Haha not basically. Literally! I watched this exact video for inspiration on what to put in.

The reason why anime openings were like that is because they were just a collage of assets made in the stress-testing/training phase of the project.

  • can we draw our characters running?

  • can we draw our characters from the back and then having them turn around?

  • can we animate a moving camera?

  • can we draw the character being affected by the wind?

And so on.

I don't think this is true. if it is, I'd love to see a source.

Most openings are made in the training and proof of concept stage according to this. It'd say it's common sense. Firstly, notice that openings are in fact a collage of assets that are mostly undirected, secondly, think financially, it would be a big waste of resources for the training/proof of concept to produce no assets.

There's also the project-agnostic assets liked a camera moving through trees or birds, these can be done before they even have a project or by an animator who doesn't have anything to work on.

There are exceptions of course, but the fad that made it a meme is probably due to the fact that it's a collage of assets.
