OP, do you happen to be Brazilian?? My grandparents' library at their old place looked just like that!
OP, do you happen to be Brazilian?? My grandparents' library at their old place looked just like that!
I am indeed!
Tá explicado o piso, as paredes, o lustre, tudinho bem familiar! Hahahaha Uma delícia esses lugares, dá pra sentir o cheiro de couro e livros antigos, da madeira da mobília também 💕💕
Simm
I came here to ask that! The bars in the window made me wonder. I am, in fact, traveling in Brasil….agora!
I was about to say this looks totally Brazil/Uruguay/Argentina, tons of places like that. Love em.
My former professor in Uruguay had a very similar office to this, it’s cool how recognizable the atmosphere is
Wow I need to book my next long vacation in south america then!
r/suddenlycaralho
Maybe you’re cousins
Daaang that’s an eye you’ve got!
I bet it smells so good in there!
It does! Its a mix of old varnish, leather and old book smell that takes me back to my childhood
Perfectly dreamy.

Makes me think of The Strand in NYC about thirty years back before it got organized and cleaned up. 😂 We would lose my mom for hours in there. Find her camped out with tomes of Egyptian history after a long search.
Your mum was living my dream!
[deleted]
OMG yes! We would joke about how you could easily die in an avalanche of books and they wouldn't know until they smelled you. Don't get me wrong, my mom and dad had essentially their own library at home thanks to the Strand. Some really beautiful books. But it was a real mess ages ago. My mom got mad when they "sorted things". 😂
I’m just imagining it smelling like my grandparents house. I can still smell it through their old books I have stored away. Enjoy this beautiful room. Are you keeping his house?
My grandmother is thankfully still alive and i have no doubt in my mind my mother and uncle have no intentions of selling it, so me and my cousins will thankfully be able to enjoy the literal shade of the trees my grandfather planted for us for years to come!
“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” -- Nelson Henderson
Indeed!
This is why I love working in forestry, helping create entire forests that won't mature until long after I am gone.
You are a hero we need and do not deserve thank you and thank you from my children and children’s children
One of my all-time favorites. When I had kids, I had this quotation made into a refrigerator magnet.
Sounds like your grandpa was quite the man and enjoyed the simple joys in life.
That’s wonderful. I’m so happy for you that you have that. :)
That’s wonderful! I can definitely see why it’s your favorite place. You must have the best memories there, and the memories you’ll continue to make there I imagine will be unforgettable
Happy 🍰 Day!
Oh wow! Thanks!! I didn’t even realize 😂
Damn I wish my childhood smelled like that. Mine is old motor oil and cigarettes
My father was am auto mechanic. I know that smell too. But we were also rural so it was mixed with farm smells, also sometimes unpleasant but also nostalgic at times.
I feel ya, I was at an estate sale the other day and got hit with the stale cigarette smoke smell and it was oddly nostalgic, I thought "dammit, Dad"
Your memories of your dad are a lot like mine of my dad :)
I feel like way more places smelled like motor oil and cigarette smoke before the year 2000 though, so it's still very nostalgic
My uncle was a huge pothead and I remember he always had a distinct ‘smell’ lol
I have become that uncle lmao
Looks like a French home. My wife is from France and so many of the houses have little nooks like this with amazing windows. Love this.
My childhood would have a little added pipe smoke.
That place looks incredible. I need to build one just like it
I can smell this through my phone😅😍
France?
No, brazil!
MANO EU SABIA KKKLKK
I was thinking "man those houses in countryside europe are so cozy", then I looked at the floor tiles and was like "no way", then I noticed the couch seat finish and was like "ok, this is almost definitely in brazil", then I looked through the window and had even more evidence haha
I'll save it to my inspo folder. Dream room for someone that likes to read
💯
Looks so comfy!
Literally my first thought lol. I thought I was weird for that but apparently not! I see OP said it smells like old varnish, leather, and old books but I also hope there's a beautiful flower garden outside and when the breeze is blowing on a warm summers day you can smell the flowers too...
Or the smell of a fresh summer rain and a thunderstorm off in the distance. I'm from the prairies. Nothing beats reading in a cozy room like this with the rain coming down.
I can smell this now from your description
You’re giving me anemoia.
Thanks for the word I’d not heard before. I had to click on it, and it’s perfect
There are! Part of the yard is lined with a hedge of hibiscus and my grandma has orchids growing in the shade of the porch
This makes me so happy! I hope you get to spend a lot of time in such a cozy space.
Thank you!
That was my first thought too, I could almost smell the place when I first saw the picture… very surreal
My first thought was about the smell as well. The fresh air through that window too… mmm.
