American dad has honestly been pretty damn funny for longer than Family guy ever was.

Itā€™s because things actually go somewhere I feel like. Like when I see Stan being an asshole I can confidently say heā€™s being an asshole because heā€™s going to have a character arc that episode or it will tie into the moral somehow, or it will at least be consistent with his character and funny like when he braked too hard and killed that couple, while Peter will do something completely wretchedly abusive and horrible and uncomfortable and it will just move on like itā€™s perfectly normal and nothing will happen or change. Plus american dad just has better writing overall, especially with rogerā€™s crazy shenanigans and how blunt stan is, and it has the balls to not have every episode end like family guy where Peter goes ā€œI guess this whole time I was the bad family guyā€ and sometimes things donā€™t actually get fully resolved because the characters actually feel like PEOPLE, granted psychotic people but still people with consistent characters rather than just abusive hateful inconsistent vessels for whatever the underpaid passionless writers need to jam it to pad the run time because theyā€™re all out of ideas.

American dad also just has so much more creativity, doesnā€™t rely entirely on cutaways, and so much more color and vibrancy with its art style with tons of side characters who have clear defined lives outside of their relations to the smiths (like my favorite Greg and terry) and itā€™s not NEARLY as mean spirited with its writing, like bad things happen to people and people can be selfish assholes but thereā€™s actual wit and humor on display like when they pretend to be friends with tuttle to be famous and itā€™s not just horrifically uncomfortable and horrid like when Brian married a girl with cancer for the brownie points just to find out he hated her and she hated him

Yes, but language is important, saying 'relies' makes it sound like it 'has to be this way', and now you're in a curious position where you're defending the thing you claim to be against - effectively defending the Wolfowitz doctrine

This statement was a natural evolution of the Monroe doctrine, under which the US understood itself as having the right to it's hemisphere, leading to it's further metamorphosis into the aforementioned Wolfowitz doctrine, and in more recent times, a sort of global Monroe doctrine, that is being attempted to be balanced out by multipolar forces like the BRICS and the SCO.

yeah, the first few years of the CIA were perhaps the worst. They were installing dictators all around Honduras, completely screwing people over. Just straight up evil. They got their shit together after a while, but I think it's mostly just all done behind closed door more. "Don't get caught" type of stuff.

And now the US State Dept has essentially been the operative arm of the CIA for a few decades. The CIA was running arms to Islamofascist jihadis using the cover of the US State Dept out of a US State Dept annex in Benghazi.

When I was in high school history class about 20 years ago I brought up the CIA being responsible for the crack cocaine epidemic, and nobody believed me. Didn't help that I read about it on Erowid, nowhere else. Smart people, that later went to university to become doctors and lawyers, looked at me like I was some kind of looney conspiracy theorist.

Commented above about how I always just totally believed this and was a little surprised at how little evidence exists beyond those kinds of stories. Also not willing to dismiss it entirely, but I'd rate my confidence level much lower than it was before I read into it.

The LSD stuff is another thing that casts doubt for me too, actually. They copped to MKULTRA which included LSD experiments on US citizens, Project Paperklip, involvement with Contras, sending nazis to destabilize Latin America, basically everything. And no one is around who could really take the fall for it these days. So it's just a little weird to me that they'd still deny this one so adamantly. I know about contra but didn't know about the Hitz report. I love being wrong on the internet because I always get more information than I would from being right so you've given me some stuff to look up and get better informed.

The scandal was first conceived as a possible means of covert financing in 1977 while Bush senior was director of the CIA and was officially conspired by Bush and Casey in 1982. Let me disclaim this up front by saying that I personally have no problem believing it. And that I'm an idiot who knows nothing about history, really. I legitimately thought this was a confirmed fact.

But I happened to have looked this up the other day and I am less confident now. I guess the original information mostly came from one news article, which was followed up by another that had done their own investigation. There is an official response on the CIA website to both articles.

It seems like the second article disproved several things from the first, while also finding other evidence that supported the idea. But then the CIA response was able to demonstrate that some of that was false too. And a lot of what they didn't disprove was pretty spurious. There were multiple investigations by multiple groups within the government and they did not find anything to substantiate this claim. There have been other independent journalist investigations since, of course, which claim to have uncovered more information, but again no one can confirm any of it.

So, not telling you what to believe at all. There are certainly a lot of dots that are easy to connect, plenty of anecdotal evidence, and it definitely is their MO. But I genuinely thought this was a confirmed fact and was surprised to learn it is still very speculative at best and a conspiracy theory at worst. And I just wanted to add that context for anyone else like me who didn't even question it before.

Reddit is funny sometimes. His comment was an invitation for anyone who wanted to share more concrete evidence, add to or correct him, and possibly start an actual discussion. Not a "I'm right, you're wrong" comment, which for some reason is how you read it.

This site has way too many sarcastic smug comments that only have two outcomes: It shuts down the discussion entirely (because no one wants to feed the troll) or it turns into a screaming match.

Its crazy how people can preface their comments with "I may be wrong, I don't know the full story, I don't have a strong opinion" and people still reply like they are talking to Hitler himself and they must bring justice!

It is really really well documented. An investigation turned up serial numbers on weapons with matching receipts showing that the CIA had purchased weapons for Nicaragua. Pablo Escobar moved his cocaine delivery hub from Cuba to Nicaragua the very same year these purchases happened. President Regan spoke openly about it and said he supported supported the Contra sales as a means of circumventing congress to find financing. The inspector general effectively released a report that said ā€œit really wasnā€™t that much crackā€. How is this speculative? Do you need the CIA director and the President to hold the crack pipe and light it for you?
