The weirdest part is that the show draws you in like "Hey, this is one of those late Gainax shows with lots of boob jiggle before they all left and became Trigger. It's full of wacky hijinks and fun adventure, animated in a hyper-kinetic style with lots of bright colours!" And then once you're all settled in and comfy it hits you with this plot.
There's a lot of context they left out regarding the relationship between the three >!the wizard left town because the jealous childhood friend was planning to kill him for sleeping with glasses girl. These three are actually reincarnated people from feudal japan. In their original lives, the three were childhood friends, with the jealous guy and the glasses girl being married. However the wizard and the glasses girl fall in love and have an affair. Jealous guy, after learning of the affair, kills glasses girl and himself. The grieving wizard, at the cost of his life, performed a forbidden ritual to resurrect them. This results in the three being reincarnated in modern Japan, with only the wizard retaining his past life's memories. Modern day glasses girl was the one who pursued him, with him initially resisting her. Realizing that history would repeat itself when the jealous friend was ready to kill him, the wizard left town.!<

People might have different preferences for nose shapes and sizes for example. But almost no one will say that crooked misshaped nose is beautiful, and those who do will likely be lying.
What you are trying to do is to replace the definition by claiming different meaning to already existing one. When someone uses expression "they are beautiful", no one is going to think "Oh, I wonder what they are talking about", everyone will clearly know it is about appearance, because there is established norm for meaning of the word.

This is a beautiful and yet very painfully good way to do sadness. Make it silent and not overdone or with a dramatic spectacle. Have the ripping pain tear both the character and the viewer from the inside while either silence or happy music plays. The way his happy expression fades speaks more volumes than a library. This is realistic emotion, and it's executed in a way that puts a lot of overdrawn outward emotion in media to shame.

No, it's not that. It's that she has something boiling under the surface that might not be obvious just looking at her, and which she keeps bottled up because she's a girl living in Showa Japan. This actually conveys something about her character, which is something that runs through the subtext of the show right until the end.
I'm sure with context you can do the work to make it look meaningful. I'm saying as someone with no context there are multiple shots that choose overtly sexual angles for literally no reason other than "pretty lady"
She gets all this focus on her skirt and her breasts yet I can't even tell what kind of pants the man in yellow is wearing. You can say well who cares, that doesn't matter. Neither does damn near seeing up her skirt, yet they still show it. We literally don't even see the face of the man she gives the bento to.

Early 2000s is when most animation studios switched from hand painted cel animation to working with computers.
Regardless, from the 90s onward is when anime moved from having a "standard look" to adopting wildly different styles for each piece made. It can be really difficult to tell the age of an anime just by style alone.
Good animation is simply timeless.
A great example is Sleeping Beauty. One of Disney's most detailed works that stands up to the Renaissance era movies without breaking a sweat.
Sleeping beauty looks beautiful but the high amount of frames always makes it look like the interpolation effect was added to the film, Like it looks too smooth, if that makes sense. For some reason animation with tons of frames never really looked good to me. Same thing with live action videos and movies that use more than 25 fps.
But yeah, a lot anime from 2000-2004-ish looked like anime from the 90s so I was surprised how this one looked so different.
That's because vision in real life also has some motion blur. It is a rare genetic anomaly for a person to have ultra-high frame-rate vision.
No, no it doesn't. This is empirically not true. Motion blur is a tool to try and deal with the problem that low static refresh rates imagery causes with visual processing. Once you have static refresh rates over a certain threshold, motion blur is not only not required, its arguably actively bad.

Case in point: Gemini Man. The drastically increased frame rate feels alien to many people. But to a lot of perople, like PC gamers, its was like 'holy shit its not complete garbage'

I've been looking for this show for ages. I really wanted to watch this on Hidive but they removed it (like so many shows) before I could watch it and I actually forgot what it was called. So seeing this post and looking it up has finally put an end to that search.
In future if you just have gif or image from anime, you can search it up on trace.moe - it will even tell you which episode and at what time (if it finds it)
Oh no that wouldn't have helped. I had no images from it and I didn't write it down anywhere to remind myself. I only knew about from Hidive. Saw the poster of it on their website and was like "that looks cool, I'll get around to that soon", added it to my watchlist and the following week I went to go find it and it was missing - another victim of Hidive's removal of content. Thats when I wised up about Hidive's shitty preservation of their parent company's shows. So I never remembered what it was called or anything, only the poster which I didn't save either - pretty stupid really.
But its a good thing that the stuff you try to look for would often find you if you wait long enough. Now I'll definitely write it down for later.

I never heard of this anime until I decided to buy the dvd set at an anime convention, which came in this really nice tin. The price was good, so I though, "Why not?"