The moment I saw this beautiful image I thought of how this room must smell. OP, your description is exactly how I had imagined. What a wonderful nook in this huge world.
You read my mind! Ohh it looks so nice.
Musty, leathery Balzac?
I love the smell but have learned to hate it because it usually means headaches and stuffiness from my allergies.
It has such a serene vibe.
When im there i feel like i could stay forever
It looks like the kind of place where you could go and learn in depth on any subject.
And be totally at peace
Hey do you wanna hang out sometime (in your grandpas corridor)?
Somehow it manages to successfully pull off both the popcorn ceiling AND popcorn wall!
Popcorn ceilings are great for sound dampening. People who remove the popcorn in a house have to deal with eco one way or another afterwards.
I had no idea of this. Thanks for mentioning it!
Popcornia
It reminds me SO much of the room in Three Colours: Red
There's a part of the movie where it's in this old judge's room, and it's all I can see. Except this is WAY nicer. I want to live there forever.
Your grandfather had impeccable taste!
Yes he did!
What country is that in?
Brazil!
Mind if I ask which state?
I was in Manaus for 2 weeks back in 2006, and it was a BEAUTIFUL country!!
Minas gerais!
Looks beautiful. I think it's time to revisit Brazil!
My condolences on your grandfather's passing.
Thank you
Was secretly hoping for a Tirith
Lol
eu não sei porque mas assim que eu vi a foto já sabia que era no Brasil kkkkkkkkk
meu avô também tinha uma biblioteca com a mesma vibe que essa
Did he happen to write a book about a group of dwarves traveling to their lost homeland with a wizard and a hobbit?
This place looks so peaceful, it looks like a perfect set for bag end
And smell!
Man caves and gaming rooms are cool and all. However, we need to bring back the study.
[deleted]
I agree. I prefer physical books, so the shelving it extremely appealing to me.
[deleted]
And customization options. Maybe the room will be a child’s bedroom and they’ll want a bed against the wall. Maybe it’ll be an office/study and in that case the buyer can add their own shelves as they see fit. Maybe it’ll be a guest bedroom and they’ll want some shelves and a Murphy bed. I’m personally a sucker for well-integrated built ins, but the blank canvas certainly has the appeal of flexibility. And yes doing good built ins is expensive.
Having book shelves on the wall doesn't stop you from using the room for whatever you want. I've been trying for 30 years to get my husband to agree to a bank of bookshelves in the dining room. You can still eat in a library.
It doesn’t necessarily, but for example in a rooms the size of the one in this post they’re a significant space commitment. I don’t think you could comfortably fit a bed or a medium sized family dining table in the room pictured without removing some of the shelving. In many situations it’s a worthwhile trade off for the space, but it is a trade off.
Sure. There are lots of situations, though, where I'd rather have the bookshelves than the bed or the table. Eating standing up is a fair price for having a gorgeous library in my opinion.
Yeah, I agree with the cost problem. It's easier and cheaper to put up cookie cutter houses than to give a house personal touches
I agree. A clean and well lighted place, with books, a desk, maybe a cushioned chair with a footstool. Nothing very big or very fancy. Just comfortable and peaceful.
Maps on the spare wall. A fireplace would be magnificent. Maybe one day
I just turn my TV to a fireplace channel, haha.
Modern solutions
Mancaves and game rooms could look like this (or at least this put together), but men don't typically care to make them look this nice. If I had a mancave, it would look like this and have that desk there open up to a gaming setup.

You might want to have a Google of what a study was used for vs what a parlor was used for. Did it for you though.
During the Victorian era, the parlor was the front room of every middle and high-class homes and for some, used exclusively to receive and entertain guest and for others, used as an environment for family intimacy.Dec 20, 2018
Historically, the study of a house was reserved for use as the private office and reading room of a parent/guardian as the formal head of a household, but today studies are generally either used to operate a home business or else open to the whole family.

Ok
[deleted]
A parlour (or parlor) is a reception room or public space. In medieval Christian Europe, the "outer parlour" was the room where the monks or nuns conducted business with those outside the monastery and the "inner parlour" was used for necessary conversation between resident members. In the English-speaking world of the 18th and 19th century, having a parlour room was evidence of social status.

Maybe people are different and sober people spend their time reading instead of drinking?
Way to make assumptions.
This is OC
You're really lucky to have a bunch of good memories bond to such a great place! :)
Thank you!
The yard looks awesome too based on that little glimpse
It is beautiful! When my grandpa built this house some 50 years ago he used most of the terrain to plant native plants of the region (southeastern brazil), now we regularly see toucans and small monkeys when the trees bear fruit
I was gonna say I just KNOW this is in South or Central America. Such a beautiful space, I bet rainy day naps are the best in here!
