he has to treat that wood so it doesn't turn grey from UV damage. I was really happy with the "Penofin Verde" on my deck.
I'd like to climb that tower and jump off it into a loose pile of hay.
It must be cold as balls in there. What's the insulation like?
Holy mother of god we need to get a photographer and camera to grandma.
I'd be slamming stick figures for days.
No moat? Weak, Gramps.
How much did this cost? I legitimately want to build one.
Very impressive work. What does he do for insulation? i.e. is it solid stone in those walls or are they insulated in between?
Also, what did he do for a living before taking this on?
This is seriously a dream of mine that I have every intention of realizing one of these days. If your gramps has any info he would like to share I would pay him just to get a small work up of the project. I'm dead serious.
No dude, we need like an MTV Cribs tour.
So your grandpa can build himself a castle by hand and you don't even know how to do an album on imgur. Life is unfair sometimes.
Buy him a round table. ^^^^( ^^^Make ^^^him ^^^a ^^^round ^^^table ^^^)
Just choose more photos to upload and tick "create album"
people send more photos of their breakfast than your grandpa of his castle
Those chairs... straight out of the Middle Ages, clearly.
So he has an amazing house, but its furnished with fold up tables and chairs? I don't get it....
Saved to camera roll. New dream in my life. Fuck yes to Grandpas.
With all of that shoddy tableing and terrible table-clothing! What is this? A castle for Aunts?
So...no insulation?
you better give us more pics when you eat thanksgiving dinner in there, OP.
Looks like the "Estate" map in Call of Duty MW2
OK, well, you're going to need to learn then: https://help.imgur.com/hc/en-us/articles/201146429-How-do-I-create-an-album-
That dinner table looks like a pain in the neck
This might be the only time in my life I see a castle with interior folding chair seating
folding chairs, no round table, no roast pig with an apple in its mouth? For shame
how much dollas did it cost
You know, I've got honestly no clue. Your speculation is as good as mine, but he probably spent about as little as is possible to do something like this.
Ermmm WOW, it's 2015 and you don't know how to properly use Imgur?! I'm sure the fort you built is cool, but let me tell you right now that this community does not take kindly to flippant agricultural laziness. Expect downvotes.
The inside is still 5 years from completion
Are you planing to have a wedding there?
thanks for this comment, I want a full tour!
That's exactly what I came here to say, but it appears you thought my thoughts first. So I'll just upvote you instead.
He was saving the rest for comment karma
