I guess Skyward Sword is to blame for separating them by making Zelda accept her role as the goddess's reincarnation otherwise she was Links childhood friend with a obvious romantic inclination to him.

Not royalty that gets saved/peasant that saves her. Zelda must be royal because her blood is sacred, descended from the original human Zelda(who is Hylia) in Skyward Sword. Link, on the other hand, needs not be born special or peasant. In BotW, indeed, he is born the son of a line of Knights and Royal Guard, IIRC. Zelda generally is in danger and gets saved because that's how they chose to write the plot lines, given that Link is the protag, but not necessarily. In Wind Waker Zelda/Tetra, though born royal, is not in need of being saved, and in BotW Zelda is more holding the line of absolute destruction by her own will than in dire need of a hero to rescue her from the big bad guy.

Given the time spans between games, it's not impossible or improbable that Link and Zelda marry every time and one of their descendants has an affair with a peasant woman, or one gets married off to a minor noble family whose status gets lost and forgotten or something, and Link gets reincarnated through one of those lines while Zelda is reincarnated through the original royal family line. After all, Breath of the Wild mentions an entire 10000 year history that's never been depicted in any game but that still comes after the previous games.

This could technically resume and continue through the Adult and Hyrule Decline time lines too, though those Links would no longer have geneological ties to the original.

To be fair, they're all different Links and different Zeldas in most games. Some of them are just acquaintances while they could be more in other games. Also, Link and Zelda are more or less confirmed to kiss in Zelda 2 so take away from that what you want.

Luke and Leia kiss, too.

I'm not that active in the community and haven't played zelda on switch... But I have skyward sword and tho they might not the dating, they definitely want to get in each others pants. It has to be canon that they have feelings for each other, no?

Time for a way too long comment analyzing their relationship:

Skyward sword is a different incarnation of Link and Zelda, but they definitely come across as having more chemistry together than most games.

They're explicitly childhood friends, and there's a lot of NPC dislogue that implies that they're seen as that couple that will inevitably end up together.

Breath of the Wild is a bit more vague. In flashbacks, Link is stoic and doesn't really get close to anyone (it's explicitly stated in a diary from Zelda that Link chooses not to talk much, i.e., why he's a silent protagonist)

The closest you see him get to a romantic interest with someone is Mipha, and that's shown to not be mutual on Link's side. It's not really shown why.

Flashbacks show that it takes awhile for Link to even slightly warm up to Zelda, but even then, his shown relationship is more of a sense of duty to protect her. If he does have romantic feelings, it's not explicitly stated.

So, can Link be a royal protector who accidently caught feelings for his charge? Yes.

Could he also be an asexual guy who goes to the end of the earth for Zelda because that's his job and he also views her as a close friend? Also yes.

There's also a part of the Fandom that likes to head canon that Link as LTGBQ, so portraying him as straight and explicitly dating Zelda ruffles their feathers a bit sometimes. I don't mind head canon-ing that stuff if it's not debunked in the actual game, and so far, as I said, they haven't said either way.

Haven't finished Tears of the Kingdom yet, so who knows, maybe they kiss or something at the end

TLDR: Why did I waste my time writing this

It varies from game to game because they're always different reincarnations that are fated to come together. In games like OoT and BotW, they're clearly very close, but in others like ALttP and TP they don't have much of a personal relationship outside of working together to deal with the problem.

Imo the most likely version of Zelda to actually be into Link is Tetra. She's not into any of the men in her crew and Link's protective attitude towards his sister strikes a chord with her.

I'm currently depressingly laying in bed b/c my partner is angry with me for being sad and disappointed w/ the new game. I played the tutorial Thursday night and really liked it, haven't played since and just gave him the controller.

Zelda was my introduction into the gaming world and I have played almost every title to date, but this has me really disappointed so far. He only ever played BotW before meeting me, so it's a new school vs old school battle I guess.

This animation is so cute and wholesome though that it made me cry a little bit and reminded me that I still do love Zelda, I just don't like what they've done. It doesn't feel like that Zelda magic I fell in love with, but this somehow captures some of that.

I have now discovered the best YouTube channel ever. I love The Legend of Zelda!