Yes they are!
That sounds incredible. I’m near Canada by comparison so our wildlife is pretty boring haha
Well, boring is relative. I live in NYC & enjoy birdwatching. One time in Central Park an English tourist saw a Northern Cardinal & got all excited about how beautiful it was. It was nice to be reminded that the things I find familiar are different & exciting to other people.
That’s so very right! Thanks for this reminder
small monkeys when the trees bear fruit
Is that why there are bars on the window?
Sadly bars are a common security feature in houses here in brazil. We never really needed them tho!
I saw the bars and immediately thought Caribbean, Central, or South America haha.
It’s sad but it’s necessary
Sabia que era no Brasil só de olhar tb. Tem cara de sitio na serra
That’s fabulous!
That's some of the most intense wall texturing (popcorn) I've ever seen. What part of the country are you located?
I’m OP’s sibling and I can attest that those walls were the cause of many of my bruises and scrapes growing up lol
Oops. Sorry!
Southeastern brazil!
Don't know how but I immediately knew it was Brazil
The furniture and metal bars.
Plus the flora and the railing visible through the window.
I'm brazilian and I've just noticed the metal bars lol
many years in south america and my brain just sees through that and aerial electric cabling lol
My grandmother lives in souther Spain, and her little upstairs study looks just like this.
(popcorn)
I look at homes for a living and the popcorn was the first thing that caught my eye.
It's bad enough sprayed on a ceiling. I had no idea there were places in the world where they routinely said "Fuck it, let's spray this shit on everything!"
The first thing I thought when I saw the photo was asbestos!
I was also gonna comment on the intensity of the spackle.
Heavily structured walls in cozy rooms are underrated.
Yeah I don't think I've seen popcorn wall texture before. A lot of it applied during a certain time has asbestos in it, so beware!
Is it actually stucco?
Hey /u/melkor237,
This is now the top post on reddit. It will be recorded at /r/topofreddit with all the other top posts.
I'm sorry for your loss. I can imagine you had the most amazing conversations with him over the years sitting on that couch while he sat at the desk
I did! Thank you for your condolences
I'd check every book to see if there's any interesting papers or artifacts hidden in the pages.
There are! My grandfather would use anything he got his hands on as a bookmark and also left notes on his favorite books! When i open a random book and there is a yellowed piece of an old receipt among the pages it feels like hes still there reading the book with me
That's awesome. Put a smile on my face, thanks!
That just warmed my heart!
This is the coziest, thanks for sharing.
What books did he collect?
A little bit of everything! There are old encyclopaedias, dictionaries, general literature, a LOT of language books (after he retired he became a latin teacher at the local seminar), science fiction (like early edition Asimov books), theology books, history books, even an old drugstore product tome that occupies half a whole shelf!
Cool. I work in a bookstore and a way that we commemorate owners of larger collections we buy for stock is to create a bookplate we would loosely insert into each volume. You may want to create a bookplate with your grandfather's name in inDesign or Photoshop and print them out, cut them up, and put them in each book. Just a thought...
Oh he was way ahead of that! Some decades ago he designed a seal for his collection and had a hand press made with it to mark the first pages of the books in his collection. It broken now but one day i want to have it fixed!
That is wonderful. I never thought to do that. When mine is much larger I will think of doing the same.
Tô fascinada pelo seu avô
So cool!
Your grandad live in Rivendell?
Looks more like a Hobbiton room
Came here for this, I was going to ask if their grandfather was Bilbo Baggins.
I came to tell OP that it's a bit late for trimming the verge.
I was about to say that OP must be from Hobbit stock. Tuckborough, maybe?
Literally looks like Bilbo’s study
OP is clearly trying to deceive the grandad and destroy it
[deleted]
Im sorry for your loss
normally not a fan of popcorn texturing but it actually kinda adds to the cozy vibe here
And if god forbid they ever decide to renovate, they may want to test it for asbestos.
Looks very similar to the office a professor of mine had. She had floor to ceiling bookshelves, a futon to the window, and a desk in the middle. Real cozy yet professional.
This is what I would love to have. Books are still in boxes though.
You need to play around with that lantern on the wall, 'cause there's like a 70% chance it's the trigger to open a secret compartment containing a set of clues to send you on a trip around the world searching for the second half of an amulet.
I'm not much of a reader, but this picture really makes me wanna read a book with a cup of coffee at my side.
The floor. The bricks. THE WINDOW. I’d never leave!
They say don't judge a book by its cover, but I like your grandfather already seeing his library.
