Its use of cutaway gags made the show perfect to upload on YouTube during the early days of the platform. You didn't need to see the entire context of a scene, such as the immaculately choreographed Giant Chicken fights, or the legendary comedy corner stone the Epicac scene, in order to laugh and have a good time with the Griffins.

Seasons 4-9 are the show in top condition. Favoring a style of comedy akin to a machine gun, rapid fire jokes and gags occur so quickly that if you don't care for one, another is on the way in no time. This creates a sense of pacing Unrivaled by its contemporaries. Through a sort of osmosis the only jokes that remain are the highly memorable ones, resulting in the viewer leaving with a higher-than-average ratio of laughs to jeers.

To be fair, the artstyle is intentionally really ugly so they can tackle puberty issues without it being sexualized. If they made the artstyle good, it would quite literally child porn.

I don't think the issue is sexualizing teens. How many teen dramas do you see where sex/sexualization is involved? The story is about awkward teen years. To do that legitimately without any sexuality involved would be super difficult I imagine. I think it's more to do with the fact that they intentionally avoided censoring and went out of their way to make sure they got to draw teenage genitals and such. Like, gratuitously. The "artistic intention" (and I use that phrase so lightly that it's almost sarcastic) of the show could have been delivered in a much better way than things like having a drawn out animation of one teenager's vagina singing a song to her about how it likes to be touched for masturbation.... If you're only anti-sexualizing the child characters you're making because that's not what the show is about, there's some re-evaluation that needs to be done there, too. If you completely ignore both of those things anyways, and then after the show you've made is released it becomes clear that it appeals to large numbers of pedophiles, so you decide for the next season you're going to make it significantly worse, that's just fucked.

As others have said, we shouldn't not make something because someone might be attracted to it in an unsavory way. Pedophiles are a super easy demographic to vilify, for obvious reasons, but the show isn't being produced for pedophiles. There's still value in the content for opening dialogue about taboo issues we've all had to deal with when growing up. Your same logic can be applied to all kinds of content, depending on what you think is deplorable.

The truth is that it's not really possible to make a show about puberty that doesn't feature child characters. So, you have to decide: is it better to not have those discussions at all, or is some level of discomfort acceptable in order to break the shell society has unfairly put around natural human processes, often disproportionately weighed against women? I'll admit, I was definitely off put the first time the vagina started talking (r/brandnewsentence), but after I reconsiderd it, I didn't think it was that big of a deal. The overall message was positive and pretty educational regarding subjects that are not really discussed in our culture.

The reason the show works is because it does everything in such an outlandish way. The comedy aspect is needed to counter the serious and uncomfortable subject matter, or otherwise people would tune out. Some shows have dipped their toes in addressing these taboo issues, like Connie getting her period in King of the Hill, but it's really only been an episode here or there. I asked because I probably wouldn't have been as offput by a talking dick. As a society, we're conditioned to see penises as funny. It certainly takes some getting used to, but once you’re familiar with the characters, the art style sort of becomes endearing. Yes it’s uncomfortable, but at that age you kind of feel like everything’s uncomfortable, so it sort of fits.

I can understand why people are uncomfortable with the content, but I legitimately don't get how people think the style is somehow gross or off-putting. Sure, it depicts some raunchy, often unsettling stuff, but overall it's a pretty modern, clean/smooth animation. Lots of curved lines, color, and decent detail.

Compared to shows like Ren & Stimpy, Bevis and Butt-head, and even Rugrats, which have intentionally rough/ugly animation styles, Big Mouth is crystal clear by comparison. Yeah, the characters have big heads? What's strange about that? Essentially every animated show has some way of depicting the world that sets it apart from other shows. Very few go for straight realism. The only one I can think of is King of the Hill (and yes, I understand that the style in Beavis and Butt-head is similar, but the way that the main characters are drawn in that show is so intentionally offputting that I think it negates the realism of the rest of the animation). Personally, I don't understand why people are so apparently weirded out by the characters in Big Mouth, but I never see anyone complain about the chinless overbite freaks in Bob's Burgers. Great show, but boy do people in that style look weird af.

Couldn’t think of any kind of person who actually would want to watch this, then I realized that its aimed at 14 year olds who might have representation issues when it comes to sexuality. Which explains a lot.

The first thing that came to mind when I watched it was. "I wish I had this show when I was in middle school." My parents were super religious and explained nothing to us about puberty, sex, etc...other than "Don't have sex until married." I would have killed to know that other people were going through the same thing as me when I had an errection on the bus, and was super ashamed because I had to get off, but I had gym shorts on. So its just anxiety. Big mouth does an amazing job at explaining some difficulties that kids go through. The show isn't supposed to be sexualing kids for adults. It's supposed to be showing kids that every single on of their peers is going through it as well. It's a great show.

The first season or two actually has a lot of stuff that I wish I had known as a kid, and it's presented in a humorous way. I got invested and saw the rest, which is basically "kids want sex" and contains very little of the original material.

My wife and I (in our 30's) watched and thought it was funny and related to a lot of the topics from the perspective of our younger selves.

Maybe the problem is that the show is written by 40 year Olds with an 80's childhood and some of it doesn't resonate with a younger crowd.

I think you’re spot on. That’s a good point about the 40 year olds too. I’m in that exact demo and most of the things in there hit home but I didn’t think of how that perspective (my perspective) could be skewed by my outdated take on things.

To be fair though there’s a lot of new topics they focus hard on (omg, no pun intended, that was just terrible, sorry) that the target generation are dealing with. I think most of the problem is nobody has seen the show (because of the comments they see say it’s child porn) so they have no idea it’s not that but they’re too afraid to watch it (because apparently it’s child porn) so it’s a vicious cycle of upvotes for any negative comments regarding the show.

Also people want to belong with the biggest group so they instinctively click upvote on upvoted comments and down on downvoted. It’s built into our brains and difficult to go against.

I’m engaging a lot in this post because of not only the misinformation but I really think the show is a great tool for sex education in a world where kids are woefully under educated and expected to navigate the world of puberty and raging hormones.

I have a similar view that you and your wife did. I don't think the show is bad (I even enjoyed the first two seasons) but I wish I was younger when it came out. I genuinely think the show explains puberty (and just being a teenager) very well and could see it actually easing some of the frustration for current teens.

I would have encouraged my two daughters to watch it in middle school on their own if I could do things over again. It’s a great tool that covered soooo many of the things they faced with no support from the schools. Very true! I think it's a general lack of accessible CORRECT information for kids/teens/adults so even just to have one show that reps a little positivity surrounding body knowledge is good. I'm sure there are others and probably even ones that tackle it better, but this one is the only one I know of that's so to-the-point.

Other shows like Steven Universe address a lot of similar issues but it's more nuanced and not the focus of the show. But I know someone who has watched that show and only saw surface-level. The goal was to give a funny, painfully accurate representation of kids going through middle school, and I think they succeeded in that. It's a decent show for what it is.
