It ran around in frantic circles and then flew directly into my face and gave me a teensy panic attack in the middle of class that I had to play off as a sneeze or risk looking weird.

It scales up, too. I watched the Sherriff's department "mounted Olympics"- a completion of sorts for deputies who do mounted patrols to test the training and temperament of the horses.
In one event, they had to ride into a circle drawn in the grass with lime, turn and fire three (blank) shots at a target. I was very surpriesed at the number of horses who refused to cross that line on the ground. One guy finally got his horse into the circle and fired off the three shots - and the horse didn't flinch. "I don't mind gunfire, but lines on the ground? Noooo"
Horses are kind of stupid to be fair. Trust me I own one. They're afraid of the STUPIDEST things - mine in particular is afraid of garden hoses, rolling coolers and white crosswalk paint. The most useful application I can see for this is if you notice someone elses lost wallet, and don't care to pick it up, then drawing a circle around it may mean it will be left there until the true owners return :3
It just shows that even when they don't know nobody is there, the simple act of drawing a circle around a valuable item left in public may keep people from taking it. I'd guess that nobody wants to grab it because the yellow circle drawn around it makes it seem like the wallet serves a purpose just sitting there, and they might be noticed if they take it. I guess it's sort of a psychological experiment.
In that video people are not touching the wallet BC they can automatically tell it was not dropped there by accident, whether they realize it or not. Something tells them it was deliberate and the person is watching and/or coming back.

I don't know..I think it has to do more with the fact that the desired artifact derives attention and so the stakes are higher, people feel safer to steal covertly than overtly.
What if the (still noticeable) circle was brown? it still conveys that the wallet is there on purpose but I bet more people would go for it.

Not necessity deliberate as it is giving the message that someone has already noticed the wallet, in my opinion.
I know my thought process would be - "Am I the first person to notice this wallet? is there anyone else currently checking and judging me?" and I believe most of the people think that.
But yep, all kind of arguments for and against doing something coexist in a person's head at a fraction of a second..

My cats are both Out Door cats, they spend all most all of their time outside in my suburban neighborhood... They like boxes, but I couldn't get them to sit in the square....
Could it be because all the cats that do this are indoor cats? so they feel like they are "trapped" in a box, and this mindset leaves them prone to sitting inside the square on the floor?

Bad news, it's probably not your dog's fault. A typical dog learns about a 100 word vocabulary. Your dog probably knows a bunch of words like food, vet, walk, park, car, and the like. It's just that no one has showed it that it can get treats, and much more importantly attention and affection, for using that knowledge.
Now, it's entirely possible that you've spent hours working with your dog, and that it's just particularly stupid/lazy, but more likely than not, you're the one that's the problem. If you want a dog that knows lots of cool tricks, what you have to do is train it.