You can feel the glow of the many flights of fancy he and I'm sure others found in the pages there. Simply magnificent.
I want to have a library like that some day.
Also, I see from your username that you are a Silmarillion fan. Clearly you have good taste.
Thank you!
Is there a magical wardrobe in there, by any chance?
Not that i have found yet! :P
You’ve heard of popcorn ceiling. Get ready for popcorn wall😭😭
I like that the sub's quality has gone up the last few weeks. This is great
This looks so beautiful and inviting!
Try to get some curtains on the window. Direct sunlight can damage books.
Oh my grandma is well aware, the shutters are always closed when the sunlight begins hitting the interior of the room.
However due to the trees it is a very short window of time when that happens!
Hehe 'window' of time
Heh
Popcorn ceilings.....no. popcorn walls. Popcorn floors
Do you know what that giant iron key goes to (upper left, if that even is a key)?
Oh thats just an antique key he got as a gift decades ago (my grandmas words) but there is a very old padlock and its key that are still functional in one of the shelves
Cool! Thx for sharing :)
Is that popcorn ceiling?
Yes but not the fluffy variety, its the bruise-your-clumsy-grandkids type!
But in all honesty it does make the house very quiet compared to the town around it
Sabia que era no Brasil!! Parece muito casa de vó 🥰
I'd like to book a stay there. A lazy warm spring sunday with a pot of coffee and a few chocolate chip cookies and a favorite book or two.
Gotta tell ya, I can feel the fresh warm spring breeze coming in the window in this photo.
I love the touch of blue from the window frame and shutters.
Just curious, is there another window that closes on the outside of those metal bars? It looks like it wouldn't be very weather proof without it.
Yes, you can kinda see the beginning of the blue wooden swinging shutters on the right side!
I don’t know if you ever read A Ring of Endless Light by Madeline L’Engle, OP, but this library reminds me of the grandpa’s library in that book. Many topics and many grandchildren benefitted. Thank you for sharing this gorgeous slice of cozy with us, and I’m sorry about your grandpa’s passing. May you and your family find comfort in his memory.
Looks amazing! But I’m surprised nobody has mentioned asbestos. That popcorn texture was commonly made with that carcinogenic substance.
They have, thankfully this is concrete popcorn texture!
What a cozy looking nook. Wonder if there's any cool hidden secrets around
Oh there are more than I’ll probably ever know!
Just today for example i opened the last book he ever read (don quixote) and found what might very well be his last improvised bookmark: a small cluster of leaves from a tree in the yard
But there are many more things hidden among the bookshelves!
Ahh that is really cool. Rest easy gramps.
I love the brick and wood shelving. Curious about the construction of it. So beautiful and structurally probably quite strong.
Love the older cottage like architecture! I'd love to live in a home like that- what area is this home in, if you're comfortable sharing? You picked perfect weather to photograph in, too. Looks so dreamy...
Southeastern brazil!
Ty! I'll stick SE Brazil on my travel list.
This is magical!
My grandmother just passed away and my dad says rhey are gonna sell the house
The house thats been in our family for 90 years
I am the first grandson and I dont have enough money to buy anyone out so yeah.
Books
Im so sorry for your loss
When I first looked at this photo, it felt so… familiar. So… home-like. The trees. The window. The wall texture. It gave me such a massive nostalgia punch that literally made a tear fall from my face.
Well. OP is from my home state. And I am too far away from home.
Da pra sentir o cheiro do café e ouvir os passarinhos lá fora. Obrigado.
Respect to your grandfather. Reading over a lifetime adds such value to yourself, and those pages pass along generations.
Please keep these books and if you don't consider donating them to a local library or collectors who preserve our literary history. I collect and save PNW Native American folklore and many lores to the NW books. They are some of my favorites.
My grandma is thankfully alive and both my mother and my uncle as well as most of my cousins really love the place, so i think its safe to say the books thankfully are not going anywhere anytime soon!
Amazing! Keep growing that library, then. Imagine what it could be in a few generations that also share the world of books grandpa started.
I am sorry for your loss. He left a major mark on this world in your Family it seems. That means he left one on his friends and aquanticence, too, something we should all shoot for in the end.
Oh it certainly is gonna expand, under that rug is not a bench but boxes of books and we have several more boxes and bookshelves in my house that will definitely one day add to the collection
This was a cool man.... I could listen to stories around this room for hours I bet... You ever need to unload some history, count me in.
Lay an extra flower at his grave for me one day.
I will once i visit him again, thank you for the kind words!
Thank you for sharing.
This is so aesthetically pleasing. If I could ever afford my own place I would love to have a study similar to this one.
Sorry for your loss. Amazing space!
Thank you!
It is cozy like a hobbit hole. I can smell the sweet pipe smoke.
I’ve never seen something I need more in my life than this right here.
I need a room like this 😩
Quite beautiful. I’m sure this evokes some great nostalgia for you.
It does!
I've been dreaming of having a little study for years, and my mental picture looks very much like this. My compliments to your grandfather on his taste, and my condolences to you on his passing.
Thank you!
Reminds me of a hobbit home :)
I have many leather bound books
Brazil?
Yes
Vellum has a very specific smell. I need a library in my home.
Looks like where the dude died in Knives Out
This screams like minas gerais/ são Paulo countryside to me lol
Edit: acabei de ver seu perfil e é no interior de MG mesmo! Hahahah
Minas Gerais is correct!
What country?
Brazil!
Is that a phone with a rotary dial !?
Yes! Should still work if we plug it back into the socket under the desk, tbh
OP name checks out - this person did some fine readin’ here.
Cantinho do paraíso, OP. Seu avô era incrível.
Boa leitura!
Obrigado!
In 50 years my grandchild gonna post something similar with my sick rig and RGB set up.
I like the saltillo tile!
Is that in Spain?
Brazil!
Cozy indeed! This makes me wish I was a reader haha, but nevermind that, it'd be my puzzle room! Lol
Brasil?
Edit: just saw your comment stating it was Brazil. I knew the second I saw that tile floor and then confirmed by the green outside.
Sim!
Looks like the most comfortable place ever
Getting Call Me By Your Name vibes from this space
Cozy, warm vibes.
I’d probably get smarter just sitting in that room.
I can literally see how quiet it is in there. I want one.
Was your grandfather Bilbo Baggins?
Man, what a spot to sit, have a glass of really good scotch/bourbon and contemplate life!
That is a super thick grout!
Lovely.
Love that big window. Looks so comfortable
I'm getting some serious Italian Poppi vibes from this, maybe I'm mistaken
I can certainly see why it's your favorite place. It would be mine, too, if I were in your shoes.
I could sit and read there for hours... 😍
class
Just lovely.
Usually I'm not a fan of textured ceilings/walls but this is nice
Im in love ♥️👀
Window is a vibe
totally get that.
Gorgeous! Is this in Southern Europe?
Southeastern brazil!
And now it’s my favorite place, too 😍
Man this looks so nice to sit and relax in i wish i still had something like this
Looks cozy. I keep having the thought of bumping my head on the bottom corner of the swinging window! A risk worth taking.
Oh dont get me started on that damn window lmao
Me and my cousins have bumped our heads a lot into it!
Someone made your hobbit library much too tall 🤔
It's too beautiful
Where is the world is this?
Minas gerais, brazil!
It looks so peaceful and comforting I can see why it would be a favorite place for you. I bet it feels like a warm hug as you settle down after a long day.
It does!
That is a perfect space. Thank you for sharing!
Nice ambiance. though im sure i would be sneezing from all them old books
I also do, but its worth every second!
Ugh I wish the chairs had more arm or back support. I would be so fussy
Looks absolutely magical
Really neat to think how many thoughts he had in there.
This seems very nostalgic to me, idk why
One thing I definitely want for myself.
I love books
I want to go and take a nap in there. Looks so peaceful
Beautiful, cozy book nook! I want one.
It's so gorgeous, I'm blown away
I bet it’s sooo cozy but can i take mine with out popcorn ceiling and … popcorn wall??
room is cool but the popcorn ceiling is giving me ptsd
Where?
Brazil!
Knives out
Cozy…
So, the Man cave before they were called Man Cave. Very nice. Peaceful.
I freaking love those floors
I feel so peaceful looking at this. I needed this thanks
ugh perfect!!
Now that is what I imagine when I think of ER Burroughs and others. Love all that wood. Like the trees live on in there. Thanks for sharing that slice of fried gold
That is just stunning!
I love it! Imagine all the stuff he's read in there.
Cozy
You can feel the Magic.
That's a beautiful room
Feels very Brazilian
Simply amazing!
i wanna live and die there.
what an absolutely marvelous space
Smells like le people
It's so cozy
Add smell of coffee in the mornings.
My dream should come true. I want that in my house. A library, gourmet coffee and comfy sofa. How neat.
Is your father the disruptor of songs
Looks very nice.
I want to be in here
Magical
What an absolutely beautiful room
It looks lovely and cozy.
Wow. Wonderous place
Beautiful, you can feel this place has a soul
Sorry for your loss, whenever that may have been.
I long to foster a love and respect of books in the young people in my life, as well as a physical space like the one your grandfather left for you. A haven of calm and peace that encourages critical thought, flights of imagination, and asking questions of the world around us.
Thank you for these words
One day, I’m going to have a place like this. My own little sanctuary. And an internal courtyard full of plants, with a cat door so my inside-only cats can enjoy the outdoors without any danger from predators, disease, cars, or people. Maybe a little pond with a tiny waterfall, and some happy little fish swimming around.
It’s good to have a goal, you know? So that you know what you’re working towards, so you have a why to your what.
One day.
I love it.
The Ninth Gate vibes
That looks great
Magical place indeed 🧙♂️🪄
I aspire to have such a place!
I feel like I’d get the urge to draft the constitution in this room
Would be mine, as well! Enjoy!
Yes.
Share some of the titles there
ThIs is super beautiful. I’m sorry for your loss. it seems you have a great memory.
This image really resonates with me. I am currently going through my grandparents estate while renovating an old home, to include a library for my wife’s books.
Im sorry for your loss. Thank you
Beautiful! Looks like it could be a set from Call Me By Your Name
That looks SO cozy!
Wow, that window/exterior is just extraordinary, gives off The Secret Garden vibes.
I too choose this person’s late grandmother’s library.
My vision of heaven❤️❤️
Oh my god the little ladder. However I end in life it needs to be in a room like this.
Nice
I bet he has a wardrobe that is a portal into narnia. OP update us please if you find the portal.
Damn it’s even got a big ass pirate key on the wall🔥
Love, love, love this.
i would never leave this room tbh
looks cozy and full of memories. what’s with the bars? where is this?
Its in brazil! Window bars are a very common feature on houses that are not in gated communities. Thankfully we never really needed them!
That looks amazing! Why is he late?
He sadly passed away last year
Omg I am so sorry I did not know what that meant!!! My condolences
No problem, thank you!
Big Hobbiton energy.
Looks like that one mission in the wine vineyard on Hitman Blood Money.
Oh, this room is perfection! I can smell the old books. The spring rains. There’s a couch for napping and daydreaming. I love it all.
This is my dream room. So freaking cozy.
Just needs a cat curled up in there somewhere and it’s perfect!
RIP
Makes me miss my own uncles 😢
Wow. So beautiful
Makes you want to take a drawer out and look behind it for a hidden key great looking place your grandfather did a magnificent job
i'm in love
And now it's My favourite place
Mexico? Asking because that wall treatment is common thrrr
Brasil!
I can see why
That's beautiful. You can really feel his character in the style of that room. What a wonderful place to engage in your thoughts.
Let’s get some arms on that couch.
This couch originally had arms, its just that the interior pillows of the arms were removed and the bags tucked in because they were getting snagged a lot by the ladder and the pull-out part of the couch and we were afraid it would tear
Interesting. I just know I would need a place to lean on my elbow to read all those books.
Theres a leather armchair barely in the picture to the lower left corner that i couldn’t get in frame, it even has a lamp for night reading!
Nice, problem solved!
FRODO! Get the door!
That looks like Heaven 🥰😍
Does he spend hours pouring over old maps when he thinks you are not looking?
/r/battlestations of another era
Imagine all the thoughts that have been had here. Very nice space!
This gives Resident Evil save room vibes
You are so lucky! Enjoy!
What a dream library room. The floor to ceiling bookcases, comfy seating and a great view!
Is this in the US? I feel like this is in Italy or Greece or something.....
Brazil!
I would spend more time sleeping here than reading.
I thought they popcorned the walls for a moment
What a great treasure to have!
Looks so cozy 🤤
this is a dream for me
It’s our favorite place now. Thanks for sharing.
when i move out of my parents house (in like, 5 years or something, im bad at math), i am going to make sure to buy a house with an extra small room, and make it into this.
Dude, what now!? This place is epic
Would be a good movie scene, but I also love the design of the library
I wish I could have tall bookshelves like that, but I live in an earthquake prone area. So nice to see this though.
A bookworm can only dreammmm
It’s Bag End!
Obviously didn’t know him, but I’m certain that I would’ve liked him.
was ur grandfather a wizard by chance?
It’s amazing the impact your grandparents had in your life
how could this possibly not be your favorite place in the world
Looks like something out of Harry Potter.
This is all I’ve ever wanted
The word "perfect" applies here.
My grandfather had a huge hacienda style home. One wing was his record collection, library and his aged bourbon bar.
I loved the smells of the old leather, listening to tunes of yore. Lots of blues and jazz. He would drink his decanted dark booze.
Looks so peaceful and serene!
Your grandfather may have been a hobbit.
This place is mystical
I totally could see why.
I love this 🥹
This one is my favorite so far on this subreddit r/CozyPlaces
May I ask why the bars on windows?
They are a common sight here in brazil, thankfully we never really needed them!
Oh beautiful! I thought bc of bears, perhaps!
Man thats cozy
Lovely.
I can see why! That is my dream library! It’s so beautiful!
Very nice
Gorgeous. I could spend an eternity in there ❤️
I can only imagine the treasures and gold in that room. Total sanctuary!!
Gives me such a serene and peaceful, warm feeling.
I feel like I'm in Bilbo baggins' hobbit hole. It's fantastic
I can see why
How beautiful 😍 reminded me of my gdad. He loved books too
It's beautiful!
I would love this!
I love this!!!
Santa Barbara?
That’s an awesome space
Beautiful!!
Stunning! I want to sit there and read a book 📕
So, are you a Jose, an Aureliano, or an Arcadio?
Beautiful. Is he still in there? Under the couch maybe? Looks haunted.
I’d say he is in the books, feels like he is there with me whenever i open a book and theres a note scribbled on the bottom or a hastily placed bookmark in a particular part he liked
It would be my favourite too! It’s absolutely beautiful!
Proof a library/study doesn't need to be large and grand to be cozy ❤️
uuuugh my dream!
This floor! Omg! Just like my grandma’s house!
My grandfather had a study. His memory in my head is 50% that room and him letting me enjoy being in it.
My grandfather passed in 1980 so its a wonderful thing to awaken those memories.
Thank you
Granddads a legend.
Awesome!
10/10 would get cozy and read there
I could live in that room for the rest of my life! It looks so comfy!
I would never leave this room 😩
So sorry for your loss
Thank you
I remember when I walked in my grandfather’s office/study. He punched me in the chest and told me never to go in that room again.
I miss that man every day.
Yeah that would be my happy place.
Add a nice rug and a lap blanket and it's heaven.
this awesome, Gryffindor common room kind of way.
Did an old man in long robes and about a dozen dwarves ever visit him asking to go on a quest?
I'm so jealous rn❣️💯
Love the Saltillo floor tiles also the brick and wooden shelves and desk.
Reminds me of a Mexican hacienda with those wooden windows and outside cement patio guardrails. And the reflection from window it looks like the outside is painted a blue and yellow. Reminds me of old mexico.
I'm not stalking your picture just that in my past life I was detective.
I miss México
This is why the days before the internet were so much more calm and peaceful. I long for those days. Social media has ruined society.
Now this is a picture that actually belongs here! Looks like something out of a fairytale, definitely cozy
truly cozy. like you could crawl in and just be
Reminds me of a place we stayed in San Miguel. The Saltillo tile, the brick, the wood window frames. I just love the materials.
I feel calm just looking at this 🥰
This looks like an absolute dream!
That chair is baller, the entire room has that “good feel”
Holy crap that's gorgeous
Damn that is nice
He has a good taste, a very warm place
I could see your late grandfather lounging in the sofa next to the window with a book in his hand enjoying the book and the breeze and singing birds from trees outside the window. May I ask what country you’re in? This is beautiful scenery
😳🫡
Looks like the inside of a castle 😍
Omg this reminds me of the bookshop from beauty and the beast!
[deleted]
Its Brazil in Minas Gerais state!
Since its my grandma’s house i prefer not to say the city itself tho
Majestic! Splendid! Capital!
I need u to go outside that view looks mesmerizing 🥺
Nothing like a good book.
Also I’m really weird, sometimes loved the way a book smelled. 🤫
I'm sorry for your loss. You're grandfather's built a very nice library.
Thank you!
That is just amazing.
I think you're a good person. Stay cozy, pal.
Thanks!
Imagine the books there agh love it
Lovely. Good men never really die. Always leave some crumbs in their wake, I'd like to think.
This is wonderful!
I didn't know a personal library was something I will now have to have one day.
Hope you guys retain this.
Great spot to get lost in a good book with a cup of tea and listen to the rain.
That's so cozy it borders on supernatural!
That looks like the perfect hideaway!
I love the saltillo tile so much. My grandparents home had it so it became very nostalgic for me, and I ended up buying a home that has it as well. It's beyond comforting.
I want to read the Lord of the Rings trilogy here so bad
Currently reading the Silmarillion here!
Now THIS is a cozy place! May your memories keep him alive in your heart
Thank you for your kind words!
I like how this feels naturally cozy.
Most posts in this subs are rooms and places designed to be cozy.
This one, however, feels like it got its coziness naturally or even unintended. Nice one.
A study fit for a wizard
What a wonderful space!
Gorgeous room.
Like a crime movie set!
Awesome!
The world needs more places like this. Just beautiful. 🤌✨
Very warm and inviting!
I waaaaaant
i just know that floor is freezing
If it's in a hot climate, a cool floor would be a plus
I’m OP’s sibling and I can attest that the floor is really cold and that that is a bonus, we have very few truly cold days here and building houses to hold in heat is really not ideal in tropical countries.
Hello there sis!
We have this same saltillo tile in my home and we're heated with radiant in-floor. It's pretty great on the toes, and indeed, stays nice and cool during the summer.
Yeah it’s so funny how different we all are. I don’t find leather couches particularly comfortable but I know many do. I also would be cold with that flooring and would prefer thick carpet, but so many here find this cozy.
I do love the books along the wall, the small space, and the window however.
Super cozy - and I love that window!
I know it's warm and comforting to just sit and fall asleep there. Beautiful library.
little slice of heaven :)
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen!
Beautiful. This is my dream office/library.
For a moment I thought this was Hobbiton and Frodo or Bilbo were somewhere around!
Jealous! I want to go to there!
Now it's my favorite too ❤️
Beautiful.
OP's grandfather was a hobbit
Very Bag End. I love it.
It’s magical. It looks like it would be the opening setting of a happy movie. And what a comforting and relaxing place to read!
This is everything
This is such a thought filled layout.
It is also my favorite place too
A perfect room.
Lucky you I'm jealous.
This gives me hobbit hole vibes... in a good way
I love this! I hope you don't mind if I use it as inspiration for my own personal study.
What a wonderful room. It’s bringing back memories from Spain.
Wow. It’s beautiful. I hope it stays that way and provides you with inspiration, imagination and motivation
Getting Uncharted vibes here.
.... I'm honestly in shock on how cozily perfect it is.
Cozy, relaxing & quiet. Good space for creativity to breathe! Good call.
So sweet. Live the light and windows. What genre of books did he read
His all time favorite was the 3 musketeers, so far ive found 2 copies and one of them was very worn. The last book he ever read was don quixote.
But the books on the shelf above his desk were his latin books and dictionaries he used for his lectures!
He also enjoyed encyclopaedias and history books as well as some sci-fi and general literature, but hands down his favorite genre was language studies!
He sounds like a quintessential college professor.
Oh he was a latin professor for the local seminary!
Kinda wanna read till I doze off on that couch.
Beautiful! What does it smell like? Seems like it would be a wonderful mix of fresh air and well-loved books
Fresh air mixed with old varnish, leather and old book smell!
Id love to curl up with a book here! It looks so serene
I hope that your family is able to keep this lovely place in the family.
Such a great spot.
I see he went crazy with the 80’s cottage cheese ceilings…
Oh, this is just lovely. Big thumbs up.
Wow. This place looks absolutely magical!
This looks like a place Tolkien could've worked at.
Wow... I love everything about this place.
This looks like it’s straight out of a dream! Such a wonderful study.
This is beautiful
This is the definition of cozy.
Also, getting some serious Beauty and the Beast vibes from this room (and I mean that in the best way possible). https://i.imgur.com/AGiNgRP.jpg
Mm classy as fuck I wanna sit in there and smoke a cigar and drink some scotch
I love a good study or library. Even if I wasn't reading, the atmosphere in there would be awesome.
This is my dream
Lovely!
Bag End vibes
I need a place like that when I will have a house... if I have one someday
*in between tears* It's so beautiful
I can see why
Love this so much 😍😍
Cozy
This does look amazing
Beautiful space!
Is it weird that it is now my favorite place?
I could get lost in here forever :)
Is that asbestos wall and ceiling I see?
Nah, its concrete popcorn ceiling/walls!
The Holy Bible is a Journal. On the desk, and it's definitely not made of Mahogany, it's lightly-stained Oak.
The blanket is Navaho. It's All Sacred. Those Impeccable Tribes of the Desert -via the Fountaini - will make more, but the Object can't be Programmed.
It's one of the gadflies or juggernauts , some say Gordian Knots, of Simulation "Theory."
It's REALLY HARD (some say - ahem - difficult) to simulate a Grandpa.
No arm rest on couch. Last 20 minutes, tops.
Mmm asbestos
Incredibly that is not asbestos popcorn ceiling! Its some harder kind of material that is thankfully non toxic!
Looks like stucco which can have asbestos in it depending on the year.
Do you like it better than Hanalei, Kauai?
Looks like a render that was stopped early.
Came here to see if anyone said this.
IT NEEDS PLANTS!!
That’s some old money shit right there.
Bars on the windows make it really comforting.
